  1. Thanks topper! Talk about me standing corrected! That is a solid, solid 4th. Tied for 3rd. And a big gap to 5th. And you likely should exclude American League as you get the DH (not pitcher) at bats with RISP. So, we and thin air Colorado are the run away leaders.
  2. I just think of all my years at third base coach telling the runners, 'we are down by a couple, so don't do anything silly, the guy batting has got to score for us to win... if he scores, then you will score easily, so don't do anything silly, just relax, you are not the important run... let the guy bat' I am only watching on gameday, but man oh man, what a series. What a gift from the Mountains to the Great Lakes. If I were a Rockies fan I would be more than livid. Can I ask a side question? What is our OPS with RISP - position in the league. I get the feeling we are below average on that important stat. Just in this game we had a couple chances to explode away, but failed with RISP. But maybe I am wrong.
  3. Is not the inning increase you want to stick to 25 innings. So he would seem to be limited to 190ish this year.
  4. To my looking (at the stats) Ramirez and Morris are copies - just not quite good enough to be an impact at MLB. But this can be wrong, but our first baseman cupboard across the organisation looks a bit bare. I wonder, just wonder, wonder about Shawn Zarraga. His year is getting long enough to not be considered a fluke. A catcher at AA hitting near .400 at age 25, in his first year of being FIT, maybe can turn into something? Coulter two levels below is one out of the box it seems. So it seems the Crew need to get a first basemen from outside... or 1) Give Reynolds another year (but he will cost like a free agent, I guess) 2) Move Braun to first 3) If Zarraga made it to Milwaukee by mid 2015, then you can oddly begin to give Lucroy some time at first 4) Swap Coulter to first Since it is such long term problem (on the horizon no organisational first baseman will fill ok) there likely should be some firm change in direction for a player. With Lucroy and Maldonado being so good and in Crew control for a few years maybe you bite the bullet and fast track a position switch for Coulter. and... we get to have the same discussion next year with 3rd base as ARAM is gone after 2015 - and the 3rd base cupboard is bare, too! So maybe scratch the Coulter to first move and make it Coulter to third. Anyway, if you are a Crew minor league infielder.... get to WORK, there is a place for you.
  5. Aside from the Nashville 'oopsy' (and that is only one guy have a horror outing), the entire organisation must be the luckiest on earth. Because when you are one of the worst two minors systems... and you roll like today, well something does not add up. Either you are lucky or you are not that bad. I will ring Keith Law so he can tell me which one it is.
  6. This gives more weight to the argument for a considerable stronger bench. From next year we do need that platoon guy for Scooter. But a platoon guy that can play elsewhere as well. So, it seems a high priority is the 2nd base / 3rd base or 2nd base / outfield right hand bat guy. That guy (especially with niggly Braun injuries) will surely get 50 starts over the course of the year.
  7. The dollars for giving the guy 4 years of arbie instead of 3 is that, if he is good, each year his salary is a couple mill higher. So over four years you have paid an extra 8 mill. So, any starts that Nelson makes for the Crew before late July cost $8 mill all up. I guess early July would be OK, but for the 27 days already Jimmy has of service time. So, we surely will not see Jimmy until late July. Now, that said, I agree with the other poster who mentioned the 2014 work load concern. We may call up Nelson, only to know in one month he has hit his limit. So, I would like Nelson's pitch count / innings lessened at AAA. It sounds cruel, but maybe he needs to be on a 5 inn, 80 pitch limit for a few starts. Just so he can see out the year strong in Milwaukee.
  8. Braun really is struggling with his niggly injuries. He seems to hit best to right field now - less torque for the chest I guess... and less thumb snap. I think pulling the ball must be more stressful overall. And overall his power is sapped, it seems. Unless Braun comes back to his former self, people will say all these years the PEDs kept him niggle free. It could be true. It may be a 100% guy with PED and an 80% guy without. As I noted before, I think giving him much more rest (like a short spring training, maybe a 15 day dl once a year when the first niggle comes, a few days off) we may end up with a 90% guy. We need to manage this for the next five years (at upward of 20 mill a year!)
