  1. I think the best way to look at it is the $ value is what the production, not the player, was worth. I was replying to, Not much more though since when you start factoring in his age and that he is mainly a platoon player you are looking at a max of about $3-5m a year which is close to what Fangraphs was predicting. But I understand your point about its goal as a descriptor and not a predictor. Allow me to rephrase... there is no way Gabe Kapler's production in 2009 was worth $5.2m. Is it really that hard to believe that Ryan Braun's defense and position make him significantly less valuable than he seems because of his bat? Are you saying you agree (with Fangraphs) that Nyjer Morgan was more valuable than Ryan Braun in 2009, in terms of dollar value production?
  2. Kapler wasn't going to get $3m anywhere, let alone the $5.2m that Fangraphs predicted. He got just over $1m, which is just over what he got last year.
  3. I would like to see a tiered luxury tax. Three levels of increasing tax depending on how badly a team wants to buy a world championship, with the third tier being so obtrusive (Yankee spending level), that it would wash out most of the profit gained by actually making it to the world series. Its not much of a game right now for Cashman and the Steinbrenners. Imagine playing monopoly with a group, and one person gets to start with double the cash as everyone else, then gets double of what everyone else gets when they pass go or collect on cards/properties. Its not their fault they get to start with all those extra resources, but it doesn't make for a fair game either.
  4. I would think they are looking at the formula to make the outcome a bit more realistic looking. The dollar figure seems like a work in progress at this point, and a way to compare players using Fangraphs money, rather than real-world value/contracts.
  5. I don't think there is any question the Brewers need to submit a serious offer to Prince. The CC offer was in no way serious, and management fully expected him to reject the offer and sign in NY. What screws the Brewers over with Fielder is the money that Teixeira got from the Yankees. While Teixeira is a better defender, Prince is developing into a superior batter. The two are very close in value, and if the Brewers feel there is any way to keep a long-term Fielder contract at or under $20MM per year, they need to do it now. 7 years/$135MM with many incentives, a key to the city, a new high-rise on the East Side sculpted to his likeness, an express-way named after him, a sandwich at Cousins named after him, and a 7 year supply of the best tofu.
  6. If anyone can believe Kazmir was paid off to make an errand throw in game 6 of the ALCS, then I wonder how certain they are that several umps are being paid handsomely to make sure the Yankees made it to the World Series without a hitch this year. If anyone is being paid off, its the umpires.
  7. Wow, those are some extremely gaudy digs. The price does not lessen my desire to purchase, the designs do that all on their own.
  8. Yankees haven't won a world series since 2000 and haven't played in one since 2003 The Yankees made poor free agent personnel decisions, and they STILL made the playoffs each year since 2003 with the exception of last year. What did they do to compensate? They went out and spent over $300 million to correct their situation. No other team in all of sports has that much power, and the league is only as balanced as their richest and poorest teams allow. The situation is much worse than you like to believe. But as obsessed says, as long as people keep shelling out their money for the slightest hope that their team can compete against a $200+ million payroll, nothing is going to change. Its also relatively easy to predict the Yankees will at least be in the World Series 4 of the next 5 years, and will likely win 2 or 3 of them.
  9. Sweeping the Cardinals during the last series of the season, setting them up for ultimate failure in the NLDS. Next time, LaRussa, let Fielder hit. Seriously... 1) Bomb celebration 2) Opening day win over Gregg 3) Fielder Grand Slam vs. CLE 4) Triple Play 5) Cameron catch
  10. Yes we all wish for the day baseball becomes the NHL Baseball is a few years behind the NHL, but its coming. Guaranteed contracts are archaic and will eventually lead to a lockout.
  11. The Heath Bell story is a little disconcerting as well. Granted I have no idea what kind of person Heath Bell is, but that situation didn't work itself out for Peterson either.
