  1. Can someone explain to me why Schroeder was saying that Jenkins point of contact was perfect because it was back by his body? My best attempt would be to say that Bill's saying he liked how Geoff waited back. Typically, front-foot hitters tend to strikeout more and weakly hit balls, since they are off balance on breaking pitches and forced to guess a lot. They are forced to guess, and when they guess fastball and see something offspeed, they often weakly ground out, pop up, or strikeout. Hitters who wait back (back foot hitters) are able to react better (like Bonds, or McGwire). It allows them to be tardy on a pitch, yet drive it the other way. It also allows them to really turn on a pitch. That's my best possible interpretation of his explanation
  2. I'm starting to think service time be damned, Hendrickson will be looking at a callup really soon. We can't keep having these games where our starters are not getting out of the 4th inning. Our bullpen is going to be gassed by July at this rate. RoCo, I have been very open in saying that Hendrickson should be given till at least late May in AAA, but I agree with you here. Here's my simple reason. We're above .500 at the moment, possibly about to be .500 entering tomorrow. I'd rather bring Ben up now, because if we wait till June 1st, we might be below .500. The Brewers need to do everything they can to stay above .500 at this point, and buying the kid some time in AAA definitely does not help us out. Question though...do you send Obermueller to AAA to get things righted, put him in the pen, or keep him in the rotation? I figure since he possibly has a future with the club, we send him down to find himself, whereas once Capuano is back I say we release Kinney. Edit: also, I was wondering if anyone else has begun thinking the idea of letting Kieschnick try starting once or twice is a good idea? I figure if you have one starting spot occupied by the pen (Kieschnick for 4-5 innings and 2 good at bats), Burba for 2-3 innings, then Vizcaino and Kolb, we could do fine. It'd only work if you had them starting the game before Sheets to allow for them to bounce back and be available 2 days later
  3. Gotta say, I'm starting to hold Eveland to a higher standard--call it the "Parra standard." What I mean is that I see he threw 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs--which is very good--and I look at those walks and say "well, that's not his best effort." Gotta love having pitchers so talented that today's boxscore leaves us disappointed by that line.
  4. I don't agree with the announcers, as I think that was a sure hit. But for anything more than 1 run to score is sad
  5. I don't get why Overbay doesn't start. He's heating up, has had lots of days off (thanks to the schedule), and he needs to show if he can handle lefties. At the same time, Helms is the kind who could use one or two days off now to regroup. Of course, I tend to think the bench should be used for that and for letting backups and tweener prospects earn their playing time, so I might be in the minority in thinking Overbay should start tonight.
  6. I thought I read that insurance companies are requiring too expensive a premium for pitchers, especially contracts over 3 years. Hence why supposedly there are fewer free agents getting contracts that long (although I think it's more talent based)
  7. Is he worth a 5 year 25 million deal? Yes, but why would he take that unless there's tons of incentives? Gotta figure with Ben's stuff, workhorse history, and age, he'll be worth around $6-8 million a year. I'd love a 5 year deal w/incentives though, much like Jenkins'
  8. the bullpen needs some work. Hernandez and Ford aren't getting it done, so why not try some different AAA relievers? Matt Wise and Chris Michalek would work. I also would add the Childers' boys and Adams to the list. I know Jason hasn't gotten much--if any hype--but I'm pretty sure Doug Jones didn't either. I would assume that the soft-tosser succeeds on pounding the zone and making hitters put HIS pitches into play. I believe Adams is on the 40-man roster, so I'd probably try him and Michalek, with Adrian Hernandez and Ford being optioned (if they have any left). The real problem is Kinney. I guess we need to get Capuano out there ASAP. Then we can demote Kinney to the pen (with Kinney, Kieschnick, or Burba getting the 5th starter duties when needed). If nothing is working, then by late May/early June we can call up Ben Hendrickson and his sub-1.00 WHIP where he probably will instantly be our number 3 starter, possibly #2. The real problem would be if Davis and Obermueller also continue struggling.
  9. Darren and Bill are right about questioning not pinch hitting Ginter or Clark for Durrington. Right now Hall up, and I don't like the matchup vs Wagner. He's filthy, and while he might do well, I like Counsell or Ginter more to have a chance of hitting the breaking ball EDIT: I am sorry for doubting you Mr. Hall. You are the man
  10. While watching the late innings, I am once again reminded of a thought I've had before...why not let Kieschnick have a few starts to try to be a 5 inning starter. He has the kind of movement where he might get more sink as the game goes on and his velocity dips a bit. It would also be nice to see him get 2-3 at bats in some games. I don't know how good he'd be, but I'm getting sick of seeing Kinney's starts wear down our bullpen (also, Davis' haven't been that good, too). Thank goodness for the days off. I just hope Ben Hendrickson is at 100%, because he'll probably be needed by mid-May rather than the allstar break like I'd thought all along.
