  1. Works for me. And since they would only need 4 starters, they could bring Jeffress up or maybe even give Hermedia a shot. A big left handed bat who is having a nice season for the Sounds.
  2. Forgive my ignorance here, but are minor league salaries, Dominican league salaries set? Or could the Brewers give him 3,098,340 and then guarantee him a higher salary so that he ends up making up the difference over 3-4 years? I guess I would assume there are pretty strict limits on what you can play minor league players otherwise the entire bonus system and each teams allotment would be kind of pointless. But I'm just curious if there is any room to maneuver there?
  3. Pretty sure they aren't going to just DFA Estrada. They'll probably send down Wooten or Kintzler, and try to trade Estrada. I don't know what they will do, but I know I'd rather see them just let Estrada move on. Wooten has been alright(for the 6th guy in the pen) and Kintzler I still think is a guy we NEED to come through for us and perform closer to how he did last year. Maybe a month in AAA will get Kintzler really back on track and he will be able to get that 93-94 MPH sinker back and be able to locate it better.
  4. I would imagine so. He's 36 and is due 8 million this year and next. And the Phillies have a lot of solid OF prospects in their top 10. In fact, Sickels had 5-10 all OF'ers I believe. But just how much value does a right handed hitting OF'er have for us when we have to pay 8 million next year for him to backup Braun/Davis? I don't think he's a good option to be THEE backup for Gomez (though you could get by for a little while). I just think if the Brewers are going to add that type of salary, they're going to want to add it to area that's a bigger need(utility IF'er, reliever) and if Byrd is traded, there are likely other teams who would pursue him more aggressively. But just in terms of how he helps the Brewers, I think he'd be great. And if they believe Braun should get a day or two per week, maybe he is a better target. Pretty consistent ~.800 OPS guy the last few years.
  5. Pena throws in the upper 90's. Rarmirez throws in the low 90's. With Pena you can at least hold out hope that he becomes something special. With Ramirez it sounds like you'd be hoping he can be a good reliever/back of the rotation type starter.
  6. And now I'm really encouraged about Henderson. If you just add the 2013 Henderson to this BP, it's among the best in the league. That's a lot to ask for of course.
  7. I thought in that special FSN ran about baseball in the Dominican, Segura got a 70K signing bonus and gave it to his father...who got choked up at the time.
  8. Well I was never sold on Segura as the 950 OPS guy he was the first two months of last year, but I am sold completely on him being a .300/.340/.420 with solidly above average defense. He's still a young player. Maybe...he should play in the off-season. I thought he fell off so much because he hadn't had a break in a long time. But maybe playing in the winter helps him. Either way, I'm still convinced that he's a 3-4 WAR SS. I realize I may be in the minority here as he's currently been worth -.2 WAR, but I've seen a short swing, I've seen some patience, I've seen the power from him enough that I believe from 25-30 he's going to be a 15+ WAR player. And it'd take at least another half of a season of poor player for me to downgrade him in my mind. And it certainly looks like Arcia is legit. His age and his performance has been outstanding. I think he could be a guy who can play with Segura. Platooning at 2nd with Gennett, 3rd base, some SS and then taking over for Segura when Segura becomes a FA or close to one and we trade him.
  9. Especially when Wainwright is starting for the Cardinals. That's what makes it more insignificant to me. Wainwright is probably the toughest pitcher in the league for the Brewers to face right now beating out Kershaw because of our ability RH'ed dominated lineup. This whole staff could really use the extra days off from the ASB save for perhaps Garza who's dealing right now, but has a history of injury issues the last few years. But if they bring Nelson up now, I'm certainly not going to complain at this point!
  10. People seem to think this is the same Brewers team that had a 27 million dollar payroll as opposed to a 105 million dollar payroll with room to add. They could trade Gallardo and with Weeks gone, Lohse the following year, they could absolutely do it. I was against adding David Price in another theoretical discussion at 7 years and at 25 million dollars per year, but Hamels would be signed for 3 years after this one, not 7 more. However I still question how good this team really is and if it's worth it to give up Nelson for starters and then multiple other prospects.
  11. He's exciting, but there are quite a few guys I'd take over him. Tanaka and Abreu being the obvious choices. I certainly would rather have Polanco for the next 6 years, though this year Hamilton might...MIGHT have a bigger impact. Springer and Ventura from KC have also been pretty impressive as has Owings from AZ. If Hamilton can keep getting on base though, he really creates all kinda of problems. I think he might pop a bit more because of how incredible his speed is. I don't know how good of a SS he was, but with his speed, even if he was a plus defender at SS, his speed plays so well in CF that he's one of those rare guys who's defense might be even more valuable in CF than at SS.
  12. That's what I took out of it myself. And I hope we'll see what he does when he's healthy, and I'm sure we will. I just am not confident we'll see another season in which he plays 150+ games at an MVP type level.
  13. Where did I say I was putting a lot of stock into the fact that he had a clean inning last night? I said his fastball looked very good for a younger player. And position players seldom come into a close game and they almost never "breeze," through innings. He's given up 15 ER's in 3.2 IP this year and 4 ER's in the other 12 1/3 IP. So I think it's pretty disingenuous to try and compare that to Lyle Overbay coming in and pitching a third of an inning. All this though is entirely beside the point since my comment had to do with how his pitches looked, not the box score, an assumption you apparently made. His change up looked really good last night at times and his FB velocity was less than I would hope for, although he placed it well. Another assumption is that you will remain skeptical until a rule 5 draftee actually has a successful career. Johan Santana-5 straight years in the top 5 in Cy Young voting, a 2.90 ERA over roughly 1800 innings from ages 23 to 31 would seem to be a success. Josh Hamilton was a League MVP. I'd call that a win. Roberto Clemente? Bobby Bonilla? Jose Bautista? George Bell? I'd say there are examples of rule 5 picks working out just fine. Of course I'm not sure how any of those players or Cruz or Ford relate to Wang who is his own individual case. But dismissing the rule 5 draft entirely is like saying we might as well not draft anyone past the 5th round because very few of them work out.
