Helena Brewers 5, Grand Junction Rockies 6 Box Score A heartbreaking loss here to extend my LR career to 0-5. Taylor wall got the start for the Brewers and was less than inspiring - 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K. He gave up a home run and walked too many, but I do like the Ks. Joel Pierce pitched a nice inning of relief (1 H, 1 K), and the Brewers took a 1 run lead into the 9th due to 3 really nice innings by Martin Viramontes. Martin allowed a leadoff double and got a sacrifice out before he was lifted for Tyler Magnum. Magnum promptly allows a single, blowing the save. A passed ball and an intentional walk later, the winning run is at 3rd, then is singled home by Julian Yan. Helena loses a stunner. Offensively, the Toddler Brewers weren't too shabby. Chris McFarland, who is quickly moving to nickname status, lead the charge with a 3 run home run and a single in 4 trips to the plate. He kicked in a stolen base in his 3rd straight game as well. Yonki Hernandez, who will never need a nickname, walked twice, singled twice, and scored a run in a great evening for him, though he was caught stealing. The Helena Brewers played baseball today, so Adam Giacalone got a hit. He's now up to .364 for the year, which is just bananas. On the not so bright side, Michael Reed went 0-4 with a silver sombrero. Play By Play WARNING: Not for the faint of heart. Helena Top of the 3rd Michael Turay doubles (7) on a fly ball to left fielder Jeffrey Popick. Kevin Berard singles on a bunt ground ball to first baseman Ben Waldrip. Michael Turay to 3rd. With Yonki Hernandez batting, passed ball by Michael Ramirez, Michael Turay scores. Kevin Berard to 2nd. Yonki Hernandez singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Jayson Aquino. Kevin Berard to 3rd. Christopher McFarland homers (3) on a fly ball to right field. Kevin Berard scores. Yonki Hernandez scores. Alfredo Rodriguez grounds out, shortstop Matt Wessinger to first baseman Ben Waldrip. Adam Giacalone singles on a ground ball to right fielder Julian Yan. With Emmanuel Quiles batting, Adam Giacalone caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Michael Ramirez to second baseman Juan Ciriaco. Emmanuel Quiles flies out to right fielder Julian Yan. Grand Junction Bottom of the 9th Matt Wessinger doubles (7) on a line drive to left fielder Yonki Hernandez. David Dahl flies out to left fielder Yonki Hernandez. Matt Wessinger to 3rd. Pitching Change: Taylor Mangum replaces Martin Viramontes. Ashley Graeter singles on a fly ball to right fielder Raul Mondesi. Matt Wessinger scores. With Jeffrey Popick batting, passed ball by Emmanuel Quiles, Ashley Graeter to 3rd. Taylor Mangum intentionally walks Jeffrey Popick. Julian Yan singles on a line drive to left fielder Yonki Hernandez. Ashley Graeter scores. Jeffrey Popick to 2nd.

