  1. Ok, fine, when all these guys are hurting, you HAVE to DL someone. Wow I kind of agree. Except that you have to figure that tomorrow we have Vizcaino, Ford (too bad), and Kieschnick available, and possibly Santos available for an inning. Then by Sat hopefully Kolb and Burba back
  2. from the Reds' TV announcers. Kolb unavailable till the weekend, Burba (left shoulder, cortisone shot today) unavailable till the weekend, and Vizcaino only available for a short outing after last night. Kinney should also be unavailable after Tues, so that leaves Hernandez (starting Sat), Bennett (in there), Kieschnick. I think that covers everyone.
  3. Just thought I'd note that it appears that Indy is up 9-0 in the top of the 4th, and Huntsville is tied 0-0 in the top of the 6th
  4. Obermueller with only 86 pitches and he's a decent hitter. I guess he's done a fine job with this lineup, so Ned wants to push him a bit farther. I would have been tempted to go to Brooks for the AB and the 7th, possibly 8th
  5. Gotta say I'm not sure what the Brewers saw (or didn't see) why they put Valentin on waivers. They said his defense wasn't up to par, but he's been doing his best Matheny and Blanco impersonations this series, blocking everything and getting in position to throw awefully quickly. Osik and Perez did a great job last year, but I'm just not seeing what management saw, unless they didn't like his attitude, work ethic, or game calling.
  6. There is NO reason why Craig Counsell should still be the starter at shortstop. Yost better come to his senses and let Hall play. Isn't Hall starting in 3 of the last 5 games a sign that Yost is making changes? I still think Counsell should play some...perhaps now it shifts to Hall and Counsell playing 3 days each, or maybe even Hall 4 of 6, rather than 5:1 for Counsell as it was initially. I still want Hall to rest some, but he's sure earned more chances. That was an absolute bomb, but I'm more impressed with his defense. I was one of the first to praise Hall's swing back in 2002, but the two areas of improvement that have most impressed me have been his eye at the plate (laying off of some tempting pitches lately) and his improved defense. Keep it up Billy!
  7. I like the guy, and I think he could succeed quite well in the bullpen I sure liked all those Quality Starts last year. He's doing fine today. If he is still struggling when Cappy comes back, I say let Wes go to AAA to try to get straightened out.
  8. I'm no scout, but it seems Pods is letting his front shoulder fly open on swings, hence why it seems he's weekly hitting soft fouls the other way. If he keeps the shoulder in tight, then he might hit those fair or at least on a line. Anyone else noticing what I mean?
  9. great stuff guys. I don't worry about breaking up the lefties, since Overbay is fine vs them and JEnkins has been clutch off them lately. On the whole, as a frequent critic of Jenkins, I've been very impressed with his approach this year. He's trying for contact much more (resulting in doubles and singles), and is being more selective. Could be a huge year for Geoff. Harang is someone I've liked since he came up with the A's. I seem to remember liking his stuff.
  10. I don't like to question Ned, but why have Durrington ahead of Grieve? Interesting scrappy lineup though
  11. watch what you say around here Jode. You might have around 10 hitler youths ganging up on you for making a joke about the high priest of this website. Let's not get into name calling here. I enjoy most sarcasm here, but I am baffled (if not offended) by your comment, presumably about Massbrew. Not one regular here talks about the creators and managers of this site as being restricting, yet your choice of words makes it sound as though they are totalitarian rulers who ridicule all who think differently. If you were poking fun, I apologize, but I for one am greatful each day to wake up and find all of our minor league information neatly bundled together by Massbrew and the others. While we all get in disputes on here, and we often have favorite targets for our quips, I tend to think it is polite to differentiate between joking with eachother and making it sound like we're being restricted by the always helpful staff. Now that I've said that, I'm fully expecting Kat to mention Squarepusher's constant attempts to oppress him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  12. According to your view, nearly every manager in baseball abuses there pitchers. Thanks Danzig...great informative post. Shocking to say the least. To think that guys with major arm injuries in their pasts (Schilling, Wood), youngsters (Vasquez, Miller, and Penny), and old guys (Clemens, Schilling...again) are throwing that many pitches shows that nobody has any idea what is best for pitchers. I still stand by the idea that in some games, some pitchers have more in their tanks, too. So Sheets threw a few more pitches....so what? He's got plenty of chances to go on extra rest soon. Some nights 120 is a reasonable, some nights 85 is reasonable. There is no magic number.