  12. The Brewers finished 3rd in the NL in Ks, but still finished 3rd in Runs Scored, because we were 3rd in OPS. If Gamel gets 500 ABs, and strikes out 210 times in those ABs while maintaining a .760 OPS, he will end up costing the team over 17 runs vs. a player that could OPS .740 with half his Ks. I can't disagree with what you said about team run scoring with mashers all around him, but all else remaining constant (including a .760 OPS at 3rd base), if Gamel Ks at the rate he did this year it will affect more than one run for the season. Especially if you can find someone who can OPS the same but with half the Ks. Whoops, that's bad math. I come up with 3 runs. That's not worth mentioning. Keep up with the ugly Gamel, as long as you hit a dinger once a week.
  13. I'm sorry, but if Gamel continues to strike out in 42% of his official at-bats, it most definitely will affect how many runs the team scores if he gets anywhere near 300 ABs.
  14. What I think: Phillies over the Yankees, as there are no A-bombs from A-Rod in another Fall disappearing act for the wondrous one. CC chokes in the WS this time, instead of the LCS or LDS. What I want: Angels v. Dodgers. I don't really love LA, but I like the East Coast teams even less. I have always hated the Twins, and there is no way I want to see the Cards win it again (mainly due to Berta and LaRussa). The Rockies have no chance, and I can't get behind a team that has no chance. So by process of elimination, its the battle of Smogtown USA. At least its sunny above the smog.
  15. I was pulling for the Tigers, but maybe that's because I feel bad for the city of Detroit and the fact that I really hate Minnesota. It doesn't matter much, because either one of them are fodder for the Yankees machine.
  16. I'd take Ricarrdi as my GM anyday. Even if he thinks you don't like baseball?
  17. He wouldn't have had to wait 6 years to hit free agency in the NFL's system. Of course, that LA team would need to have available room under their cap in order to sign Braun in addition to having a spot for him in their outfield.
  18. He finished with a 5.30 ERA, and I doubt people would have expected much more than that out of him when the season began regardless. So if that is what were supposed to expect out of Suppan this year, what should we be expecting of him next year? Honestly, I wasn't expecting Suppan to be as awful as he was this year, but now I expect him to be as putrid as ever next year. The organization should just give him his money and make him go away. Out of sight, out of mind. He clearly hurts the team more than he helps at this stage in his career (which is just about done).
  19. Well said danzig. I am already thinking about where Escobar will end up in 4 or 5 years.
  20. Rockies. I have faith that they can actually sell-out their playoff games, despite the paltry attendance tonight. I thought they had something like 39k there last night? Since the Braves are my least favorite team in the history of baseball (the Atlanta version of course), I will be siding with the Rockies. They have a huge advantage with Suppan going for the Brewers tonight.
  21. Weeks moving to CF is not close to Hardy moving to 3B. Hardy would be moving to an easier position to field, with the same depth perception and proximity to the plays. Weeks moving to CF is a trickier move, and I am glad they are trying to squash this fan generated perspective. Weeks would not be a good CFer. Hardy could be a decent 3B. That is the difference.
  22. The interchangability of NFL teams can be unappealing. A New York team in football is a generic team subject to maximized league control like all the other generic teams while in the less authoritarian structure of baseball the New York teams and all the others have some real life characteristics of their homes. I would rather all the teams be generic than four to six of the teams being relevant and the other 24 irrelevant. Not that I agree that the NFL franchises are generic, because they absolutely have their own personality. Are they generic because they are all playing with 52 cards? Would it be less generic if we could take away half the cards from the Titans, Jaguars, and Packers? Does that really add pizazz and personality?
  23. He's a professional and did fine. Hopefully in the future he can become as active in the Brewer community as Powell was, but all in due time I suppose.
  24. Isn't Parra the worst pitcher in the league this year? He's gotta be pretty close, so there are 4, FOUR, guys in the rotation that are vying for the worst pitcher in the league this year. How in the world can any team be successful with that starting rotation?
  25. 5.5 million for depth in the rotation next year? The only depth I see Looper bringing is how much further he can bring down the sinking rotation. Looper is done, its fairly obvious he is terrible. To pay him another $5.5MM to be terrible again next year does not add pitching depth, it just adds another crummy pitcher for $5.5MM.
