  1. It's a working holiday for us. We spend the entire week setting up balloon drops and decorating for NYE so by the time the day rolls around all we want to do is go home and relax. We buy some crab legs or lobster have a glass of wine and try to stay up until midnight.
  2. RIP Cheetah. http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/386404_2883211527706_1482655514_32938122_2127758343_n.jpg
  3. There fixed it. Poorer quality but oh well. Just to show he isn't always a ball of dirt. http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv208/ThurstonFluff/381394_2850484589553_1482655514_32916787_549133252_n.jpg

He's not always this dirty but would be if he had his way. He likes to tear cloth disks apart and play keep away both of which really sucks. Anyone manage to break their pup of that.
  5. The point was that they aren't the same player. Both of them suck as starters and I'm not jumping for joy over the signing but as a bench player I'd rather have the glove of Izturis than the bat of Yuni B. Someone had a good point earlier on this. Ideally a bench player should be good at something. I hope we can get someone to hit off the bench yet. Then Izturis would look even better.
  6. Furthermore, Bush wasn't highly paid because he was never very good, it's nearly impossible to overpay an average/below average player prior to free agency. The issue I've always attacked was the ceiling of all of the players involved. Keep in mind Overbay was pretty much an average 1st baseman himself. It isn't like we traded Prince for those guys. Most likely they would have spent a little bit of it on Hawkins and Saito, though. K-Rod accepting arby certainly seems to have been what caused them to not be able to sign those guys. If that's the case then I'm glad K-Rod accepted arby. I'm not a fan of relying on ancient players in key roles. Especially in the post steroid soon to be HGH testing era. I think Melvin does better when he goes for quality vs quantity. Even though he misses on some of the guys (Capellan) I'd rather take the chance that a high ceiling players reaches that ceiling than a bunch of low to mid ceiling players perform better than expected. Jackson was a high ceiling guy. That he failed to get to that ceiling shouldn't be confused with what he projected to when he was traded for. In reality that deal was for one prospect with a fairly high ceiling and some stop gap players who ended up helping us get to the playoffs for the first time in decades. Don't forget Bush was a very big part of that. It was after that season that he fell apart.
  7. In the spirit of Christmas I'd like to point out he must be a decent enough person for them to want him back at all.
  8. It never fails to crack me up just HOW much Doug Melvin loves when he gets a laugh. He's Canadian who likes a good joke, beer and named Doug. Personally I think he's Doug McKenzie. I'm waiting for him to slip and and say "you're such a hoser Eh," or see him eat some backbacon. When either of those things happen I'll have all the evidence I need...Eh.
  9. This is from the article linked above by reillymcshane Don't worry Casey you did make the organization and community better than it was before you got here. Class is something always welcomed and those around you are always better for it. You sir were the very definition of class. Maybe even classier than a Cardinal.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Sorry I wasn't trying to put words in anyone's mouth. I guess hypothetically we may have traded for someone in a similar situation who had two surprisingly good years but was bound to come back to Earth. One would imagine other GM's saw the same thing Melvin did when he didn't give him the multiple year deal he wanted. With that in mind I am not sold that he could have got a better player with with less risk than Casey was. In fact we could have got less if we did trade him high and ended up with a player who crashed as bad as Casey did. If that player wasn't needed by a team that matched our needs we could have just had to non tender him.
  11. But, if we got a decent middle reliever for Casey after last year, what could we have got if we would have sold high before last year? IF we go by this then we should have traded Prince two years ago to get maximum value for him. Would you have traded the last two years of Prince just to get his maximum value as a trading chip? If you always sell high to get max trade value then you never get the full use of that high level player. I understand the idea of selling while their value is still high but perhaps about to regress. The problem with that concept is I don't know of anyone clairvoyant enough to know when that regression is going to start or when it reaches the point of better value as a trade chip than a player. Most trades seem to be one made where one team has something of value but not as valuable to that team as it is to another. This is a perfect example of that. WE got the best years out of Casey and got a player at a position we desperately needed help at. Win win trades are fine to me. They don't all need to be huge wins for us and huge disappointments to the other team to make them good trades.
  12. Has Boras done anything this off season, or has it been a complete fail for him and his clients? I read a few comments from Melvin about how he isn't going to offer Prince an deal because Boras would use it to shop around for a better deal. I have to wonder if maybe more GM's aren't starting to figure out the Boras strategy and acting accordingly.
