Looks like someone (my brother-in-law) is trying to help poor ol' Cole Hamels get to a playoff game for a non-rival. Spoiler alert: the money raised actually goes to the Brewers Community Foundation, not Hamels.
Per Fangraphs' advance fielding stats, the Crew has the 3rd best defense in the majors this year. That suffers a bit without Cain, but for the most part it passes the eye test I'd say.
Suter is gonna need every little advantage he can get given that he's not gonna miss bats. Improved defense and a good pickoff move will help. I am becoming resigned to the likely situation that the crew is not gonna add another SP. At least Suter games should be lively.
Lynn hasn't pitched 200 innings since 2014. He's only done it twice in his career. Declining K rate, wrong side of 30, and with he declined the QO so we'd lose a pick. Pass.
Betances is said to be on the outs in New York. He lost control and fizzled down the stretch, but it might be worthwhile to try to buy low on him. The Yankees are building for the present, so they wouldn't want a guy from the minors. I'm thinking maybe a swap involving Villar would be good - both players could use a change of scenery and both teams can buy low.
Couldn't find any thread dedicated to Hader to put this in, so I thought I'd throw it in here since his performance has been a great source of optimism in 2017. Here is a good read with Hader getting some national baseball nerd love for his ability to generate swings and misses. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/batting-against-josh-hader-seems-terrible/
He hit a little squibber out in front of home plate. He thought it was foul and didn't take off for first. Reds turned a 2-6-3 double play, whereas he would have made it to first safely had he run.
Baseball America put out a podcast today about the Brewers org. It's a great listen, except for the part in the intro where they literally referred to Haudricourt as "Mr. Baseball" in Milwaukee.
FWIW,Baseball America had a projected 2020 Brewer Roster that went along with their top 10 list. They don't speculate as to trades and FA signings but here is what they came up with: PROJECTED 2020 LINEUP Catcher Jacob Nottingham First Base Ryan Cordell Second Base Isan Diaz Third Base Lucas Erceg Shortstop Orlando Arcia Left Field Corey Ray Center Field Lewis Brinson Right Field Trent Clark No. 1 Starter Josh Hader No. 2 Starter Luis Ortiz No. 3 Starter Brandon Woodruff No. 4 Starter Marcos Diplan No. 5 Starter Zach Davies Closer Phil Bickford
This is very exciting for us fans of the Effectively Wild podcast, for whom Ryan Webb is a minor celebrity for holding the lifetime record for most games finished without recording a save.
He's not predicting a 60+ outcome for Reed. If you read the introduction, he states that the third number listed is a 90% outcome, not something he's predicting. The middle number, 55, is where he thinks Reed will be.
Anderson and Hill are pretty much known for what they are at this point. Diaz is very interesting. From Prospect361.com: "2016 Emerging Prospect: Isan Diaz (SS) One of the breakouts in the Diamondbacks organization was Isan Diaz. The 2014 Supplemental second round pick was overwhelmed last year but tore it up in the Pioneer League in 2015. In 68 games, he batted .360 with 13 home runs and 12 stolen bases and an 1.076 OPS. He has a nice approach at the plate but can get pull-happy as he tries to muscle up on the ball. If he can stay within himself at the plate and stay short-to-the-ball, the Diamondbacks might have something."
It's really as simple as this: Straight players can casually speak about having a girlfriend/wife/etc. In that sense, they are outing themselves as straight all the time. If a gay player were to casually a boyfriend/husband/partner, the media would freak out. Denson is getting out in front of the story, and we hope he can devote energy and focus to playing.
