  1. Come on man, don't derail the thread. Manny would be a rental, he's going to sign with one of 8-10 teams that can reasonably afford him...and we aren't on that list.
  2. I don't even see the need for a insurance policy starter and don't see where we would make room for one. We have depth (Woodruff, Davies, Miley, Burnes). We have a decent starting rotation. We just don't have an ace. Unless someone gets hurt, we either need a clear upgrade (Mets pitchers, ??) or you might as well spend our assets elsewhere. Curious if people think that Mikolas is what he has shown or if he will come back down to earth? If the Cards fall behind even further by the end of July..... At this very moment, our insurance policy is Woodruff. After that it's Wilkerson, Burnes, other guys that you really don't want starting meaningful games. Heck I'd argue you don't want Suter or Woodruff starting meaningful games down the stretch. Bringing in someone like Hamels or Happ only makes sense if you don't think Nelson or Davies will pitch for an extended stretch(late August at the earliest). Those guys aren't really upgrades to a majority of our rotation and are roughly more of the same(I prefer Hamels to Happ by a wide margin). Stroman, Archer, Degrom, Syndergaard...are the only 4 I identify that could be true upgrades(could be, no guarantee...especially Archer).
  3. It sounds like you'd be looking to replace Saladino then? That would probably be the most logical option if we traded for Machado or Escobar, I'm not sure on his option situation if we can send him down...but I believe we could.
  4. I can understand the argument/appeal to trading Arcia while he has value, but not for Machado. Hardest of passes. If you want to add him as a piece in a Degrom/Thor deal...fine. Possibly even an Archer or Stroman deal depending on the other pieces involves. But not a rental.
  5. That just isn't something Stearns would do. How long ago did you ask him? I can read through his transaction logs and see he hasn't ever traded significant assets for a rental, and I also can see he's able to give up significant assets for guys with a lot of team control. Pair that with his comments about targeting young/controllable talent...simple enough to read between the lines. But cool response though, I'm pretty sure the mods are trying get people to cut back on that sort of thing...
  6. I see now Thornburg has been activated and will probably debut sometime this weekend. Good for him, I hope he is able to return/recover from the Red Sox messing up his arm with their terrible shoulder program and poor communication.
  7. It would be foolish if we didn't at least try to take advantage of a bad GM/owner in such a manner.
  8. If that's the ask, he won't be a Brewer. It's that simple. No way are we giving up Burnes or especially Arcia for Machado. That just isn't something Stearns would do.
  9. I'm so curious where the bidding ends up. I can't remember such an impactful position player rental ever being traded at the deadline. It's amazing what adding Machado would do to our lineup, I'm definitely open depending on the cost. I'd have to agree that those 3 prospects should be off limits. I wonder how open the Orioles would be to some of our MLB ready guys like Woodruff, Phillips, Santana, Broxton, etc.
  10. Thinking through the guys we have, I'm not entirely sure we'll target a middle infielder anymore. Right now our starters if healthy are Cain/Yelich/Braun/Aguilar/Villar/Saladino/Shaw/Pina on a given night. We'll probably roll 13 relievers more often than not. Our bench includes Perez/Miller/Thames/backup C. Arcia is in AAA working on his bat and is a depth option. There really isn't a spot for a backup middle infielder. For us to even bother trading for someone, we would have to determine that said person is a better option than one of our current guys. That narrows the list considerably and immediately. You are probably looking at Machado, Escobar, and Scooter as the only clear upgrades. Arguments can be made for a couple other guys, depending on what you are looking for specifically. I'm open to exploring any of those guys. I doubt we trade for Scooter. Machado will probably be too expensive but we should at least check in on him. Escobar could be interesting, that's assuming the Twins move him.
  11. Are you saying chatwood has been an excellent investment or the defense? Chatwood has been bad. Mid 4s era. Hasn't made it past 5.1 innings since April and only has one start over 6 on the season. What about that is excellent Chatwood has 8.1 BB/9 and an xFIP of 5.26. He has actually been quite fortunate on the year. Lester has been pretty bad as well, worst peripherals of any full season in his career yet his best ERA ever. The Cub's defense and/or luck has played a huge role in their pitching this season. This is spot on, my excellent investment comment was snide/joking...he's been dreadful and it looks like a terrible signing.