  13. Back to K-Rod, I worry that he could be a problem in the clubhouse next season. He griped a bit this season about his lack of save opportunities, but the Brewers were in a playoff race and he wanted to look like a good guy so he could get an offer this off-season. If he's back as a setup guy, he could be a real cancer next year when he sits and watches Axford rack up saves. He didn't cause problems last season even though he stated he wanted to close. If he accepts arbitration then he will have out himself in that situation. Hard to complain if he chose to take the offer. There is always places for established closers to get a job closing if they want it. If he'd rather take the money and try again that is his choice but he can't then complain about it.
  14. Congrats Dale. You did a fine job here and deserved a shot. I wish I didn't also have to hope you fell flat on your face.
  15. I'm happy for Sveum. It appears he'll have his choice of gigs. I appreciated his loyalty to us for so long. It takes a certain type of fortitude to go back to the team that passed you over and not let it become toxic in the years following. The only issue I have is this and Matheny in SL makes it harder to hate those teams. The easy part is knowing that you should not start Mark freaking Kotsay in CF in the National League freaking Championship Series. Give it a break already. 96 wins, a division championship, the first post season series win in nearly 3 decades and second in manger of the year votes, all as a rookie manager, should be enough to eliminate this from every freaking thread.
  16. Someone who makes less outs has more value than someone who makes more outs. True but people who can score runs without any help is also more valuable than someone who can. one of the tenants of Moneyball is to find undervalued assets. Given the amount of money Carroll got at his age with his assets firmly in the OPB and defense perhaps the pendulum is swinging back to power.
  17. Why trade anything for a guy who isn't a lock to be better than Gamel? I get that Gamel isn't proven but given Sanchez mediocre numbers for a 1B I'll take my chances with the kid who is cheaper and under control longer who won't cost us any other players.

  20. It might not be a bad idea to think about foster care first. You will get to know how the whole system works, will help a kid and may end up adopting one in the end. My folks started that way and we ended up adopted 7 of the 12 long term placements. Not because we had to but by the time their parents rights were terminated they were a natural part of the family. The nice thing about going that route is by the time they were officially up for adoption the home was already set. Social workers like to have stability for the kids so they work hard to keep them in the home if possible. That means a lot of the red tape is taken care of for you. Not to mention most if not all of the cost.
  21. That he'll be one in a long line of terrible fielders who have won a gold glove. The point he was making is Braun is not a terrible left fielder like some have said. He's actually above average for left fielders. You simply misjudged how good he is or how bad the rest of the league is in left. Left and first are where teams hide their good hitting, bad fielding players so it shouldn't shock anyone that, given his tools, Braun is above average there. Of the three listed, he would be third but voters will remember Holliday's miscue last year You don't think Braun having comparable perhaps a little bit better defensive stats could have something to do with why he might be chosen ahead of Holliday?
  22. I remember something about Duncan having said this was his last season a while ago. Don't remember when or if it was speculation from an announcer but I think it was sort of known he was retiring. Make sense since he missed a lot of time due to his wife's ill health. What ever the reason I wish them both well. Nothing about competitive sports could make me wish either of them anything but a full and happy retirement. Unless that meant the Brewers lose one single game for it to happen.
  23. I hear you & agree on all counts, except that third base is where you can hide a lack of range (see McGehee). For as much as I loathe Betancourt, he has great hands & a good arm. His arm strength & accuracy actually reminds me a bit of J.J.'s. Only if that lack of range is due to lack of speed. If it's due to lack of that first step, which is Yuni's major problem, third would be a bad place. Third is where quick reflexes it is the most important. I think we are one the same page as far as all the other assets he has. He really only lacked range at short. The rest of his tools seemed ok. His offense doesn't really play anywhere so it's all kind of moot. Given the FA market at short I won't be jumping off any bridges if he is resigned to a short, cheap contract. That would mean we have more to make additions elsewhere to offset it. If we can get 96 wins with him at short making $6 million we can win a similar amount with him making $1 million and spending in areas that have a noticeable upgrade to be had.
  24. Skillset-wise, he's a third baseman. He'd actually probably defend pretty well there. I don't think so. It seemed to me his range issues were due to his slow reflexes more than his lack of actual speed. He never seemed to get a good first jump to the ball. Hell sometimes uit seemed like his first twitch was after the ball was past him. His lack of speed made that slow first step look even worse but a lot of slow SS make plays he didn't. JJ Hardy for example. He was no speed demon but he got to a lot more than Yuni did.
  25. I thought about posting our time-honored "celebratory cork pop" image, but thought it might be better to celebrate this without alcohol. Nice one. In a way I'm a little disappointed. I wanted him to come back and us beat him down. That would have been satisfying. As much as I hated him he was a very good manager. He had a way of getting all his guys to hate everyone and everything else so much that they never let up or gave up. He was the master of effective bitterness.
