  1. I would think Broxton would be targeted by a 2nd division team or rebuilding team that can give him everyday playing time and hope he puts things together.
  2. HH just claimed the chances of a Santana trade dropped to zero. I wonder why. Makes me wonder if Thames or Aguilar is on the move.
  3. Counsel said Braun will not play RF. Yelich will get looks at all 3 spots. Braun will work at LF and 1b. I agree with that, don't want to overload him too much as he's already learning 1b.
  4. Players reach a point that at bats in AAA don't really help much. It may help guys stay sharp and see live pitching, but there isn't much value in them going to AAA and face subpar competition. It's just a holding spot for depth, and that may be the route we go but it isn't ideal. Would be more ideal to trade a player for value.
  5. No one is missing Sogard. You clearly missed that he signed a guaranteed deal. That gives him an inside track as a likely reserve on this roster.
  6. You make a good point. It would be very risky to put Braun in at 1b in spring training games and have him potentially flail around and look terrible. Other teams would see it, see our dilemna, and we'd lose all leverage.
  7. Won't you have room for 2 of Perez, Broxton, Phillips, Aguilar? 13 Ps, 8 position starters, backup C, 1 of Thames, Braun, Yelich, Cain, Santana. I think it will be Perez plus either Phillips or Keon, mostly depending on how much they value BP playing everyday in AAA vs. having him as another left-handed bat on the bench. Hard to find ABs for Aguilar at this point. You are missing Sogard.
  8. I think we open the season with Thames, Braun, Yelich, Cain, Santana as the 5 options for 4 spots. We will basically have Perez, Broxton, Phillips and Aguilar battling for 1 remaining spot on the roster(assuming 8 man pen), and I think the obvious choice for the roster is Perez for his versatility. Any given day, we'll have 1 of those 5 guys able to be a quality PH option. I think 150 for Yelich and 145 for Cain. Braun will play 5-6 days a week when healthy with occasional rest days...and Santana will also play almost everyday. Thames will be the guy scraping for starts.
  9. It didn’t? Seems like he got a good contract even if Boras said that with a straight face. He reportedly was offered $100 million right away. Martinez countered at $210 million...and was able to squeeze out $10 million more. He probably could have gotten that $10 million in December if he gave the impression he was close to picking Boston.
  10. As others have noted, the pace of play has changed pretty drastically over the last 20-30 years. It would be more likely to get worse than better if MLB didn't step in and try to do something about it.
  11. Right, that speed late in games... That move pretty much confirms one less landing spot for Broxton.
  12. That whole shoot for the moon thing really worked out...
  13. Why not? If the DBacks come in with a good offer, I'd be all for it. Though I would agree an AL team is the better fit because of the DH. I'm moreso referring to them being competition for the wildcard. Do we really want to help direct competition get better? Might be a situation where we try to extract a premium.
  14. I think this was well done by Dombrowski. No sense in bidding against yourself. Dbacks couldn't match that. I think this move hurts Santana's market a bit. I could have seen Boston panicking if they didn't get Martinez. I doubt we want to move Santana to the Dbacks, so Cleveland is the primary landing spot and they know it.
  15. I think Martinez going to Boston is bad for our leverage with Santana. Might leave Cleveland as the only real suitor. Diamondbacks may have interest, but we are competing with them for wildcard this year. I'm not so sure we want to send them good players.
  16. You are clearly looking at this through a very specific lens. If Cobb came back from surgery and was in 2014 form, he'd be out of our price range. Probably looking at a Darvish contract. As others have noted, he was a decent pitcher in his first year back from TJ with his best pitch not working properly. Also moving from loaded AL East division, hitter friendly parks, with DH to NL central no DH.
  17. Thank you! That is exactly what I have said for years! Reduce the 20 or so commercial breaks throughout the game and don’t take 5 minutes to do a replay review. If you can’t see a way to change it after a few different camera views, play on! That's absolutely not true, and football games aren't increasing at rates like baseball games...and signs point to it getting worse and worse. Plus, all other sports have a limit to how many "timeouts" you can take...why is it so unreasonable to have more of them in baseball? Plus as I've noted, I think an unintended consequence could be reduced pitching changes. Especially at first, managers may have a tough time managing their mound visits/pitcher warmups and may not make a pitching change they intended to because a reliever isn't ready.
  18. It will be the manager's responsibility to limit mound meetings then to make sure he has one at the end of the game. A team losing a game because the manager used all his mound visits and couldn't set up the appropriate defense isn't on the rule, it's on the manager. How is it any different from an NFL team using timeouts too early because they didn't get a play in timely...and that timeout costing them the game? It's on the coach/team...not the NFL for not granting more timeouts... And I think the reason they want to stick to 3 hours is it becomes a slippery slope. If 3 hours and 10 minutes becomes the new norm, why not 3 hours and 20 minutes? 2 years later...3 hours and 30 minutes. Gotta draw a line in the sand on this stuff, many people would say 3 hours is too long.
  19. If players don't listen to the ump, they could be hitting the showers early. One or two of those to set a precedent will probably slow down or stop any efforts at abusing the rule.
  20. I don't mean to nitpick your post as it was well thought out, but the casual fans like Marlin Man simply aren't going to grasp the rebuild. They think right now, they are better off with Stanton and Yelich and those high powered offenses than they'll be on the tail end of a rebuild with a young talented core or cheap players, good pitching, and money to spend(all theoretically). They'll be happy when that day comes, but until they can actually see it happening and see the good baseball...the casual fans will flock to other sports/entertainment and complain about Jeter and his tactics.
  21. I already can see it coming, some reliever is going to get hurt because a dumb manager threw him in before he was fully warm and they'll blame the mound visits rule...rather than the manager's incompetence. My guess is Joe Maddon.
  22. There are a ton of situations where a manager will take his sweet time lumbering to the mound intentionally to slow the game down to allow his pitcher to warm up. It's an intentional stall tactic, limiting these will absolutely speed the game up. Heck it might even result in less pitching changes for reactionary managers that use too many mound visits and can't slow the game down to allow a reliever to warm up. I feel like 6 is a lot though, I wish it was 4 or 3.
  23. I feel like both sides are feeling a sense of urgency, I'm surprised Cobb or Lynn didn't sign over the weekend. It's gotta happen soon.
  24. HH tweeted that the Braves and Nationals are in on Cobb. I buy the agent might have told the brewers that, but I don't really buy either team as after Cobb's services. Braves are like the 2013 mets on steroids with pitching prospects, no system has more quality arms. I don't know that they want to block any of those prospects. The Nationals maybe, but I think they'd be more inclined to target holland...and they don't exactly have a ton of room under the cap. Signing either guy leaves them maybe 3-5 million under the luxury tax for in season maneuvering.