  9. Ha Ha. When I said 'a team would never offer contracts aside from the six years of control year by year', I did mean the BREWERS as a (the) team. Imagine how simple it would be. For the overall Brewer 'good' or 'bad', I am not sure. But it sure stinks when you are paying your players north of 100 mill and you are having losing seasons. Losing seasons should be 'rewarded' with low payroll. The focus would sure shift to draft and development
  10. Talking about a guy's mechanics (well the Brewers development team chatting re it) scares me. Based on history the Brewer coaches who 'develop' players in the past are just plain awful. I don't know if any guys from the Rogers era are left, but to pick guys with sparkling stuff and pace, then to say 'now WE are going to change you' is the edge of idiocy. Why do you pick a guy based on what he has, then immediately say 'change what you have', that is no so smart. I hope they leave Kodi to just pitch. re KLaw, there is actually something disturbed about the guy. If you did a study of what he has said in the past, your picture would be of a disturbed, incoherent human.
  11. Come September, that is going to be one crowded bullpen. The guys will surely be able to be fresh for the post season. And one could almost guess at a six man rotation as well. With so many lefties I wonder if Smith moves into the rotation at some point. I could see a Smith and Estrada swap. Mind you, do you play with fire? Smith has won games just with his back end ability.
  12. I had a theory one time that a team should NEVER offer contracts EVER to any players. You just have each player for six years and you let them go. This is because arbitration pays each player based on what he did LAST YEAR. So you never overpay. If a player plays wonderfully - he gets paid. If he does not play well - he is paid not well.
  13. Interesting overall, concise, Super Two, $$$ discussion http://www.thewaiverwire.co/2014/04/17/how-important-is-the-super-two-cut-off-date/ Most interesting points: players that qualify for “Super Two” status a step further, saying that an early promotion of a top prospect could cost a team between an extra $10-15 million over the course of arbitration From my reading it is late June to early July the cutoff will come. So, if I believe all I read, you don't want to pay $10+ mill for two or three starts of Nelson. Do you do the spot start (one day service) and put him back down? Then do the same in 10 days? That would raise the ire of the players association. But they don't care about minor leaguers, do they? So the best way (and too awful to do) would be MLB start, back to AAA, AAA start, MLB start, back to AAA, AAA start, MLB start, back to AAA, AAA couple of starts... final call up, say after all star break. But that is too ugly to do... but it saves you $10 mill!
  14. Nelson just threw another 6ip, 1 run, 10k outing in AAA again. Enough already of him in AAA. He threw 102 pitches. If you worry about his super two status, just give the guy a fortnight off, then bring him up. He is clearly now an upgrade to at least one member of the MLB team. So he should be on the MLB team.
  15. I would be tempted to try something perhaps 'evil'. He is getting so underpaid and he is not set up as a multi-ten-millionaire yet. So I say to Carlos 'we cannot afford a big extension, but we want to do something that helps US and helps YOU and still give you a chance for a massive payday. We will add ONE year to the end of your contract for 20 mill. But we will pay it 5 mill signing bonus now and 15 mill for that extra year. I know we cannot afford 20 mill a year for many years. And Carlos will likely get that. But maybe we can get ONE of those years. And it is even a bit of insurance for Gomez. He has not been paid enough yet to be a super rich. But with one extra year added, he will be really set up for life.
  16. Yes, this idea of walk + homerun, then walk, walk, walk + homerun is 100% unacceptable. This trend has been appearing for a few starts. If RRR was proactive with Henderson, then NOW is the time to be proactive with Marco.
  17. I like the great discussion gents. The most important sentence perhaps was (TheCrew07): "We can be "in it" with a rotation full of 3s but I don't think we can win anything meaningful in the post season with that kind of roster construction, at some point we need pitchers we can match-up to the best in baseball" I don't follow the A's much. But I think that must be their problem. And it is why we should do any and everything to find such a Number 1 starter. I mean you can throw the guy in games 1,4,7 of a World Series. It is certainly a place I would hope the Brewers would overspend at some stage. But, as you wise chatters note, the draft is where they should be hunted for.
