  1. I'm not sure how many casual fans care about who these winners are, but I know why baseball does it. They want to be relevant for as much of the year as they can, but I think its ridiculous.
  2. So when is this award announced? Next week, two more weeks, right before spring training? Could they drag it out any further? The baseball award season feels like the NBA playoffs. Just announce them already.
  3. "Coghlan led NL rookies in average (.321), runs (84), hits (162), doubles (31), total bases (232), multi-hit games (51), and on-base percentage (.390)." http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/brewers.html Looks good to me. Not sure where the hate comes from. He earned it, even though he might be a jerk, allegedly.
  4. It wouldn't surprise me even a tiny bit for Looper to show up with like a 4.58 ERA next year. In his last three years (Looper's only years as a full-time starter), he has an ERA of 4.76. He has given up 22, 25, & 39 home runs. If he pitches in a Miller Park type stadium or smaller, I would be very surprised if a 35 year old Looper, who gave up 39 home runs in 2009, would have a sub 4.75 ERA. He would need to pitch in an awfully pitcher friendly park to come anywhere near 4.50 next year.
  5. What do people expect from Looper next year? He's a tough guy to project. 4.75 ERA? Expecting a 4.75 ERA from a full season of Looper in 2010 is expecting something just short of a miracle. I will be mildly surprised if he finds a spot in a rotation next year, and if he does it will come very, very cheap for the chancing team. He is a 4.50-5.00 ERA type so no big loss, but to say that last year he was somehow much worse than previous years just isn't true. Saying Looper had one of his worst career years last year, and that it was MUCH worse than a few of his previous years is very true, even if you ONLY look at xFIP. He was a bottom feeding 35 year old pitcher. His days are numbered, and might not have any left. To expect 4.50 from Looper going forward is on the fringe of wishful, just like expecting 4.50 from Suppan. Looper will need to pitch in Petco next year to keep his ERA under 4.75, just like Suppan.
  6. Melvin would have to get very unlucky to spend $10 million for a slight upgrade over one of the worst pitchers in the league. Then again, Suppan and Gagne will let you know that it's entirely possible.
  7. How much money would it really take to replace one of the worst pitchers in the league? Assuming he would come back and be slightly better is not a stretch, but assuming Looper can come back and be at least average is a huge assumption.
  8. Wow is this thread played out. Has there even been a mention of Hardy in the past five pages?
  9. Or you can buy an expensive crappy TV (Suppan) and suffer buyer's remorse immediately.
  10. Maybe Cameron made too many costly errors this year to garner the recognition. Or maybe he is too old to win one?
  11. Because Elias has the dumbest rankings ever? Maybe I would take it more seriously if John Grabow didn't garner more compensation than Cameron, Carl Crawford, Rich Harden and Andy Pettitte. Its almost a joke how they rank them. Matsui isn't even a Class B! With so much at stake, draft picks and high dollar player compensation, you would think they could find a system that looks less like a monkey pulled names out of a hat.
  12. Well we just have to hope that Suppan, Riske and Bill Hall contribute to some Brewer wins this year!
  13. Am I the only one who thinks Looper did a pretty good job pitching with a minor injury all year? Probably. If Cameron is an elite CF, then why has Elias tagged him as a class B free agent? I would think an elite CF must be in the top 20% of free agents, right? Elias needs to check out his WAR compared to Jermaine Dye and do some reconfiguring.
  14. Havent seen this posted yet. Matt Capps was offered for Hardy. More evidence of how low Hardy's value was.
  15. I would far rather have Harang than Gomez. As of this moment Gomez isnt even a major league offensive player while Harang is a quality innings eater. Where have I heard this before? The Brewers don't really need another eight figure innings eater.
  16. That's a little ridiculous since there is a huge debate as to whether Gomez should actually be starting or whether he should be in the minors or a 4th or 5th outfielder. Debate it all you like, the bottom line is Gomez is going into camp as the starting CF. What he should be doing has nothing to do with the team, and everything to do with people's opinion. The sad part is that Carlos Gomez has haters in Milwaukee before he even slips into a Brewer uni.
  17. A professional athlete smokes pot. Wow. If it helps him keep his ERA under 3, would it be considered a performance enhancing drug?
  18. In a dream offseason, what could Melvin realistically get with this $14 mil that could turn us into a playoff team? What are you hoping for? An HD Scoreboard in CF. And better fireworks before the game and after wins (when the roof is open). And a crying room for Corey Hart for when he realizes he has no body to die his hair black with next year. Seriously, I assume Melvin is going to make a run at Mulder, Lackey, Washburn or Davis. The later two would not excite me. The former two would make me moderately satisfied. The bottom line is he traded our back up SS for a starting CFer with similar 2009 offensive stats. Hardly a call for crucifying the GM.
  19. For 2010, I think there's little chance Escobar + Gomez + $14 is as valuable as Hardy + Cameron. This depends entirely on what Melvin gets for the $14M.
  20. What will you think if JJ replicates his 09 numbers?that it was a lateral at best trade? I don't know if I'd even start Gomez over Gerut who I also wasn't a fan of.So if Gomez outhits Hardy and plays better defense than Hardy at a position of need for the Brewers, it was a lateral trade at best? Like I said, those who are already crapping on Gomez (not just being skeptical, but actually dumping on him rather harshly) are setting themselves up for a rough go if this kid pans out. Why be so polar on this?
  21. Gomez' UZR/150 10.0. Cameron's UZR/150 10.3. So no. I thought we needed 3 YEARS of data to conclude on this stat?
  22. But .229/.287/.337 at a more offensive position is worth getting excited about! Since when is CF a more offensive position than SS? Do you think Escobar is going to ever put up something less than .229/.287/.337? I would be NO on that one.
  23. I don't believe he'll ever be a good player. Wow, that takes balls. Hopefully for you he never takes that step up to elite CFer. Ignoring the accuracy of your criticism, the distribution of production for a player over a season has little effect on his overall value. You're right, statistically. But if a player is going to put up 75% of his overall production in a short time period, then spread the other 25% over the remaining much larger time period, there is no way that player has an equal effect on wins as a player that spreads their production more evenly throughout the course of the season. Of course if we are talking about .229/.302/.357 with 11 HRs in 414 ABs, then then it doesn't matter when that production occurred. Its just bad all year long.
  24. We sold low on Hardy. I think Melvin played JJ Hardy rather poorly from start to finish I agree with this. And Melvin was not going to extend Hardy, so he had to go. There was no leverage on his side in any deal. Clubs knew Melvin needed to unload him, and it just so happened he sucked in 2009. At least Melvin is taking a chance on a player sucking at a position we have a need, instead of keeping Hardy and having him suck instead of playing Escobar.
  25. JJ Hardy is probably gonna rebound next year. Bill Hall will probably rebound next year. JJ Hardy will probably not rebound next year. Too easy.
