  1. With the seven head to head games against the Cubs coming up soon, the focus on the offense is going to continue. Even with the 22 run laugher the Brewers are only averaging 4.3 RPG in August, below the league average of 4.6 RPG for the whole season. There have been exchanges in other threads in which I have disagreed with posters who have taken the position that the Brewers offense is about equal to the Cubs. For the last few months that hasn’t been true, and not that close. The Brewers have still been able to win games with exceptional run prevention supported by an offense that has been near or below league average for a few months now. The question is whether that formula will hold up against a Cubs team that has been much more productive since their month long slump that saw their record fall to .500 in mid June. We’ll find out soon.
  2. And also fans watching the team or teams chasing their team for a division title or playoff seeding. I’d be watching the Cardinals or Reds or Pirates just as closely if they were in second place. With the pivotal seven head to head games starting next week that focus is even sharper.
  3. Between pitchers coming back from injuries and the deadline pickups the Cubs pitching staff is a lot different now than it was for much of the season. I know there are people who think that looking at anything other than full season stats is cherry picking, but in the case of the Cubs pitching the recent stats are probably more relevant. The last two nights they got 7 shutout innings from both Gausman and Holmes and Palencia is just coming back from injury.
  4. The pivotal play in the game came with 2 on and 2 on in the last of the 8th. A check swing roller down the first base line hit the bag and bounced away turning an easy out into a run scoring double. That was followed by a single that drove in 2 runs to make it 4-3
  5. Second time on this trip the Cubs lose on a last out walkoff 2 run HR and
  6. Meanwhile the Cubs pull out the 3 run HR as another of their deadline pickups shuts down the DBacks.
  7. He makes that throw and the Mets still have the bases loaded. Get out of the inning and the Brewers would have to score at some point and hope for someone near the bottom of the bullpen ladder to hold the lead. They needed to win that game in the ninth inning and when they didn’t they were in bad shape. I’m blaming the offense.
  8. Blaming this game on anything other than inept offense is ridiculous.
  9. Just what you want on the first day of 16 games and 16 days that include seven games against the team chasing you Burn up the bullpen chasing what looks like a lost cause with an offense that can’t get a run in from third with nobody out or from second with nobody out and the top of the order up.
  10. A soft looper like that a major league shortstop should catch.
  11. There might be a different standard for a veteran catcher who is conserving energy. A rookie whose speed is one of his assets cab be taught a lesson.
  12. Even last place teams are hard to beat when you can’t score.
  13. Remember that Pratt also didn’t run hard out if the box on Saturday when he hit a check swing dribbler down the first base line. He then had to hustle and barely beat it out when Perez dropped the ball. I said at the time that he probably got a talking to after that, so a second offense earned him a spot on the bench. Whether he would have made it to second or not isn’t the point. If he’s running hard out of the box he puts himself in a position to possibly get to second if the ball isn’t handled cleanly.
  14. The Brewers elite offense is in another funk. Eight runs total in the last three games and squandering another scoring chance tonight.
  15. They are 19-15 since the All Star break and 12-8 in August. They’ve won series against the Phillies, Braves, and Padres, and swept Cleveland and haven’t been swept by anyone since the ASB
  16. These "if..then" scenarios come up every year, and they are a way to quantify a team's position. The Brewers are obviously in a very strong position with a 6 game lead with 31 to play. Fan Graphs has them at a 92% chance of winning the division. But, as the PP noted, the 7 head to head games are sitting there as a big opportunity for the Cubs to cut into the deficit without needing help from anyone else. if they can win 5 (or, heaven forbid, more) of those games, the race will look very different going into the final 15 games. Winning 5 of the 7 would also give the Cubs the tiebreaker If we go back to 31 games remaining in the 2018 season we would find the Cubs at 78-53 leading the Cardinals (74-58) by 4.5 games and the Brewers (73-60) by 6. (7 in the loss column). A Cubs fan might have said "If the Cubs can just go 16-15, the Cards would have to go 20-10 just to tie them" If they were thinking about the Brewers at all they would have said that the Brewers would have to go 21-8 just to tie. That would probably have been considered unthinkable for a team that had been losing more than half of their games since mid May. We all know what happened. The Cubs went 17-14 in their last 31 games, but the Brewers, helped by going 4-2 against the Cubs, went 22-7 to charge past the Cardinals and force the glorious Game 163. So, yes, the Brewers are in great shape. But it's still "one day at a time". The next 16 games are going to say a lot about what the last 15 will be like.
  17. Big week to set up the showdown 7 against the Cubs. Would love to go into that with a lead of at least 7. The DBacks have to be looking at their series with the Cubs as an opportunity to improve their position in the wild card race.
  18. OK. But even if that happens and he’s tagging up there would be a close play at second and you’d have runners on first and second instead of second and third. With both fielders that close instead of one backing up the other a ball hitting the wall might have bounced past both of them.
  19. I’ll get over it, but it still bugs me that the Brewers had to give up a home game to play in this event. There’s obviously no guarantee, but I think the Brewers chances of winning would have been better playing on a familiar field (one without chunks of turf coming up on an infield grounder) in familiar surroundings with the home crowd behind them. If this game ends up costing the Brewers a tiebreaker against the Braves I’m really going to be ticked. The season series against the Braves might be a preview of a division series matchup and,, except for the one game the Brewers won in a rout, they were the type of low scoring games you would have to expect.
  20. Turang was correctly going halfway. If that ball had hit the wall and bounced away he might have been able to score.
  21. Disappointing that the Brewers couldn’t do anything with a pitcher with an ERA over 4
