  1. Does 'bonkers' mean 'everybody happy'. Braun to right field was about the most consensus I have ever seen on this board. Now that Rickie has found our the secret of infield singles (he has a lot, hey!), I would love him to start many more games at 2nd (or even left field) to get his PAs up. Once he is back to just over .300, then you dangle him. Why he would not consider doing what is best for the team? Who knows. Weeks and 4 positions. It would be great if he could play one.
  2. Since our offense is so offensive - and our starting so good - we are destined to have an entire year of 3-2 and 4-3 games. It seems our entire year will depend on the bullpen. And how RR handles them. So far, RR is doing good. Even great. When RR has only one identifiable blunder (and we get to use hindsight) in 42 games... well, RR doing well. And bullpen doing well. And Thornburg (and Frankie) seeming off is well spotted. Even RR noted Frankie was not throwing the change well and down. In past years we would use a bullpen guy in bad form, HOPING it will turn out ok. Now, it seems great that when you all (and RR) see a guy losing a bit of his stuff... it is noticed... talked about... and even adjustments are being made.
  3. I would love Braun to get past the recent past AND not have the niggly injuries. But what I see is a guy of questionable character who's past body of work is discounted. And who's future is likely a 'pretty good' player who plays 120 games a year. And I see his price tag rising to the 20 mill mark. I actually think none of the other teams would give fair value for him. So I think he will be here forever. And I hope he ends up being the player that gets up over the top and he is embraced, eventually, as our broken, not perfect, but 'family' player. I would obviously trade him for a good package in return. Not even great. But I do not think any other GM will have a lot of interest. I hope I am wrong on all counts. That he becomes MVPish again. And everyone wants him because he is so good. But my head says the last two sentences are unlikely.
  4. "But Thornburg just has a better arm, and he gets a lot of movement" Strange, but up to this sentence I was always told (I cant watch with my own eyes) that Thornburg's fastball was dead straight. Fiers... we will never know until he us up here again. I think a safe way to test the '2nd time through' hypothesis is to see how the AAA hitters handle him the 2nd time through. But this leads to a small thought always in my mind for years. It seems AAA pitchers with decent stuff (and hold their nerve) can be very successful before the MLB 'sees them'. You know. The 'emergency start' where the other team's batters are baffled. I would love to mix this thought with the other thought of giving MLB pitchers their 15 day R&R each year. So your rotation - even bullpen is regularly peppered with a well playing AAA guy. AAA guy baffles. MLB guy rests. I don't know how this could be implemented. But it sounds kind of useful to me. Heck, you can then even 'con' other teams to trade for them 'before their 2nd time through'. Mind you, with a Peralta he is getting better 2nd time and 3rd time through. So we have come full circle. To make the right decision, you need to evaluate properly the talent you have, acquire, and let go. Hmmmm. Our Crew as talent evaluators. Hmmmm?
  5. That Huntsville catching duo is scary good. Wiesenburger has been said to be the best defensive catcher in the entire organisation. And suddenly he is a batting machine. Last year he did this early then cooled a lot. I wonder how long he will keep going. And the Z dude is more amazing. I assume they will both be in AAA next year. They are a bit old (I think 25). But maybe one can be a good backup in Milwaukee in a couple of years. I almost think Maldanado is becoming too good to be a backup. Maybe he will be traded for his own good at some stage - making way for a new backup in two years.
  6. "The only statistics they are allowed to incorporate are appearance-based, like PA/IP, and those are clearly meant as a proxy for health." I really disagree with that statement. You are trying to write your version of the unwritten rules. If a pitcher had bonus, say for 200 ip (a very, very common scenario) and he ended up with an 8 era mid year, but is healthy, can he (should he) file a grievance when he loses his rotation spot. I hardly think that PA and IP incentives and options are guarantees to be the starter, no matter what, as long as you are healthy. And who decides health? Rickie is much, much slower now because of his ankle/legs/hammy/age. Say he is pinch ran for, say by Shafer, and misses an at bat later in the game. Does he file a grievance with MLB Players Association? SRB, it may be true that you are right and the 99% are wrong. But you should consider your position carefully if you are in the 1%. Maybe you are wrong?
