Fuller is on the last year of his deal, the 5th year option on his original rookie contract. He is, for the most part, a rental, although he would likely recoup a pick for the Packers depending on the size and type of deal he signs in the offseason. I would imagine he's the type that would garner a 4th round compensatory pick, so I would imagine the Packers could probably get him for a 4th rounder, while eating the rest of his deal this year. That would, in essence, mean that they would only be trading the Texans salary relief for him. I suppose it's possible the Packers may go as high as a 3rd round pick for him. Thanks! I'd think considering the 4th as a comp pick, the Texans would need them to go higher just to justify the trade. I guess there IS a difference between a late true 4th and a later comp pick, but barely. But would I trade a (presumably late) 3rd for the rest of the season of Fuller and a comp 4th? Absolutely. Wilde said on the radio today the Packers have offered a 4th for Fuller...but the Texans believe they'll get a 3rd for him. This is from Wilde. I have a hard time seeing Fuller getting a big deal after this season given his injury history, but he does have elite talent and upside...so maybe. I like all the guys they've been rumored to be after. Ertz would be awesome...but they have to fortify the front 7. Maybe not a MLB'er(I've seen Myles Jack rumors), but something on the DL. And with the Panthers losing to the Falcons, Curtis Samuel seems like a pretty ideal target. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but how reliable is Tyler Ervin? If he's as important as they've suggested and as important as it looks when watching this offense, then bring someone in who can play a comparable role. Samuel is a Deebo Samuels type player. Not quite a big, but elite speed and he's already used out of the backfield in Carolina.

I think this undervalues Beal by a lot. Beal I Smith for Bledsoe Wilson DDV 2020 1st (#24 from Pacers) 2021 1st I don't think adding Ish Smith makes the deal more likely for the Bucks. He's a nice player in his own right. Not an elite player, but a nice role player. Beal just fits so perfectly with the Bucks...but I have a really hard time seeing a trade work out between the two teams. MAYBE if they would try and work out a 3 team trade and be willing to part with Middleton. Maybe the Sixers are willing to trade for Midds, they send picks and players to the Wizards, the Bucks send DDV, their 1st(they don't own their 2021 1st)...then I guess maybe they could work something out. I almost wonder if the Bucks are better off signing whoever they can for the MLE as a FA which should be for ~4/40...a more enticing offer this year, provided you add an opt-out pretty early on...you might get a player who'd normally get much more, but with teams conserving cap space trying to go after Giannis next year, it'd be a one-year rental. But then waiting on any major trades unless you can convince a team like Sac to trade you Buddy for whatever few assets you have...or if you can really hit the HR and get Beal somehow. I just don't think it's likely. John Wall's probably more realistic than Beal...and I know that idea would go over about as well as a far in an elevator on this board.
-
Well damn...that's at least encouraging. That they're looking at some of these players to try and upgrade the roster. Hopefully, they continue to do so.

This is never happening. The Sixers give up Embiid and Simmons and end up with Westbrook and Covington? That's a terrible deal for them. Bucks make out like bandits. It's basically Bledsoe for Simmons. No way. Ilyasova at $7M doesn't really add value. Simmons isn't all that good as he can only score by driving to the basket and that is it. His jump shot is worse than Bledsoe's and probably on par with Giannis. Simmons hasn't shown any willingness to improve his jump shot at all. Westbrook is by far a better PG and makes the 76ers ar far better team. Covington while he is not Embiid is a really good center. He is also really cheap. The amount of cap space the 76ers gets should allow them to go after Giannis if he doesn't re-sign with the Bucks. The trade is also titled the Crazy never going to happen trade. Ok, Simmons doesn't have a good jump shot...but neither does Westbrook. Simmons is a better defender...can defend all 5 positions, a better passer, and almost 8 years younger. I don't think Simmons is a better player than Westbrook, but even if you argue he is, I don't see how he's nearly as valuable a player. It's kinda moot anyway as the Sixers said they're not trading either of their young stars though.

I would agree Washington should be tanking as well...I just would think they'd be able to get a lot more for one of the best SG's in the NBA.
-
I was fine with going for it the first time...but if you go for it at that time, you really should go for it the 2nd time. Sherman had to have gotten scared from that possession. Davenport was a load and a great short-yardage back...and Green was a big guy as well and one of the best backs the Packers have ever had. Sherman choked there. No question about it. As for Donatell, I didn't think he was a great DC, but he created pressure and he forced turnovers pretty consistently. And it's not like the defense lost you that game. That was definitely a sacrificial lamb.

