  1. Gordon looks like a rookie on the basepaths. Nice pickoff, though.
  2. Quite the start the Brewers young pitchers are off to, they've got their own little Fab 5 going with Jungmann, Thornburg, Bradley, Peralta and Nelson. It's early, but exciting to see a bunch of top pick pitchers at all levels performing up to standards. Gives the FO something to think about with free agency.
  3. I have to agree that Halton belongs in the top-30. Power and patience are what has held him back, but he is showing improvement, no doubt. I don't know how good his glove is, but he kind of sounds like Overbay lite to me. Of course, Big O can really pick it at 1B, which is part of what made him valuable. That and he's a doubles CHAMP.
  4. I'm listening to the broadcast and was coming here to post that exact same thing. On the stadium gun he's hit 97 twice and 98 once, Alex asked the Barons media director between innings how accurate the stadium gun was and the reply, "it's accurate within 1 MPH and is more accurate the faster the pitch". So it's safe to assume he was hitting at least 97 mph today. Very nice.
  5. I was just about to post this! Apparently Huntsville's gun is a tick or 2 fast, but even still, 96-97 mph fastball out of Thornburg is pretty exciting. Hopefully as his stamina builds he can maintain that type of velocity throughout 6 or 7+ innings.
  6. That essentially sums up my thoughts, this will handcuff them in free agency down the road, like the Cubs without any salary flexibility. Can a new TV deal even give them that much room?
  7. Chalk up an RBI for ol' Gam Gam! Triple the old fashioned way!
  8. And elsewhere in baseball, Yu Darvish is getting torched by the Mighty Mariners. 4-0 Seattle heading to the bottom of the 1st
  9. nice call if it works, that had nightmare written all over it. It was a gutsy call on Marcum's first AB, but as they say, the best pitch to hit usually the first one. Against the pitcher too, chances had to be good he'd be throwing a strike there. Great play by Marcum to make it pay off.
  10. Yeah, hasn't really looked too bad besides those 2 pitches. How about Gonzalez getting the bat going?
  11. Eh, he's a flyball pitcher. As long as he keeps em as solo shots, they won't hurt too bad. Especially on a windy day in Wrigley.
  12. Homer Bailey...can't say I'm shocked. Funny thing is Dusty Baker will probably be blamed for him never panning out.
  13. Buster Olney is an AL East beat writer disguised with the title of "Baseball Analyst". I don't think he could name a player on the Padres if you asked him point blank.
  14. Hopefully that changeup is really working for Marcum today, otherwise lefties are going to gear up and let er rip. It's days like this I'll really miss Prince. Probably could hit one out of Wrigley today.
  15. Maddox is still there, having an alright season, slugging under .400 though. Zunino is slugging .700 in 28 games. College, but still, I see why he has so much helium lately. Good defensive catcher who is killing the ball.
  16. Can't blame Florida management for that when Zunino is projected to go as high as #3, lol. McMahan really raked though in the Pioneer League, as college players should. Will have to see his build, crazy that a catcher would move to the OF, though he probably has a good arm for it.
  17. Player of the Year: Weeks Pitcher of the Year: Gallardo Rookie of the Year: Does Gamel count? If not, I'll say Fiers Contract Extension: Greinke First moved: I'll get a little controversial with this one...Morgan 1st place in the NL Central 91-71 Cardinals and Reds not too far behind, but the Cards' age starts to show with injuries and production, and Reds can't scrape up enough good pitching to get it done with solid but not great years from Latos and Cueto.
  18. I actually think we may have seen Lawrie called up, but not because of McGehee's struggles; because of Week's injury. If Lawrie stayed with the Brewers, he's probably still at 2B or dabbling somewhere in the OF. From what I remember, there was no plan to move him to 3B, though that could have changed following Week's extension. Interesting to think about.
  19. Yet all these experts insist that the sample sitting around won't affect it. Then why the language? Why even bother with that extra information in the procedure? I just don't see how anyone can say "this or that is absolutely true because science says so" when they don't even have all the details available at their disposal. This is an example of how the media makes a story out of assumptions and rumors.
  20. Here comes my goofy reply of the night, because while I agree defense is underrated, I also believe it's overrated as well. Case in point: if we want to use an advanced metric like UZR/150, the Brewers were 12th best in the MLB. If we use regular old fielding %, they were 22nd. If we want to use both those measurements for the Cardinals, who are currently in the World Series, as a team they are the 4th worst in baseball in each category, and bottom 5 or 10 in several others. If we want to look at pitching, the Brewers' staff was better than the Cards as well in just about every category. So what's the point? At the end of the day, I think if there's one part of offense, pitching, and defense that can be hidden, it's defense. The Brewers 96 wins this season should demonstrate that well. Now that doesn't mean defense isn't important, I think we'd all prefer at least an average defensive team, if not above, but pitching and hitting can take you a long ways. Reds were stout defensively and poor pitching ruined their season.
  21. Jed Bradley made his debut in the AFL tonight and pitched a perfect frame. Reports were that he hit 94 mph with his fastball, so nice to see a little velocity out of him in his first outing following an injury. That's about the most we can really take from 1 inning of work. Scarpetta had a forgettable night (0.0 IP, 7 ER), but Scooter had a 3-hit tonight in light of that. He just keeps on hitting, now at .417 with a couple homers and 5 walks in 8 games for Peoria. Nice to see a little pop out of him, but the word is he needs to continue to work on his defense. Lucky for him he has time as he's only 21 and Weeks blocking him.
