  1. Plus the Garza or Dempster or even Hamels that Melvin will go all in for.... I think the Brew Crew will continue winning and Melvin will be a buyer at the deadline. Of course, said predicted winning streak depends a lot on the health of #8
  2. Most of these threads have been about the Brewers being sellers. If they win the series vs the Reds, then MA & DM could very likely decide to be buyers.... I'm interested in which players the Brewers might likely be targeting if they are buyers. One would think that they'd be after a SS and a pitcher. As crazy as it sounds, even to me as I type this, if the Brewers trade for Cole Hamels and Yunel Escobar, is that enough to put them in the World Series race? If it looks like Greinke won't sign an extension, I could really see Mark A then deciding that they need to go "all in" this season with the Greinke window closing. *Please note, this is not what I'm advocating, I would trade Greinke for prospects and reload.... What would it take to get Hamels? I would imagine it'd be pretty ugly in terms of a hit to our depleted farm. Fiers & Thornburg & Gennett? With Utley in a big decline likely, the Phillies would have interest in Gennett. I really hope I'm wrong about this one btw Garza & Dempster are other pitchers the Brewers might go after....
  3. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1199964/index.htm "But no one would be stunned to see him fielding an offer worth anywhere from $175 million to $200 million next winter. And Hamilton hardly seems interested in giving Texas any kind of discount. He wants whatever the market will bear. "It's more the giving away part," he says. "That's in the forefront of any kind of thought we have about our next contract. The bigger it is, the more we can give away. It's cool to think about all the different ways you can help people by playing baseball. Who couldn't live on a million, two million, three million?" Whether he means for a year or a lifetime, Hamilton won't say. But call it payback or penance: This coming contract is a key reason, he feels, for why he was saved years ago. The whole Josh Hamilton thing was meant to serve as an example, a symbol to the masses of what faith can achieve. And he was meant to use his riches in ways that will be unveiled as soon as he signs on the dotted line."
  4. Where did you see this? The most recent Sports Illustrated article on Hamilton. It was from an issue about 3-4 weeks ago.
  5. Hamilton and his wife are saying they are going to sign with whoever offers the most money. They are going to set up a charitable foundation with a huge portion of the money, so basically whichever team will pay the most will get Josh Hamilton, as the Hamilton family wants to raise the most $$$ for charity that they can....
  6. I've heard stuff like this before. I'm curious, though, is it really that big a difference? If the thought is that there is less of a chance to tweak something like he did Tuesday night, then I can definitely buy that, but if it's just general "wear and tear" that is the concern, I don't quite get it. I mean, sure, a LF has to run around more than a 1B, but it's not THAT much running. I think it is a pretty significant difference in the amount of running and leaping into walls in LF than at 1B. On just about every hit to CF he's running in order to back up the play. On groundballs to 3B & SS, he's running to back up....it adds up, and that is just in the games....then there is all the running outfielders do in preparation/practice, spring training Only somewhat related, but I would argue that Ken Griffey Jr would have the all-time HR record if he had just played 1B his entire career
  7. Ah yes, reading is fundamental. As the kids say "my bad".... OK, if I was Doug Melvin. I would get permission from my owner to overpay a little and get Greinke signed. I would trade for Yunel Escobar. I wouldn't trade Thornburg or Fiers, but I'd be willing to give up a good young pitcher for Escobar. I would trade K-Rod and Hart and Wolf and Morgan and Marcum (if healthy) at the deadline for whatever prospects I could get, especially young pitching talent. I would start Bianchi in 80% of the games the rest of the year if I was unable to trade for Yunel Escobar. I would trade Greinke for a great prospect if I was unable to get him signed. I would move Ryan Braun to 1B in order to save wear and tear on his legs
  8. The list of free agent Shortstops coming available this off-season is extremely underwhelming. Unless the Brewers trade Greinke for Profar or another top prospect SS, then trading for Yunel Escobar sure seems like a better option than just about any other option I've seen or considered, unless there is "inside info" that Brewers scouts know that would lead them to believe that his career is done at the age of 29. This is a guy with a career .284/.357/.749 line who is at least a solid defensive player at SS
  9. I'd try a seance with Ruth, Gehrig and Mantle or get the guy from Back to the Future to bring Hank Aaron back from 1957. Those have about the same chance as Wright, Hamels or Josh Hamilton playing in Milwaukee...at least before they fall off a cliff at age 38. hey, the question wasn't "what, realistically, do you think Mark A would do?", it was "what would you do?"... and if I was a billionaire, I'd buy a World Series Championship for the Brewers....