Game 6: Packers @ Texans - Sunday, October 25th, Noon CT
HiAndTight replied to homer's topic in Other Sports
With everything they've got going on, one of the things I'd like to see again is the hang time. I thought that was a pretty important stat for a punter. -
It's definitely hyperbolic. It feels like it's relying too heavily on our trips out West last year and the beat down at the hands of the 49'ers. A bit part of that was the pressure they were able to put on us. Lets at least wait and see if Bahk and Jones and others will be back before waiving the white flag. It'll be a test though. All I can remember from that game was McGlinchey almost serving as a lead blocker and getting to the 2nd level EVER DAMN PLAY. I'd reiterate how frustrating it can be watching our DL take themselves out of plays with poor gap integrity and trying to get upfield which plays right into their hands, but I don't think Pettine is going to fix it and it's getting old. Just give this team Dom Capers and I think our Defense looks so much better. I cannot understand what Pettine's thought process is. Either way, it'll be a good matchup...even if they come into the game down ~10-12 starters.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2020-nfl-trade-deadline-75-potential-targets-available-players-position-by-position-breakdown/ Not sure this is a comprehensive list(or a complete one). A few interesting options; WR'er Seth Roberts is on here. Marvin Jones is a really interesting name. Another upcoming FA. He could be a legit #2 WR'er. Golden Tate Kenny Stills Josh Reynolds-Can't really see why the Rams would be trading a talented WR'er when they're in the race unless they like their depth...he's a big athletic target and they've got Woods and Kupp ahead of him, plus two very good TE's. John Ross Julio Jones and AJ Green seem totally unrealistic. MLB'er Zach Cunningham is listed. Really the only difference-maker on the list at LB'er. Though he's expensive, the Packers could simply trade him after this season since Houston will have eaten the guaranteed money or release him. Avery Williamson will probably be traded and I'd assume it'll be to the Steelers after losing Bush. He's a pretty solid 3 down LB'er. DL Sheldon Rankins-I don't know why the Saints would be looking to trade a good young DL who's one of the few guys without an enormous cap hit next year. Geno Atkins-Meh, bit cap hit, 32 years old. Not playing much for the Bengals. Not a good fit. Watt-Really can't see the Texans trading Watt, but I'd love to see him playing for the Packers. And they could actually extend him to lower his cap hit next year.... Malik Jackson-The Eagles would eat nearly 17 million in dead cap space by cutting him. Dalvin Tomlinson is a FA and would be a really nice fit in GB. I'd think the Giants would want to build around him, but if he's available, he's a nice target to help fix our Run D that IS still a problem. CB-Gilmore is on the list. The Pats just gave him more money(not extended, just gave it to him) so I kinda doubt he's traded. And not worth the resources it'd take to acquire him. Safety- Anthony Harris is a stud and there is zero chance the Vikings trade him to us and if they did, it'd likely cost us a 1st. Harrison Smith is also very good and I doubt Minnesota will trade him to us of all teams. Marcus Maye...again, a really good player and a URFA. Unless you plan on bringing Greg Williams with him, I'm not sure Pettine would use him all that effectively though. So a lot of head-scratchers on that list. It looks like they just took guys who have already demanded trades, good players on bad teams and then sprinkled in a few other guys. And then anyone who plays on the Jets because they're trading everyone not named Becton. Man...the Jets just have nothing going for them. They've got one of the worst head coaches I can recall from recent memory. He's Matt Millen bad in another job. But there are players in there who would be cheap and could fill the holes we do have. A physical WR'er, a big space eating DL and maybe a MLB'er, though I think that spot is starting to clean itself up with the return of Martin. And Kirksey is supposed to be back yet.