  13. so...send sheets back out for the 6th???? I'd keep him out there for one more inning, because he's going to come back on 5 days rest rather than 4 days rest. 120 pitches isn't all that bad.
  14. Statement of the week. It has been fun all season long... lots of nice surprises, a couple of good stories, more hope on the near horizon. I don't expect it to last much longer, but damn! It sure is kind of fun to watch decent ball for the first time in a long time. What I love is that each time we fall below .500, we rebound and jump a few games above. It's like golf...it's sure a lot easier to golf while below par, because you know you can afford to screw up.
  15. well, back to .500, with Sheets going tomorrow. I feel somewhat good about our chances
  16. Why Hall for Spivey and not Hall for Counsell?
  17. Wow, Moeller sure is slow! Edit: Also, how is this possible. I see Davis threw 109 pitches, 71 for strikes. Yet it seemed he fell behind every batter, walked one, and went to a lot of two ball counts. Yet somehow he only threw 38 balls?
  18. The Pirates have only hit singles.
  19. If only Kinney's pitches moved like Vogelsong's, and if only he could hit his spots....then yes, he could succeed against us
  20. If you think the Brewers are 1 pitcher away from contending then you don't appreciate the sorry status of the talent that the Brewers call a pitching staff. There's no reason sacrificing the future to make a poor run at 0.500. We're at .500 and we're 2.5 back. To me it's not about making a "poor run at .500" when it can be about being above .500. With Sheets, Capuano, Hendrickson, and Davis, it would give us 4 at least adequate pitchers (although Davis isn't much better than that). But right now we are losing games because of our pitching. We could have 2 of 3 more wins if not for Kinney, Obermueller, and--to a lesser extent--Davis. Plus, I never said we were one pitcher away from contending. We're one or two pitchers away from stabilizing our staff. If our offense keeps performing against solid teams, then is it really wasteful to stabilize the rotation? We need two starting pitchers now, and getting one is a start. Hendrickson is dominating AAA thus far, he was (from my perspective after witnessing a bunch of Fall League games) far and away the most dominant pitcher in the Fall League, and he's done very well at every level in the minor leagues. The jump from AAA to the big leagues isn't all that big.
  21. Putting the arby clock issue aside, would you be in favor of just throwing caution to the wind and go with a rotation of Sheets, Davis, Hendrickson, Seanz and Capuano? Scoop, we've been agreeing a lot lately it seems. Like I said earlier, let's forget waiting till June 1st for Hendrickson (as I've advocated for a long time), because we may not be at .500 then. If we choose to wait, then we might be so far out on June 1st that we'll be forced to say "well, why start their arby clocks now, why not just give them a brief callup in Sept?". My one suggestion is that if we are tapping into AA for a starter, that we go with Matt Ford before Saenz. Then again, Davis has struggled too, so perhaps there's room for a Sheets-Cappy-Ford-Hendrickson-Saenz rotation afterall. Still, before raiding AA I'd advocate giving some starts to Kieschnick, Burba, Ben Ford (1 start at least), and Liriano.
  22. Peavey, Cappy was supposed to pitch yesterday but was scratched after not passing all his agility tests on Friday. I'm praying he gets back ASAP
  23. What's the deal with Adams being used longer and longer in games? I've been wondering that, too. Jason Childers closed last year and is still doing so. Adams was converted to a starter for a while last year, so this might be an effort to see how he does against AAA hitters 2 or 3 times through the order
  24. Gotta say I don't like the fact we've used almost our entire pen. Just Santos, Hernandez, and Bennett left. Come on boys, win it in the 9th here
  25. I now understand why Ned didn't start the hot Overbay. Ned is a prophet, and knew that he would need Overbay for just that hit.
