  1. Who else would rather have Branyan than Counsell give Hall a day off against RH pitchers a couple times a week? I don't know if it was stated above, but Russ had another HR tonight (though he did pop out with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth while a run behind).
  2. we don't need a closer. our starters will all pitch at least 116 pitches and the game will be out of reach by the time he leaves, or he will pitch a complete game.
  3. congrats on the nice effort put into this.
  4. sometimes I'm beyond hope. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  5. I know all about markov chains and statistical modeling. Want to see my grad school transcripts? Plenty of those numbers were educated guesses, and the webpage didn't indicate how the others were estimated.
  6. Moreso than Jim Rome, hisself? not liking Rome's style or personality is completely different than thinking he is untalented. It would be nice if fewer people decided that being a jerk was a good career move.
  7. If that's the general thought, the general thought is wrong.
  8. The pittsburgh batters were "wasting" his pitches by fouling so many off. It wasn't like he was throwing a high percentage of balls.
  9. I think it's just an outcome of the double-header. For some reason, they want to give Suppan an extra day of rest, or have him open the series.
  10. well, the average of the "outs" is -.295. What you've really provided is documentation that someone agrees with you. He doesn't clarify how he derived those numbers, but it is at least partially a guess.
  11. Ask me in a month whether the brewers will be buyers or sellers at the deadline. way too early to know. It will probably be too early, even then, to be out of the playoff race.
  12. I'd have to see some numbers on that. Given that the number of DP is less than twice the number of errors for the team, and the error moves the runners AND puts another runner on base, AND there is the sacrifice opportunity if the BIP is an out... I get why you think it might be so, but I think it's closer than you think and might well still be an advantage to the hit ball.
  13. But what if he could put up an OPS over .900 batting 5th?
  14. Parra may have gotten his stuff straightened out; he was doing fine until the prince error (and coincidentally went over 90 pitches).
  15. While I would have liked a FA Byrd signing a few years ago when he was available, it only makes sense to me now if they want to move villy back to the pen (the motivation being to use villy to improve the pen rather than getting byrd to replace a starter). Byrd is fine, but he's not much of an upgrade.
  16. the team SHOULD be better, there is more talent, but I can see that it might not do better than that team.
  17. runs allowed, or earned runs? errors could have a big impact on the small sample size. The rate of ER, is ERA, so is that what it comes down to? ERA and % of inherited runs allowed?
  18. My only problem was with the absolute word "never". I would guess that the value (contribution to scoring runs) is higher for putting the ball in play over a SO in every situation (inning, score, men on, outs). It's going to be an error once every 30 times or so, anyway, so that has value above the opportunity for sacrifices to move runners.
  19. Hmmm. Carnac says the question is: "What is the best way to assemble an expensive bullpen?" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. a reliever has to by a gritty gamer. everything else pales in comparison.
  21. Or how about when there are runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Would you rather have the K or a groundball to short? The groundball. My runner can take out the 2b, and the runner at third will score! Or the SS can boot the ball.
  22. ok, great to know that when I have a runner on third with one out, a strikeout is just as good as a fly ball to the outfield. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  23. Well, to be fair, they lost Soriano for awhile. Unfortunately for us they lost him when he was a black hole at the top of the lineup, and when he came back he remembered that he's kinda good. I think he started on the Berkmann diet--sure to provide a week of hitting .500.