I don't know about that. The 49ers are going to be pushing a skeleton crew out there. Let's not play into the narrative that every team in the NFC West is infallible. They're obviously not infallible, but that's still going to be a tough game. Two days after the trade deadline. It's actually amazing how they just spanked the Pats. They've got arguably a more talented defense on IR than the Packers have shown this year and they're still playing well. Ford, Bosa, Thomas, Sherman, Ansah, Blair... They've still got some edge rushers though despite losing two elite ones in Ford and Bosa.
-
I'd say he played pretty damn well. He was excellent vs the run and he set up both sacks as he was the one pressuring Watson forcing him to step up...as he did on Za'Darius Smith's sack. Thank you for letting me know you're not my secretary. You seem to be getting pretty offended because I challenged the assertion that saying that he didn't play well using the last six games when he only got 2 sacks was a poor way to evaluate. If you extend that out a game each way, then in 8 games he has 6 sacks. You can play with those numbers to fit just about any narrative. You made an assertion based on a stat that you yourself concede is not a good way to gauge how effective an edge player has been. I would argue that the problem is far more Pettine than it is Smith. Oren Burks is now rushing the passer as an OLB'er while Preston Smith is dropping into coverage 3 or 4 times more often than he did in Washington and he did the same thing last year though to a slightly lesser degree. He's graded out VERY well vs the run throughout his career including last year(I believe he was ahead of Za'Darius Smith in that regard). His game vs the Texans was the exact type of game that shows you how big of an impact an edge player can have without filling up the stat sheet. We need more from him...I'm not suggesting we don't, but it may also help if he's put in a position to succeed a little bit more. He lined up over Tunsil, their best OL nearly the entire game, and still got a couple of pressures and made some big plays in the run game. This is a nice article about Smith. Touches on his struggles early in the year and I think makes a pretty strong case he played very well. https://cheeseheadtv.com/blog/preston-smith-makes-noise-down-in-houston-112

I'd really like them to make a move here if it is available. Lowry has been absolutely horrid, and Lancaster has been banged up though his play has been a bit better this year. They may like Keke and Adams, who both seem to be making strides this year, but I think one more d-line body would be very useful in fixing the broken run defense. The extension they gave to Dean Lowry was mystifying to me when they did it. It made sense to me at the time. I thought Lowry was just coming on...that has not been the case. He's awful. FYI, the Jets are reportedly looking for a 2nd round pick to move Williams. Now the Packers 2nd round pick may not entice them, but a 2nd+5th may be enough to get it done. I just believe that guy is going to be an All-Pro, especially if he's playing with good edge players and next to Kenny Clark. I really hope that's the priority. It's too early to say if Kamal Martin has fixed the MLB'er issues, but I thought he looked really good last year.

Not an exciting signing, but Roberts is a guy who had some solid years with the Raiders, primarily playing out of the slot. This very much reminds me of the Ryan Grant signing from last year. Roberts does fit the mold of the WRs the Packers typically like, though, at 6'2", 200 lbs. He's also a solid blocker. He's basically replacing Robert Foster as the veteran presence on the practice squad who can step in should there be another injury to the WR corps. I don't expect Roberts to play any sort of pivotal role in the offense, though. I don't think this signing is going to preclude them from continuing to look at the trade market to bring in another weapon, either. He's a nice signing. There has to be something with Foster. Maybe he can't pick up the playbook quickly or didn't earn Rodgers trust as a route runner, but he had the size, athletic ability, he'd looked good in limited playing times early in his career. To let him leave for another team's practice squad is a little confusing unless something's just not clicking. The Packers offense was a little troubling to me vs the Texans. Rodgers was throwing to Adams pretty much every play. And that works vs teams like the Texans, but they had little pre-snap motion and looked like they beat them just because they were more talented. Which we've seen, doesn't work against really good teams. I know Tyler Ervin will be back, but I think you have to have someone else who can do the same things he can. I've suggested John Ross...hopefully we can grab him. Otherwise, someone like Curtis Samuel who's now playing RB for the Panthers would be a nice target. Another guy with great speed and who's good if you can get the ball in his hands. 4.3 40, he's going to be an URFA this off-season and I can't imagine he's got a lot of use to the Panthers as they rebuild and they've got C-Mac coming back this week and Mike Davis has been very good this year.

This wasn't the play I was thinking of, but it's another one where he sheds a guard pretty easily and stuff Johnson inside the 5. https://youtu.be/7C0xtw4UQCI?t=187 It may have been the play where Jackson got the credit on a tackle for a loss of 1 on their first series(Though I thought that was Preston Smith). But these replays don't have each play. Either way, it was one of the better plays I've seen from a Packers MLB'er in a while in just coming in and filling and making a play in the backfield. Anyone can make a play after a gain of 4, but he hadn't played in a year and he was playing downhill and attacking. As for Dillon, he just needs more carries IMO. He didn't look like he was running with a lot of power. It looked like he wasn't running through tackles like you see in his College highlights. He was getting hit and didn't keep his legs moving. Tentative as you said. -

