  1. I also vote for Narveson into the rotation.
  2. I read this on MLBTR: If Houston falls way out of it, Roy Oswalt could be made available, but it would be a massive PR hit. He's owed $31MM through 2011 with a $16MM option ($2MM buyout) for 2012, and would have to approve any trade. Dealing him would signify the start of a full rebuilding effort. This got me to thinking, can the Brewers and their $82 million payroll even compete in this years trade market? I don't think then can take on a salary like Oswalt's. Unless come all-star break, we are still 1 pitcher away from being true World Series contenders, are in/near first place, have no injuries and are pulling in crazy attendance numbers; I just don't forsee them being able to take on salary like they have in previous years. I have seen many posts that the Rangers have a window now and then again in 2-4 years. I think the Brewers are in a similar situation. They have a chance in the next 1.5 years with Prince. Post prince they will need a year or 2 to re-make a significant loss in the roster. So what do you think, do the Brewers have the money to make a mid season acquisition? (or even the prospects they would be willing to deal?)
  3. So if Prince is worth 8 years for $200 then what is Pujols worth? 8 years $240? ($30 mil a year) because however you compare it, Pujols is better. And he has a World Series ring. I like Prince but it would be extremelly risky to try and afford $25 million per year for just one player. In 3 years Braun, Gallardo and Prince would look like this: Year Gallardo Braun Prince Total $85 Mil $90 Mil (percentage of payroll) 2013 7.75 8.50 25 41.25 48.5% 45.8% 2014 11.25 10 25 46.25 54.4% 51.4% 2015 13 12 25 50 58.8% 55.6% Even with a $90 million payroll, in 2015 we would have 57% of our salary eaten up by 3 players. That would leave $45 million to cover the other 22 spots. It's doable, but the risk is extremelly high. For reference, this year the Cardinals have 50% of their team salaray taken up by Pujols, Carpenter, and Holliday.
  4. For those interested I found out they no longer announce who will be signing. Just go to home plate when the gates open.
  5. Figured I would get the post started as I will be at the game tonight. Quick question. I want to go early to take my daughter to Autograph Friday's; anyone know who will be signing? Or do they just not announce it? Brewers.com season long promotions just says 6-7 Brewers will be signing. Also any idea on where to go once inside the park? Thanks and Go Crew!!!
  6. Another comparison for having $40 million or so tied up in 3 players (which, if the Brewers can sign prince is what they will be looking at in a few years) is the Cardinals. Pujols, Holliday and Carpenter make $47.6 combined which is 50% of their $95 million 2010 payroll. So signing Prince is still doable.
  7. 95 Wins and 67 losses. I feel that escobar will be rookie of the year. Gallardo will be in the running for the cy young. Braun will be in the running for the triple crown and fielder finally surpasses his daddy in a single season HR total. Brewers vs Seattle world series is my pick. I will never pick the yankees because I hate the dark side.
  8. I am all for getting Hughes and the possible trade chips (Coffey, Hart, Salome, Braddock, Gamel) I am fine with utilizing. (Obviously not all 5) but I just don't see the Yanks entertaining this. I understand their rotation is set but as said already Vazquez and Pettite are on 1 yr deals. Insert Jaba and Phil for 2011 and their rotation stays pretty good. Now just like any other off season they can purchase a pitcher off of FA and then would keep Jaba or Phil in the pen. But maybe not. I hope Melvin calls Cashman but I don't see this going through, imo.
  9. Count me in on Duchscherer. I would assume, even without him pitching for a year and his prior injuries, he will find a contract similar to Harden's. I am going to say 6 million with a 10.5 million team option. The way I see it, the Brewers are already at 80 - 82 million with their signings and accounting for arbitration. Add in counsell (which I believe is a must when our starters are going to be McGehee, Weeks, and Escobar) and you are probably closer to 83 - 85 million. Add in Duchscherer and you are going to be around 90 million. Adding Duch would just remove them from making a mid season trade. Unless they trade someone like Hart or non tender Bush/McClung to save some dollars.
  10. Harden to the Rangers is what NBC is reporting. 1 year 7.5 million with a team option for 11.5 million. Link
  11. After the Wolf signing I still think one of these injury plagued starters is needed. If reports are true and Harden is only looking for a one year deal, you would have to imaging that the rest will fall into the same boat. We took a $10 gamble on Gagne before, I think the Brewers have to try and gamble. We can't afford the Lackey's of the world, so you need to try and hit lighting in a bottle and hope a guy like this has a big year.
  12. It's a gamble to hold onto Hart past this off season. I don't see his value staying idle. It will either go way back up after a very productive 2010 year or down it it is more of the same. If you can get John Maine for Corey Hart, I think you have to pull the trigger. Look what Hardy was worth. If we would have traded him a year ago we would have netted more. It's a gamble but I think finding a replacement for Hart is easier than finding a pitcher as good as Maine.
  13. If you could only pick 1, who is your pick? W-L ERA G GS CG IP WHIP H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB Duchscherer 31 - 24 3.14 219 27 1 426.2 1.123 7.8 0.9 2.3 6.9 3.02 Bedard 51-41 3.71 144 141 1 822 1.322 8.3 0.8 3.6 8.8 2.46 Sheets 86-83 3.72 221 221 18 1428 1.201 8.8 1 2 7.6 3.85 Harden 50-29 3.39 135 127 2 753.2 1.237 7.2 0.8 3.9 9.4 2.38 Is the door completely closed on Sheeter? Based off of the career numbers of these injury plagued careers, it looks like Harden is the next best. (Bedard is close behind) I didn't realize Duch only started for 1 year.
