  1. Garland and the Diamondbacks have agree to terms to a one year deal worth between $6-$8 million. Even though I am not a huge fan of him, the Brewers could have at least tried
  2. I think they already tried to solve the LH bat problem with signing Counsell, Nixon, and Duffy. Think the Crew are hoping one of Nixon or Duffy will be able to produce.
  3. I am a little upset as well even though the market is not very good with FA pitchers. It makes me more mad that they may want to wait until the all star break to acquire a pitcher. LOL, with the rotation depth now we won't even be in contention. Take a chance on a Minor League deal on one of the pitchers. Recently, they said they are going to look at options on waivers or trades during ST. I think this year's ST will be VERY IMPORTANT considering the market is bad right now.
  4. Aging Abreu vs. a young Hart I will take Corey over Bobby at this point. Before I was all for trading Hart for pitching if we could sign Dunn. Now Abreu is different and costs a lot. Plus, no way he is going to want to play in Milwaukee
  5. Looks like Garland and Arizona are closing in on a deal. They offered 2 years and $13-$14M for him two weeks ago. I think he realizes that with the current economic market, he isn't going to get a better deal than that. We would probably have to do 2 years and $14.5 to get him considering no one really wants to come to Milwaukee.
  6. Kris Benson- CHONE- 13GS, 4-4 77 innings, 84 hits, 42K/25BB, 4.79 ERA, VALUE= $1.7M MARCEL- 3-4 60 innings, 63 hits, 38K/22BB, 4.58 ERA Chuck James- CHONE- 24GS, 7-7 124 innings, 126 hits, 92K/54BB, 4.86 ERA, VALUE= $2.5M MARCEL- 6-6 89 innings, 88 hits, 68K/37BB, 4.65 ERA Jason Jennings- CHONE- 18GS, 5-6 103 innings, 113 hits, 63K/45BB, 4.89 ERA, VALUE= $3.4M MARCEL- 3-7 83 innings, 90 hits, 56K/33BB, 4.99 ERA
  7. Here are a few sources and their projections for some current FA pitchers that the Brewers may look at. John Garland- CHONE- 30GS, 10-11 189 innings, 222hits, 98K/53BB, 4.71 ERA, VALUE= $7.5M BILL JAMES- 30GS, 10-11 186 innings, 203 hits, 93K/57BB, 4.38 ERA, MARCEL- 11-9 179 innings, 199 hits, 94K/52BB, 4.50 ERA, Odalis Perez- CHONE- 26GS, 7-8 134 innings, 154 hits, 84K/46BB, 4.84 ERA, VALUE= $4.6M BILL JAMES- 30GS, 8-11 171 innings, 192 hits, 113K/48BB, 4.51 ERA MARCEL- 7-11 151 innings, 176 hits, 103K/54BB, 4.95 ERA Tony Armas- CHONE- 21GS, 5-6 102 innings, 111 hits, 72K/34BB, 4.68 ERA, VALUE= $4.2M MARCEL- 3-4 61 innings, 65 hits, 45K/24BB, 4.94 ERA Josh Fogg- CHONE- 24GS, 6-8 129 innings, 151 hits, 70K/46BB, 5.16 ERA, VALUE= $2.5M BILL JAMES- 15GS/21G, 3-6 83 innings, 97 hits, 44K/28BB, 5.28 ERA MARCEL- 6-7 110 innings, 126 hits, 69K/41BB, 5.32 ERA Mark Mulder- CHONE- 12GS, 2-4 57 innings, 72 hits, 29K/27BB, 6.16 ERA, VALUE= $400K MARCEL- 3-4 55 innings, 64 hits, 38K/23BB, 5.48 ERA I like Odalis Perez as the possible option. I will add some more in a bit. Comments?
  8. Good post endaround. Reports are showing that the DBacks may be close to signing Garland. He rejected an offer two weeks ago from Arizona that was said to be in the 2yr/$13-$14 range. Talks have resumed. I don't think with the market that the offer actually would go up.
  9. Ben Sheets will be a Ranger soon. They seem to want him quite a bit. I believe the Mets will end up re-signing Perez.
  10. if sheets signs with texas, which is more and more likely, we won't get a very good pick considering Texas is #14 and the top 15 are protected.
  11. Don't believe Perez rumor By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel Jan. 27, 2009 8:51 a.m. I just saw this report that Jon Heyman said on the MLB Network that the Brewers might have interest in free agent lefty Oliver Perez. Don't count on it. When I ran Perez's name by Brewers general manager Doug Melvin recently, he showed virtually no interest for two reasons: 1. Melvin doesn't think he's worth the money he is seeking (Perez led the NL in walks last year and can be very erratic). 2. Melvin doesn't want to forfeit the first-round draft pick to sign a Class A free agent. So, I think this is mostly a smokescreen provided by Perez's agent, Scott Boras. The Brewers, of course, have "interest" in any pitcher that might help them. But there are varying degrees of interest, from "very slight" to "highly interested." I fully expect Perez to re-sign with the Mets at some point. Boras is probably trying to create a market that isn't there for his client, which is an agent's job.
