2016 World Series: Cubs vs. Indians (Cubs win Series, 4-3)
Bombers replied to 1992casey's topic in Archived Game Threads
You think he cares? You think he vetoed because he thought the Rangers were a better chance to win the World Series? No that isn't why he vetoed. You damn right I think he cares. Who? Simply, who wouldn't want to play in a World Series? You can't tell me he doesn't second guess that decision. Hell, he would cash an extra $400,000 check when the Indians win the WS. And Yes, the tribe is going to win the WS. Actually I would say there is a healthy percentage of players whose priorities go (1) Make as much money as possible (2) Play in title game (in this case the World Series) Many forget that this is their job and to be frank their ability to never have to work again. (And to live lavishly their whole life) ... maximize cash. Only at ends of careers do you see athletes taking pay cuts to try and get a "ring" ... Mostly though, it's all about the cash. Lucroy may be bummed his team didn't make it, but he has said he didn't want to be moved to 1b for all of 2017 and that is where Cleveland told him he would be playing. Thus, he wanted to maximize his ability to make money and went with Texas as they guaranteed him being their catcher through end of 2017. After 2017, he will be up for a large contract if he plays like he did this year. Cash wins over playing championships. Heck it even wins in the eyes of the fans. Look at the prices of the tickets and the number of tickets available. Fans are selling their chance to "witness" history. Even though, they can witness the same history and pocket $2700 per seat in the nose bleeds. Many will opt for the cash over watching or playing in the game. Everyone has a price. What if I said I will pay you $20 million a year to play for the Marlins or $10 million a year to play for the Cubs. I would say most players will take the $20. -

Just remember what kinds of fans show up to Wrigley: -
All my teams are just run by stupid people from the top down. Tony Snell? Why? We could have had a lottery pick for MCW but Kidd wanted him. We sign Monroe. Both guys play like MCW and Monroe with no surprises, then we dump them for pennies on the dollar. Hopefully we can complete the Braun for Puig plus a bad contract and the year will be complete. Yeah!!!! I am all for Giannis playing the point. And if trading MCW allows him to do that more often (which obviously it does as what else can MCW do - he doesn't shoot well) then I am all for it. The MCW experiment failed, but at that time it was unknown where Giannis was going to end up. I am really looking forward to Giannis and Parker playing the 2 largest roles on the team. Lets see if those two are the players we need them to be.

I agree with where Monty57 is at. I would bring Carter back. I would have loved an OPS of .821 in 2014. He also sported an OBP that was better than Scooter's. Maybe the Brewers coach's found something in Spring training last year that helped him improve his power stroke. Maybe they feel he can improve again. The 3 highest SLG's on the team last year were Braun, Carter, Lucroy. 2 of those might be gone. His minor league stats were .283 / .378 / .535 / .913. His Major league stats have been .218 / .314 / .463 / .777. But this last year he was .222 / .321 / .499 / .821 This past year saw his SLG and OPS move towards his minor league numbers. Maybe the Brewers think they can improve his batting average and get him to .250, who knows. My guess is he will be back and I think he should be back.

I under estimated the Mad Bum. He now has 23 innings pitched in win or go home games and has given up 0 runs. If the Cubs face him twice (which would mean he is going in game 2 and then the win or go home game 5) then there could be trouble in the Windy City

Pick an item then. Ice cream? Brats? Cheeseburgers? What are you going to find at Miller Park that is cheaper, or even modestly more expensive than the same item at a restaurant? How much do you think that very same $8 dollar burrito would be at Miller Park? I guarantee it wouldn't be $8. That's my point. Whether it's unreasonable or not at a restaurant it's going to be even more expensive at the stadium. Again, I've never suggested they sell hot dogs for $1 all game every game. You can't just change my argument to make it worse. I understand the math. I get that if you sell it for less you have to sell more of them to make the same profit. Like I said, the Atlanta Falcons just slashed their concession prices. Let's see what happens with that before we claim either of us are right or wrong. I don't think you do understand. I don't "hate" anything. It's not my money they are spending so I couldn't care less what they do. I just thought that it was a very underwhelming announcement. And I'm apparently not the only one. You and I are on the same page with the underwhelming announcement. I think we disagree on the value for what you are getting. Sure the $5 dip and dots or the $5 soda, there isn't value there. I get that. But if you go with some of the more meal type options that are around $10 it is similar to what you would spend at a restaurant that pays a little more attention to quality vs just a regular fast food restaurant. One of my favorite events of summer is going to the Zoo Ala Carte with my family and trying out all the various vendors they bring in. I see Miller Park being similar to that. There are a lot of food options and I am always interested in trying something new. and I find the $10 cost associated with that something new item being fair.

That is a ridiculous price. You can get a pint of actually good beer for much less than that all over Madison. No kidding. If someone tried charging me $7 or $8 for 16-20 oz of Miller Lite anywhere other than a stadium or concert I'd laugh in their face. I agree that is a high price for a Miller Lite. However, what is being lost here is what the craft brew industry is doing not just here in WI but all accross the United States. It has drastically changed the landscape. Just look at a business who started in Madison and recently moved to Milwaukee MobCraft. https://www.mobcraftbeer.com/ They sell a 4 pack (22 oz bottles) of their craft brew of the month for $25. (Plus $15 for shipping) ... So $40 for 4 beers. And people are paying it. And to be frank, I would rather pay $9 for an IPA, which is the usual going rate at a game vs paying $7 for a miller lite. So keep on increasing the craft beer available at games.