  12. Keep it rolling boys. Folty has been very tough on us his entire career and is having a really good year as is, going to be a tough one tomorrow. I have to think Perez has earned himself another start after his day today. I could see Perez in CF with Broxton on the bench, also could see Miller at SS tomorrow with Peralta starting.
  13. Cubs number two. I'm shocked we are still in first. Cubs seem to be good at everything. Hugely up in run differential. Maybe bullpen? That change soon I'm sure as we get to the trade deadline. For a good chunk of this year, cubs' offense has either scored a ton in games to blow the doors off a team, or been shut down and lost 1-2 run games...thus the crazy high run differential for being 14 games over .500 right now. No doubt they have talent all over the field, but their pitching depth is stressed and they'll need more arms to contribute. They have actually been lucky with how inconsistent their starters have been overall. I find it frustrating how many random nobody AAAA arms the Cubs are bringing up and posting good numbers. I know a majority of their success is attributable to low stress situations and their great defense...but still frustrating. I wonder what Chatwood's ERA would be if he played for a below average defense. He relies so heavily on defense with all the walks he allows, so far looking like an excellent investment by the Cubs.
  14. I'd like to see us tack on a couple and let Jennings try to finish it. At some point, we'll have to find Williams and Barnes some work.
  15. Cubs number two. I'm shocked we are still in first. Cubs seem to be good at everything. Hugely up in run differential. Maybe bullpen? That change soon I'm sure as we get to the trade deadline. They'd probably be 10 points ahead of us if they had an average defender in LF. Schwarber is seriously dreadful.
  16. Nice that Freeman won't be able to tie the game himself in the top half regardless of what we do. He'll be leading off.
  17. I hope Barnes or Williams are up in the bullpen just in case. I'm assuming Jeffress for the 9th.
  18. Statistically we may, but not the guys we are running out there currently. Without Arcia in there we can't be in that conversation. The dropoff from him to even Saladino is significant, and now we are sometimes playing Miller out there...
  19. The ump was surprisingly consistent on calling the bottom edge of the zone in that atbat. Ended up getting us a walk.
  20. I get it this year, but before Cain’s contract is over he’s going to slow. He will still get great jumps but Keon will hold his athleticism. To be honest I’m pretty sure either one would be perfectly fine in any OF spot defensively. Cain isn't a great fit in RF due to his below average arm. But Broxton could play plus defense anywhere. LOL at dWAR that had him below average last year. I suspect if both are in the lineup, Broxton will be the one to move as it is moreso Cain's spot than his.
  21. Oh my goodness what a joke. That did not hit him. Is this guy a distant cousin of Neymar? He looked like such a little fruit for the ball not even touching him...
  22. "Kratz hammers one to deep right field"...no, no he really didn't. He hit a can of corn fly ball to right center, medium deep at most. When is BA coming back>
  23. Didn't seem like a big deal or that he got in his face. They were just talking. The whole not calling time thing was kinda BS though. I'd be pissed if something like that happened to the Brewers. If a guy asks for time, friggin give him time. That and the called 3rd strike led to that. Inciarte handled it well, but I do feel like it's been happening more where umpires follow a guy back to the dugout and otherwise look for any excuse to toss a guy. They should be moreso trying to keep a guy in the game than looking for any excuse to throw him out. I'm sure Cubs fans(or baseball fans in general) don't want to see one of their stars like Bryant or Rizzo thrown out in the 2nd inning over something stupid like a trivial comment to an umpire, not good for your product.
  24. I'm pretty sure Camargo looked up before throwing and eased up big time when he realized how slow Kratz was. I think pretty much everyone on our team not named Kratz or Aguilar beats that out.
  25. Oh man, if I was a Braves fan I may have thrown my remote straight through my TV. Love the miscues though. Good things happen when you put the ball in play...except for Villar right there.
