Brewers sign Eric Thames (3 years)
Madhawk23 replied to jerichoholicninja's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I haven't read through the previous 11 pages of this thread, so I do apologize if this has been brought up already. In looking at Thames, it's very clear to see that this is one strong dude. My question is: was he this strong during his last stint in the Majors? Did he get big over in Korea, or has he always been this big? I hate to ever speculate on PED's with any ballplayer, but after what we've been through over the past 20 years in MLB and what we as Brewer fans had to go through with the Braun fiasco - it just popped into my head over the weekend as I'm watching this huge man hit 5 bombs in a 4 game series. Trust me - I don't want to have these thoughts go through my head, but I also don't want to deal with the news that any of our players have been suspended 50 games for any kind of drug use. So, please someone - ease my mind on Thames and tell me that he's just always been an extremely large human being! -
I think you'd have to get a haul for Thames though if you are trading him this year. I realize you want to strike while the iron is hot with his value, but I also wouldn't give him up for anything less than a major prospect haul in return right now. Obviously, it's still early and he still could fall on his face the rest of this year, but certainly an amazing start. Let's ride this out and see what the next few months bring for him. If he's hit 20+ bombs at the AS break with a .280 average and .400+ OBP, then we might have more to talk about at that point in time. Still though, I'd have to be completely blown away if I'm Stearns. Still though, wouldn't it be great to have all of these options.

What could Braun bring from anyone? (2017 version)
Madhawk23 replied to pete's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
OK - I know it's way too early for trade talks to heat up, but what type of package would Stearns need in return if the Giants came calling about Braun and someone like Knebel (assuming he continues to pitch well)? I know their system isn't great to begin with, but would a package return of Beede, Arroyo and Fabian be too much to ask if we were giving up both Braun and Knebel? This would completely gut an already think farm system for the Giants, so I doubt they'd pull the trigger. Also, not sure what the upside really is for Beede or Arroyo? -
It would be great to have another Brandon Woodruff story happen again this year, where a pitcher seems to come out of nowhere to earn Top 100 prospect status by the the end of the year. My potential candidates would be: Zach Brown Trey Supak Josh Pennington Braden Webb Nash Walters I know all of these guys may not be necessarily considered "under the radar," but I would say that it would be a great story if just one of them could make a Woodruff-like leap here in 2017.

I heard a lot of positive things about Zach Clark this offseason. Does anyone know where he'll start the season this year? Wasn't he a JUCO signee? I guess I expected someone of his age to make it up to Appleton this year. Is he most likely starting in Helena in July? Just curious if anyone has any info on him.
-
So, what teams do we think might be the biggest suitors for Guerra this summer? Obviously, I realize we need to let the season play out here to see which teams are in contention and need pitching. But, is there a list of 2-3 teams that we can start to look at? Houston is the obvious, since it sounds like they are already sniffing around for more pitching help. I'm a bit surprised to see the Braves in these discussions though.

It quietly appears that the Rockies are trying to make a move this offseason to go head to head with the Dodgers and Giants next year. With LA being conservative with their prospects, and with the Giants not having enough quality prospects in their system to make many moves, is there any way we could pull off a deal with the Rockies? I know they have Parra in LF, but I wonder if they'd consider an upgrade there with Braun, and use Parra as more of a utility OF that can play all three positions if needed? Or, maybe they could then move Parra in a separate deal for another need? Also, would they have any interest in someone like Guerra to help their rotation? I know that Junior probably needs to prove himself for another few months for teams to really value him, but you know that the Rockies are always looking for pitching help - and perhaps Juniors stuff would work well in Co? Just spit-balling here, but, curious to get others thoughts on them as a trade partner? With LA and SF not really improving their rosters this offseason, maybe the Rockies see a golden opportunity to go "all-in?" They certainly have some intriguing prospects at the top of their system.

What could Braun bring from anyone? (2017 version)
Madhawk23 replied to pete's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Meh....not sure if I'd like that deal. Puk has potential, but there is also a chance he never makes it to the big leagues. If dealing with the A's, I think the package would have to start with Chapman & Puk in the deal. And, I'd offer to eat some of Braun's contract if they wanted to throw in another good piece. Again though, I doubt the A's would ever want to do a deal like this when they are not that close to putting together a winning big league team. -

Is Brett Eibner really the Dodgers answer to their OF issues? C'mon LA - your time to win is now, and you have the money and the prospects to make a deal for Braun. Heck, we'd even be willing to take a bad contract off of your hands. As currently constructed, I don't think that team is at the caliber of the Cubs yet. Seems like they should go "all in" and risk a bit of their future to take their chances right now. Am I the only one puzzled by this? -

