  1. So my understanding is that Cespedes can become a free agent after 2015, and Lester's on the last year of his contract so he'll be a free agent after this season. When I first saw the trade, it sounded like a lot to give up for a half-season of Lester, but then I looked up Cespedes. Since his first year in the league where he put up a wRC+ of 137, he's been just a bit above average at the plate. Just back of the envelope, Cespedes is owed about $15MM for the next 1.4 seasons, at his current production level he wouldn't be worth significantly more than that. Lester will give them a nasty four-man playoff rotation of Lester - Gray - Kazmir - Samarzdzdzzzijjja, though I'm not sure if Kazmir or Samardzija goes to the pen if they go to three men.
  2. I thought it was Matt Wise for Adam Dunn that was the classic online rumor.
  3. I'm not sure why there would be significant concern or need to replace Khris Davis; he's still putting up near a league average line vs. RHP, but his career line against RHP is a .244/.304/.461/.765; add in the fact that he dominates LHP, and he's at worst a league-average type of player. Any upgrade over Davis would carry a significant cost, whether that be players or contract dollars. Napoli is intriguing. He has limited no-trade protection per Cots, so not sure if that would be an issue. At ~$7MM remaining this year and $16MM next season, I doubt he'd require much in terms of prospects. Peavy would just be silly.
  4. Marshall was undoubtedly my favorite player to watch in person during his UNC days. Here's some vintage Marshall to Henson:
  5. I'll agree that overall compared to Pittsburgh's announcers these guys are pretty good. Gotta finish this one out. Cincinnati entered this series right there in the division race, and a sweep puts them back by a pretty decent margin (5.5 games).
  6. I'd go watch more minor league games if this were commonplace. Of course, if I were a season ticket holder this would get annoying after about five innings.
  7. Also, that graphic doesn't really make sense. Every at-bat has a 0-0 count, many have a 1-0 count or a 1-1 count. It would be more interesting if they put the numbers in home-run rate. The one that is really interesting to me is that there are that many 0-2 HR's, I thought those were a bit more rare.
  8. On the downside, Darwin Barney sounds like a kid who has had his lunch money stolen about 359 times in the past year.
  9. ...and just like that, Braun's ISO is only 0.30 points below his career average. The top half of that lineup against RHP with Gennett healthy is really impressive, so hopefully Gennett doesn't miss too much time.
  10. These really shouldn't take this long. Everybody knows the right call after seeing one replay, but still they deliberate...
  11. How well does Barney handle the rest of the infield? It looks like he at least has some history playing SS and 3B, so given his decent career numbers against LHP (wRC+ is 89) that sounds like a nice addition to the infield.
  12. Easy, bud. Can't hate a feller for lighting up an old flame!
  13. I remember having this discussion in the Fielder days. I suspect it's a lot more difficult than most fans think for a guy like that to lay down a good bunt up the 3B line. And even if the odds are 45%, is a 45% chance at a single better than just letting your big guy hack it? Probably not.
  14. That's got to be pretty disappointing for Wooten, having just started to bounce back/forth to the majors at age 29. He's put up decent numbers in 60 total innings, so hopefully there's a spot for him at the back of somebody's bullpen. Jeffress gives this bullpen the potential to be really tough down the stretch. With K-Rod, Smith, Jeffress, and this man who is masquerading as Zach Duke, they should be in pretty good shape from the 7th inning on for the rest of the year.
  15. Clayton Kershaw's ERA since 2010 is 2.32, the lowest in the majors of any pitcher with over 300 IP. Next is Brad Ziegler, and the closest starter is either Medlen (2.75, but only 57 starts) or Cueto (2.78). Is there even any debate right now over who (i) the best position player and (ii) the best pitcher are? It's just too bad they both play on the West coast...
  16. Weeks. I'm fine with Gennett being the more productive 3/4 of a platoon. If he learns to hit lefties that's great, but he would need to improve quite a bit to be better than a fairly cheap platoon partner.
  17. Garza? More like Gar...like the fish, no not like the fish they have sharp teeth and are quite intimidating.
  18. When I saw this for some reason I thought this was a new thread. Then I remembered Dan Uggla isn't very good at baseball anymore.
  19. But that can't be correct, I thought we only care once every four years!
  20. Yeah...that was a bit painful. Was there a tribute to Tony Gwynn or at least a nice mention of him during the game? I didn't watch past the 5th inning, but I don't think I remember them mentioning him. I love @bestfansstl.
  21. It actually looks like most of the sight-lines along the 3B line are better than in stadiums with a track. It's not great by any means, but for a baseball stadium, I'm betting you can get at least 15,000 - 20,000 people in pretty good seats. Any ideas of what attendance is supposed to look like? I wonder if a team like Liverpool would ever consider a US series sort of like the NFL London game. I can't say I'd be all that excited to see a friendly match in the US, but it would be pretty neat to get to an actual premier league game. Probably not going to happen what with Champions League, FA Cup, etc., but it would be pretty cool.
  22. The internet is wonderful. It lets people say stupid things, spread them all around the world, and then I get to laugh at them.
  23. No. (Unless they get a comically stupid offer for Gomez or Lucroy. But that ain't happenin.)
  24. Yeah, if given the option of starting the game with 10 men versus starting the game with a PK, I'd think the PK would be better for Brazil. I want to see Messi win one today with a trademark world cup moment. But, I'm going with 2-1 Germany if I'm a betting man (which I'm not).
