  1. Keeping in mind we don't know the circumstances yet (it could be a salad tong incident, for all we know), but would you have felt the same way if the Brewers were contending right now and we do learn it was self-inflicted in anger? Ha! I was just about to say something witty about salad tongs
  2. Well that's something... Tucker is on my disappointment list this year...
  3. Its a terrible idea to use talent to trade away undesired contracts. I'd rather eat the contract (figuratively or literally). I'm not opposed to trading him at all, if you can trade Garza and Taylor for a future 3b, go for it. Phillips is same age as Taylor and far more advanced as of right now. Reed & Santana are only a year older than him. Then add Roache & Coulter to mix....he is expendable Fair enough. I read your post add a way to dump Garcia rather than a way to obtain something of value in return.

  5. The hint didn't help... I wasn't even close. 5 guesses wouldn't have helped...
  6. Fielder OPS from 2011 to 2015: 981, 940, 819, 720, 894 - Add in the neck injury (Fused discs?) and most people thought this contract was going to be a major boat anchor prior to this year (might still be). Braun's OPS in the same years: 994, 987, 869, 777, 821 - Last year was when his thumb injury cropped up. Braun is about 6 months older than Fielder. My only point was that both players trended down for those 4 years in a similar fashion (including an injury last year) and similar level of play and bounced back some this year.
  7. Sorry the lack of a link, but I was reading a bit about this yesterday and it talked about how these past trades were done with a mix of the "traditional scouting" and the analytics. And I think most people are pretty universally liking the people we got back. Compared to the normal mixed reaction in the past. Proof will be in the impact of those people at the MLB level, but its nice to see that they are trying to modernize.
  8. I guess we just disagree then. I thought reillymcshane's example was really good. We are going to DFA you, but here is an option if you can't find anything else. I don't think its insulting to give someone options. It lets them know that you still have respect/regard for him, even though his physical skills are fading.
  9. Seems like the clearing waivers part is pretty quiet. Sometimes we hear about someone or another, but its not a normally reported piece of information.
  10. I'm not sure why that would be insulting... If anything, its an insult to tell someone that they can't pitch for one of the worst teams in the league. Which is what you do when to DFA him. But its a complement to say that we value your off-the field contributions to the team and want them to continue (off the field). We pay him one way or another. If Lohse sees the handwriting on the wall and decides to hang up the cleats, offering him an opportunity to coach might be an opportunity he wants. If he thinks he has a chance to pitch elsewhere, then the offer doesn't make sense.
  11. It was pretty much the consensus that Braun would remain at or near his peak longer than Fielder and certainly to age 33 or 34. That certainly isn't the case in 2015. Braun's trend is downward. Of course, so was Fielder's trend until this year. He dropped off quickly when he left the Brewers, then had back surgery and most (I) thought he was done. This year he is one point off of leading the lead in BA.
  12. My first thought was, "that's not horrible". But then I questioned whether 505 was SLG or OPS... it was OPS: 216 .231 .275 .505
  13. Defensive Substitution: Jonathan Oquendo replaces right fielder David Denson, batting 4th, playing second base. Some players add value with flexibility. I think Denson just needs to focus on 1B...unless this is a signal that he isn't cutting it at 1B (gulp!). But I've read elsewhere that his 1B defense took a big step forward this year... With such a big hole at 1B in our system (and such a glut of OFers), I don't think Denson needs to work on flexibility...
  14. How do you get those two in a BP together??? That would be Magnif-ious!
  15. How about offering an assistant coaching job at his current salary? I doubt it will fly because he is contracted to pitch and not coach. But unless he thinks he can pitch next year, it might behoove him to start the next step now.
  16. If he stays at 820 for the better part of the contract, it's not disastrous based on inflation, but it wasn't the point of the extension. I don't think anyone thought Braun was going to be 900+ OPS for the last years of his contract (even ignoring his PEDs or the general decline in offense in the league). You pay the tail end to get the main years. Still, its hard to predict if he will end like AROD or Soriano... If he can hit 800+ OPS for the rest of his career, his contract will be an unmitigated success! That is still in the top 50% of all OFers this year.