I don't actually think Dillon was ever supposed to take over for Jones. If they were looking for a back to take over Jones role, Gibson would have been a much better option. He's a more versatile back who is a natural receiver out of the backfield. I do think Dillon needs more than 5 carries to get going. He's a big back...those guys need to get into a rhythm. Sporadic carries isn't going to get him going. My guess is that they're trying to get rid of the "lead back" idea and hoping to go with multiple backs who can come in and play together. Like Freeman and Coleman in ATL or the stable of backs the 49'ers have had. I'd let Jones test the market before even thinking about offering him a deal. He's a great fit in Green Bay, but I don't think he's going to get paid like Cook and Kamara(at least I don't think he should be paid like either). -
They did the same thing with Za'Darius Smith, Amos and Turner. If you cut him after this year, you're taking an 8 million dollar cap hit to get rid of him. So you save 8 million dollars. If not for the change to the Cap, I don't think there'd be any doubt they'd keep him for another year, especially given how much edge players are getting. Maybe with Gary stepping up they go with Za'Darius and Gary. Though even in that scenario, I think you could pretty easily trade him. Robert Quinn signed for 5/70 and was 4 years older than Preston Smith when he signed that deal and for about twice the guaranteed money.
-
I don't agree. He was a WR that was good right away and had a very steady trajectory, became a really good player, and then tore his ACL, which was a much more devastating injury even that recently than it is now. Then there was the incident where someone got shot and died in his lap, which sent him to therapy and had a devastating effect mentally, and he continued getting hurt too. I think that anyone who clearly remembers 2003 and 2004 (fair if someone doesn't, it WAS 16 years ago) would hesitate to say Walker wasn't a special player before he got hurt. As far as him not being Jennings, Nelson or Adams, that is a pretty lofty standard. Those are 3 of like the top 8 WRs they've ever had. I also agree with whoever made the comment about the 03 team going to the Super Bowl. It certainly had that feel and by the playoffs was as good as anyone. Ahman Green was one of Wolf's last strokes of genius for the Packers. One of my favorite players they've ever had. I agree with you. Walker looked like he was on the verge of becoming the next great WR'er in the NFL. He had great size(6'3) elite speed(4.38), he could jump, he went up and got the ball at the high point...and he could win 50/50 balls...or 10/90 balls with Favre. Like in the Favre game when his Father died. It was Walker who caught those balls that he just threw up, one in triple coverage(he did drop in that ridiculous ball to Wesley Walls in the back of the endzone that's still one of the best throws I've seen to this day). But his luck was....just awful. He had that breakout year early on. Almost 1400 yards. Then he held out for a contract extension and Favre took some shots at him in public(which is always easy when you're one of the highest-paid players in the league). Then he had a bad knee injury early on, got dealt. Came back, had another 1000 yard season with the Broncos. It was that off-season that a teammate was shot in the head and died in his arms. The following year he suffered another knee injury...signed a massive deal with the Raiders, but at that point was never the same again. As for that 2003 playoff game...the Packers did look like a SB team that year. A dominant rushing attack, a very solid defense. They got the ball in OT, they'd run for 220 or however many yards and they come out and throw a ridiculous pick the first play of OT...that one hurt as bad as just about any loss since I've been a Packers fan.
-
Tannehill was the starter the entire season Sherman's last year there. He took over halfway through the season the year before from a pretty good College QB Jerrod Johnson who had 30 TD's and 8 INT's going into that season. So his last 3 years under Sherman he played QB for all but a few games and it's not like they were throwing some scrub out there. Sherman's the reason Tanehill ended up in Miami.
-
Mike Sherman went from HC and GM of the Green Bay Packers, to an NFL OC again, to a college coach at A&M, to a 4-18 high school coach and fired CFL coach. It can go downhill in a hurry once they figure out that you don't really know what you're doing. Damn...I just read the last paragraph of his bio. It looks ugly. Going from the Packers to A$M isn't that bad...especially if you're an alum. But then the CFL, then 4-18 as a High School coach? I didn't even think Sherman was a bad coach....he was just an awful GM(similar to O'Brien).
-
Garrett was a Cowboy so got a longer leash with Jerry and the fan base. MM was more of a typical JJ move, hire the big name to appease the fans when even doormats like Cleveland and the Jets passed on him. Jones really just needs turnover control to a real GM but I hope he doesn't. Philly in 1st place in the East at 2-4-1, having 4 team divisions may finally make the NFL look stupid this year. He was a Cowboy and he was "like a Son" to Jerry...and I don't think that was a throwaway line in his case. He DID seem particularly close to Garrett. Also Jason Garrett was 85-67 with the Cowboys and had just one losing season. He went 4-12 in 2015 and Tony Romo had them at 3-1 before he suffered a season-ending injury. So...Garrett was closer to Jerry, but he also did have some success with the Cowboys. This team is not playing for McCarthy. Maybe Aaron Rodgers deserves even more credit than we previously thought. If he kept the team playing hard and winning with THIS version of McCarthy?

