  1. There is no amount of money in the world to make up for what he's going through right now. I can't imagine losing your 9 month old son. I can't imagine anyone really can until they have kids and lose one. I don't know how you come back and play a game after that. I don't know how you come back and function after that. But people are resilient. Hopefully this will propel him and drive him to do good things down the road. To be charitable. Either way, we're once again reminded that this is a game. A business and a game, but it still pales in comparison to what is important.
  2. And the Suns just did a sign and trade for Thomas from the Kings for over 7 million per year. Yet another undersized PG who scored 20 points per game last year. That's 5 PG's on their roster right now and they keep adding them. I would think the best chance to land Bledsoe right now is to offer the max and work out a deal with the Suns where an athletic big goes back to them. Perhaps even Henson. I think it'd be worth it. Bledsoe for Henson+1 of the Suns 5 1st round picks the next 2 years(add Udoh if they want another athletic big or Ersan if they want him).
  3. the brewers can only send wang to the minors on a rehab assignment after his 15 days on the disabled list are up (if he's healthy enough to start rehab). they cannot option him to the minors. i outlined the dates he is eligble to start and complete a minor league rehab assignment in a previous post. Yes, I think we all understand this. I didn't look at your dates, but the math should be pretty simple. They send him down for 15 days. If they so choose, they can then keep him in the minors for 30 days. The point is he didn't have to have 90 days of service time before the Brewers could put him on the DL. They could have put him on the DL(and had him pitch in the minors on a rehab stint) at any time.
  4. Your first two sentences completely contradict each other. I don't know where the conclusion comes from that the agents and MLBPA don't care "nothing," about guys like Segura comes from, and I think it's absurd. Obviously his agent cares. But as you said, JEAN could have locked himself into lifetime financial security. HE had that option, he chose not to. But he's 24 years old, and you think this might be just a tad dramatic that he's a hamstring injury, a back spasm, or 200 ground balls away from being out of baseball? It's also insanely early to say it was either good OR bad advice. Well, he'll have made over 1 million by the end of the year, and I would assume he'll easily make a few million more over the next 2-3 years even if his performance doesn't rebound...though I find it unlikely he won't. So I doubt he really regretting giving his poverty stricken parents 70K right now. This guy could sigh a deal tomorrow that would guarantee him at least 10 million dollars. Obviously his value has dropped a bit since this past off-season, but Melvin's not as reactionary as some. Segura's just fine. He's not the victim of any villainous agents or the MLBPA who's only concerned with the top 20 paid players in the game. He's still got all the tools and a very nice swing. He's pressing. That's it. And no, it's not because of a guy he probably has no clue about right now in A ball(no clue as in no clue how he's performing). Lets just put things in perspective. Alcides Escobar signed a 4 year 10.5 million dollar deal to buy out 2 arbitration years with two team options after hitting .252/.294/.339 with 9 HR's through his first 1300 PA's and 2 years of service time for just one comparable player.
  5. a rule 5 draft pick must be on the active roster for at least 90 days for a team to retain his rights. wang achieved that in early july. wang has no minor league options this year (unless a trade is worked out by the pirates). if he remains on the brewers 40-man through spring training 2015, he will have three minor league options. but as outlined above, the brewers can send wang to the minors on a 30-day rehab assignment after his fifteenth day on the disabled list. he would still be earning major league service time and major league pay, and the brewers would still retain his rights. Right, but this what Logan was referring to. They could have put him on the DL on opening day and not risked losing him. They could have put him on after 30-50 days or at any time prior to 90 days without risking losing him. The only difference is now they can put him on the DL and send him down to the minors and not concern themselves with putting him back on the 25 man roster the rest of the year while still controlling his rights next year(and for the following 9 years potentially).
  6. because jeffress is not currently on a 40-man roster, he is subject to discipline should he test positive for marijuana, and one more positive test would mean a lifetime ban. to his credit, he's been in the brewers' organization on a minor league contract for nearly three months and hasn't tested positive for marijuana during that time (to our knowledge). There are a litany of options to open up a 40 man spot on the roster should the Brewers feel the need one, and it seems like they could use a guy who throws 98 MPH out of the pen and is dominating AAA right now AND is a RH'ed reliever. And it doesn't matter if he's one positive test away from a lifetime ban if the Brewers either called him up or added him to the big league roster.
  7. You seem to go to the hyperbole well quite often when it comes to Marco Estrada. I can't speak for the rest of the posters on here, I simply saw a clear and obvious upgrade to our starting rotation and was eager to see it. You believe that some had a ridiculous lack of respect for Gallardo because we didn't believe(those who you were referencing) would net a significant prospect in return. Estrada has been good in short stretches for the Brewers, but is a replacement level pitcher. We had the top rated MLB ready pitcher in the minors available and many were hoping to see him replace the guy who'd given up nearly 30 HR's in half a season. That's not hatred that's pragmatism.
  8. I don't know how it could POSSIBLY be "too little, too late," when it's(hopefully) a significant upgrade and B-It's July and the Brewers are still in 1st place. And they need their BP to get a break and get healthy, but lets not overreact about how they need an elite reliever and they need it NOW. Their OF'ers can't stay on the field? Braun...Braun's had injuries. I wouldn't exactly call Gomez or Davis injury prone. Roenicke manipulating the lineup? Yeah, that's a significant part of his job description. The Reds have injuries to Homer Bailey, Phillips and Votto. The Cards have injuries to Wacha, Garcia, Molina among others. The Pirates have issues with their SP'ing, namely Cole just going back on the DL. So no, the Brewers aren't a perfectly constructed team, but they're looking just fine right now. I don't know how the suggestion could even be made that it's too late....momentum can change real quick in baseball.