  17. Seems some still think he's a good player. He IS a good player. His 900+OPS days are probably gone, but he is still a 850 OPS type player and borderline All-star OF. In the post PEDs era, a 850 OPS is actually pretty good. He is currently 14th for MLB OFers in OPS. (If you want to be depressed, just look that Nelson Cruz, Lorenzo Cain, Michael Brantley and Geraldo Parra are all above him) At his salary, I'm not sure how many people will go after him for a trade. But he still is a good player.
  18. I wonder if he is homesick? I've lived in another country before (where English isn't he first language) and there is a psychological cycle that kicks in after 4-6 weeks. You go into a "I'm tired of this" lull, then you come out of it after another month or so. Its well known enough that it was actually taught in my cultural training prior to moving to that country.
  19. Next Scotty Po?? Late bloomer? Sure. Yet, that doesn't make him anything like Podsednik High draft pick, late bloomer, left handed, little power, mediocre defense in center... They are a little alike... give him a hot wife and better stealing and they could be twins
  20. I almost wrote the OP to state "without speed or the hot wife", but I wasn't sure of Peterson's marital status. The power in CF shouldn't matter so much. Scott didn't either. If he is putting up a 700-750 OPS in CF with decent defense, that is a quality player. Any opinions on his defense in CF? I don't see enough games to notice much. If he keeps up the solid play this year, I'd prefer to see him in CF next year (let Reed and Maverick continue at AAA), then see if we can flip him for the El Caballo of 1B/3B.
  21. Based on the last couple of minutes of that podcast (do yourself a favor and listen to the entire 11 minutes), we should join Joe Block (his tweet) and refer to Phillips as "Maverick" whenever possible going forward. See how easy? I haven't listened to this yet, but I did hear Joe taking about it during a brewer game over the weekend. In the name of all great BF.net nicknames, I wholeheartedly agree. Maverick it shall be
  22. I'm not sure of his defense in center, but Scott wasn't lauded for his defense either. And he doesn't have the steals, but otherwise he is a high draft pick that is blooming late. Thoughts? Worth filling centerfield until Brett takes it?
  23. Roache or Braun. Who makes more sense to move to 1B?
  24. I suppose if Michael Reed keeps killing AAA and does well in ST, he might get a chance to start in CF. I hadn't thought about that. Short term, that could work. I expect Santana coming up next year and move Braun out of RF. If Khris Davis returns as Khrush Davis the rest of this year, I can see them motivated to trade out Lind and move Braun. Otherwise, Khris might go packing instead. I've long been a KD fan, but with some above average guys behind him, he won't stick around if he is just average.
  25. Since a SP rotation thread was out there, I thought I'd start the same for position players. My main intentions is to show where our weaknesses are for the starting positions. I've left out anyone that would normally be considered a utility only player (Gomez or Schafer): Probable depth chart (pending any FAs or trades of course): C Lucroy Maldonado Weisenburger Centeno 1B Lind Braun Rogers Clark 2B Gennett Segura Sardinas Rivera 3B Perez Herrera Rogers SS Segura Sardinas Rivera Arcia LF/RF Braun Santana Davis Reed Roache CF Peterson Wren Phillips Taylor If we were to forget about service time or anything else, I can see this as our most talented lineup: C Lucroy Maldonado Weisenburger Centeno 1B Braun* Rogers Clark 2B Gennett Segura Sardinas Rivera 3B Perez Herrera Rogers SS Arcia Segura Sardinas Rivera LF/RF Santana Reed Davis Roache CF Phillips Peterson Wren Taylor * Assuming a Lind trade... The things that jump out to me is the hole at 3B and the depth at 1B and C. Probably no surprises there, but its nice to see the depth all in one spot. That potential OF looks quite exciting!
