  1. It's been noted in the Cain thread, but 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 for Cain salaries the next 5 years. 1 million deferred each year thereafter. Our payroll is roughly in the 89-90 range, subtract 2 from that if we don't keep Gallardo...but we also potentially have to pay up to 5.4 million in incentives for Logan/Jeffress. Still, we have some payroll to work with yet.
  2. Really hope they keep Phillips. Between Braun at 1st and other days off for him, it could lead to 60+ starts available for Phillips. I want to see a runner at 3rd thrown out at home on a base hit to left. If Braun moves to 1b part time or full time, I imagine Yelich would play LF and Phillips/Broxton/Santana in RF depending on the moves made. So those Phillips throws will come from right, but they'll be just as fun. I want to see another base runner feign a move to home and go "wow" as he watches the smoke from Phillips cannon whiz by.
  3. I mean if you believe everything Stearns says to a T. What else could he have said today? Honest question. That we are searching for somewhere to send Santana? That's definitely a fair point. If you believe HH, a Santana deal has already been made and will likely be announced very soon. Even if Santana leaves, maybe they want Phillips in RF and move Braun to 1b. You could easily argue making a comment like that tells teams we are shopping Aguilar, which if Braun actually moves to 1b then Aguilar is long gone guaranteed.
  4. Exactly, and surely more than 1 team could use a guy like Santana. Diamondbacks and Indians jump off the page at me for starters. And that's relatively moot most likely anyways, I fully believe a deal is already in place for Santana(noted by HH). They probably didn't want to announce it before the press conference with Cain and steal any of his thunder. My guess is it gets announced later tonight, maybe tomorrow, but probably tonight.
  5. It's definitely worth looking at to see the cost. Santana for Corbin isn't close, it's just not happening. Maybe Broxton+ for Corbin? Or who knows what they'd want. But Corbin isn't straight bad, he's a solid pitcher...probably a #3/4 that would slot in around Anderson/Davies in a rotation.
  6. Why is it poor asset management?
  7. Stearns just said in his press conference that Cain will be the primary CF with Yelich covering CF sometimes. He also said they will explore the idea of Braun at 1b, both sides are open to it. That throws a bit of a wrench in things...
  8. You add bull pen arms at the deadline you tend to have to over pay big time. I think Hader needs to be in the starting rotation so I do not see him as an option in the pen and frankly I see the staring pitching as a stronger unit then the bull pen (with Hader in the mix)as of right now. That's actually not necessarily true. I wouldn't say we overpaid for Swarzak. If we want someone like Chapman, maybe we'll have to shell out. I don't think we do that though, we can target guys of the Robertson/Kahnle caliber for a reasonable price. And I agree that I'd like to see Hader start. I've been preaching it all offseason. I'm starting to deal with the reality that the Brewers are going to make the mistake of using him in the bullpen instead.
  9. Because starting pitching is more valuable? We've got back of the bullpen options. Hader and Knebel are going to be lights out. We need better starting pitching so we don't have to overuse the back of the bullpen like we did last year. We can add relief options at the deadline to bolster what we already have. At the moment, starting pitching should be a bigger priority. At the moment, Hader/Suter/Gallardo/Burnes are our 5th starter. With the moves they've made, it doesn't make sense to enter the season without an established 5th guy. Let Woodruff be our question mark, we need someone better to lead the rotation. As of now, it's mostly mid-back end guys to go with a very strong offense.
  10. As noted elsewhere, I'd give it nearly 100% certainty that Cleveland rejects Santana for Mejia straight up. I don't know that they'd reject that deal. They have 2 catchers with significant team control, both of which are better defenders. Also note that Santana is almost a necessity for that team. There is no other RH power hitting OF as established as Santana that is both expendable and as low cost as he will be. That said, I don't think we trade Santana for anything other than pitching.
  11. Kinsler was scooped up by the Angels already...
  12. I believe we're around $85 Million. That's correct. I have the opening day payroll almost right at $85,000,000. Though that's without knowing Cain's actual 2018 salary and just using $16 million. That does not include in-season costs, though. That's easily another $5 million. Are you counting all the min salaries? I have us around 92 million if you include gallardo, dropping him takes us to 90. That's relatively on par with what reilly posted in the payroll thread on the major league section. It's not a huge difference, fact is we definitely have room to add payroll yet.
  13. Guys get aches and pains. It absolutely makes sense to give Yelich and Cain a game or two off per month if they get dinged up, especially the older Cain. Even projection sites figure on the most healthy of players sitting out at least a few games per year.
  14. I think that's likely. The stadium upgrades likely wouldn't impact our payrolls/rainy day fund too significantly. Add in the $50 million one time payout, I think $120ish is the high end but I don't think I'd be surprised by the Brewers payroll unless it went over $140.
  15. My preference on this: 1B: Braun (81 games), Thames (81 games w/ 0 against LHP) LF: Yelich (100 games); Braun (52 games) CF: Cain (110 games); Yelich (52 games) RF: Phillips (120 games); Cain (42 games) Trade Santana for Salazar + or for Meija and sign a FA pitcher. This keeps Braun at ~130 games, Yelich & Cain at ~150 games, Phillips at ~120 games and Thames at ~80 games. Seems like a good split to me. The one thing you miss here, often Phillips will play against LHP. If Braun plays every game at 1b against LHP, there's only one guy left to play in the outfield. This type of platoon works much better with Broxton than Phillips, and best with Santana.
  16. I don't think Gallardo was ever going to start, but your point still stands that we can save 2 million by not keeping him.
  17. That's not necessarily true, especially after the moves we just made.
  18. Look at Thames September numbers. He went out on a good note after making mechanical adjustments in season.
  19. I'll go on record saying I don't generally like the moves. It's an all-in window type move. That said, this is going to be a fun year/window...especially considering we aren't done yet. What if we trade Santana for SP(my money is on Salazar+), sign Walker for 2/22 or 3/33, package phillips/ortiz as the headliners for Duffy and Herrera. This pushes payroll high for the next couple years, maybe the 3rd move doesn't happen. Rotation Salazar, Duffy, Anderson, Davies, Chacin...Woodruff and Burnes open in AAA, Nelson comes back eventually. Lineup Yelich, Walker, Braun, Shaw, Cain, Thames, Pina, Arcia(Yelich/Walker/Cain are mostly interchangeable). Broxton sticks around as a 4th OF that provides good D late in games and a threat on the bases, on days Broxton starts we have a ridiculous defensive outfield. Bullpen Knebel, Hader, Herrera, Logan, Barnes, Jeffress, Suter. That team is probably a hair worse than the cubs on paper, but close enough that we have a real shot to pass them. We also have more pieces available to add at the deadline if needed.
  20. I'm trying to get a feel for how much payroll space we have left to work with to make moves. It's hard to say for sure without knowing the limit, but I don't think we have much left. Trading for Kipnis seems unlikely at this point.
  21. I haven't seen a breakout on Cain, but if it's evenly spread we'll be at 92ish for 2018, and 2019 will be tough to make work depending on the additions we make to the rotation and 2b.
  22. Has anyone seen a salary breakdown by year on Cain?
  23. Awful awful trade. I hate it. Dear god what an awful trade.
  24. That info seems dated as just yesterday they said the Brewers were the first "serious offer" they've received and that offer reportedly went out on Tuesday. HH19 say's it's going to sting. All signs point to it being a substantial offer that they are seriously considering.
  25. I would assume if someone else was topping our offer, something would have trickled down trying to see if we will further increase our offer. I feel like this gets finalized in the next day or two.