  14. I found the item below dated 8/14 from http://www.kffl.com/player/7739/mlb Christian Caple, of MLB.com, reports Seattle Mariners SP Erik Bedard's (shoulder) arthroscopic surgery Friday, Aug. 14, revealed a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Bedard will not be able to return to baseball-related activities for four to six months. Dr. Lewis Yocum also repaired an inflamed bursa during the surgery. Bedard will be in a sling for up to three weeks. The chances are slim that the Mariners will re-sign him after the season. So in short it looks like he will be back from Jan to March
  15. The Padilla who pitched for the Dodgers, yes. I like Padilla's walks / 9 but his WHIP, not so much.
  16. Wow!! But it seems as if no teams offered arbitration to any of their players. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/2010-mlb-free-a.html. This has to spell good news for the crew. The more free agents there are, the lower the salaries will be. With players like Wolf, Bedard, Davis, Garland, Harden, Padilla not offered arbitration, you would have to imagine the Brewers would be able to get 1 of their higher end targeted pitchers signed to a 2 year deal. Who do you think was the best starting pitcher not offered arbitration? Here are some stats from a few of the top starting pitchers not offered arb: Name TEAM G W L ERA IP WHIP OBA K/BB BB9 K9 H9 1. I would look at him for a possible platoon. Hopefully we get a steal, but his minor league years don't show me a whole lot.
  18. With our up the middle defense being Escobar, Weeks, and Gomez is it imperative that we get an above average defender at Catcher? How important is it that we have a hitter who can hit? And is it me, or does it seem like when we play against Bengie Molina it feels like we are playing against Joe Mauer with the numbers Molina has against us? Maybe a little tunnel vision here, but it seems like Molina would fit in perfect in our lineup. He has also done a great job with the young staff in SF. Not sure how much money we are going to spend here. Maybe we invite Salome, Lucroy and Rivera to camp and have them compete for the starting spot. Here are last years stats ... AVG OBP OPS Fld% CS% Molina 0.265 0.285 0.727 0.995 23% Kendall 0.241 0.331 0.636 0.992 20% Blanco 0.235 0.320 0.703 1.000 40% Rivera 0.228 0.325 0.668 1.000 22% Salome (AAA) 0.286 0.334 0.748 0.976 30% Lucroy (AA) 0.267 0.380 0.798 0.991 40%
  19. I think this is the types of moves the Brewers need to look into. McGehee straight up won't work but they do need help at 3 with Cantu being their everyday 1B. If we include a prospect and you might have a deal. The marlins are always looking to stay cheap. McGehee would suit them (price wise).
  20. Buster Olney writes that there could be come significant non-tenders. His article quotes "Executives say many of the names being discussed by teams as possible trade bait include a growing number of players with three to five-plus years of service time -- players who are eligible for arbitration. This is widely being read as a precursor to a wave of players in that group not being tendered contracts before the Dec. 12 deadline. "I think the market will get flooded with non-tenders," opined a veteran executive." Anyone have any guesses as to some possible non-tendered pitchers or arby eligble pitchers teams are looking to dump??
  21. Why not trade McGehee? He has a lot of value right now, especially if he finishes the year batting above 300. I am all for trading him or Gamel for a pitcher. I would also pickup Looper's option, as it would be easy to trade Looper or Bush with their $5 price tag with a McGehee or a hardy to net a starting pitcher. Think about it. If you are another team who needs a 3B or a SS and the Brewers want one of your starters, you will be more inclined to make the deal if you are netting a starter in return.
  22. I agree. You need to trade either Mat Gamel or Casey McGehee this off season. Both are worth a lot right now in a trade. If the one we keep flops, we have Taylor Green coming up behind him. Which gives us some security. What we would net in the trade is worth more than keeping Gamel in AAA for another year or putting McGehee on the bench again.
  23. I have to agree, this greatly reduces the trade value of Hardy. And nothing like all eyes on me for Escobar. He has been jammed into a tough spot and he better start every game until September when they bring Hardy back up. They might as well of just brought up Salome too. Kendall isn't working the staff well this year, our team ERA is horrible.
  24. I think if you wanted Bowden and Bucholz, a deal like McGehee and Hardy would be a good start. Lowell has one year left that pays him 12.5 million in 2010. Since you are taking 2 of their young pitchers I am sure they may want a pitching prospect in return.
  25. As I read through the boards, many people believe Gamel will be our starting 3B next year and Mcgehee will be riding the pine. While I do believe Mcgehee has proved himself as an everyday starter, I do agree gamel is our best interest. (Lefty power bats are a tough find) What I don't necissarily agree with is Mcgehee on the bench. While mcgehee has been a wonderful addition to our team, his value sits either as a starter or in a trade. Comparatively speaking, his value in a trade is greater than his value sitting on our bench. Imagine what we could do with a package of Mcgehee and Hardy. I would expect together we would be able to get a #1 or 2 starter. I do not have extensive knowledge of who needs a new left side of an infield but packaging an all star SS with someone coming off a 300 season, would have to garner some attention. And sometimes it would be our best interest to trade high. (Bill Hall, Corey Hart both had great years followed up by slumps) Will Mcgehee follow suit or will he hit 300 next year? If we did make a trade and got a legitimate #1-2 starter I think we would be setting our self for a huge run in 2010. Easier said, if we don't get another stud our pitching staff, what is going to make next year different than this year?