AZL Dodgers 4, AZL Brewers 1 AZL Brewers Box Score My link reporting losing streak continues - now 0-4 between the rookie ball teams. Zachary Quintana got the start for the Baby Crew and had a fairly solid outing. 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 2, BB, 2 K, 9/5 GB/FB. He had given up no runs through 5, but a home run in the 6th sealed the deal for the Dodgers, as the Brewers just didn't have it offensively tonight. Daniel Keller went the final 2 IP, and, in Daniel Keller style, allowed a run. Clint Coulter lead the way offensively, going 1-2 with an RBI and a pair of walks, though he was caught stealing. His defense might still have some questions, but no one is doubting his approach at the plate, especially for a young guy. I think it's time to start getting excited about his debut. Dionis Hinojosa (1-4, SB), managed to make his only trip on base count, as he stole a base and the only good-guy run of the game on Coulter's knock. Beyond that, there wasn't a whole lot going on offensively - the Brewers mustered only 6 total hits and 1 XBH (a double by Jose Sermo) and while the 5 waks is nice to see, there just wasn't enough firepower to get guys across the plate tonight. AZL Brewers Recap Here's the damage on Quintana: AZL Dodgers Bottom of the 6th Jacob Scavuzzo doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. With Stefan Jarrin batting, wild pitch by Zachary Quintana, Jacob Scavuzzo to 3rd. Stefan Jarrin walks. Jesmuel Valentin grounds into a force out, second baseman Jose Sermo to shortstop Angel Ortega. Jacob Scavuzzo scores. Stefan Jarrin out at 2nd. Jesmuel Valentin to 1st. Paul Hoenecke homers (4) on a fly ball to right field. Jesmuel Valentin scores. Alex Santana grounds out, third baseman Jalen Harris to first baseman Alan Sharkey. Noel Cuevas flies out to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Coulter's (and the AZL's only) RBI: AZL Brewers Top of the 5th Dionis Hinojosa singles on a line drive to center fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. Edgardo Rivera grounds out to first baseman Paul Hoenecke. Dionis Hinojosa to 2nd. With Jose Sermo batting, Dionis Hinojosa steals (4) 3rd base. Jose Sermo walks. Clint Coulter singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jesmuel Valentin. Dionis Hinojosa scores. Jose Sermo to 2nd. With Jose Pena batting, Clint Coulter caught stealing 2nd base, catcher John Cannon to second baseman Stefan Jarrin. Jose Pena strikes out swinging.

Final: Great Falls Voyagers 11, Helena Brewers 3 Helena Brewers Box Score The Brewers' 11th round pick this year, Preston Gainey got the start for the Toddler Brewers and immediately put the H-Crew behind the 8 ball. Great Falls scored 1 run in each of the first 3 innings and 5 in the fourth before the Brewers pulled Gainey. His final line: 3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R (7 ER), 2 BB, 4 K. Michael Schaub was next in line, and he surrendered an additional 3 runs over the next 2.1 IP, including a HR. While the game was basically over at this point, you have to give credit to the team of Joel Pierce, Michael Francisco, and Elliott Glynn, who combined to throw 3 one hit innings with 3 Ks to close the game out. The Toddler Brewers finally broke their scoreless streak, tacking up 3 runs in the 3rd, but the Voyagers buried them in the top of the 4th with a 5-spot. Chris McFarland continues to just hit like a crazy person. He went 2 for 5, scored a run, batted in another, and managed to steal a base for the second straight game. Adam Giacalone did his job too - he went 2-4 and batted in a run. He's batting an outrageous .367 on the year and looks to be set to start next year in full season ball. Michael Reed went 1-3 with a walk, and Kevin Eshleman had 2 hits (1 double) to round out some of the offensive contributors. Hopefully the offense can get rolling, in particular the bottom of the order needs to get it going - the 5th through 9th hitters from last night are hitting .223, .244, .210, .163, and .145 on the year. Ouch. Helena Brewers Play By Play This 3-run effort by Helena snapped the streak and made it a new ballgame. Helena Bottom of the 3rd Paul Eshleman singles on a ground ball to right fielder Yoandy Barroso. Kevin Berard singles on a ground ball to shortstop Zachary Voight, deflected by third baseman Tyler Williams. Paul Eshleman to 2nd. Ruben Ozuna out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Ryan Bollinger to first baseman Brent Tanner. Paul Eshleman to 3rd. Kevin Berard to 2nd. With Christopher McFarland batting, wild pitch by Ryan Bollinger, Paul Eshleman scores. Kevin Berard to 3rd. Christopher McFarland singles on a ground ball to left fielder