Did I dream it or were they actually up 2 games to 1 over the Cubs in the NCLS a few months ago? Couldn't you make the argument though that Braun's bat in the middle of that lineup could have made the difference in that series? Maybe the Dodgers are WS champs right now if they had pulled the trigger on the Brewers demands for a Braun trade back in August? We'll never know of course. -
Reds get 3 prospects for Straily
Madhawk23 replied to JohnBriggs12's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Am I the only one that would expect more in a return for Guerra? Keep in mind, I certainly haven't seen any of these three kids the Reds got for Straily, but just looking at their numbers from this past year left me a bit unimpressed. And, isn't the Marlins system considered to be a pretty weak system? Two 24 year old pitchers, neither of which appear to be "sure thing" starting pitchers down the road, and then one 20 yr old OF that hit a tick over .200 last year. Again - I think this is a decent haul for someone like Straily, but I think we can get more if Guerra goes out and puts up similar numbers before the trade deadline this year. Considering that Drew Pomeranz netted a top 20 prospect like Anderson Espinoza last year at the deadline, I think Guerra could fetch us something similar if there is a team desperate enough for SP at the deadline this July. Of course, first things first - we need Guerra to go out and pitch well and stay healthy. -

Oh - I guess I thought I read that he had added a team to those that he could be traded to (without his veto power)? Maybe I'm wrong though? -

Madhawk23 replied to pete's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I know it was brought up a few pages ago, and I know we have no idea who the "mystery" team is that Braun added to his "OK to be traded to" list this offseason. But, let's say hypothetically it was the Toronto Blue Jays (since somebody reported that his wife is apparently from there?). What would be a reasonable trade package with Toronto? Do they have any bad contracts that they are looking to get rid of that we could take back to sweeten the prospect package coming back our way? Again, I know this is all hypothetical as we can only assume that Braun still has them on his no-trade list, but if they don't bring back Bautista it would appear that they still would have a major need for a power bat/corner outfielder. How about this: Blue Jays get Braun (perhaps the Brewers pick up some of the money remaining on his contract) Brewers get Reid-Foley, Tellez and Pentecost Is this too much of a return to expect for Braun if we were dealing with the Jays? I'm guessing that Vlad Jr. is probably off limits at this point, since his stock appears to be soaring right now. -

Madhawk23 replied to pete's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Honestly, I would have liked Seattle as a trade partner on Braun before yesterday - as I would have wanted Gohara in the package coming back. I think we really need at least one high upside arm coming back in any Braun deal, and Gohara is really the only pitching prospect in their system that would really excite me right now (at least above the A ball level). I think any deal with the Mariners would have had to have included Lewis and Gohara, and now one of those big pieces is gone. What is everyone's thoughts about the Giants? They could still use a big bat in the middle of their lineup. What would we need to get back from them in a trade, as I know that their system isn't exactly oozing with talent right now. Is Beede anything more than a mid-rotation guy down the road? What's the upside on guys like Shaw and Reynolds? -
What could Braun bring from the Dodgers?
Madhawk23 replied to SandyTolan's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I don't know how willing the Twins are to take on bad contracts, but I heard Brian Dozier's name linked to the Dodgers today as well, as he would certainly help the Dodgers at a major position of need (2B) and give them the RH power bat that they desire. So, the Twins could be our biggest competitor here in making a trade with LA - if they are looking to deal Dozier, and he of course would be much cheaper than Braun. Let's hope LA desires Braun more than Dozier. Too bad Scooter wasn't a right handed bat that crushed LHP, instead of the other way around. -

888, I would have agreed with you completely before the PED fiasco 3-4 years ago with Braun. Yes, he's pretty much done all the right things ever since then, but his legacy as an all-time great went out the window at that time, and because of that I'm not as invested in having him retire as a Brewer anymore. Generally, I agree with you that I'd prefer not to have to send money to a team like LA or to eat salary in the way of a guy like McCarthy or Puig, but in this situation I would be OK with it. As long as we get really good prospect package in return. In my above example, we'd be getting one of the best power bats in the minors in Bellinger (and a position of need in our system), a potential top of the rotation starter down the road in Buehler and our future catcher in Smith (another position of need in our system). If they want to give us Alvarez instead of Bellinger, then we'd be getting two potential top of the rotation starters in this deal. If Adam Eaton is worth Giolito, Lopez and Dunning, then Braun and Scooter have to be worth this package (especially with us eating these bad contracts). -

