  1. There is now a thread on Ryan Braun destroying the pitching he sees. One thing that was brought up is that he hits in front of Fielder. Before Braun was called up, Hardy was hitting in front of Fielder, and he had many/most of his homeruns. I wonder what the place-before-Fielder batting statistics are this year. Are they better than Fielder himself? I also wonder how that compares to people hitting before, say, Pujols or Alex Rodriguez or Barry Bonds. If hitting in front of Fielder gives such benefit, maybe it should be someone like Counsell or the pitcher (?) In other words, how much of a hitter does a person have to be to benefit significantly from batting in front of a great batter? Regardless of that question, the effect of Fielder's presence on Hardy's and now Braun's statistics are one more feather in his MVP cap. I'm at work so can't do all the statistics. Thanks in advance to whoever does them.
  2. I only read page 4 of this thread so far, so I'm sure this is a repeat of other postings, but holy cow that lineup is devastating. If we wouldn't have already won 4 of 5 games, I would say this would mark the start of a nice little run ... I'm sorry for whoever pitches LH against the Brewers when all of these players are available. On the other hand, games that I'm so excited about like this one usually end up being a bit of a letdown. My guess is that Gallardo will be a little bit too fired up to start the game. I think the Brewers will win if he is able to settle himself and get through 5-6 innings.
  3. Wow, thanks for answering in such depth. It's hard to know what to make of players just based on boxscores and season statistics. It sounds like I should be paying a little more attention to Cain, Ford, and Chapman.
  4. What might happen with the glut of A/A+/AA outfielders was discussed in the June transactions page. Then other transactions occurred, and the conversation turned to something else. I'm yearning for more opinions... My questions are: Where do people belong this year? When might they get to Milwaukee/major leagues and contribute? What might their contributions be? I'd love to hear from people who follow the minor leagues. My sense is that there are a number of people in A+ and A that belong a half-step to a step higher than they are now positioned. Meanwhile, the high minors/major league bench is replete with low-ceiling prospects. Maybe it's time to challenge Katin and Moss at AAA, which would decrease playing time or roster positions for AAA veterans and to allow some of the others to move up into the vacated spots. These are my best guesses about minor league outfielders in the system, from players I am most eager to check in box scores on downward. I am basing my rankings mostly on what I get from this site. Even with them being advanced, it seems to me that we have 5 or so prospects that could be at AA right now (see below.) La Porta (now at A / could be at AA at the end of this year / on Brewers by late 2008 / ceiling as a 2nd best OF on a contending team) -- Maybe he could force his way up the ladder quickly? Gillespie (A+/AA/2009/#3 OF) -- not a great start to this year but still an All-Star and an All-Star star. Brantley (AA/AA/late 2008/#2 OF) -- I sense good things from him and even helping the Brewers in the next 1.5 to 2 years. Gwynn but better! Cain (A+/AA/2009/#1 OF) -- sounds like he might be a CF candidate? I just know that people are very high on him Ford (A+/A+/2010/#4 OF) -- fast with a little power. One of the people that seems to be labeled "Gwynn, but better" Gamel (AA/AA/2009/#3 OF) still might end up in the outfield, too. Fermaint (A/A+/late 2010/#3 OF) -- struggles at A+ but appears to be dominant at A Katin (AA/AAA/mid-2008/#3 OF) -- he's got a strong bat. Could he be Jenkins' replacement soon? Chapman (A/A/2011?/#5 OF) -- he's still pretty young, I think. He seems to have been outshined by others this year at WV but that doesn't mean that he's not a prospect, right? Moss (AA/AAA/late 2008/#4 OF) -- people used to be very high on him. I think Huntsville must be a terrible place to hit. Again, Gwynn, but better! Anderson (AAA/AAA/#6-7 OF) -- we saw him last year for a bit. He continues to struggle in AAA but he dominated AA briefly when sent back. Alonso, LaFave, Caufield (A) -- their statistics look amazing. I don't really know their stories, though. I'm not including outfielders/people who can play the outfield in AAA include Nix, C Thomas, Rottino, Macias, Dillon, Crabbe.
  5. 2003 was very exciting in terms of following minor league results. The results were not unexpected that year, though. There were big prospects to follow, and I remember checking this site all through winter 2002-03 to get any information I could about the minor league players. I was not expecting the teams to do so well this year. I thought Brantley might be good and the Brevard County team would probably be great, but I had no idea about the Power. If I remember correctly, articles and posters seemed to have fairly low expectations for them -- not enough power, pitching uncertainty, ? reliance on young players. But they just exploded. Until this year's minor league season, I felt like Melvin, Zd et al had breathed some life into the Brewers that might give us 3-5 years of excitement. Now, like was said earlier, I am more hopeful of a long string of major league success. With only one high pick this year, this could have marked the beginning of the end of this exciting run. I've got faith that the final DFE class will allow us to continue to compete with organizations that may have had 4-11 picks before we had our second one.
  6. "It hit him in what would amount to his massive right triceps." --- Jim Powell That's funny because Fielder is ok. I now dislike the Pirates.

  8. That would give the Brewers the best #1-8 starting pitching since 1982 or 1983 if not ever. My memory for back-of-rotation guys ends at 1989 or so. It's hard not to be excited already for a team that should win more than it loses. But I'm not sold on the Brewers doing more than competing in September at this point. I wonder what Melvin is able to turn Mench/Jenkins/Clark/Turnbow into... Lieber or another proven starting pitcher would be nice. So would solid relief pitching or a great middle-infield or 3B prospect -- one who is certain to be able to play defense. When does Melvin and family return from Italy?

  10. The most popular baby names for 2005: boys--Bill Hall. girls--Bill Hall. Bill Hall taught Dr. J to dunk. He taught Mark Spitz to swim. He taught chickens to lay eggs. Bill Hall donated to Herbert Hoover a toenail he broke kicking Hitler's buttocks. Now the Colorado River stops somewhere in Nevada. Bill Hall invented the internet. A rabbi, a priest, and Bill Hall walk into a bar. You know the rest.
  11. It's been a long, a long time coming, but I know a change gon' come. Yes it will. (That's Sam Cooke too)
  12. Is it too late to call up Hart/Cruz to pinch hit for magruder? This team will be very exciting in September. Now it's just frustrating.
  13. There have been several games in the past week where, with GameCast malfunctioning (not today thankfully) and no access to netradio at work, that this is the only way to get play-by-play information. I appreciate the play-by-play, if someone is doing it. Maybe if anyone feels like doing it they can do it spring training style with one edited post? Brian, your site seems to be useful in more ways than you realize. thanks, future amazon book purchaser and ez supporter, randybreuerfan
  14. Maybe this will be magruder's last chance to show his wares as the team's fourth outfielder... If he can't be trusted to contribute anything on the days he gives Jenkins a rest, it's time to bring up somebody who can.
  15. Hey, I was talking About Rickie Weeks' at bat. My gamecast is slow. That next double play sounds like double happiness To me. Now some runs!
  16. double happiness? No, a double play grounder, Sad surprise for me.
  17. jenkins with double off of a lefty, no less. Is it a full moon?
  18. Hardy at SS-- I like this. 2 J's needs more Chances to double.
  19. I admit, I only follow the Brewers. That given, I can't imagine that anyone has meant more to their team this year than Overbay to the Brewers. Besides Bonds. If Overbay had hit like had been expected--I was just browsing through the preseason predictions posts--this team would be down in Pittsburgh territory right now. At least I haven't heard Uecker call him by the wrong name for a couple of weeks. Who knows what will happen after the All-Star Break. But should this crazy season continue as it's started, the Brewers have a solid candidate for MVP.