Michael Johnson. Kevin Berard scores. Alfredo Rodriguez reaches on a force attempt, throwing error by third baseman Tyler Williams. Christopher McFarland to 3rd. Adam Giacalone singles on a line drive to right fielder Yoandy Barroso. Christopher McFarland scores. Alfredo Rodriguez to 2nd. Emmanuel Quiles flies out to center fielder Daurys Mercedes. With Michael Reed batting, Alfredo Rodriguez caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Zachary Fisher to third baseman Tyler Williams. The Toddler White Sox respond with a 5 run top of the 4th. Great Falls Top of the 4th Tyler Williams called out on strikes. Dustin Hayes triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Michael Reed. Daurys Mercedes strikes out swinging. Michael Johnson walks. Justin Jirschele singles on a ground ball to second baseman Christopher McFarland. Dustin Hayes scores. Justin Jirschele to 2nd. Michael Johnson advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by second baseman Christopher McFarland. Yoandy Barroso singles on a ground ball to right fielder Raul Mondesi. Michael Johnson scores. Justin Jirschele scores. With Brent Tanner batting, wild pitch by Preston Gainey, Yoandy Barroso to 2nd. Brent Tanner doubles (10) on a fly ball to center fielder Michael Reed. Yoandy Barroso scores. Pitching Change: Michael Schaub replaces Preston Gainey. Zachary Fisher walks. Zachary Voight singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael Reed. Brent Tanner scores. Zachary Fisher to 3rd. Tyler Williams strikes out swinging. -

Final: AZL Dodgers 6, AZL Brewers 5 AZL Brewers Box Score Josh Butler got the start for the Baby Brewers on his way back to AAA Nashville. He went 2 perfect innings and threw in a strikeout. The meat of the game was pitched by Austin Hall, who allowed 4 earned runs on 4 hits (including a HR by Leo Rodriguez, the mini-Dodgers' 9th hitter). Hall also struck out two and walked one. Given that he's nearly 24 years old, a 5.20 career ERA is pretty disappointing. Austin Blaski pitched a clean 7th and Eduard Reyes allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in the 8th and the 9th. The Brewers managed to get some nice offensive performances. Bonus baby Jose Pena lead the way with a triple and a tater in five trips to the plate. Jose Sermo also chipped in a dinger. For those of you following some of the Brewers' highly ranked draft picks, Clint Coulter went 1-5 and Edgardo Rivera went 2-5 with an RBI. Yadiel Rivera clone Angel Ortega went 1-4, but also committed his 12th error - it looks like he still has to work on making the routine play. AZL Brewers Play By Play The 5th produced 4 of the AZL Crew's 5 runs. AZL Brewers Bottom of the 5th Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to third baseman Alex Santana. Dionis Hinojosa strikes out swinging. With Edgardo Rivera batting, wild pitch by Victor Araujo, Angel Ortega to 2nd. Edgardo Rivera singles on a ground ball to left fielder Cory Embree. Angel Ortega scores. Edgardo Rivera out at 2nd on the throw, left fielder Cory Embree to third baseman Alex Santana to second baseman Leo Rodriguez. Jose Sermo homers (4) on a fly ball to left field. Clint Coulter singles on a soft ground ball to pitcher Victor Araujo. Jose Pena homers (5) on a fly ball to left field. Clint Coulter scores. Dustin Houle pops out to second baseman Leo Rodriguez. The Dodgers won the game with 2 runs in the 8th. AZL Dodgers Top of the 8th Pitching Change: Eduard Reyes replaces Austin Blaski. Jesmuel Valentin reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Jose Sermo. Paul Hoenecke singles on a line drive to center fielder Edgardo Rivera. Jesmuel Valentin to 3rd. Alex Santana strikes out swinging. Andrew Edge hit by pitch. Paul Hoenecke to 2nd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Gregory Pena replaces Andrew Edge. John Sgromolo singles on a line drive to center fielder Edgardo Rivera. Jesmuel Valentin scores. Paul Hoenecke scores. Gregory Pena out at 3rd on the throw, center fielder Edgardo Rivera to catcher Clint Coulter to second baseman Jose Sermo. Cory Embree pops out to first baseman Alan Sharkey. -
