  1. Braun's ISO: 2007 - 2012: 3,854 PA's, .255 ISO, ranked 7th out of 385 qualifying players 2013 - 2014: 706 PA's, .206 ISO, would be ranked 18th out of 126 qualifying players if Braun qualified I'm not sure how you can possibly watch Braun this season and not be concerned about his power going forward. I don't know what's going on with his thumb, but something obviously isn't right with Braun.
  2. \on{reversemojo} Ack, not Overbay again. Horribly unproductive this year. \off{reversemojo}
  3. It's not just the play last night, watching him all season he doesn't seem to make very many tough plays going back on the ball. When he's hitting .300/.360/.540 it's easier to dismiss his defensive flaws, but when he's putting up a .280/.330/.470 type of line with below average defense and earning ~$20 million, it's easy to see why there is frustration among fans. The contract is by no means an albatross yet; even if he's a 130 wRC+ type of player and isn't too bad in the outfield, he'll be worth most of what he's getting paid. I'm just hoping that his defense doesn't get any worse in his 30's, and if it does, he's able to move to learn how to play 1B.
  4. Probably something that isn't worth anybody's time look up, but can anybody remember a team with more "#3 starters" than the Brewers right now? You could probably make a reasonable argument for any order 1 - 4 between Garza, Lohse, Peralta, and Gallardo; ERA's are all within a quarter of a run of each other (3.32 - 3.58). On top of that, career ERA's of Fiers and Nelson (using career due to sample size, still obviously small with Nelson) are 3.75 and 3.59, respectively. With the race this close, I probably wouldn't mess with a 6-man rotation, but I'd be hard-pressed to take Fiers out of the rotation right now given his performance. Anybody have an idea on Nelson's innings cap this season? He's thrown 150-160 each of the past few years and he's already at 158, on pace for probably 190 - 200 if he pitches on regular rest.
  5. I've listened to enough other announcers on MLB.tv (Pirates) to the point where Schroeder doesn't bug me too much. My biggest pet peeve is that seemingly when a pitch is just about anywhere in the zone and gets popped, he says the pitcher "just hung it up there" or something of the like.
  6. It should be considered, but we certainly can't dismiss the possibility that the reason the club hasn't already moved him there is that they don't think he could hack it. He's decent in the outfield, so for me the main reason I'd want him moved is if the club thinks it would be easier for him to stay healthy.
  7. The Cubs can't even beat a protest.
  8. Mike Fiers' career numbers: 180 IP, 3.75 ERA, 3.54 FIP, 3.51 xFIP, 9.10 K/9, 2.55 BB/9, 1.10 HR/9, 33.9% GB%. The fact of the matter is that anybody who only gets ~1/3 of balls in play on the ground is going to get knocked out of the park fairly often. But given his career line, I don't see any reason that he shouldn't be given a chance in some rotation somewhere; he'll likely never be more than a #3 starter, but I can't imagine there isn't some team out there who wouldn't be happy to slot him into the back end of the rotation. For now, it's great to be able to grab him from the minors to fill-in for injured starters, and if he continues to pitch the way he has for the next 6-7 starts, perhaps that makes the team more comfortable about dealing Lohse if the price is right.
  9. Are his H/A splits the result of wonky West Coast ballparks when he was in San Diego? If not, then I don't personally look into it that much. (But IIRC certain ballparks like Colorado Springs are basically launching pads).
  10. Alarm bells are ringing right now (4.41 ERA since break). You don't risk paying $15 million for 37 year old starters. See Bronson Arroyo. Deal him while he still has value. Well luckily they have 1.2 more seasons to evaluate him before deciding on the QO; if he continues to put up a 4.41 there's no need to offer, but if he continues to be a ~3.5 ERA guy it may well be worth the gamble, especially with Gallardo gone.
  11. If Lohse continues to put up 3.5 ERA and stays healthy, I imagine they'll give him a QO if there are no alarm bells. He's getting up there in years, but even if a QO is 1y/15MM, that's not too much more than he's been worth, and if he has hopes of something like 2/25, they may well walk with a pick.
