  1. Part of the benefit of accumulating talent is that you can deal some of it if needed. We can't keep everyone (Rule 5 and minor league free agency), so there comes a point where minor leaguers can be turned into big league talent. We have so much minor league talent now that we could afford a trade or two if needed, without being short-sighted
  2. Toby, maybe Prince is following the plan. First pound the zone. Then learn to be more precise within the zone. Doesn't help trying to be cute if you can't throw a strike to start with
  3. Interesting not a huge fan of the pick, but the fact that we're supposedly cutting deals is news to me. http://www.scout.com/mlb/scouting/story/1779690-ward-mock-draft-3-0 EXCEPT: Why is Tristan Beck eligible for the draft after his Soph year? I thought the rule was 3 yrs in school? Also, why aren't there more juniors who are drafted? It seems like most of the college guys are "4yr senior sign" guys. TIA. Is Beck 21? college players become draft eligible if 21 by the draft. Sometimes scouts don't adequately scout these guys
  4. In 2011, when the Cards knocked us out of the playoffs, they won while pulling their starter quite often before the 5th inning. A rotation needs to be good enough to make the playoffs, but then a pen can take over
  5. 2 outstanding additions to our pen in the 2nd half would be Woodruff and Hader. No trade necessary
  6. Thurston, I think that's right. But I'd rather give a kid 75 games to work on things than 25-30 starts. It's different for every kid, but we always could tell Wily didn't attack hitters despite great stuff
  7. I still like Wily. I wish they had broken him in via the pen. I've long wanted to break in more pitchers via the pen to give them success and learn to attack hitters. Wily has always struggled with off-speed consistency (although it's far better thus far in 2017), and the pen would allow him to really learn the nuances of retiring big leaguers. I hate to give the Cards any credit, but they've turned middling prospects into legit starters with this as part of their method.
  8. at this point I would say Jimmy Nelson has exceeded his ceiling when drafted. He wasn't good in the low minors, and didn't profile as a 2-3 pitcher, but he's really shown progress. I still prefer taking hitters early then loading up with pitching, but then again I'd hate to miss on another Ben Sheets. God he was so fun to watch once he scrapped the 2-seamer
  9. Gene, I agree. Wilkerson should already be in AAA.
  10. Jack Z also focused on hitters early, with great success. As much as I love the temptation of a pitcher in round 1, it really makes the most sense to load up on hitters. They can always be traded for pitching. Or with enough young hitters, you can always sign pitching
  11. Given our depth, we could take fringe guys that need to be protected for the rule 5 draft and bundle a couple of them. Think of guys in the mold of Wilkerson, Taylor, Cooper, etc
  12. Kodi with another good outing tarnished by a few pitches. In this case, a rough last inning including leaving inherited runners for his reliever. He's making progress and harnessing his stuff. Great outing as usual for Yamamoto.
  13. just thought of another one. The Brewers always seem to come to San Diego during April/May on school nights. I'd love to go hang out in the Gas Lamp District and take in a game at Petco, but I can't do it without burning valuable vacation days. I do try to get to the games here in Phx though
  14. I used to carry a sony radio and some sony stereo speakers (didn't need batteries) back around 2004. But they never could be heard more than about 10 feet away. I love golf, enjoy riding and walking, and enjoy some music if the vibe is right, but I shouldn't have to hear another group's music. My frustration with golf these days is that golf courses are now accepting 4:30-5 hour rounds. I remember as a kid getting told that if we didn't play in 4:04 or so, we would get warnings.
  15. Wily has looked much better this year. His velocity is up. His slider is sharp. He's throwing a curve. Really, he's had some outstanding starts and a couple that were a pitch or two from being good. I don't want him dropped from the rotation.
  16. Their young studs remind me of Wilson, Pulsipher, and Isringhausen
  17. He had a problem with frequent injuries--wasn't he plagued by a bad groin muscle? That likely affected his mechanics and altered his delivery as well.
  18. not a common surgery. Didn't D'Amico have that surgery?
  19. AKCheesehead. I call it the Russell Crowe effect. In movies he's always pretty much whispering.
  20. Weird, I saw his stats and was thrilled with the great outing.
  21. I'd still love to see them dabble with Janis at CB and special teams ace, like Bush a few years ago. His speed, tackling ability, fearless play, and inconsistent route running might actually have a chance then.
  22. I see Lopez as the first true prospect pitcher callup, ahead of Woodruff and Vader.
  23. I'm much higher on Shaw than MrTPlush as well. Love his natural lefty power
  24. Another perfect day (#3?) for the system
  25. I have an early flight, but thought I'd point out a comparison: Thames 633AB 21HR .250/.296/.727 J Bautista 1754AB 59HR .238 (don't have time to calculate) That's comparing Thames before breakout year with Bautista before breakout year. Sometimes guys need time.