Final: Great Falls White Sox 3, Helena Brewers 0 Helena Brewers Box Score Well, not the way I was hoping to get into the Link Report - the Brewers' offense was completely overpowered by the Voyagers today. They only mustered 4 hits all night, but solid pitching kept them in the game most of the way. Tyler Wagner started off, and was quite good. He went 5 IP allowing 2 runs (both earned) with 6 strike outs to 2 walks. He's now put together two solid starts in a row, after starting his career off pretty abysmally. Brent Suter and Connor Whalen went the rest of the way - Suter went 3 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, and allowed an unearned run while Whalen struck out the side and walked one in the 9th. If you are looking for positives from this game, the pitching did a very nice job, particularly in the strikeout department. Young guys missing bats is always a good thing. Offensively, there isn't really that much to talk about. Chris McFarland and Adam Giacalone each managed to get on base twice with a single and a walk. McFarland probably had the best night of anyone though, since he chipped in a steal to boot. Michael Reed went hitless, but walked twice. The Brewers put together potential scoring opportunities in only 2 innings, and squandered them both. Billy Beane would not have been happy with the H-Crew today, as Andrez Martinez and Michael Turay each were caught stealing. Helena Brewers Play By Play The only two chances: Helena Brewers Bottom of the 4th Christopher McFarland grounds out, pitcher Brandon Parrent to first baseman Brent Tanner. Alfredo Rodriguez reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Thomas McCarthy. With Adam Giacalone batting, wild pitch by Brandon Parrent, Alfredo Rodriguez to 2nd. Adam Giacalone grounds out, second baseman Micah Johnson to first baseman Brent Tanner. Alfredo Rodriguez to 3rd. Emmanuel Quiles flies out to right fielder Yoandy Barroso. Helena Brewers Bottom of the 5th Michael Reed walks. Michael Turay walks. Michael Reed to 2nd. Raul Mondesi singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Brandon Parrent. Michael Reed to 3rd. Michael Turay to 2nd. Andres Martinez called out on strikes. Ruben Ozuna grounds into a double play, shortstop Bradley Salgado to second baseman Micah Johnson to first baseman Brent Tanner. Raul Mondesi out at 2nd.

Rams' Top 50 Brewers Prospects
ramssuperbowl1999 replied to ramssuperbowl1999's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
To everyone about the 20-30 HRs comment - the comment said 20-30 annually. That means, every year. If a fluke happens, he wins a starting job somehow, and has the season of his life, it's possible. But not yearly. And honestly, even in one year is unlikely, simply because no serious MLB team is going to start him. The number of legitimate sluggers that have gone on to become above average regulars at 26 or above is slim. Jose Bautista, David Freese, and...anyone else got the rest of this list? -

Rams' Top 50 Brewers Prospects
ramssuperbowl1999 replied to ramssuperbowl1999's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I do appreciate anyone taking the time to put together a list like this. I think you are going to get a lot of push back from this community on Davis since he is just performing like no other at this point. If his bat continues to be as good as it has been, I would take him as a below average RF, however, before I would do that, I would move Braun to RF and put Davis in LF. Khris Davis isn't moving Ryan Braun anywhere. The expectations for Davis on here are insane - "replacing Corey Hart's offense" and "hitting 20-30 HRs annually". Those are the offensive numbers that would make him a top 50 or top 25 prospect given how close he is the majors. Hell, those are the power potential numbers that I've seen on Wil Myers (2nd or 3rd on prospect lists overall). Not to be a jerk, but get real. I realized I was going to get flack for this rating - BF has, historically, loved production. And I see why. You follow a guy's box score every single day for a few years and you want to believe he's going to be a stud. Just like this board thought Aumary Rivas was going to be a stud. Every single scouting report out there tells you one thing - the consensus is this guy's swing is too long to hit at the major league level in any significant way. And his size calls into question his natural power ability. I think he'll make the big leagues and be a useful bench bat, but this is exactly the type of player that a team will go and get a free agent rather than give him a big league job. -
It is rather important that the games are reported on the night of, so as long you can commit to that, I see no reason not to give you a shot. Just to be clear, I need someone for 5 nights (fri-tues) to cover the Brevard County and Helena games. Covering Maryvale would be a big bonus as well. Obviously, the format can be mimicked from previous link reports. Feel free to email me or any of the other link reporters wit questions. So what do you say Rams? You in? My schedule usually puts me to bed fairly early and up fairly early, which would mean I'm probably the best bet to do either of the rookie ball leagues the next day (at like 7 AM). Does that work?

