  1. you sure about that? I thought he only had to be on the 40 man roster to avoid being a minor league FA. It's not like he's used up his options or anything. If he's younger than, and better than another player, you bet they should keep him. of course, there is more than one way to assess "better".
  2. I thought most teams pass almost every player they would contemplate trading through revocable waivers. Once they clear, they can be dealt.
  3. I would have thought Gwynn, Jackson, and one of the A or A+ OF would have been a better deal than what Boston got. I would have done that if I was Melvin.
  4. F.T. Joey, why wouldn't waiver deals include guys with fat contracts? those are exactly the kind of guys that can pass through waivers.
  5. BSCR--no, I meant after the season. No need to move him off the 40 man now.
  6. the issue at this point is he more of a prospect than dillon, nix, sarfate, rottino, and several other players that are on the 40 man roster? He's only 24 and he's in AAA. It's not like he's in Brevard.
  7. I like him and I think he could have a career, but I wouldn't use a 40 man roster spot on him, and someone will sign him. He's had enough time to develop command of his pitches, and hasn't.
  8. He's a minor league free agent if he's not on the 40 man. The place he fits in is as a LH OF and backup 1B. If Jenkins is gone, and Gross is gone... But really, I'm thinking of him in 2009 where he and LaPorta could split time. Possibly a 2008 callup. I'm thinking Brad is really only getting over his injury now. Of course, it would depend on who else is vulnerable at the end of the year. I don't know that. If anyone wants to start a new thread, that would be nice.
  9. betemit could be part of a decent platoon at 3b, if his historical performance is indicative.
  10. Disappointing: Weeks, Suppan, Capuano, Capellan (remember him?), Hall Surprising: Braun. Mench; he's better than I thought he would be. Hardy was certainly a surprise earlier in the season, Villanueva has gone into the toilet lately, so he doesn't qualify either. Prince has been a bit of a surprise regarding the HR numbers, but that has leveled off for quite sometime, too. Shouse has certainly been surprisingly effective lately.
  11. I tried to post a link to Brad's MILB.com stats page, but failed. Nelson actually hits with RISP!!!!! Something the big club could use. I doubt he'll ever be a star, but I think he might be able to contribute. Put him on the 40 man at the end of the season, there are a few guys that can be dispensed with then. And, he only has one error this season.
  12. it looked like a pretty good A+ catcher. would you have given up a pre-suspension Salome?
  13. 6th place wouldn't be bad if it didn't represent the majority of the games, and if their pitching wasn't middle of the road, too. what do you think is more available: an elite starting pitcher, or a hitter that can excel vs. RH pitchers. I think the latter.
  14. only thing wrong with standing pat is if they lose an opportunity to get better. An elite starter would be hard to obtain, and we don't need any 3-4-5 types. Brewers need someone that can rake against RH pitchers. If one is available, they need to go get him.
  15. the only ones I'd want are griffey or dunn, if the price is acceptable. I'd like victorino, but he isn't going anywhere. dye is bad this year, and swings from the wrong side. rowand isn't that good.
  16. I'm sure he's not available, though I'd love to have him. He probably shouldn't be an everyday player at this point--look at his splits.
  17. Brantley has sure been an effective basestealer for someone who doesn't have much speed, and gwynn never walked very much in the minors. I think brantley strikes out less, too. I do agree that Ford might have a higher ceiling, but might never approach it with his SO. I think Brantley could have a .340 OBP in the majors today.
  18. lofton would have been a great addition to the brewers if they could have gotten him for gwynn or something similar in value. whether he plays CF or not, the brewers need someone that rakes vs. RH pitching. vs: RH: Lofton, Jenkins, with Hall and Hart sharing a position. vs. LH: Hall, Hart, Mench, assuming none of those guys were lost in aquiring Lofton. or you could give hall some time at 2b or SS (I know, they didn't want to do it, but this is a playoff race, gents). Lofton could have gone right into the leadoff role. BREWERS NEED SOMEONE THAT CAN HIT RH PITCHERS! yes, I was screaming.
  19. anyone that doesn't think the brewers offense and bullpen is better than the Cubs simply doesn't know what they are talking about. You can make the case for their starting pitching; however the only ones I'd want are zambrano and lilly (and they are getting paid handsomely). hill is fine. I wouldn't take marshall or marquis over anyone that has started for the brewers this season.
  20. on some board I put my guess: they all stay where they are.
  21. two questions: how is Brantley not the highest ranked OF, outside of LaPorta? He's 20 at AA, and his average is rising, and has never had OBP under .400 for a season yet. He should get a callup next year, if he stays on this course. Offensively, he's what everyone wanted Gwynn to be. how is katin ranked noticeably higher than brad nelson? They are the same age, have about the same number of HR and average is close. nelson is in AAA, and katin is striking out an ungodly amount. They are close to being the same guy to me. Only thing is Nelson needs to be put on the 40 man in the offseason.
  22. I only read the first 4 and the last pages on this thread, so I'll apologize if this is redundant. Assuming Linebrink walks at the end of the season, and he retains his type A status, and gets signed, the brewers pick up a late first or early second and sandwich round pick. OK, those guys we pick, if we trust our scouting dept., will probably end up being better than Inman and Garrison were. We just lose a couple years of development on them, and Thatcher, who is the type of guy that can always be found. That's not that big of a cost, if Linebrink makes a difference. I did like Garrison, though, he was getting better as the season went by.
  23. I doubt it could be anything like amphetamine. that would be a banned "stimulant", not "performance enhancer". Either: 1) there was a lab error, but I think they double check positives; 2) he took some inadequately-labelled supplements that had the banned substance; 3) he didn't know the substance was banned; 4) he was stupid. coach, is he on ritalin?
  24. are you forgetting about gindl?
  25. after reading the posts, I still don't see a **likely to happen** better option than bringing Jenkins back. The team is mediocre vs. RH hitting (look up the splits), and I don't want to see one of the few guys over .800 OPS vs RH leave the team.