Martin made an incredible play early in the game. Might have been the 1st or 2nd series, but he came in, blew up a guard and hit the back about 2-3 yards deep. I had to rewind that a couple of times as it was especially impressive. This was mostly just a game to survive without Bahk and Jones and Gary and others banged up... The only complaint, when we have games like we did last week and we point out that Rodgers throws it to Adams too much, this felt like an opportunity to get other guys involved. Obviously when Adams is wideopen..throw it to Adams, but there were several plays he had other guys open. That and they didn't put the game away as early as they could have. Those are the only two minor little "critiques" I'd have. Otherwise...they looked fine. Redmond and Jackson looked pretty good filling in for Savage and King. Sullivan looks like Kevin King with less athletic ability, more toughness and better anticipation. I don't know if he'll hold up outside, but he's been pretty damn good this year. -
No idea. Feel free to look them up and refute what I'm saying. But by sacks and by watching the game, he really tailed off the end of last year. He is owed a $4.5M roster bonus next year and they can save $8M on the cap by cutting him next year. He played better today, but if he doesn't crank it back up, it wouldn't surprise me if they cut him next year. The point...which you obviously know, is that using sacks over 6 games is an extremely flawed way of evaluating how well someone played. For instance, you said he played well today(and I agree, he did). And he had zero sacks. You're making the assertion that he "really tailed off." I'm saying I don't think the stat you're using is very effective in determining that.
-
Agreed. And for a Freshmen, he just didn't flinch at all. He was extremely calm and collected back there. Even on easy passes, QB's can rush it, but he just dropped it right in there. What's NOT to like at this point? Maybe Mertz opens the doors for young WR'ers and future generations of QB's. If the Badgers throw the ball more this year, it'll show that the team isn't dedicated to running the ball, rather using whatever talent they have. This certainly can't hurt in that regard anyway. I don't think you can overstate how big it would be for the program if Mertz goes on to be a Heisman candidate/top ten pick level player. We have been sort of stuck in #5-10 level program for a few years just can't get past OSU to the playoffs and QB IMO has been a big obstacle getting over that hump. Mertz being that good may put us on another level in recruiting as a 5 star player really can come here and be a star. Hard not to be excited about this team after last night but not sure how big a test that was. I think the comment on Coan being around #15 best in the country isn't far off, if he was healthy and had a good senior season I think he gets drafted. Tough break for him, unless the wheels come off for Mertz or he gets injured hard to see them giving Coan the job back when healthy. Maybe he gets a medical redshirt and grad transfers? Not even sure he needs to be that good. If he can help UW just become a truly balanced offense and show guys that if we have the QB and if we have the weapons, we'll make use of them, that might help us pick up a few more recruits at WR'er, CB, the positions we're usually not elite at. As for Coan, since this season doesn't count against his eligibility, he's still got another year left. I do kinda feel bad for Coan...but...I mean, 21-22 5TD's...Imma get over it! Imagine if Taylor had stuck around? Get the NCAA Rushing Record(from a fellow Badger as far as I'm concerned) and get UW into the playoffs with him and the Freshmen Phenom? C'mon Berger...we're all looking at you right now. Clean up whatever it is that needs cleaning...
-
Not at all. People definitely take Coan for granted now that we have Mertz, but he was a highly touted QB out of New York. A pretty damn big get when he signed. And he's performed very well for us. I could see a lot of very good Power 5 schools who'd want him to transfer...if he doesn't try and make a go of it in the NFL.

The defense owes the offense a big game. We need the Smith Brothers to keep Watson in the pocket, we need Dillon to pound the ball on the Texans and we need Lewis to help double whoever is blocking JJ as Bahk is also out. This is a really big game. JJ Watt and Mercilus are two pretty dangerous pass rushers(one slightly more so than the other) and with no King, no Savage...Watson could have a big game. The Texans had a hellacious schedule and a terrible HC to start the season...but I think they're much better than your typical 1-5 team. I don't have a great feeling about this one. I hope we can figure out someone else who can fill Tyler Ervin's role as well as I think he's out as well.