Rams' Top 50 Brewers Prospects
ramssuperbowl1999 replied to ramssuperbowl1999's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I have a meeting in 8 minutes, so this might be abbreviated. Thanks for the compliment! On to Davis - 1. I don't ever see him starting for Milwaukee. His position is essentially LF or 1B. Let's dismiss LF outright. Is he a big league 1B? His swing is long, we have no idea how his defense is, most people expect him to strike out a ton in the big leagues, and right now he's probably around 4th on the depth chart, at least IMO (Hart, Gamel, Morris - and that doesn't even count Aramis Ramirez). 2. He's short and right handed. If he was a tall lefty, you could use him off the bench for some pop. His height gives questions to how the swing is going to translate in terms of his raw power (and the fact that he's short with a long swing is a very ominous combination). 3. He's not a good defender. He is limited to the 2 easiest positions in the diamond, he has no 1B experience, and he's not good enough for RF, which means he probably not that good in LF. This, to me, adds up to a guy who won't hit enough to play 1B, doesn't have a huge niche off the bench, and can't play anywhere else. I hope he proves me wrong, and he already has to an extent, but I don't see an impact MLB player. If you wanted to argue Tyler Wagner over him, fine - Wagner might be too high anyway. But give me an impact reliever like Scarpetta or Manzanillo, a bounce-back starter like Bucci or Rogers, or a useful defensive replacement with OBP potential like Schafer 10 times out of 10. -
Rams' Top 50 Brewers Prospects
ramssuperbowl1999 replied to ramssuperbowl1999's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Honestly, it is my list. I base alot of it on the scouting community, as I've only seen a few guys in person, but my personal feeling on a prospect (or a certain type of prospect) are definitely going to change the list. So, going down the line (except for Davis, who gets his own post since everyone is unhappy with his ranking): 1. Roache - I love his tools and he was an outrageously productive college player. I think you could argue dropping him a few spots, but I think his ability to not just make the big leagues, but anchor a lineup, puts him in a class above guys like Gennett. If you argued Morris over him, I wouldn't second guess you. I'd even think Pena and Gagnon have cases, since they are more advanced and have some ceiling, but I don't know how you drop him much. 2. Coulter - A little bit of projection on my part. I love the fact that he's hitting (and WALKING, oh my dear lord that OBP is sexy) despite not having much full time baseball experience. I also love his general athleticism. I'm going to rank him as a catcher, because I think a good deal of his problems are just lack of reps. The past ball thing isn't that much of an issue to me - he was a wrestler, and a good one - so I know he has good lateral ability and some footwork. He just needs practice. 3. OBP comment - I LOVE OBP. I mention walk rates in these writeups about a billion times. For me, it is the thing that I can count on for position players the most. It's what keeps Hunter Morris out of the top 5, Scooter Gennett out of the top 10, it got Clint Coulter in the top 5, etc. I'm very SABR oriented, but rely on "traditional" tools (bat, defense, fastball velocity, etc.) to help determine ceilings. I then take into account position quite heavily - a very SABR idea (notice how highly ranked catchers and SSs are, and notice how much more patient I am with them). Hope that helps. -