  11. I am not so sure they bumped Hendrickson, as he may have started on Thursday.
  12. Since I have been ripped(perhaps too strong of a word) for being down on Gwynn, it is nice to know his own dad thinks he has major flaws in his swing. I read it as his dad saying his swing flaws were simple. Many major leaguers try to hit off their front foot. Great hitters, like Bonds and Gwynn, hit off their back foot
  13. It sure is frustrating the way Edmonds goes after balls. Here I think Clark tags one (and Jenkins earlier), then we see the ball flying out towards the fence, but it's kind of frustrating to see Edmonds trotting after it. Almost demoralizing, because the excitement instantly goes away.
  14. I think I would have had Ben bunt. We had some trucks on 2nd and 3rd, so the run probably wouldn't have scored, but with the bunt it would have been nearly impossible to get the DP. Still, Sheets looks far more comfortable at the plate than he has in past years. Some day he might actually develop into a .200 hitter.
  15. So 89 pitches through 6 for Ben, but I believe he threw 29 in the first. 60 pitches in the last 4 innings is amazing, and it's the second straight outing he's done that. Also, Ben's showing something rare today. It's something that Ueck and Powell touched on yesterday when they said few pitchers these days get stronger as the game goes on. I think today Ben has been much stronger....locating better, mixing pitches better, and throwing harder. I think it almost appears he's mixing the 2 seamer back in, because I've seen 3 distinct different speeds today....83 mph (curve and change...would be nice if they were a bit different), 91-93, and 96-97. Pretty good for someone who typically goes 4 seamer or 2 seamer, but not both. I like what I see
  16. According to Drew Olson, RHP Victor Santos is already "on the premises". The question is, do they activate him now? Mass, I would expect today will be the key. If Ben has a good outing, then the bullpen will be very well rested for Tuesday, and so we won't need Santos.
  17. Toby, fate really stepped in Ben's way in this instance. Saenz was rested, Ben was not. Little doubt Hendrickson would have received the call otherwise. Also, I think Saenz was the short-term idea. Had they felt a starter was needed for several games, then it would have been Ben. But this time the need was for someone who could soak up innings as a starter or reliever (had Kinney been shelled). Add to that the fact that Hendrickson should be up by July to stay, I would think they felt he'd benefit more from the time in AAA while Saenz would come up for 1 or two starts and be sent right back to further his development.
  18. I wonder if this will have any influence on Chris' power 50 slot? Are there any precedents where a player's major league performance has influenced his Power 50 standing? I ask, seeing as it is mainly prospects on it.
  19. I think the general idea with Saenz was that he's on the 40 man, is comfortable relieving and starting, throws hard (missing lots of bats in AA), and probably would understand being called up for only a few days and not be too disappointed when sent back down. But he could really take off after returning to AA. Great to see kids seizing their opportunities, just gotta hope that Davis, Obermueller, and Kinney can build on recent solid/good outings and turn the corner too.
  20. ought to be a fun day for the minors as all of these pitchers are either getting results or are considered prospects
  21. I'm with Mass...please tell us what you see. It's not on MLB Extra Innings unfortunately, and with the minor leaguers we often hear varying reports as to what pitches they throw (like we heard Neugy had a slider, a curve, and a slurve from various sources). Does he show a changeup?
  22. Gotta say I agree there RoCo. I figure 6-7 innings or 115 pitches, whichever comes first. Although if we're hitting, and it's like 7-7 early on, I could see us letting our most rested pitcher (Brooks) try to go out there for a 60 pitch outing. With his movement and his bat, I still think he'd be a solid option as an emergency starter at times. Also, I guess I might have expected the Brewers to call up Ford over Saenz, because he's been in the bigs before. At the same time, Saenz sure has been dominant. Either would have made sense over Hendrickson, because we want him to have a good 2-3 healthy months of dominating AAA before we bring him up. When he comes up, it's to stay up here. calling someone up from AA usually tells everyone it's temporary
  23. just to clarify, but I wasn't seeking to bash Hart or anything. I was simply seeking to explain why I typically haven't ranked him as highly as others. My reason for saying so was simple...someone said there are people who aren't as optimistic about Hart as he was, and I thought I'd give my reasons. What excites me about Corey Hart is his rare combination of speed, power, and batting average. I have obvious concerns, but I don't worry about those too much. I figure he'll hit some more homers as he fills out. But I was just stating that while he was MVP, his numbers don't jump off the pages like Fielder's do. I think Corey should not see big league time this year, because I feel he's farther away that people think. I'm basing that on his huge strikezone, learning of a new position, and youth. Of course, I think he could be in the big leagues this year, but I'd rather see him slowly brought along. Perhaps some sort of a 2005 platoon where Pods, Krynzel and Hart split time could be of benefit. I think back to Jenkins' first full year, and he sure was fun to watch. I think part of it had to do with the lack of pressure of being an everyday player, but rather knowing that he and Ochoa were working together as teammates and were in the same boat. I'm just not always a fan of breaking in youngsters by handing them starting jobs for 150 games
  24. My questions with Hart basically stem from him never really dominating a level. He won the MVP, but had two teammates who would have beaten him had they not slumped in August. Corey's very steady. He finally has a position. He's showing more power, and he's hitting for average. Basically he won the MVP without hitting lots of homers and without hitting .350. Even then it was without a position.
  25. hey Mass, just wondering if we'd heard anything about why Neugy was scratched and when he'll throw again
