  1. Like so many other things in the 2009 Brewer season, this makes me steaming angry as well. It might be the single move that makes me the most angry and disappointed in Doug Melvin. Shame on him for this one, big time.
  2. I thought Smoltz showing up the ump on a close non-strike call was fairly disrespectful. I didn't see Vargas doing the same thing when he threw the same pitch in the eight that wasn't called a strike.
  3. As far as I'm concerned, there's no quantitative data on Escobar's defense, that would help us estimate his true defensive talent. I think X would actually agree with that. I'm not so sure, seeing as how he cited the limited data as the main argument why Escobar is not ready to play at the MLB level. I understand game context is not part of the UZR equation. I mentioned it would be nice if they could incorporate qualitative data (such as game context) to come up with a more meaningful metric, that's all. Forgive me if I gave you the impression that I am ignorant on what their data is driving at.
  4. What really saddens me is the fact that Corey Patterson is taking up a 40-man spot while Heether is on the verge of heading out the door. Makes no sense to me.
  5. Maybe, but he just hasn't converted outs on the rest of the plays like Hardy does. While I'm sure it will change over time, but Escobar has a bad UZR right now, and he's earned it. I keep trying to make sense of statements like this, but to no avail. How can anyone credibly point to the UZR data after 16 MLB starts as a reason a rookie isn't ready? The only game-costing defensive gaffe that was made since Escobar came up was committed by UZR friendly Cameron. Maybe gaffes that actually cost teams the W should be weighted heavier in the almighty UZR stat.
  6. I don't see the humor in punked or Jack(butt) If you can't find humor in Jackbutt (really c'mon with the filter already, you know the FCC has lightened up a little), then I can see why you didn't find this amusing. That's fair I suppose, regardless of how I feel you are missing out.
  7. The same thing that makes it fun to watch athletes hot dog in every other sport, to break up the monotony and have some fun. So is the Lambeau Leap in the same boat as this, since Butler started it when the Packers were far from Super Bowl stardom? Would the celebration be OK with you if the Brewers were 10 games up in the division? Why would that make it more tolerable?
  8. I guess I don't see how Escobar has been a below average defender in the same token Hardy has been above average. Escobar has already made at least 3 plays this year that Hardy could not make in his wildest dreams.
  9. Uhh, nothing like sucking the joy out of creativity and pizazz. In the planning, at least they are actually thinking about a walk-off HR. Its a fine line between going through the motions and just going through the motions. Its entertainment, and creativity is welcome in my entertainment world. At the very least it shows me they are still interested, rather than just showing up at the ballpark for a 53% chance of being beat.
  10. This one is easy for me... Escobar.
  11. This celebration would only work at home, since it was a planned walk-off celebration. I guarantee the players have no intention of taking this on the road. People always need something to complain about, especially people in Missouri. If I lived in Missouri, I certainly would be complaining 24/7 about something.
  12. So much for J-dy Gerut heating up... .167/.310/.208/.519 in his last ten games. The only way I could tolerate him being part of the 2010 Brewers is if he is making league minimum. Since that isn't possible, I hope he has no part in the 2010 Milwaukee Brewers. He is Gabe Gross without the "Gabe."
  13. I don't doubt Gerut is better than his numbers in MKE have shown. I also don't doubt Gerut is worse than his 2008 career best numbers. I would hope he is not in the cards for 500+ ABs next year, but I accept it as a possibility.
  14. his .228 BABIP I was thinking his low BABIP is a product of his propensity for routinely weakly grounding out to 2B. If he is being so much as considered, that would be enough for immediate dismissal of Melvin/Ash, in my opinion. What if he puts up a .300/.360/.510 type of line in September? I understand why most believe Patterson is trash for life, but its not out of the realm of possibility that he finds a place somewhere and gets into a groove.
  15. Where is all the Gerut love coming from?!?! Gerut is playing well? Gerut needs ABs? Was it the two games against CIN and WAS? He is still batting .205/.283/.318 in a Brewer uniform, how in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks could Patterson be that much worse? You say Gerut, I say Patterson. Potato, potato, tomato, tomato. Let's call the whole thing off! How can anyone be upset over which crappy player will get ABs in a meaningless Sept? They are both crappy!
  16. Maybe its me, or just the culture fostered by this organization, but I don't necessarily qualify a good hitter by whether or not he can hit 20+ HRs.
  17. Every argument around "just because it happened once, it won't necessarily happen again" doesn't really hold water. That is a valid point, if conversely you concede the argument that, "Hardy has hit before, therefore he WILL hit again one day." You can't have your cake and eat it too when architecting arguments. While past performances are great gauges as to what a player is capable of, it has absolutely no bearing on what the player will do in the future. On top of that, JJ did NOT hit for much power in the minors, not that his minor league stats when compared to Bill Hall's stats are relevant when discussing their big league careers. Just because he was bad this season does not make him a bad hitter. All I know is it makes him a bad hitter for this season. Hardy has been a bad hitter at other times in his career as well, so it wasn't just this season.
  18. Coincedence that Rivera catches the best pitching performance of the series? I was wondering why he wasn't catching for his guy yesterday.
  19. JJ has about twice the power capability of Escobar. And Bill Hall had twice the power capability of Hardy. Just because Hardy hit 26 HRs two years ago doesn't mean he will do it again. The jury still has to be out on Hardy, as two good seasons does not make a player... just ask Bill Hall. Wait don't ask him, he will not be frank.
  20. I'm sure more than I saw his royal Pujol admire his pop-fly ground rule double down the line yesterday. He looked like he sat in the box for a good 3 seconds before deciding what to do.
  21. Again to pretend the Escobar is suddenly going to be greater then the top palyers at the position just isn't smart. So in order to be smart, we should assume Escobar will not be better than Hardy defensively? Not only is Escobar already better than Hardy defensively, he will become better than him offensively as well. Time will tell who the smart one is, but in the meantime you can be smarter with the huge sample size UZR on Escobar. Also, two of the errors charged to Escobar were done so because they had to be charged to someone, and were not the result of sloppy play on his part.
  22. BTW, what is the record number of posts for a topic that didn't include Branyon? Well, it WAS 578! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  23. Using simple WAR Hardy was worth 6.5M so far this season because of his defense. He was worth 22.2M last year. Someone mentioned this to argue against another's statement that Hardy was not living up to his paycheck this year. That's what started the whole off-topic extravaganza, although very unintentionally.
  24. And I'll take that a rookie player isn't going to suddenly be much better than the top palyers defensively at his position. Why not? Is it not possible?
  25. While picking up Penny for peanuts would have been nice, if I had the choice between going to pitch for a playoff contender in San Francisco and going to a 2009 sinking ship in Milwaukee, it would not be a very tough choice for me to make.
