  1. good lord, why would what a guy did in the minors in 2002-2003 have any relevance to right now? Probably no players are the same.
  2. we're just talking about 0.5 to 1.5 seasons; that reduces the risk a lot, particularly if he is already fully healthy when acquired.
  3. get AJ burnett for the rest of the year (and next year). Sign Sheets to a back-loaded contract that pays him heavily after suppan is gone. solved.
  4. the no-trade clause assures the player that the team is going to build around him, which is a good thing to know.
  5. parra did well up to fielder's miscue. if his command is back, I don't care if he can't go more than 90 pitches.
  6. bourne's average might not rise much. he's not that good, beyond his speed.
  7. good for difelice. let's see if he can get out major league hitters.
  8. erasmo is a lefty, iirc. that would be a bunch of lefties in the pen. if a bat gets brought up, they probably aren't playing today, unless they have an early game. It takes awhile to go from nashville or huntsville to boston.
  9. or he could enter the NFL draft.
  10. errors are a rather over-rated stat in the minors. last I saw, he was getting to quite a few more balls than any SS in his league.
  11. Nelson can play 1b, 3b, LF, and RF, though probably only play everyday 1b. I think he could have a gabe gross kind of impact at least, as a hitter, but he'd play some 1b and 3b rather than cf. I don't think he'll ever be the brewers starting 1b, barring injury. your hypothetical 500 major league AB next season: .250/.320/.470, 18 HR, 4 SB though he has typically needed a second season at a level to do well.
  12. now 4th RPI, and still first SOS
  13. I haven't seen Jeffress pitch, but I thought he doesn't really strain too much to throw hard. He is a couple inches taller than Lincecum.
  14. Ford's average is certainly taking a dive. He shouldn't be doing this when repeating. Starting to look like Lorenzo and Caufield might be the only OF with a CHANCE for a promotion, next season. Ford and Fermaint are fighting to remain legitimate prospects, imo.
  15. cubfan, I said overproducing or reaching. Ramirez is among those playing close to expectations; same with derosa. Note that I would put Braun in to the same category even though his average is lower than I would have expected and a goodly amount of his HR were in the last two games--his performance is in the "ballpark" of what his expectations would be. Regarding Zambrano, maybe he has turned the corner, but I'd think it was more likely this run is an aberration rather than him suddenly refusing to throw balls. He's not a 24 year old.
  16. I have no doubt that the brewers will be above STL before the end of the season. Perhaps before the end of may.
  17. I have felt like you do. When I saw him this season, it looked like he's toned things down a bit. Still, short skinny fireballers don't have a great track record at starting pitcher.
  18. well, nunez is basically counsell's backup in case of an injury because he can play all infield positions well. That has value, but not much. He'd be a lot better choice than bringing up Chavez. I like Crabbe, but he's probably not going to have a career OPS in the majors much north of .700, so...meh. I do like the crabbe + gwynn for Maddux idea. maybe throw in Weaver.
  19. I don't see how the cubs are a "handsdown" favorite, though favorite they may be. With Hill demoted, their starting pitching consists of the hugely overproducing Zambrano and Dempster. Every one of their batters is overproducing or reaching their potential, except Soriano. They SHOULD have a huge lead, but they don't. On the other hand, most of the brewers are underproducing their potential and they are still .500. given odds, I'd put my money on the brewers.
  20. Now, 5th in RPI, still first in SOS.
  21. You can send down players for a rehab assignment, even if they have no options left. (pared back long nested quote --1992)
  22. I can't imagine anyone doing significantly better than Melvin. Certainly no one on these boards, myself included. thus, I guess I have to give the guy an "A". Humans aren't perfect. Just think. We could have Steve Phillips as our GM. How do you think things would look now?
  23. while I'm not advocating it nor predicting it, guys get promoted from AA to the majors all the time. see: Cabrera, Miguel.
  24. defelice's options are pretty much immaterial as he is 31 years old (assuming he has one, anyway). dillard's doesn't make much difference either, he'll be up in September, probably. Only one to worry about is gamel.
  25. Pie is still very young. He'll be in their organization for a couple more years at least, even if he doesn't put up more than corey patterson numbers.
