  1. I'm pretty sure that if the Yankees or Red Sox held such a streak over Baltimore, we'd never hear the end of it. That's fine. Like someone mentioned, it's a fluke deal. Among the reasons Pirate fans have to be embarrassed with their favorite team's management, this is near the bottom of the barrel. For us, it's more entertaining than anything else. Personally, I'm just happy we seem to have figured out how to win at PNC.
  2. Did Grayson just ask if the Brewers were going to leave their relief pitcher (0 ABs since 2005) in the game after letting him bat for himself in the ninth? My goodness.
  3. My $100-per-walk idea from last weekend is starting to look pretty brilliant. I'd be willing to up it to $200 for unintentional four-pitch walks like DiFelice's gem.
  4. Why is it that we don't have any pitchers who are capable of throwing the ball over the plate consistently? Is it that hard? EDIT: Obviously, I know it's hard, otherwise more people would be capable of doing it. So don't take that literally. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. Teams with real budgets and real payroll constraints are simply not going to make the playoffs every year. For Melvin to have sensed the opportunity a year ago, and then pulled the trigger on a move to help make it happen was a very, very good thing. It's not an opportunity that will present itself every year, and if it doesn't happen again for two or three years (or more), we'll all be grateful that management took the chance in 2008, even if Matt LaPorta is an All-Star by then.
  6. Fitting that Sheffield would hit his 500th off a LOOGY pitching against a righty for the team Sheffield quit on back in the day. How is that fitting? I have no clue. It just is.
  7. Dang baserunning mistakes. Unfortunately, endaround, Mike Rivera is not a baserunning savant. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  8. IMHO, it's patently unfair to dump on a great deal the Brewers were able to make as a "salary dump", while ignoring the facts behind the Lee deal. At the time, the Brewers were trying to win. They had no chance of re-signing El Caballo, and they knew it. Instead of running the risk of not making the playoffs and also losing Lee for nothing but draft picks, Melvin made a move for a guy who would be around for at least one full season, could help the Brewers make a legitimate run at the playoffs, and then may be signable. All those things happened. Meanwhile, Carlos Lee hasn't been in the playoffs once since he was with the White Sox.
  9. How about making the pitchers each put $100 in a jar every time they unintentionally walk a guy?
  10. 1. The Mariners' ownership had more money than we did, hence their ability to sign Richie in the first place. I know we got a good return on that trade with Arizona, but do you think we made that deal because we thought Richie sucked? 2. I'm trying to be realistic about this. I don't see Mark A. eating $25 million in salary over two bad starts to begin the 2009 season. Sheffield only had one year left on his deal, so it's not exactly comparable.
  11. I'm going to believe in Suppan, if for no other reason than that I don't have a choice. He's not going anywhere. The Brewers can't trade him, and they can't release him. He's a smart guy, so let's hope he can at least achieve mediocrity. That way he stops embarrassing himself and this team on national television. Bottom line is that the pitching staff is a mess right now. Suppan is the poster boy for it, but if we don't get the offense going at 7-8 runs a game, we're not going to win a lot until some pitchers step up. I trust Gallardo to give us quality starts, and Bush and Looper are not superstars, but will work hard. Suppan is a mess, Parra has to be better, and the bullpen is atrocious. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Macha will have the team playing much better in August and September than they are now. You can say "That wouldn't take much" and not be totally wrong, but the reality is that his predecessor was not good at getting good teams to play better ball down the stretch.
  12. Until the players decide to stop playing stupid baseball, we're going to give runs away and lose games. It's not even a matter of guys making dumb physical errors. Overthrows and drops and bobbles happen to even the best defensive players. Instead, they're ignoring basic fundamentals that they're taught when they're ten years old. Drives me nuts. Luckily, this staff has 157 games to get them going the right way. With Macha's history of his teams being better in the fall than they are in the spring, I'm not worried very much. Just aggravated when I see a guy take his eye off a simple throw from the outfield.
  13. In true Rickie Weeks fashion, he had to make that interesting by practically jogging the first 30 feet. I don't care today. That was a wonderful ending to a fun game!
  14. This one's meh with me. I'm pretty sure both he and Hart could have a small village of mice living on their faces and they wouldn't know it.
  15. Sorry, Stevo. I sometimes forget the blue. I thought that one was kind of obvious, though. I mean, these beards look stupid, but I'm mainly jealous because I can't grow a good one of my own. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Well, on the bright side, the Giants shouldn't score this many runs the rest of the series, so we're okay there.
  17. Well, giving up eight runs to a terrible offensive team is probably not a good start to a playoff run. Thank goodness the schedule has a few games left in it, because this one is totally underwhelming.
  18. Is no one on this team capable of shaving? Come on, Dave. You make much money. Buy a Norelco. Or did I wake up and inherit a hockey team playing baseball with Brewers shirts on? That might explain the pitching issues.
  19. Can't we fire someone? Come on. Strikes, Seth. See? Was that so hard?
  20. So yeah it's Opening Day, but you have a bunch of games in a row coming up. Is this the time to burn (at least) four innings out of a bullpen that's going to pitch more than its fair share, or is it time to see if Suppan can suck it up and pitch like it's the 2006 playoffs for the first time since it was the 2006 plaayoffs? (Sorry for the run-on.) Nice to see we can still run ourselves out of, well, runs. At least Cameron stood there long enough to let Kendall get to first easily.
  21. Yeah, let's hope that the Cardinals bullpen continues to do that once in a while. Great article about Sabathia in SI. At least it seems he'll do a lot of good with that money he got from the Yankees. I'm sure the "He's too fat" arguments are already underway on New York radio.
  22. I, too, am looking forward to a manager who holds players accountable and actually understands how to set a team up to win games once in a while. It should be glorious. I was a big fan of Macha's work in Oakland, thought his firing was Beane's biggest mistake to date, and I think we've assembled a solid staff under him. Unlike last season, when I felt this team did some great things but fell short of their potential, I think this one is not as talented but could actually be better. Player of the Year: Ryan Braun, He'll shake off the muscle issue and hit 45 home runs, continuing to establish himself as the face of the franchise. Pitcher of the Year: Yovani Gallardo. 21 wins. ERA around 3.20 or maybe lower. He'll become our new horse. Breakout of the Year: Rickie Weeks. I think this is the season he starts to get it. Maybe I just want to blame too much on Ned, but this guy has too much talent to stink all the time. Unsung Hero: Craig Counsell. He won't hit for a crap, but I'm looking for him to take more of a leadership role than ever with the young infielders. Disappointment of the Year: He won't be Gagne, but I don't think Trevor Hoffman will pan out very well, as cool as it was to make that move. Overall, I see an 88-win team that is good enough to sneak into the playoffs. They'll be more dangerous when they get there, too. No matter what they thought of Ned, that late change had to be somewhat shocking for many of the players. This team will be more relaxed heading into October.
  23. Sadly, this is not a rule. It should be. Instead, sports leagues continue to discourage FSN's investment in HD equipment for their regional outlets by not either A) requiring that all broadcasts be done in HD; or B) stipulating that season package customers be allowed to receive the "other team's" feed if it's in HD and the local team isn't. I've encountered this issue numerous times during hockey season. I have NHL Center Ice, but have been left frustrated by how seldom FSN North does Wild games in HD. Yet, when they play someone who is doing the game in HD, that feed is blacked out here in favor of the non-HD and awful-looking Wild broadcast.