  7. I am paying now. In my time zone I simply watched on gameday from 3 am to 6 am. I am bit tired at work. Please, can someone help me. For about three weeks my MLB.com on the iphone plays Bob and Joe for like 45 seconds then goes blank. But says 'playing'. I can go to other broadcasts, like the Pirates today, and it works fine and continuous. But I cannot listen to the radio anymore on my subscription because wtmj (is that it), just gives me 45 seconds then dead air. I can stop, start, stop, start every 45 seconds... but that is a bit painful.
  8. We seem to have a spare all star 2nd baseman with an ops well over .800 and an incredible obp on our hands Dear Other 29 teams. Opening bids please
  9. Wonderful. My kiss of death. A little praise. Let us fix that. WHAT A CRAPPY TEAM. NEVER PULL OUT A GAME LATE. NO CLUTCH. WHAT A JOKE.
  10. Remember Randy Johnson used to get right handers to swing at pitches at their ankles.
  11. I am sitting here at work, coding away, with my eye on the gameday. I am enjoying the game. Baseball is great when you have such great pitching. I even agree with Frankie in the non save (but win ) scenario. The Crew are playing good ball. Batting like rubbish. But the mojo is back. Just going through their work.
  12. Actually Fiers would be a good fit for LA. I assume being a control guy he is a fly ball pitcher. LA or SanDiego would fit well for him. But LA rotation is really good and full... no?
  13. Why is a healthy Braun removed in the 7th inning? Obviously he is not 100%. And he said as much a couple days ago 'it is getting better day by day'. He does not say 'better'. He says 'improving'. So, we have Brittle Braun. Thumb... Ribs. One can almost understand why some players need faster healing assistance. As one poster said somewhere. We must consider Braun a 120 game a year player. We need to coddle him in spring training. Heck. Give him NO spring training. Put him on the DL every year wrapped around the all star break. And likely a MAY DL yearly as well. Hmmmm, what about late August.
  14. I would love the Brewers to do a AAA for AAA trade. The Brewers really do have a decision to make on their perceived value of Fiers. They may consider him the Estrada replacement (in that case you simply let him be a AAA superstar this year and deal with it in the off season (trade Marco)). Or similarly you trade another pitcher in the off season and have Fiers AND Estrada next year. But... what to do about Nelson. If they consider Fiers a AAAA guy, they should do a minors for minors trade for us to get a prospect that 'fits' with our needs in the next couple of years. Oh My. We have a problem. Too many decent starters.
  15. "professional baseball is designed under the principle that money is guaranteed regardless of on-field performance" Yes, Weeks gets his $11 mill regardless in 2013. The key here is the word OPTION vs GUARANTEED. 2014 is an OPTION. 2013 is GUARANTEED. A subtle, but important, difference.
  16. I read in a FanGraphs article on the Crew a couple weeks ago... how the consensus, the experts, the analysts, the WAR gurus, the sabre mechanics, the sports writers, the computers (and all the dogs and cats of the above) picked Boston for dead last... last year. Dare I ask... how long does a team or a player need to play well to be declared good?
  17. Forgive me... but I was following all and understanding, then I saw the contact play (run on ground ball contact) is good with runners on 1st and 2nd. I agree. (but it deflates the rest of the discussion!)
  18. "Maybe Melvin is hoping for the NL to add the DH for Weeks" You would play Weeks at DH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Braun may be out longer. He just says 'it is getting better' So not healed yet
  20. What an amazing night. They all win. Out starters struck out around 300 of the opposing batters. This guy named reed draws two more walks. How you walk twice as much as K is incredible Delmonico homers first game back Fiers Ks 13 Most of our fringe players (like Halton and Morris) are collecting multi hit games All around very promising for the worst minors teams in baseball. I guess the other teams must be stacked with trout and pujohli and molini
  21. And the Brewers are also screwing me out of $11 mill by not offering me that much money to play worse 2nd base than some short guy named Scooter. I am looking for a lawyer as I speak (I also will consider the odd game in left field for my $11 mill)
  22. How much are wins 'worth' in free agency? I hope our managers are worth millions and not costing us millions. RR is much better this year. I really only consider I have seen one assinine decision. But I reiterate I hope RR learned from that. Mind you Kintzler was in yesterday again in a one run game. But that was down by one My point is: be a man and admit mistakes and learn. And overall he is improving
  23. A win tomorrow will completely right the ship. And I am happy to see RR has begun to be proactive re Davis. Get him a platoon partner. I wonder if they would send Davis to AAA for a while
  24. Wow. 5 pitches. 3 outs. Just put Frankie back in the holster for tomorrow