  10. If I'm Mark A I sign Greinke longterm and then I overpay, whatever it takes and sign Cole Hamels too...then I start printing World Series tickets yes I'd have to go into my own pockets to do that but that is how bad I want a championship for Milwaukee, and the people of Milwaukee would love me & my family for generations for doing that I'd trade/get rid of Morgan, Kottaras, Wolf, K-Rod.... I'd be concerned bigtime about Axford and would instruct Melvin and staff to scour the scouting world for bullpen help and would open up the pocket-books for that, too, if needed Unfortunately the list of free agents for infield help is more than a little underwhelming, but if the Mets are stupid enough to let David Wright go I'd break the bank for him too. I would then trade Aramis for bullpen help and/or a SS prospect I think keeping Greinke and adding David Wright, Cole Hamels and bullpen help would make this team a legit contender. I would look strongly at signing Mike Adams too
  11. That would also really up Greinke's trade value at the deadline, which is pretty cool I know it is easy for me to say because it is not my money, but imho he should go into his pockets if he wants to win a World Series. Isn't the guy a Billionaire? Even if he isn't, say he has $500,000,000 in personal assets. Is it really going to effect his life even in an insignificant way if he has $425 million instead of $500 million? I mean c'mon now I would argue that $175 for me to take my kid and wife to a Brewers game, pay for parking and eats and sit in the Loge Infield seats almost certainly effects my family's budget more than Mark A spending $75-$100 million would effect his family's lifestyle/budget etc
  12. I don't want to get into the specifics of the "who could we trade him for" topic, but essentially I would sign him longterm unless I was absolutely blown away with a trade offer that brought us back a top (and I mean top 5-10 overall) prospect
  13. I will echo others here and say I'd be thrilled if the Brewers got out from under the Aramis contract It almost sounds too good to be true. Really? Would the Dodgers be that stupid and would Melvin & Mark A actually be smart enough to do it?
  14. on the plus side this means we will likely...hopefully...(please God no!) won't be signing Marcum to a big contract
  15. It is still extremely early in his career, but yes Braun is on pace for a HOF career and definitely has HOF talent. Whether Braun becomes as great as Aaron or Mays, that would be a stretch. Braun would need about 6 or 7 40-50 HR seasons in the next 9 seasons to be close. It is possible but not likely.
