  1. Is Schilling a HOF pitcher, though? He has 216 wins all time, which ranks 86th, tied with luminaries such as Charlie Hough and Wilber Cooper, who are not in the Hall of Fame. His career ERA of 3.46, while good, is not elite considering the era he played in. Yes, he had some clutch moments in his career ... some transcendent ones even. But is that enough to overcome career numbers that are good, but arguably not great? That is fine if that is the argument. But is it the actual argument? Schilling is trying very hard to make sure it isn't.
  2. I've always thought the Favre's supporting talent argument was kind of weak. The guy had Ahman Green flirting with 2,000 yards and the Packers were 10-6 because of Favre when they should have been 13-3. He kept them from advancing in the playoffs as well. The coaching staff is more relevant to me as he played under four coaches in Green Bay alone during his career and seven throughout his career by my count. That would be disruptive to anybody.
  3. I'm not sure Schilling is the automatic in he seems to think he is. He's not Pedro Martinez. He's not someone I would say "He's in the HOF? No way!" But he's not Clemens to me. The little campaign he has going seems like an attempt to divert attention away from his possibly borderline career and make it seem like that's the ONLY reason he wouldn't get voted in. In addition to that, the HOF does have a character clause, and it's not anything new. We can argue the merits of that (Ty Cobb is in after all) but there is a precedent for this. I'd also add that this is beyond political views and I don't want to go too far down that rabbit hole, but some of things Curt has said steer quite a ways away from politics and into an uglier realm. Bonds and Clemens should be there to me, because Bonds can make a case for being the greatest player ever pre-doping. I am OK if the voters disagree, I don't lose sleep over it. Rose, I am completely indifferent. He has a worse argument than anybody. I am admittedly more receptive to doping than most, but Rose is scum and I don't really care if he's there or not.
  4. Agree that thin crust is usually best and my preferred pie. I do like deep dish though and it goes further if sharing with a large group.
  5. I actually agree with this. He was more flash than substance and was enormously popular and relatable and it led to an exaggeration of the player he actually was. His longevity/streak was his calling card but there is a lot of mediocre play between those lines. You can basically draw a line where Holmgren leaves GB and his play falls off a cliff. His season in Minnesota was the only one resembling his MVP years. "Wasn't that special" is probably a bit of hyperbole, but I've never thought he's in the same strata as Rodgers and it goes beyond just the admittedly inflated stats of Rodgers's era. I do wonder how Favre's career would have gone if somehow Holmgren had stayed in GB for 15 years. But during the middle and end of his career, I thought I was going mad. I felt like the only fan within a 100 mile radius saying "They cannot win with this guy, he loses the ball way too often, and him throwing a dumb pick to end the season has become a tradition." It just felt like nobody could say it at the time.
  6. That's not too far from what it is. It's basically a ciabatta as a crust. I'm not sure why that would make it bad though. I like all forms of pizza. Some more than others.
  7. Murphy's statement came on a radio show yesterday (before the story posted in this thread was published) and Rodgers clarifying his Sunday comments do not exclude the possibility that he wants a contract extension. From article: "Former Packers teammate A.J. Hawk asked him a question about revisiting his contract and Rodgers said he expects to have conversations with General Manager Brian Gutekunst, team president Mark Murphy and others now that the season is over." That's not a denial. I think TPlush was referring to putting to bed the "uncertain future" meaning he could be elsewhere in 2021. That was always a bit of a stretch. Beyond next season I think most bets are off.
  8. I think he's like 75. He's a good coach but that's getting up there. I believe Pete Carroll is currently the oldest coach. Not that it couldn't work at all, but I would be surprised if MLF gets to call his shot now and goes with somebody that old and recycled.
  9. Haven't seen the video, but I'm pretty sure Rodgers visited Favre in Mississippi one of the last few years. I don't know if they're BFF or anything but they seem to be friends.
  10. I agree and would have the same reservations, but that's what makes it more likely I think. Someone like Khalil Mack from a few years ago probably isn't attainable. If it's someone with some question marks, but with a chance to still play very good football, and on an expiring or soon to expire deal, it's less difficult to acquire them. It's basically known at this point he doesn't want to be in Houston. I doubt it even takes a first to get him, whoever does it.
  11. He'd have to talk to the media first, and likely just got out of dodge ASAP. I don't believe coordinators are required to visit the podium. I think the call came down to Pettine trying to keep the Bucs out of FG range. Inexcusably it did not occur to him that they would risk coming away with 0 points by going deep, which is probably what would have happened had that pass not been caught. As a fan, when that ball was snapped, the only thing I was thinking was "please just go underneath and settle for 3." I was terrified of exactly what they did.
