  1. In the grand tradition of Opdyke and Belcher, they should pick a HS catcher who will fail at defense...
  2. From BA draft blog: 3:16 PM: Brewers Stay On Inman by Will Kimmey The Brewers and Braves were among the few teams that didn't shy away from Tunstall High righthander Will Inman after he sat in the mid-80s at Virginia's Commonwealth Games last summer. But the state's career strikeouts leader bumped his velocity up to the low-90s as a senior and Milwaukee nabbed him in the third round. He'll now have to decide between pro ball and a college commitment to Auburn.
  3. A juco player who wasn?t under control was Chipola 3B Matt Gamel (34), who proved to be one of the best hitters in the state at any level. A juco all-American, Gamel has a short, quick lefthanded swing that he repeats. He?s also considered a solid defender at third base with good enough hands and arm strength for the position. Committed to Louisiana-Monroe, he should go in the first 10 rounds. 34th in a not-so-strong FLA class...apparently Jack Z doesn't read BA. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  4. Some decent HS infielders available, like Putnam or Reece Havens.
  5. Steitz and Thomas were pretty highly rated... But it is definitely one of those Jack Z picks that make you go, huh? Some of those have worked out OK, but then there's, say, Josh Murray...
  6. Dodgers with a Moneyball pick in Pedroza? That's a lot higher than scouts would have him...he's not big or toolsy though he was the best bat for CSUF this year.
  7. Angels with some interesting picks...Sean O'Sullivan was thought a 1st rounder at one point.
  8. BA says: RHP Will Inman (16), Thompson's teammate at Tunstall High in Danville, actually has enjoyed a more decorated prep career. He broke the state's career strikeout record, passing 500 as a senior. His stocky build at 6 feet, 205 pounds doesn't portend the same projection scouts as Thompson, and many stopped following him because he failed to break 90 mph at the 2004 Commonwealth Games and his delivery showed some effort. That could be a mistake, because Inman hit 90-92 mph regularly as a senior, with his coach saying he might have been worn down last summer following a long postseason run. Inman's curveball isn?t a true power pitch, but generates a lot of swings and misses. He also throws a splitter and a changeup, and will use any of the four offerings in any count.
  9. Teagarden screams Mike Matheny to me...and while Matheny has had a nice career, I guess I'm hoping for more.
  10. There are breaks between rounds IIRC. OUr next pick is #85. Braun's defense is the subject of some debate...but it's the height of silliness to call this a bust already.
  11. I think the Brewers' 3rd rounder is #85 overall.
  12. If there's one thing you can hang your hat on, it's that Jack Z doesn't care who's already in the organization when he makes a pick like this one. Yeah, later in the draft they'll go out of their way to take a catcher or two, but with the #5 overall pick they will go for the top guy on their board. Remember, the Fielder pick came with Hart and Nelson in the system, in addition to Sexson.
  13. I thought he brought out the worst in a lot of otherwise rational people. A few others do the same...but the failure is collective, and not just on one person's shoulders, IMO. It wouldn't be that hard to ignore the drama...thin skin cuts both ways. And I can see his point sometimes...other people slip over the line as well, though not nearly so consistently. I personally don't know that I'd ban him, but then I'm not in charge and don't have to worry about the fallout.
  14. The Zimmerman prediction has come up in other places as well, so it's not an outrageous reach. Incidentally, nobody calls it "Fullerton State."
  15. I do believe that too much is made of Weeks. The future of the Brewers has everything to do with Eveland, Parra, Rogers, and Gallardo and nothing to do with Weeks. So you think people are overstating their case? Maybe. "Nothing to do with Weeks"? Mr. Kettle, have you met Mr. Pot?
  16. Wow, that K/BB ratio is a dramatic development for Sarfate. Seems to me we read somewhere that he's altered his approach this year...sure looks like something has clicked. Of course he has to keep this up beyond April, and stay healthy, but it's great to see him figure out his command.
  17. Just for the record, 5 of the Brewer's 11 games have already been dubbed "must wins" by someone at brewerfan.net. Hmm...that's exactly the same number of actual wins we have. That can't be a coincidence...if we could only find the connection...
  18. Much as I enjoy your posts, DHonks, I disagree with the notion that this game, or any April game, is 'must-win.' Must win or else what? The Dodgers are hot, probably one of top three teams in the league, and Perez is the kind of guy that could give this team fits. Were I a betting man, I'd take the Dodgers in this one. And yet it doesn't change my belief that the Brewers are a 75 win team this year.
  19. Seriously though, Gwynn was drafted less than 2 years ago (as was Weeks). The overreaction to these two fellas supposed "failings" has been a sign of not understanding many players would still be in low A ball. Putting Weeks and Gwynn in the same category is not particularly appropriate, IMO...though of course I realize this is more about Al trying to dismiss others and at the same time pat himself on the back than it is about logic. Like huntsvillefan, I find myself too weak to ignore this...as I clearly should. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif TGJ had a track record when he was drafted...he was not an impact bat at San Diego State, with little power and nothing like the offensive performance that Weeks had (all-time NCAA batting champ, etc). On the other hand, Gwynn was an excellent basebunner and defensive player in college, while Weeks had defensive questions. Last year Weeks was challenged in AA but was pretty good given the context of his league. Gwynn was in over his head by all accounts, even after you park-adjust. And it should be noted that it's possible to agree with the notion that Gwynn could be a good 5th OF and still criticize the Brewers for their choice of Gwynn and his assignment to AA in '04...and given some of the guys they passed up to take him, and Gwynn's record in AA, I think criticism in both cases is still quite valid. Especially given that Gwynn's .294 average is in the same one week sample that is later characterized as 'minute.'
  20. Now I understand why Ozzie Guillen disliked Carlos Lee so much...how selfish of him to double instead of hitting a team-oriented sac fly.
  21. Who is this Bunyan kid? He seems perty good...
  22. Love the new handle...and want to thank you in advance for all your hard work on the link reports!