Great American Ball Park has this as well, so efficient. I am going to guess, the Brewers will have this now too. St. Louis has it and it is the best way to go grab a beer. There was no line and there were a ton of people grabbing beer out of those coolers. For those who haven't seen it, it's like walking into a gas station and going to their coolers and having them stocked with a wide variety of beer (domestic and craft), water and soda.
-
I would just say beer prices are out of hand. I don't think the food is all that crazy, IMO. Beer is skyrocketing and it's absurd, especially with the large increase they put on craft beer. I was in San Fran in 2015 and we paid $24 for 2 beers. That's nuts. Sure they were some craft beer, but that's high. I am on board with you, I have significantly reduced the amount of liquid (Beer, soda, water) I will buy at stadiums.

Here is a slight rebuttal to all your comments. Here is a link I could find about the Packers 2005 financial report which is the only report made public. I couldn't find an actual link to their Financial Report and one from the last 10 years either. It's not on their website, not sure if anyone has a link to it. http://legis.wisconsin.gov/LaB/reports/Green%20Bay%20Packers.pdf Here is some key data from this report. $2.4 million in other revenues, which include revenue from concessions, parking, souvenir programs, and other sources. Concession revenue constitutes the largest source of revenue in this category. We attempted to report concession revenue separately but were prohibited from doing so by the Packers, based on restrictions in their contract with Promotion Management, Inc. That is in a 10 game season. I know it lumps concessions in with parking, programs and some other unmentioned items. The Packers have a fairly small parking lot compared to the Brewers sea of Parking they offer. But back to the report. It says in 2005, they had roughly ~70,000 people a game. So their attendance isn't even 1 million people per year and they made 2.4 million. I would say trim off the .4 which is probably parking and other. So maybe $2 million per year. The Brewers pull in 2-3 million people annually. If you take the ~2.4 million made (in 2005 money) on about 700,000 fans, add in some math (2,500,000 / 700,000 = 3.57 3.57 x 2 = $7.1 million. So with about 2.5 million fans, the Brewers will take in around $7 million from concessions. And to be frank, the food selection at Lambeau sucks so I am guessing they are leaving money on the table but probably make up for lack of food sales in beer sales. Those are some nicely selected items to drive home your point. Sheesh I don't think the variety of options they have for under $10 is all that different than me stopping at Qdoba and eating a $8 burrito. They have a large variety, you are in a stadium, so I would expect the increase of cost. I do not find it outrages. Sure on water, ya, that is one item I just don't get that they have to raise the price so high when you can just bring in your own. Also, have you ever been to a place like Sammy's, Martino's or the Dogg Haus? You will spend about $5 for a hot dog there too. I understand, that you hate they would actually spend money on improving something you have zero use for. But just think, there will be others (and I will guess a good amount) who are really going to like the changes.
-
Why you have to hate on the Bratchos? I did literally lol on your comment though. Chef version of DFA. Nice ... I am with you. I love me some good ballpark food. There is so much variety and some really good options. When I go with my kids, they don't want to tailgate. They just want to get into the game and watch BP and go to the kid zone. I am with you and the small few who say they will appreciate the change. I do agree that it is a little underwhelming with the hype, but I never really thought a lambeau / Busch stadium experience was going to happen. I was just hoping for a big tent outside for an official Brewers tailgate zone with a band, beer and some limited food options.

So who do you got? I have been thinking all year a World Series of Cubs vs Rangers although the Red Sox will be very tough to beat. Rangers are lucky they have the 1 seed. I am going to go with another team of ex-brewers winning the World Series. (Rangers) Here is who I have (Mets & Orioles lose in wild card game) Divisional Round Rangers over Jays Red Sox over Indians Cubs over Giants Nationals over Dodgers Championship Cubs over Nationals Rangers over Red Sox World Series Rangers over Cubs Odd stat: The top 5 team Era's in all of baseball, in order are: Cubs, Nationals, Mets, Giants, Dodgers.
-
Where did you get your numbers? They all are off from the ERA's I'm seeing. Not saying your point isn't right but just unclear on the numbers thing. He listed their FIP not ERA. Ya my mistake I was looking at their overall numbers and was reading FIP but wrote down ERA ... In the words of Harry Doyle - "I don't know what the hell he is thinking"

I agree with what Monty said. And in light of what tbwiesse is saying, what if I would have told you Our 4 of our 5 starters would look like: * Jimmy Nelson - 32 starts, 5.12 ERA * Wily Perlta - 31 starts, sent to AAA during year, and finish with a 4.83 ERA * Matt Garza - 19 starts with a 4.33 ERA * Chase Anderson - 31 starts with a 5.09 ERA We couldn't have gone for it if we wanted to this year. Those 4 alone would keep us from the playoffs with horrible pitching in 113 starts. Even with Guerra (3.70 ERA) and Davies (3.89 era) pitching well in 48 starts. This team wasn't even close to sniffing 500 even with keeping Segura and Davis much less making the playoffs. And as I have been saying, this team isn't even close to 500 for the 2017 season. Until this team gets some real starting pitching, we will continue to be a sub 500 team. So count me on the side that is all in on the continuous trading of players to find an awesome starting 5.

I would love something similar to the ballpark village they have built in St. Louis. That place is great. An awesome place to watch the game as it sits on top of Bush Stadium. However, that is located in downtown St. Louis with mounds of public transportation to and from. I just don't see how adding in a "ballpark village" is feasible within the current structure of the Miller Park district. We don't have a nearby train stop, we don't have the easy access and people able to just walk up to the "village" ... Would people pay the ~$15 to park to just hang out at a restaurant / bar? I guess I just don't see it. Plus there is actual seating in the ball park village that can see into Busch Stadium. At Miller park, that wouldn't work. Not trying to be a cynic, I like the idea and would love for something like that to happen but I just don't see it. I could see an official tailgate area opening in conjunction with a hotel being built. I think that alone would be a huge win and something long overdue.