  12. I thought that was a very bad take as well for all the reasons stated. There are areas in which the Packers could have done better by Rodgers, but for all intents and purposes, both the 2014 and 2020 teams were constructed well enough to win championships. No draft pick, no signee, no scheme guarantees that. The players have to do it on the field and in both cases, they could have, should have, but did not. That's not the FO.
  13. I believe Craig Nall was Favre's initial backup as well. I don't think that's really anything besides a Rite of Passage. Given that there basically was not a camp/preseason, I don't think Boyle's spot on the depth chart is telling of very much. If something were to happen to Rodgers, I'd guess that Boyle would maybe get a start or two and have to be really good to stick. If Rodgers got hurt this year, Love was starting the next game, not Boyle. I agree with the larger point, but not sure this is true. I think they would have gone with Boyle, the guy who's been around a bit, over tossing Love to the wolves without even a preseason.
  14. I'd rather do it this way. I also haven't gotten this letter. Was it mailed or emailed? There is also a refund option mentioned within this letter. The team processed refunds for last year. You got options. The anger over this has been odd to me from day one.
  15. No, but the NFL is about picking your spots. Everybody has holes, it's just which ones can you get away with half-filling. IMO, CB is the biggest need that can most realistically be filled as it doesn't really have to be a star, they already have one. I expect they draft a WR or RB or both somewhere, but there is enough there to win now. A "go for it" type move would be a splash player in the front 7, either via trade or FA.
  16. Correct, I meant that Love actually gets to play, which he has not at this point, even in preseason, and looks good enough that someone is interested beyond next season.
  17. PFT basically throws everything at the wall. This being true is not a big shock to me, I just would like some verification rather than ominous "report" 24 hours after the NFCCG. I'm with TPlush. In my ideal world, Love looks OK in preseason and can be traded, and they address 'moving on' in 4 years. They can suck at that point, that's fine. Why moving on is even on their radar with someone playing as well as Rodgers, and not really being THAT old by current QB standards, I don't know. But trading up just to trade a guy later would be an odd move. The other wild card, is, of course, Rodgers gets hurt next year and Love gets to play. That could change the whole conversation.
  18. Preston Smith lining up as a CB more than once tells me about everything I need to know about his regression. I've seen the same thing said about Z multiple places and I feel like it was more of a mantra that caught on than reality. He was second team all-pro, finished the year with a 77 on PFF, 13 sacks (admittedly not a great metric), 23 hits, 12 TFL...He was the only 10/20/4TO player in the league besides Aaron Donald. SOME regression from last year was almost a guarantee based on how good he was in '19. Preston is all but gone, but Pettine better be. As a side note, Blake Martinez did have a nice season in New York. Maybe the player wasn't the problem.
  19. I think the leakage by national media makes it slightly more likely it came from the Rodgers camp. The timing of it is what makes me skeptical. It has literally been one day.
  20. Here's the rub for me. What exactly can the Packers do next year to get a lot better? Forget about the offense, as I think it's mostly negligible. They bring back Adams, MVS and Lazard probably at least stay as good, but one likely gets better. Tonyan is there. Dillon is there. The O-line will be fine. They need a defensive star in that lineup. Someone that changes the game often, they just don't have that guy. Jaire is great, a star CB even, but he really isn't that type of guy. They can't go back and redo draft picks they've used or traded away. And the issue is they just don't appear to have the capital to make that sort of move. They are missing a JJ Watt, a Reggie White, even a Peppers, a young Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson. Smith has been good, but not that guy. If all they do is run it back with no value added defensively, I just don't see them getting past Tampa and whatever monster defenses show up next year.
  21. I'd like to see it verified a little. But I have no issue with it. If this is true, I think he probably knows this is not going to happen. It just gives him an answer sooner than later.
  22. I'd absolutely hop on whatever team took Rodgers. I'd still want to see the Packers move forward positively, but I'd love cheering for Rodgers. I never felt that way about #4.
  23. I really don't think we would have. Or at least I think we'd have lit up that defense and it would have been one helluva game. Tampa was the only team that I was scared of because they had two edge rushes who can beat you a number of different ways. I'd say if we had a healthy Bahk...things would have been different, but, they probably wouldn't have. Yeah, I don't think so either. The Packers were capable of beating any of the remaining teams.
  24. Can't see him retiring next year if still playing well. I think he's on the Brady plan and wants to play to 43, 44. Years ago I believe he said he wanted to stop at 35.
  25. I think this is probably correct. But Gute wanting to move on after 2022 would not surprise me. From his perspective, he obviously thinks very highly of his own skills and if you're a guy like that, the prospect of a QB on a rookie deal and space to pursue players the way you want to, not the way you inherited the roster, has got to be tempting. I think the separation would be much more amicable this time. Rodgers would embrace leaving GB, I think.