I'm assuming you mean Jesus Sanchez. He just missed (I believe I had him in my top 50 pre-Greinke trade). Here's why: 1. I don't know how good his stuff is. I've heard high-80's low 90's fastball and a good mix of pitches. That's fine and dandy, but relievers, at least for me, better be at least 90 with the fastball. 2. He doesn't miss bats at an elite rate. A guy like Alan Williams (who wasn't exactly super high on the list either) has nice stuff and it shows - he's striking out more than a guy per inning. Sanchez keeps the walks down, which is definitely good, but does he have putaway stuff? And, at the end of a list like this, you could rank them almost however. You want to put him over Kentrail Davis? I don't think anyone is going to call you nuts. Yes, I meant Sanchez. At what point does performance outweigh radar gun readings? Carlos Villanueva has now logged 7 years in the majors. He never ranked high on prospect lists for the very reasons you cite for Sanchez, a high 80's-low 90's fastball. Then there's the "missing bats" argument. Hello Taylor Jungmann. With all due respect to Alan Williams, Sanchez has had success facing more advanced hitters. While I appreciate your list and the work you put in, it seems to me more a ranking of measurable tools in the system than it is a list of actual predictions of success. Some tools can't be measured. Command for a pitcher is one of those, and it usually determines success and failure. Just because you can point out exceptions to the rule in regards to velocity, doesn't mean you should ignore it. Jesus Sanchez might be a good reliever, but he would have to beat the odds to do so. The vast majority of relievers in baseball throw substantially harder than high-80's, and almost all of the ones who don't are either left-handed or have considerable major league experience. I'm not ranking how people are performing in the minor leagues. I'm ranking how I project them to perform in the major leagues. Sanchez could be a middle relief type, and who knows, he might make me look silly. But the odds say I'm right. -

Thanks a bunch! Me too. I think I ranked Coulter and Taylor aggressively on this list because of how much potential they have. I originally had Arcia 7th going into the year (I believe), and it's not so much that the injury knocked him down as there are just so many new players in the system (Pena, Hellweg, Coulter, Roache, Segura, and Taylor) AND you had some nice seasons from Nelson and Morris. That's what made him drop. I guess my question is, which guys would you have over Peralta/Nelson? Personally, and I bet everyone got this impression from my list - I love stuff when I rank pitchers. I am a FB whore - if you have a good fastball, you get on this list. If you have a very good fastball, I will be patient with you. The biggest thing Nelson and Peralta have going for them is their FB - each is in the mid-90's and has movement. They can get swings and misses, AND ground balls with them. That's a wicked combination. For what it's worth, I think you could rank the guys 4th through 8th in almost whatever order you want. Thanks for 4. I am higher on Pena and Hellweg than Jungmann, but it's hard to ignore the communities' thoughts on Jungmann. He's held his own in High A, which is good. I just am worried about the strikeouts. I just don't see Khris Davis as an impact MLB player. He's a good bet to make it, but will he actually contribute in an impactful way? I'm pretty convinced there is a bullpen in here. Between any extra starters, the guys you mentioned, Rogers, Scarpetta, Goforth, Williams, etc. etc. As far as guys like Schafer and Heckathorn, I think they are good bets to be big leaguers. But I don't see them ever being much more than up-and-down guys. That hurts their stock. (If you can't tell, I love upside.) I agree with Gennett. He keeps hitting, but I don't know if he can do anything else. I agree on Thornburg, the more he can use the bottom of the zone effectively, the better he will be. No one is going to question his raw stuff. And thanks! -

Khris Davis could be with the Brewers next week, but will he do anything of note if he was up? The answer to that is clearly no. Wagner's stuff gives him a late inning reliever ceiling, and Brewer fans have found out how valuable that is this season. Khris Davis, on a good team, doesn't get more than 50 PA's a year in his prime. He's hitting well in the minor leagues, but he's nothing more than a bench bat or a platoon type guy (on a bad team). Give me the guy who might never make it, but could be impactful if he does.