  12. So rough estimate...They'll non-tender Estrada and won't pick up Weeks' option. Looks like if they pick up Ramirez at $14MM, Gallardo at $13MM and Parra gets about $6MM in arbitration that puts them around $80MM in salary. The only position players I see them needing assuming Ramirez is back is a platoon partner for Gennett and a 1B. The bullpen will also need some work. https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tz1FL3X6KldYXIoGOHXpv6A&output=html
  13. There should also be incentives for players to grow amusing moustaches.
  14. Reports of his transfer to Roma were premature, but now it's looking like Spurs may be close to signing Yedlin for $3.5MM. http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/69/transfer-zone/2014/08/08/5019466/sources-tottenham-finalizing-yedlin-deal Not sure what his playing-time situation looks like for Spurs should he move there after the MLS season. He's certainly going to be behind Kyle Walker on the depth chart from the looks of it, but hopefully he'll find enough playing time or get loaned out.
  15. I'm wondering if Everton will be a common pick for newly converted soccer fans in the US after the World Cup. I've always found myself cheering for the best of the rest teams in the EPL, so I'm thinking this is a good move on my part. Don't see any great matchups the first week, so it'll be standard cheer for Burnley to take a point from Chelsea kind of weekend.
  16. His K/9 rate is down to 6.69; I suspect he's got some type of nagging injury or that he's just starting to wear down. That's nearly 800 innings from 2011 - 2013 including the playoffs, about 260 per year. His velocity is down quite a bit too.
  17. Probably time to start a new thread. In most important soccer news, I've think I've to cheer for Everton this year. I've never supported a particular team in the past, but I figure I might as well. We're five days away...Gotta get some extra housework done this week so I can spend Saturday morning in bed watching on my iPad until noon.
  18. His plate discipline numbers are really ugly. Check out his O-Swing and Z-Swing percentages. There are other guys (e.g. Sandoval, Gomez) who swing at more out of the zone, but Segura has a much lower Z-Swing than anybody above him. Of course, even if Segura found his way to a .300 BABIP he'd probably be hitting more like .260/.290/.340, which is much more acceptable but still pretty ugly. Back to the topic, Rollins would probably be good for a league-average clip at the plate, and most likely be a pretty sizable improvement. At ~$15MM for the end of 2014 and all of 2015, this would make sense if they were ready to give up on Segura and wait for a guy like Arcia, but as a platoon or backup I'll pass. (Also, I never noticed before but Segura has hit righties quite a bit better than lefties in his career, so given that Rollins also hits better against RHP in his career a platoon is really not a good option).
  19. He's 130th out of 150 qualified players in LD%; I should have clarified that when I say it seems a bit low, I mean I'd think it would be about .290 or so going forward, but I just don't see him putting up a .330 BABIP like last year unless he starts driving the ball.
  20. Yeah - outside of a few Segura in the 2-spot lineups, Roenicke has done a pretty nice job of constructing his lineups this year.
  21. People have been tinkering with an expected BABIP based on batted ball profiles for several years now...No reasonable SABR guy would ever tell you Yuni B should expect the same BABIP as Miguel Cabrera. I suspect Segura's .266 is a bit lower than it will be going forward, but his batted ball profile seems pretty poor, so despite his speed I'm not too optimistic about balls finding open space. http://www.hardballtimes.com/simple-xbabip-calculator/ http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/xbabip-spreadsheet/
  22. It's really nice now to be able to pull one of Davis/Parra and one of Gennett/Weeks off the bench for PH duties late in games. Really important that the Brewers were able to get that win last night; this keeps them 1.5 up on Pittsburgh and extends them to 2 up on St. Louis; if they can pull out one of the next two games this will have been a very good series.
  23. Not sure if it's better to go with the off-day lineup today or against Kershaw as a sacrificial lamb.
  24. I think that they also get Lackey in 2015 at league minimum because he missed a year for TJ? Can anybody shed light on this?
