  1. I think all transactions deserve to be in the MLB forum. But proposed or rumored are better for the current trade rumors forum
  2. homer, I just think Wood could be another Jose Hernandez-type player. In the bigs, maybe .240 with 25-40 hr depending on the year
  3. I should also mention that I spoke with Vinny Rottino for a few minutes before the game, and he's a very nice guy. He said he wasn't sure why they stopped catching him in AA, because he said he felt like he made some progress. We heard (in the media) that Melvin and co. wanted to see if he could catch early in the year, then rotate him around. However, Rottino seemed to think his role just kind of evolved as the year went on. Zuniga gets promoted, and he plays 3b. that's how it went
  4. our player in the stands reported his fastball clocked in at 86-91, with an average of around 88.
  5. I'll check out Hammond tomorrow, and I'll ask our guy in the stands to get some radar gun readings.
  6. Hart likely won't be better than Weeks or Fielder, but Hart does get overlooked. I was intrigued by him when he was in Rookie ball, but he kind of fell off of my list until this season. I was skeptical of him, yet he kept producing. My major concern now is that he appears to play a solid CF, but looks rather lost in the corner OFs. He really needs to improve defensively. If we wanted a no-field OF, we would have kept Magruder. Still, Hart could be an exciting player in a few years. His swing is extremely compact for his size.
  7. thought I'd add this. So when people envision Brandon Wood, what do they expect? I figured he'd be a well built guy...kind of like a Branyan. Well, I saw him and I couldn't believe it. He makes Krynzel and Hardy look like powerlifters, and the closest resemblence in terms of build is likely Craig Counsell. Of course, he swings as hard as it humanly possible, hence why he either hits homers or strikes outs.
  8. Mass, I saw Corey sitting in the corner of the locker room, having a good time w/his Fall League teammates. If he's hurt, it's probably something minor that's nagging. I know a number of guys in the league are being bothered by nagging injuries like groins, backs, etc. Hopefully he plays Friday, as the team's recent success seems to be at least partially attributed to his hot streak. Also, one problem with Wed and Sat is that they are Taxi Squad days, so the best players don't always play
  9. word has it that nobody is really certain why Fielder left. They don't think he, Hardy, and Eveland ever wanted to be there, so they all have now gotten their wishes. the report on Fielder wearing tennis shoes is true, but it's because he wears tennis shoes that have cleats in them, as opposed to normal baseball shoes. As for Eveland, his leaving left the team a bit short-staffed this week, especially w/the DH on Tuesday. All in all, sounds like the Crew tried to send guys who didn't want to be a part of this thing. Hardy had already been here twice, and the others were big leaguers. I'm not going to have these affect my opinions of either. It's been a long year for them. and guys like Hammond and Rottino are thriving in their place
  10. word from a non-Javelinas trainer (ie, from a different team) is that they thought Fielder didn't care. Apparently he played a game in tennis shoes. I wonder if he meant turf shoes, which could have been explained had he left them behind in his locker. But apparently he'd been talked about for his shoes on the team
  11. thanks for the table rluz. I think Lee's value depends on what the team is looking for. For instance, the Brewers need a slugger, preferably RH, and someone whose sole job is to drive in runs. next year's roster is interesting, as we could go a number of ways. I'll post all of my ideas in the trade forum.
  12. rluzinski, so you're saying that Weeks was worse than Spivey? Off the top of my head, there are about 4-5 wins in late June/early July when he almost single-handedly got us wins. Just as Lee, Branyan, and Clark carried us to many wins in April/May, Weeks hit several go ahead/game tying homers in about a 2 week stretch. It's one of those irregularities. His homers often were clutch, even though there is no such thing as clutchness. His homers happened to come at the right time. There's something to be said about when something occurs. For instance, looking at Jenkins' numbers in 2003 and '04, he typically did very little for the team offensively until August. This year, however, he turned it on around the all-star break. For the first time in several years he made a meaningful contribution to the team. However, stats like OPS and the others you cited don't take into account that his seasons those years became successful because of a handful of games after the team had practically given up. This year Geoff was huge for the team in the second half...as much (if not moreso) than Lee, Branyan, and Clark in the first half.
