  1. depends on your opinion of the badgers
  2. good outing for Glover, now let's turn it over to Eveland for 2-3 innings, then the righties like Capellan, Davis, Santana, Wise, and turnbow
  3. cirillo, hasn't Geoff fared well off lefties this season, especially lately?
  4. this game is huge. With likely having 2 starts remaining from Davis, Glover, Ohka, and either Helling or Cappy, a huge key will be for us to take 1 of Glover's starts. Getting today's win out of the way would be nice, and it's fun to still mathematically be in it with a week to play. Of course, we also will need to score for Davis this week. And it'll be interesting to see if perhaps in one game, we go with a lineup featuring Hardy, Hall, Weeks, Fielder, Hart, and Cruz.
  5. Russell didn't play, but he's "the man comes around" by Johnny Cash. As a country fan, I appreciated it. In AZ, Kelly Stinnett has perhaps the best walkup song I've ever heard...tell me what you think...Toby Keith's "I'm not as good as I once was". Just hilarious
  6. could someone please shut this thread down. It's delving too deeply into an issue we all hate seeing discussed, because it's not baseball related.
  7. Looking at the bunk stat Range Factor (it has some merits, I would presume), Hall ranks around 15th in the league, given that you need to eliminate the outliers. Hardy lower At 2b, Spivey, Weeks, and Hall are all comparable, all rated towards the bottom. At 3b, our guys are rated very poorly. In order, they fall Helms, Hall, Branyan, Cirillo. Yet anyone who watches games knows their range is more likely in the order of Hall, Cirillo, Branyan, Helms. So I caution using defensive metrics to critique our players, because all teams do not play behind the same pitchers
  8. I looked up some numbers, and the Crew is 3rd in the NL in strikeouts as a pitching staff. Throw in that they have the most flyball oriented staff, and that doesn't aid the attempts for infielders. Our ratio is 0.99, only slightly ahead of the Nationals at 0.98 and far behind #14 (Giants) at 1.10 GO:FO
  9. Square is stating simple observation, and it's correct. Hardy glides to balls up the middle, in the hole, etc etc, making nearly every play. His soft hands turn bad hops into routine outs. He's almost always in the right place, his throws are almost always perfect, and he helps Rickie Weeks a great deal because whenever Rickie fields the ball near the bag with a runner on 1st, he flips the ball to JJ, not going to first like most 2nd basemen do. Also, two other factors. Our staff has to be among the most extreme flyball pitching staffs in the league. In theory, shouldn't this mean that Hall, Hardy, Weeks, Overbay, etc all have very poor range? The second is that we get a lot of strikeouts, meaning that's outs without our fielders touching the ball. Rluzinski, any stats to support my theories?
  10. TauPentaRei, the problem with not starting Ben on opening day is that you diminish your chance of winning that day. Throw in that you want to maximize his starts, and getting him out there ASAP is key. As for a "B" fastball, that's what most of his career strikeouts have come via, so I don't consider a legit 97 mph fastball anything but terrific. Also, as the seasons move on, it's largely luck that leads to who pitchers match up against. Keeping guys on 4 days rests is the priority rather than looking at matchups. Perhaps a matchup-based team would fare alright, however, simply having a dominant staff seems the likeliest way to have an increased probability of winning
  11. the article makes sense. What's also interesting is that Sheets is arguably our best bunter, so while he doesn't hit, he does move runners over for someone else to knock them in. Part of the problem is that Ben faced some difficult matchups this year. It always seemed like he faced another team's stud.
  12. Simply put, there is a reason I would suggest a leadoff walk is worse than a leadoff hit. It's because the pitcher likely exhibited some lack of command. You hate to see a pitcher come out of the dugout and walk the first guy on only 4 or 5 pitches. Think about it this way. When pitching to Barry Bonds, he gets himself out around 65-70% of the time. If more teams pitched to him, it's likely that would shrink to around 68-70% of the time. However, by throwing balls not near the plate, it's likely that the hitter will get themselves out at only a fraction of the rate. With a hit, a batter is earning his way on. It's important to pitch without worrying about walks, but excessively nibbling and missing leads to Obermueller-like statistics. just my thoughts as someone caught in the middle of the traditional vs SABR approaches
  13. it was really annoying. I was shocked Bill and Darren never showed the guy
  14. I hope Santos has thrown his last pitches as a brewer. His 43-pitch 8th inning at BOB last week was brutal to watch, even in a route.
  15. Machmeister, the OF speed has been an issue all year, as all 3 have substandard range for their positions. It's allowed many outs to become hits, especially since it's been well-documented that the OF's like playing "no-doubles" defense, basically conceding bloopers. Still, they've done a solid job this year. Jenkins and Lee get too many bad jumps on balls, and Jenks seems to break back or freeze on lots of bloopers, but they're doing a solid job. My only concern is the pitchers. It would have to be tough mentally knowing that you made a pitch that should have gotten a guy out, but instead that's a hit, which means it could be an ER.
  16. assuming the Crew currently has SS as a priority position on their squad, I'm not sure who they would replace him with. Scarborough? Braun (they aren't sending any A-ballers, I think, so he'd be elligible)? Crabbe? Heether? Rottino? Too bad they can't send Cruz to the league
  17. one thing to remember is that if Helms can go somewhere and hit 20-25 homers, .260+ avg, and play decent defense, then that puts him in the top tier of 3b in the game. It's a sorry position these days, and Helms in 2003 wasn't far from being elite
  18. Hart maybe, but not Magruder. We have 5 OFs now, and it's sad that our only one with decent range is Hart
  19. the Link Report has long been a favorite feature of mine. I was drawn to this site initially because of my interest in the minor leagues. Thanks Jim, I always appreciate it. You make it extremely easy for the rest of us to find out all we need on the players and teams, and it also gives us a location where we can share our ideas and thoughts, along with a few first-hand scouting reports
  20. great job for these guys. As was stated, this was no AAAA team, as most project as AA/AAA fodder.
  21. was once again there today. now I believe they're 9-2 in games I've been at. Not bad for the year
  22. great game tonight. Tons of brewers fans near us, so that was fun. 7-2 in games I've been at, Ohka tomorrow. Hopefully we see the all-righty lineup, and if features Helms AND Cirillo
  23. now 7-1 in games I've been at this year, with Cappy throwing 5 of them, I think
  24. It should read Brewerjamie15 comes through again and the Crew racks up a W. :-) 7-1 in games I've been at this year. And I'll be at all 3 in AZ this week, now that I'm back out here
  25. Bennett's coming off a very good season. Throw in that he's already been in the AFL, and it makes sense not to send him. I'd have sent Adams to try to redeem himself