Madhawk23 replied to SandyTolan's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
That's why I think we are the absolute perfect partner for them because we should have the ability to eat a bad contract or two the next couple of years here since our payroll is going to be so low. I realize it isn't my money, but if you were already planning to pay Braun his salary the next couple of years, what does it really matter if that money is going to be allocated to guys like Puig and McCarthy? Sure, neither are as good or productive as Braunie, but if that is the price we have to pay in order to get a couple of good prospects back, then sign me up! Who says no to this deal: LA gets: Braun Scooter MIL gets: Kazmir or McCarthy Puig Bellinger or Alvarez Buehler Will Smith Am I getting my expectations too high here on what we could expect in return? -

Madhawk23 replied to SandyTolan's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Great summary Splitter! This just makes too much sense for me. I know it's not my money, but why not take back a bad contract (Kazmir or McCarthy) and a guy that might need a change of scenery (Puig) in this deal for Braun - as long as you do get the prospect package that you want coming back as well. LA gets the RH power bat that they desperately need while also not adding much in payroll, and we get (hopefully) a couple of good prospects and a bit of a lottery ticket at this time in Puig. Here's my question though: how interested do we think the Dodgers might be in Scooter? Obviously, they have a need at 2B and we have one we are trying to get rid of. So, can we sweeten the deal going back to LA and get a better prospect package coming back to Milwaukee? -
Couldn't agree more. With the way we are using the ball and glove more and more these days, why not just make the switch back to it permanently? If you want to use more of the darker blue and gold as your primary colors, then fine. But, we have one of the most iconic and creative logos in the history of sports, so why wouldn't you want to use that all of the time? Instead of this 50/50 deal now between the old and the new.

Boy, this has to be one of the hardest decisions of the offseason for DS. You've got a guy who is under team control now for many years (albeit at an older age due to his unique situation), and pitched like a true ace pitcher last year after getting called up. Yet, there is also that risk with his age and his history, that makes you a bit nervous about holding onto him and not taking advantage of what might be his peak value right now? If a team offers you a Top 50 prospect, or even one Top 100 prospect and another borderline Top 100 guy - you'd have to pull the trigger on that, right? I mean, if you can turn a guy that you picked up off the scrap heap last winter for big time prospects, you'd be dumb not to do that, right? Still though, it would be hard to see the Brewers part ways with a guy that looked so good this past year and is under control for many more years. Because of that, I'd demand a lot if I were DS.
-
I don't think you are going to have anyone here that disagrees with you. I think we are all just antsy fans that are living in this hypothetical "dream world" in which Braun would agree to waive his no-trade clause to Houston. Otherwise yes - there is no need for Stearns and Co. to have any kind of dialogue with the Astros concerning Braun.
-
I think any deal involving Braun to the Astros would have to start with either Martes or Paulino, right? My opinion, is that we really need to get one high end arm in a deal for Braun, and preferably have that arm be close to the major leagues - to mitigate some of that risk. I'll go: Astros get: Ryan Braun (option year turns into a player option in return for Braun waiving the no-trade clause) 14 million dollars Brewers get: RHP - Francis Martes or David Paulino 3B - JD Davis 1B-Yordan Alvarez

I think we all want to compete for a playoff spot as soon as possible, but this just doesn't make any sense for where this franchise currently is. I'd love to win next year just as much as the next Brewer fan, but if we really want to build a franchise here that might be able to sustain success, then we need to allow DS the opportunity to finish the rebuilding process - and I think that is going to require at least one more year of losing. I think we have to trade Braun this winter and get good value in return (even if it means eating $$ or a bad contract in the deal), and then potentially look at dealing Guerra and Thornburg at the deadline next summer, if both guys have strong first halves. We need to continue to stockpile as much young talent as we possibly can, and then just sit back and hope that many of them turn into quality big league players (and that at least 1-2 of them develop into all star caliber). Then, in a couple of years we can look to hit the free agent market and look to potentially trade some of our excess young talent if there is clearly a window to go for a championship.
-
Listen, I'm all for maximizing Braun's value, and I realize that now is the time to act in order to do that. However, I also don't want to settle for some B or C level offer for him. Despite his past transgressions, he proved this year that he's still one of the best hitters in baseball (when healthy of course), and I feel like he should be valued in that way. I understand though that it's very tricky for all of us to fully figure out what type of value other teams have for Braun due to the "baggage" that he brings with him. I guess that's why I'd be OK eating money or bringing back a bad contract in return for the guy. It's not like we can't afford a bad contract right now with as low as our payroll will be for the next couple of years, and we were planning on paying Braun that money anyway.
-
What are the chances we could get either DeLeon or Alvarez from the Dodgers in a Braun deal? Do we think that one of these two guys were in the initial talks before the 8/31 deadline?