  18. Briggsy (RR calls him that) said what I was thinking the last couple of days: "As bad as Bianchi looked for the Brewers, put him in the lineup everyday against AAA pitching and he's suddenly hitting .313/.371/.500." It sure does seem to me the jump from AAA to MLB is great. Is Bianchi now the definition of an AAAA player? I wonder if our bench really should be oldsters that are only capable (physically) of playing now and again. I had a previous theory one should pick all sorts of AAAA, on the bubble guys who are 27 years old, for the bench. You hope to get their magical year 26,27,28. But maybe you should pick the grizzled 36,37,38 year olds who were polished MLB guys at 26,27,28.
  19. I notice the DSL Brewers are 6-2 now. I seem to recall in recent years a lot of 2-6, 5-15, 10-30, etc. records. Maybe I remember wrong. But I recall being underwhelmed by the young, youngsters. And it was always one of the reasons that raters rated us poorly, I think - because our very young did very bad. I hope the tide has turned and we will be blessed with many late teenagers doing well - making our horizons look bright.
  20. To my eye, Braun is clearly struggling a little still (maybe forever) with the thumb and chest. But struggling to a .320ish average, hey! I really like Braun 2. I wonder if he decided to cut back even a bit more on his swing, if he would turn into a Tony Gwynn .360+ batter. The lineup now, is quite good. Segura even has spoke about a wee bit of a different approach 'I know I have to get on base'. RRR said sometimes moving a guy into the leadoff will spark him. That seems to have worked. Honestly, if this lineup stays healthy (on the field), it is fun to watch. I mean when you are looking forward to 6 and 7 (Reynolds/Davis) to pound the ball, and 8 will likely give you a good at bat, then something is right. To me the joy is this: this lineup is likely the one for 2015 as well. Only an upgrade could happen. Imagine getting a true power left hand first baseman. But if Reynolds continues on, you may not even 'need' that.
  21. It is terribly disappointing that all the first baseman in the minors are kind of 'not great'. I think Denison had a high upside, but he is now out for the year, so he can be a bolter for next year. Morris, Rogers, Ramirez, etc just seem like they have no high upside. So, then one thinks.... Braun to first... and you scour for on the horizon impact right fielders in our minors... nope. So, then one thinks.... maybe there is a minors third baseman around... nope. Thank God for Mark Reynolds, hey! Somewhere a solution exists. But darned if I can see it.
  22. Colby: I think in the end Kodi gets somewhere in the $2.2-2.4 M range and both Harrison and Gatewood get around $1.8, in which the math still works. The pair of 1.8s was not quite right (1.8 and 1.83). But you do seem to have some idea what you are talking about. So if I am in Vegas I am laying down the bet on 2.2 to 2.4. Oddly, if Kodi did not decide to accept, we would get that same pick next year. But I am sure (as your sources say) the final signing if the trifecta must close. The Crew does not offer over slot for the two they signed without knowing what the savings are from the number one pick. I don't follow other teams, so I cant compare. But (again based on the chatter here) it seems the Crew did wonderfully. I wonder what it will take to get Keith Law on side. Law said the Boston draft was very good.
  23. re the 6th rounder Burkhalter. I love the idea of high school guys that are 'just under 90 mph' but with great control on multiple pitches. If you have a bundle of them, 2 or 3 will add 5 mph over the next 3 to 4 years, and you will have a couple 95 mph guys with control. When I compare him to Sneed (third round) I almost feel their draft positions could be swapped.
  24. We do not have bench depth. But this pitching depth we have is quite useful.
  25. I actually think the thread could be 'at what point does Nelson replace Marco or YoGa'. Gallardo is really, to my eye, on the start of a bad career slide. I think Marco has had a bad patch. But Yovani is looking like he will break apart at any time - these painful less than 6 inning 100+ pitches, giving up a few runs, are... painful. To be honest, I can see in 2015 neither Marco (trade) or Gallardo (non tender) being around. The next month will really, really tell us a lot. A couple of bad patches for both - or maybe the use by date has come.
