  1. Just started watching. Is Maldonado hurt? Why exactly is George Kottaras starting?
  2. Cain is a great pitcher and it is cool to see him get that perfect game. What do you guys think in terms of Cain vs Verlander? Cain has actually been better so far this year and has been more consistent throughout his career and better in the postseason, yet most (many?) would take Verlander over Cain.... what do you think? Which pitcher would you rather have, strictly on talent (i.e. not taking contract status into it)
  3. I'm not as down on the Suppan signing as others. Suppan was signed to be a pitcher but also a psudeo player-coach/team leader and I think pitchers like Gallardo & Bush learned a lot from Suppan, especially Yo...
  4. Granted, hindsight is 20/20, but assuming the Brewers could have extended JJ Hardy, I'm really thinking that giving up on Hardy and trading him for Gomez just might have been the biggest mistake that Doug Melvin has made and arguably cost the Brewers the 2011 NL title. Considering how team friendly of a contract an extension of Hardy might have been after his down years, and looking at his 30 HR season last year, I can't help but wonder how much better the Brewers would be right now with Hardy as well. For one thing, they wouldn't have had to spend money on Gonzalez & Izturis and could have overpaid for Hairston if they wanted to, or spent that money elsewhere....I recognize that Hardy only has a .300 OBP so far this season but he does have 11 HR's and has continued to play great defense. Anyways, just wondering what you guys would consider the biggest mistake by Melvin. He's obviously made a lot of great moves: extending Braun & Gallardo, trading for Greinke & Sabathia, extending Hart, etc.... but giving up on Hardy, and then trading him for Gomez cost the Brewers bigtime.
  5. If the Dodgers are looking for pitching, trade them Wolf. I say that because I really really don't like the Dodgers. Anyways....
  6. I always loved watching him pitch. What a great competitor and pitcher he was (and hopefully can be again). It would be cool to see him back in the show, that'd be awesome
  7. Narron is our one small smidgeon of a hope that Josh Hamilton signs with the Brewers Because of that, and because a hitting coach isn't the reason for a small sample's batch of stats, I wouldn't fire him. Oh, and Jonathan Lucroy waves "hello"
  8. Wow, I had no idea that Overbay was that good of a minor league hitter. That said, I still think Morris projects to be similar to Overbay as an MLB player: a .280 hitter who has a few .300 seasons in his peak, 15-20 HR's a season, lots of doubles. Maybe not as many walks as Overbay. Morris was much more highly regarded coming out of college than Overbay. Maybe it has taken him longer to adjust to wood bats? He's playing real well in AA ball right now (22 doubles in 62 games! Plus a solid .289/.349 with 7 HR's and 38 RBI's)....
  9. Not sure if Hunter Morris is just an "OK prospect". He looks to me like the next Lyle Overbay, who could give almost the production of Hart in Hart's prime as a LHB at a fraction of the price. And who knows how much Hart's production will slip as he gets into his 30's? I wouldn't extend Hart, and the Brewers 1st round draft picks make it look like they have intention to extend Hart either
  10. I think I'd want the 1982 Cy Young award winner Pete Vuckovich somewhere in my rotation, probably over Caldwell
  11. I'd have to take Prince and his 143 OPS+ and 228 HR's in 6 seasons over Cooper. Maybe if Cooper was lights out in the postseason for the Brewers I'd think differently but he was an even worse postseason hitter than Prince Hitter.
  12. He's gone 3 for 4 tonight and now has his batting average up to .307 with a .390 OBP and a .943 OPS. As a 19 year old. Wow! The guy is still 8-9 years away from his peak....
  13. Not to overstate the obvious but I think the Dodgers are going to spend a ton of money in the off-season and will go after Cole Hamels, Greinke, Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn etc
  14. Ethier is better than Corey Hart. His 124 career OPS+ vs Hart's 115 career OPS+ supports that
  15. what a bunch of goofballs. Glad they are having fun... hopefully they'll start playing better baseball
  16. yes, first the Pirates must makes trades at the deadline that make no sense before they collapse.
  17. yes, absolutely. I think the point is, in the context of comparing various players, OBP + steals tells more of the story about a players' value. (which, as an example, helps Ryan Braun close the gap with Joey Votto in terms of: his OBP isn't as great, but he's a much better baserunner) it is just a matter of context.
  18. Ha! One of the few things I agree with Dusty Baker on.... On Base percentage is very important any way you look at it, but players who can get on base and run are much more valuable than Base Cloggers. Give me Rickey Henderson over Jimmy Foxx any day
  19. I consider OBP very important, but the problem with Dunn is he gets on base and then he's so slow he's a base clogger. At least when he was younger he could run a little I do think he needs 600 HR's to be seriously considered for the HOF
  20. Billy Hamilton is pretty amazing. He's a guy who can score from first standing up on a single up the middle. I doubt the Reds would trade him to us, even as desperate as they may be for upgrades at pitcher to get to the next level
  21. Mark Kotsay. Centerfield. Definitely.
  22. still too small of a sample (especially with the relief pitchers) to really know for sure
  23. Chicken Wolf! http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wolfji01.shtml
  24. Let us hope that is not the new "trend" for closers among the next generation!
