  1. The Cards hired a stathead to do numbers for them...in part based on the crappy performance of the previous scouting group in the draft. So they're as 'Moneyball' as it comes now, at least regarding the draft.
  2. I'm guessing that as in the past, they'll announce a bunch all at once...some have probably already signed but just not been announced. Others are still playing, etc...but I don't think they'll have to forfeit any games for lack of players...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. From a draft article... "I think there was this perception that Jack and I get in a room and fight over high school and college (players)," said Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, whose Texas Rangers clubs in the 1990s tended toward college draft crops. "I have to tell you that that's somewhat comical." Ahem. No mention of the karate kick?
  4. IIRC, Sockalexis was the original Cleveland Indian, and the team was renamed in his honor.
  5. The Indiana shortstop is supposed to be a tough sign...maybe also Chapman will be tough... The canadian RHP with the french name was expected to go in the top 10 rounds, and might not sign, or might DFE. It's likely that a few of the guys in the 11-18 range will go to two year schools as DFEs.
  6. Honestly, it's absolutely silly to rate the draft after the first day. (It's a lot of fun, of course...and I would never say don't do it...just recognize that it's silly.) But if you look back at Baseball America's draft ratings, after they know who's signed and who hasn't, they are often 180* wrong by a year later. Detroit supposedly had the best draft in the game a couple years back...two years later that draft had a grade of "C" in the prospect handbook. By next year, that grade might be a D, or a B+, depending on what happens to the two or three players who are still prospects.
  7. Pitchers are scary, and we've got a lot of them in this draft. It's very possible that we get nothing for our efforts...they all blow out. Still, the system is in an enviable position, where there's enough depth that a lot of high-risk/high-reward picks might make some sense. That's been the Braves' philosophy for a while now, and they have done reasonably well...including the use of Wainright to get JD Drew. Of course, there's two ways to evaluate the draft...pick by pick, see who's chosen vs. who's on the board, look at tools, performance, whatever your poison...or you can look at the global trends....high picks on HS arms, not many middle IF. It's very possible that colby can see a B looking at the details and that greg can see a D looking at the trends...but both points of view may well be incomplete. The baseball draft is such a crapshoot, they might both be right as well. In some cases, one guy can make a draft worthwhile...and it could be Salome or some DFE, or a risky HS pitcher. Bottom line for me: I used to get pretty worked up about the draft. For a lot of reasons, I just watch out of the corner of my eye now, with interest, but without much excitement or rancor. It'll be fun to watch these guys, whatever comes...and of course it may be that we've got our own Beckett, or just a bunch of Tyrone Hills. In a completely unrelated thought, I think it's very cool that the second rounder is named 'Yo'
  8. Ain't he a little french sounding? It's almost treasonous, I tell ya...
  9. Well, 14 is a fringe draft...they're into the DFE and roster guys now. Presumably he'll sign and anchor the batting order for Helena...but he'll have to hit his way up the ladder. As of today, they all have a chance to succeed.
  10. One of the Packers' draftees was described on a site as having a 'nice bubble.' Brings to mind the strip poker scene described as being in the new David Sedaris book...
  11. Well, it's one thing to have that trouble at age 18...still, we'd be very lucky if he turned out as good as Brady Clark.
  12. Rumor has it that Melvin ordered Yost to play a few games of strat-o-matic against Gord Ash on Monday...he's trying out some of the newfangled things he learned...varying the batting order, etc.
  13. The OBPs in that Expos lineup are simply astonishing: .287 .324 .299 .291 .209 .308 .294 .211 .154 That's the kind of lineup perfectly set up for a no-hitter or perfect game...they make outs like crazy.
  14. At one time, Farnsworth was rumored to be part of the Vina trade. Instead we got Eli Alfonzo. But now the circle has closed...
  15. ISTR that the Dodgers had something similar for a while...Park from Korea, Nomo from Japan, Valdes from Mexico, Astacio or Ramon Martinez from the DR, and Candiotti or Dreifort from the US.
  16. This is the new Milwaukee Brewers my friend.....we live in a world where 2 Brewer all-star representatives is a legitimate possibility As opposed to the last two years? I just checked in a bit ago, and thought that Sheets' line was a typo. Simply astonishing...I'm jealous of those who were there in person.
  17. If you don't trust eqa, use Al's favorite tool...OXS times PA. Currently Counsell's OXS is...wait for it...0.092, while Hall is 0.131. Over Counsell's 110 or so PA, that's about a four run difference. That's true even with that low OBP from Hall.
  18. Current eqa from baseballprospectus...please note that this metric puts OBP and SLG in their proper relation: hall .250 counsell .223 Counsell's number looks to be exactly replacement level...Hall's is just over the major league average for all shortstops (.249)...he would be almost 4 runs above replacement level if you project his current rate stats to this portion of the season...something like a 20 run difference over the season? You can repeatedly insist that Counsell's OBP is better...and it's true, but that's simply not the most relevant measure of offensive value. Counsell's offense is probably a bit worse than what I would have projected, but he's also in the phase of his career where steep declines are common.
  19. The argument about Hall being the younger player, and being a part of the team's plans down the line is a falsehood, and virtually everyone who's said it knows that. The shortstop of the future for this team is J.J. Hardy. Hall is definitely younger. The future is yet to be determined, and there's no reason that Hall can't play a role in it, as a utility player, as a third baseman, or even as trade bait. I think it's incorrect to call this a falsehood and speculate about what others do and do not know...it's also not very nice IMO. Maybe that's just me. To take this argument to its logical conclusion, hey, there's no reason we should try to develop Ginter, Spivey, or Overbay, since they occupy the same positions as the other two Big Three prospects. Let's release those guys or bury them on the bench and find some scrappy wisconsin natives. Aside from this, we seem to have two points, masquerading as three: counsell has a better OBP, and he makes fewer outs because has a better OBP, and he makes fewer errors.
  20. CBS sportsline is shwing Burba warming up. Shwing? And I thought I got excitied about baseball...
  21. I'm kind of surprised Ted Stevens doesn't show up in those lyrics somewhere....
  22. I think you're seeing the violence inherent in the system.
  23. Peavey, you're such a dumbass. Wow, that's classy. This guy's a moderator? Seriously, folks, let's get a little perspective here.