  9. Because it's dishonest and unethical? I don't know about those two, but it's logical. This is Major League Baseball, and I don't believe that MLB follows the rule 5 guys closely and warns teams about anything. To my knowledge that was an invention in another thread that has never been proven as nobody that I know of has ever been reprimanded for something like this, particularly the Brewers who did this exact thing with the last rule 5 guy they kept on the roster.
  10. Well obviously they can't pay them 1 million a year when the rest of the DSL guys are making 12K, but I wonder if there is any room to maneuver in there.
  11. Well if you could see the future, yeah, I'd have been on board with signing Cruz as well. There are a lot of things you'd do differently. I wouldn't have included Michael Brantley in the trade for CC and would have included Angel Salome who they desperately wanted. I did NOT realize he had 18 HR's. He is also just 6 shy of his career high. And he's actually 4th in the NL and would be 15th in MLB overall, but still, better than I thought. Though playing in Philly can certainly help a guys HR numbers. He also doesn't rank in the top 50 in OPS. If he hit left handed, he'd be a lot more enticing. But he probably too expensive and too good to come in and get 10-15 PA's a week unless they're more worried about Braun's injuries.
  12. Yeah, the suggestion was mocked pretty heavily and my credibility was questioned and that the training staff would likely be fined for such a brazen act. I doubt anyone at MLB's offices will even notice. 15 days on the DL, give him the time alloted to rehab in the minors and he can come back up in September and sit on the bench and be a part of a hopefully good race for the division. Nelson meanwhile....he's got a tough game vs the Cards but I have every confidence he'll pitch well for us and be an upgrade the 2nd half.
  13. Those haven't been prolonged issues, they've been issues at times and overwhelming strengths at times. As such, you can only hope they collectively right the ship so to speak. And we don't have the option of calling up a top 40 prospect who's arguably the most MLB ready player in the minors at his position to fix either. We do have that option at pitcher. Little things can lift a team. The last series before the ASB vs the team that is chasing you in the standings who just suffered a huge loss and you bring up your top young arm. MAYBE that will do it. I'd still like to see Jeffress and Hermedia brought up. A big left handed bat who can play LF and RF and a power arm for the BP could help right now.
  14. You might want to edit the post so it's not in blue.
  15. This is getting just ridiculous. Everything that went right early is going wrong now. Still two innings to salvage this one at least.
  16. I agree, but after throwing 9 shutout innings his last time out, I still would have taken him out after 7 with a slew of lefties coming up and us having 3 good left handed relievers. And I've been saying he was our ace all year, just by a shade though, not much of a difference between he, Lohse, Yo and Peralta, except he and Peralta can be more dominant.
  17. [sarcasm]I threw 3 perfect innings in little league....then my Dad told me about it and totally ruined it![/sarcasm]
  18. I get wanting to get Garza another complete game, but having just pitched one, I'd be happy with 7 shutout and going with our lefties here.
  19. Yeah, as great as Lucroy is, Molina is a bigger part of their success IMO. He completely dominates the other teams running game. I think Luc is 3rd in the league in CS% and still 20 pct behind Molina. Or at least Luc was a weak or so ago. And he ALWAYS seems to come up with a big hit. The Cards aren't looking all that intimidating right now with Wacha, Garcia, Molina and others on the DL and some of their young arms not pitching quite as well as expected. Though....still pretty dangerous.
  20. Pretty nice matchup the rest of the way for Duke/Smith/K-Rod. In fact, I would even go with Duke next inning and then Smith in the 9th with all the lefties the Phillies have.
  21. I seem to remember the Dodgers talking to and acting normal around Beckett in the dugout from the footage. Didn't see Kershaw. And by the way, I think Kershaw's game should be considered a perfect game. It's not his fault Ramirez had a throwing error. I know it'll never change, but I do wonder how many times in MLB history has a pitcher not allowed a hit or walk but lost a perfect game due to an error.
  22. Block and Hamilton were talking about this on the radio the other day, and I have to agree with BLock. He's like "you know, I can understand the guys in the dugout not talking about it near the pitcher, not wanting to amp him up or whatever, but the idea that someone in a radio booth or message board or somewhere saying a word can influence the events on the field....that's just dumb" (Obviously paraphrasing, but that's the gist of what he said) And I agree with him. I know it's one of baseball's little 'isms'...but it's a stupid one. Couldn't agree more. I also think it's stupid to stay away from the pitcher during the game. I get not talking about it, but why change your normal routine 5-6 innings into the game?
  23. I really don't care about baseball edict, I'm happy as hell about this. Anything to weaken the Cards and their righteous indignation thrills me. [sarcasm]He's clearly the eternal optimist. I know it's tough given the fact that we're having such a terrible season, but he's trying his best![/sarcasm]
  24. I'm one of the biggest Scooter fans out there, but there is no way a platoon player should make the all star team as a starter... If even at all... I don't think he's saying Gennett should have been the starter, they're basically listing the next best choices. Gennett ranks 2nd in MLB in OPS among qualified players behind only Cano. Dee Gordon and Daniel Murphy made the team as reserves behind starter Chase Utley. So who's left? Walker? Gennett has a 2.1 WAR compared to a 1.4. Brandon Phillps has the 5th highest OPS behind Walker and the 3 actual All Star's and he's not only hurt, but his OPS is .701. Seems like Gennett is as good a choice as anyone should they need another 2nd basemen.
  25. I know, but so was Bell a couple years ago even before the draft and he ended up signing. I guess I was just hoping given the fact they offered a million to another kid, perhaps they could offer him a bonus closer to what he had expected. That perhaps there were at least conversations behind the scenes. What was his requirement by the way? What did he want to sign? I can't imagine he thought he was a high first round pick.