  13. He dominated AAA before he was called up. yeah, he sure dominated for about 3 weeks. Wow. Of course, going on that, Krynzel sure dominated in his first 3 weeks. Please, Fielder had a tremendous hot stretch which turned his season from so-so to very good. Hart did the same. However, it's hard to say Fielder's 3-4 week hot stretch is any indication that he a) dominated AAA or b) is 100% ready for the big leagues. It's also a stretch to say that Overbay is inferior. Sure Lyle was very pedestrian this season, especially in the 2nd half, but he's still solid. In 5 years it's likely Overbay will be far lower ranked at 1b/dh than Fielder, but I can't say Prince is better right now
  14. I would be interested in seeing some graphs that show the performance of the leftfielders in MLB. Not just the top 21 or so, but nearly all players who started in LF at least a few times this year. Perhaps listing LF as a team, so there are 30 different "LF" to compare. It would be interesting to see the spread/variance/deviation, so we could see how some good/bad players skew the rankings and league averages, especially in HR, RBI, OBP, slg, avg, OPS, 2b, etc. (Hint Hint)
  15. (although the Lee fans tend to forget that 30 year-old, low-OBP sluggers also carry some risk). gregmag, Lee is 29, and has OBP's his last several years of .344, .315, .362, .330, .363, and .327. While there's one really low OBP, seems to me he can be counted on for .325-.345.
  16. SoCal, two years ago Hendrickson was the best pitcher I saw in the league. I would have sent him and Adams to the league rather than Eveland and Wolf. I also would have been tempted to send Sarfate again.
  17. I'd happily give him around 2 years, $18 million. That's not really long term, but it would give us security through 2008.
  18. I'll look in the media guide tomorrow, but I think there's something like 10-20 guys who have played in the big leagues. Off the top of my head I can think of Breslow, Eveland, Hart, Fielder, Daigle, Josh Wilson, the other Florida SS, etc. Mass, I can't find it in the media guide. What I can find says that "the AFL team with most players with Major League experience: Mesa Solar Sox with 12." Team with least is Phoenix Desert Dogs with 4. That is as of Sept 23rd
  19. I'll try to find out more from their trainers when I see them. It was funny to see our guys hang around after BP to watch Prince. I've never seen guys stick around to watch the other team hit
  20. Escobar is now hitting .286 (8-for-26); his triple was his first extra-base hit; zero walks, six K's; teeny-tiny sample, but keeping his head well above water for an 18-year-old... Yes, that's somewhat true. This league has mostly AA pitchers, so it's a good sign. Although remember that the league average is around .300-.310. So t.286 is like carrying a .240 average in most leagues. Still, it's something to watch.
  21. when looking at Carlos' season, remember, his numbers were below his previous years in Chicago, and he also was adjusting to a new league, which favors pitchers much more than hitters
  22. Al, the Fall league has several purposes. For some it is a finishing school. For some it allows them to have a chance at success after a lost season due to injury. It can also be a last chance in a career. A chance to earn a 40 roster spot. etc etc. There's lots of different reasons for the league. Perhaps the best one is that it is American Winterball, for US minor leagues who might not want to go overseas or might ride the bench if they did. I'll look in the media guide tomorrow, but I think there's something like 10-20 guys who have played in the big leagues. Off the top of my head I can think of Breslow, Eveland, Hart, Fielder, Daigle, Josh Wilson, the other Florida SS, etc.
  23. brian, the league has made exceptions before. For instance, there's the Taxi squad, yet by the last week, the taxi squad will only exist on paper, as the pitchers/hitters will play more. The Brewers obviously felt that they were sending two exceptional A-ball players. Escobar is holding his own, while Hammond--a college draftee coming off a great year in which he reached A+--likely would have done fine
  24. come on Clancy, Lyle isn't a leftfielder by his own comments. Now, he hasn't said he can't play 3b or catcher, so maybe you could pencil him in there
  25. quite the game of ping-pong in my clubhouse today. It was a prospect slug-fest in doubles ping-pong, Arizona closer prospect (former first round pick) Casey Daigle and Dodgers slugging 3b Andy LaRoche vs Dbacks 2004 first rounder Stephen Drew and A's super-prospect Daric Barton. I'm not really sure who won, but it was hilarious watching them go at it for about 30 minutes.