  16. One thing I can say HiAndTight, is that I sure would love to see Profar in a Brewers uniform, and if all it took was trading Gallardo I'd do it in a heartbeat. But sadly, I don't think Gallardo alone would bring back Profar. The Rangers know what they have in Profar and a team will need to overpay to get him. Profar looks like he is going to be about as good as Mike Trout and better than Bryce Harper. I used to think that Greinke + K-Rod could get us Profar, but not the way K-Rod has looked. It might be more like Greinke + Gallardo (!) to get him.... maybe we can get Olt for Greinke, or Machado from Baltimore for Greinke. I think Mike Fiers has a real chance to be better than Gallardo in a few years, btw
  17. Yes, it really does make me think less of him. Absolutely. That said, he's relatively young and will likely have more postseasons in his career, including probably/maybe this season. So we'll see how he does going forward. Also, Prince at least has had a good postseason series. So its not all bad and the total postseason stats don't fully reflect what he's done. Joe Morgan & Mike Schmidt are great examples of that: their total postseason stats aren't incredible but each had at least one World Series where they were either a WS MVP or just plain lights out great in a WS.... so context is important
  18. I continue to be in the minority in thinking that Block is a very good announcer. I enjoy listening to him
  19. Me too! I love this stuff. Much respect right back to you. And what is fun about all this is that really there is not one definitive right and wrong, it is all just opinion. For all we know Clemente would have batted .388 in Ruth's time Roberto Clemente as the "Ozzie Smith of right-field", I think that is a great way of looking at it, except as you said he batted .317 .... you've given me a fresh perspective on Clemente. One thing I can add, I put a lot of emphasis when comparing players on post-season stats. Some people think that is foolish because it is such a small sample, but I think that how a player performs under the pressure of the playoffs and/or World Series tells us a lot about them (to me at least). Roberto Clemente batted .362 in the World Series with a .900+ OPS.... much much better than Willie Mays' .239 BA .589 OPS in World Series play....hmmmmm
  20. We need 2 or 3 top flight All-Star level pitchers in order to make the playoffs. One starter & 2 relief pitchers. Who is available? (crickets chirping) Maybe we could give up Thornburg, Peralta, Bradley & Gennett for a few months of Cole Hamels (crickets still chirping) The probability of Gallardo pitching like an All-Star Cy Young candidate and Wolf pitching like a 3.25 ERA guy and K-Rod & Axford pitching like, well, K-Rod & Axford is much more of a better bet.... and I'm not betting on that!
  21. Musial hit .330 at age 41 and finished with a career .331 BA, .976 OPS and 159 OPS+ Ted Williams hit .388 at age 38! And finished with a 190 OPS+... Babe Ruth hit .373 at age 36 and .341 at age 37 and finished with a .344 BA, and a 206 OPS+ and of course 3 times as many HR's as Clemente Clemente ranks 161st All-Time in OPS+, tied with Dave Winfield and Greg Luzinski. Getting back to the topic of the thread: Braun currently ranks 46th All-Time in OPS+
  22. Clemente didn't have a decline, his last year was age 37 and then he died in a plane crash. His career stats were .317/.359/.834 Aaron at age 37 hit 47 HR's while batting .327 with a 1.079 OPS. Despite playing until age 42 Aaaron finished with a .305/.374/.928 OPS Does anyone know how to figure out what Aaron's stats were at age 37? Aaron finished with a career 155 OPS+ Mays also had a long decline until age 42 but still finished with a 156 OPS+ and a .941 OPS and a .384 OBP Mantle was much better than Clemente in most offensive categories: OBP (.421 for a career OBP, that is incredible), OPS (.977), HR's, even stolen bases, and of course the amazing 172 career OPS+. I could go on, there is Williams, Ruth, Cobb, Musial....all rank much higher than the great Roberto Clemente. It is not just me: Bill James in his most recent Historical Abstract rates Clemente as the 8th greatest right-fielder of All-Time. His top 8 RF's: 1) Ruth 2) Aaron 3) Frank Robinson 4) Mel Ott 5) Pete Rose 6) Tony Gwynn 7) Reggie Jackson 8) Roberto Clemente I disagree with James ranking Ott that high and personally would rank Clemente higher than Jackson and maybe Rose. Among All Players, Bill James ranks Clemente as the #74 player of All-Time. He ranks Ruth 1st, Mays 3rd, Cobb 5th, Mantle 6th, Williams 7th, Musial 10th, Tris Speaker 11th, Aaron 12th
  23. Same reason they gave all that money to Heath Bell. They are clueless
  24. I agree, they are both 2 of the greatest defensive right-fielders of All-Time. Clemente's power was good but not great. A 130 OPS+. What I'm saying is, for Clemente, the lack of extra power plus lack of walks plus lack of steals is why he ranks a few tiers down from the greatest of All-Time outfielders such as Aaron or Mays or Mantle or Williams