  12. I really didn't think about the options that the Brewers have. Great post by sbry! The Crew have a high number of tickets sold already for 2009, prices are up, and they seem to build on the 2008 playoff performance. They may push the payroll because the economy is so bad and it should be a buyers market. The Yankees already spent wayyy to much for the guys they received. Just think if they waited a while to sign Tex, CC, or Burnett.
  13. I know he was injured and was pointing that out with his poor statistics. Please don't judge my posting. I am also saying that Mulder is not the answer to our problems.
  14. Other possibilities: BYUNG HUN-KIM - I dont even know if he plays anymore but is a FA. - Released by the Pirates JOSH TOWERS - Struggled a bit in 2007 but does have some experience. - in 2008 was in the Minors and posted a 6-7 record with a 6.27 era TONY ARMAS JR - Could be a reliever as well if starting doesn't work - Signed for $1M last year - Had a very good AAA (88k/20bb 2.54 era) but struggled with the Mets in limited usage
  15. I hate Mark A. quote about the upcoming season. Said something like: I don't want to spend now because if we contend, we can sign a major deal at the deadline. Come on Mark! Our rotation needs a little depth and we need to sign one of these guys to a Minor League deal now! The market is low and offering a deal to one of these guys would be a good move. See what they have in the Minors and hopefully they can contribute. No one has even been in contact with James.
  16. I liked him in the beginning but have sense said no. He is inconsistent and will cost too much for the Brewers. Plus, I think he re-signs with the Mets.
  17. Looks like Garcia is going to be off the board. I am up in the air with Mulder though. His MLB stats have been bad the past 2 years and his Minor League isn't much better.
  18. Griffey won't even want to become a Brewer. Playing sparingly is not what he is looking for. He sure is going to want to play more than 2-3 times a week
  19. MY point exactly with trying to sign one of these guys on a Minor League deal and if they perform, it is a huge steal!
  20. Saw on MLBTR that Bucco Blog suggested a trade of Adam LaRoche for Sanchez? Sanchez is a promising young pitcher. LaRoche is good for 20HR and 85RBI but strikes out a lot (128,131,122 last 3 years). I know this is a rumor and suggested by a blog site, but what would it take for us to get Sanchez? I think Corey Hart is way too much considering they are suggesting LaRoche.
  21. Counsell, Brewers Agree To Deal By Ben Jones [January 23 at 12:36pm CST] Free agent infielder Craig Counsell has reached preliminary agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers for a one-year, $1MM contract, a source told Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. After spending the past two seasons with the Brewers, Counsell became a free agent when the team declined his $3.4MM club option at the start of the offseason, Rosenthal notes. Counsell, 38, appeared in 110 games for Milwaukee last season, batting .226 with a .355 on-base percentage, one home run and 14 RBI. He is a .255/.343/.344 career hitter. The Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals also had interest in Counsell's services.
  22. Figured I would open a thread about the payroll even though many have been talking about it. We now know that the payroll stands somewhere between $81-$85 according to Mark. We signed Counsell today to a 1/1M contract. Here are some options that are worthy of a possibility and at least a look. Please let me know about your opinions. First of all, we are looking at a #4-#5 type pitcher unless a trade happens. KRIS BENSON - Did not play the last 2 years in the MLB. He is from Superior, Wisconsin and could be an option to end his career here if he wants to. - Brewers are on the list of teams that are going to watch him throw - Could be cheap considering he came off a 1-6 record with a 5.78 era in the Minors last season. - He made $7M in 2007. Looking far less than that this season. Probably a Minor League contract JOSH FOGG - Struggled in the MLB last season after posting good numbers in AAA. - His ERA will hover around 5 - Made $400,000 in 2008. Another Minor League constract CHUCK JAMES - Struggled last season as well but had 2 very good years before 2008. - Lefty - Made $427,500 in 2008. ODALIS PEREZ - Not a bad season last year with Washington - Made $850,000 in 2008 I like the options. Tell me what you all think
  23. I agree that he is not the best hitter, but he does put the bat on the ball. Also, his plate discipline is good. I still remember the bases loaded walk that he drew. If the price is low, we should sign him.
  24. I was looking into the option in the past and have come to this conclusion: I don't think they will get another LH bat because they signed Chris Duffy and Trot Nixon (both LH) to Minor League Contracts in the hopes of being the next Gabe Kapler. The FA market is not really promising for the Brewers in the outfield department besides Dunn. Like I said in a previous post, if they sign Fielder to the 2 year contract for 19M, and there current payroll is 76M (assumed Fielder would get 7 in arb.) that bumps the payroll to 78M for 2009. 81M was last year's starting payroll, so i see us now having between 4-6M to spend. To be honest, Nixon and Duffy could produce similar numbers for far less $$$ than some current FA. Although I do like the idea of signing Edmonds and giving him a shot to play, I don't really see it happening. If it did, we could trade Cameron to a contender at the deadline and free up some money. Trot Nixon had a poor 2008 season but in previous years before that he had obp of .357, .373, and .342.
  25. I will pass on Casey. Agree that Nelson and Nixon can produce numbers