  14. Well...I do as well, but I think there are a lot of people who get caught up a bit too much into his lack of power for 1B. I've liked Lucroy, but to me, he looks like a poor mans Molitor. A guy who could be a .300 hitter for several-several years. I'm just afraid that if he stays at catcher too long, it's really going to take it's toll on him. He's got good hands, a good arm. I'd really like to see them try him at 3rd base next spring training here and there and maybe think about the move the year or two after that. Maldy is a bit limited, but I do believe he could be an above average starting catcher, and Zarraga could be a nice backup. But...again, the Brewers are seldom proactive, so I doubt they do any more than give Luc the occasional starts at 1st base to keep his bat in the lineup.
  15. How easy would it be for a guy of his build to baloon up and be 310 or 320? I think he should be proud of his physique as well. Dude is built like a tank. I imagine it's taken a lot of work to keep his weight down and even drop some weight coming into this year. I do have to say, and this is a little off topic, he always annoyed the hell outta me with his "hold me back," type of confrontations. Those where he would start yelling only when there were guys there to hold him back, would never do anything. Kinda like stomping over to the Dodgers dugout. But I digress. One guy who would be impressive in here is Gomez. He's built. Rickie would as well as he's built like a big NFL RB, but he's not as cut up as he used to be.
  16. When you factor in that he's a kid that should be in A ball, they've been outstanding. His change looked really-really good last night. I'm not real encouraged by his FB velocity, but that very well could be the result of not pitching regularly and not really building up his arm strength (doubt it, but hopefully).
  17. But he didn't "technically," test positive, so he may very well not have been subjected to the additional testing. I do think at some point that players are going to be granted more waivers for testosterone boosters to help healing. Under a doctors care, they're perfectly healthy for an ADULT MALE. This isn't to defend Braun, he was cheating, and then what he did after that is what was so deplorable. But if you have the medicine to get guys back on the field and you open it up so that it can be monitored and allowed on a limited basis, I think you should. But after the era we're coming out of, we're probably a long way away from that.
  18. There was some mention on MLBTV about coaching metrics. Now I personally haven't paid very close attention to them, but basically what they said was that 95 percent of the time, the difference between the best manager and worst manager in the game is 2 games added or lost at most, and that they all do pretty much the same thing. It's really easy to pick apart your own manager because...well, nobody is patting Roenicke on the back when Lyle Overbay hits a grand slam, but when he comes up empty in big spots, he's an idiot for playing him. I think RR is a good manager, but he's been around for a while and learned with some of the best in the game....and he STILL started Kotsay in a game. Matheny is in his second year, went to the WS and made all the right moves last year. So from where I sit, I think he looks pretty good. But again, teams seldom appreciate their manager. Even if they just won a WS. Then it's, anyone could have won with that lineup.
  19. I don't agree. I don't think he's going to have any value after going to arbitration this off-season. After 500 innings in the big league, he's been worth 4.1 WAR, 3.1 of which came in one season. I don't think there is much of a chance the team even offers him arbitration. He's a clear non-tender candidate. Maybe it'd be better to hold onto him the rest of this year as our long reliever, though I do prefer Fiers, but I don't think teams are going to want to pay him 5-6 million next year, much less trade us anything for the right to do so.
  20. Not to mention Estrada's next start, or Nelson's first start would be vs the Cards and Wainwright. I don't want to sound like a defeatist, but we're probably not winning that start anyway. But for the love of God, at least sit Nelson down for a while so he doesn't keep pitching 7 inning every time out(even at 85 or so pitches).
  21. Maldonado is very expendable and replaceable. His playing time is starting to resemble that of Mike Rivera's when he backed up Kendall. If there is a team out there that's interested, they'll get something, but probably not much. And then when Lucroy finally is out for a couple weeks because he is like a magnet behind home plate we're looking to trade for an elite defensive catcher who can hit enough to play catcher. I've actually wanted the Brewers to see if Lucroy can play 3rd base or even 1st base and move him there in 2-3 years. He's too good of a hitter to have his career cut short by 4-5 years(or his production vastly reduced) by taking a beating behind the plate. As for if he can hit enough to play 1st base, I'm not a particular fan of this logic. If he can hit .300/.355/.425, that's just fine for me at 1st base. I don't care that isn't the exact type of bat you're looking for at 1st.
  22. I know this is a bit old, but how about Jeffress! He's been dominating.
  23. Look at the NFL mock drafts a year ahead of time and that's with guys who've been in college for 2 or 3 years already with another year coming. And those are incredibly fluid. With Baseball being so much more of an unknown, projecting where guys go a year ahead of time has got to be next to impossible.
  24. So is there still virtually no chance that Swartz signs? I saw they offered Larkin 1 million dollars. Where was Swartz expected to go? A million dollar bonus I would think would be appropriate for where he was ranked coming in. Or have they just totally given up? I've seen his comments, but am wondering if that's just MAYBE a bit of a ploy?
  25. I'd jump on that trade. Jungman is a safe bet to be a big league starter and start for 5-6 years, but I think he's going to be league average. Zarraga is putting up big numbers, but never played 74 games. Not exactly a top prospect. Haniger is a legit prospect and I'd even trade out Taylor here. And Magnifico and or Goforth are nice, but far from sure things. I would like this deal a LOT more if you got Kahnle back from the Rox than Hawkins. Hawkins is still getting it done, but he's got a ridiculously low K rate for a closer. 4.2 K's per 9 IP? I think the Rox could get more in return however.
