  1. I'm afraid that the Stearns would be hung up on immediately if he offered that up to the Indians. Mejia and McKenzie are two of the best prospects in baseball. Maybe they'd give up those two guys to the Marlins for both Realmuto/Yelich, but no way they are giving them up for Santana and Ponce.
  2. Anyone else see this trade idea posted over at Reviewing the Brew: https://reviewingthebrew.com/2017/12/16/milwaukee-brewers-perfect-trade-dbacks/ I doubt there is any way that the Dbacks part ways with Robbie Ray, but I'm curious to get everyone's thoughts on the 2nd option? Personally, I'd be all for that deal from the Brewers perspective, which has me wondering if I'm wearing my Brewer goggles on this one and if the Dbacks would shoot that down in a heartbeat?
  3. OK - so, I'll play along here. How about: Brewers get: Realmuto and Starlin Castro (to take back some salary relief) Dbacks get: Villar, Ortiz and either Dubon or Isan Diaz Does that deal get it done, or is it likely the Fish will get a better offer out there?
  4. Now that most of the pen options appear to be off the board, what is realistic for us to expect at this point? Who's still out there? I know Stearns doesn't seem to want to spend 14 mil+ for 2 years on a guy, but if that's the market right now - don't we need to go out and get someone? Would a guy like Addison Reed demand even more than that? I wouldn't mind adding him as our 8th inning guy, but I'm guessing it is doubtful due to what he will command.
  5. Reports surfacing that he might be the next Marlin to be traded. Do we want him? What would it take to get him? He's certainly not the TOR arm that everyone is looking for, but he should be relatively cheap for 3-4 more years of control and he'd probably fit nicely into that #4 spot in the rotation right now. Thoughts?
  6. OK - thanks for talking me off the ledge. I agree that we shouldn't do anything stupid, just to say we made a move. But, I guess I've just bought into all of the outside hype that we might be one of the more active teams this week. And like someone else pointed out - it irks me that the Cubs continue to make what appears to be very smart moves with their roster.
  7. I have complete trust that Stearns is going to make smart offers/moves for the long term benefit of our organization, but man I'm starting to get a little impatient here as we're in the final hours of the winter meetings now with no moves to speak of. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Cards have each done multiple things already to improve their rosters for 2018. I know stuff can and will get done after these meetings conclude, but I had high hopes that we might be active this week.
  8. Sounds like it is Alcantara and then three lower valued prospects. If that's the case, it would appear that the Cards did pretty well in this trade, as I would have thought that they'd have to give up at least two prospects in their systems Top 10. Marlins continue to make head scratching moves. Any chance we approach them regarding Strailey? Would he be a good option for our rotation?
  9. I'd love to have Yelich too, but I just don't see how this would work out for us - as we need starting pitching much more right now. I just don't think we can give the Marlins the haul they'd want for Yelich and still have enough to go out and get a starting pitcher. Unless if we plan to get our SP through F/A and not via a trade, which I guess is possible. But, it would still be odd for us to go out and get a guy like Yelich when we already have an abundance of OF's to begin with.
  10. What type of deal do we think it would take to get him from AZ? Does he just have two years left before F/A?
  11. Anyone else going to Twitter every 5 minutes hoping to see big news about a Brewers trade for Archer. Man, not sure if I can take the suspense of this any longer. And I'm sure I'll end up getting kicked in the balls when the Cubs swoop in and steal Archer from us.
  12. Yeah, I mean who's really going to give up anything of significance for this guy in a trade? You only get him for one year (even if he does turn it around), and he's been an absolute disaster over the past year+.
  13. Yeah, this absolutely sucks. I know it's more money than what you'd like to give to a guy that doesn't have numbers that blow you away, but his numbers away from Coors Field would suggest that he's going to be a much better pitcher now that he's out of that environment. And of course Theo makes what appears to be another smart move for the Cubs. Ugh.
  14. Haven't a lot of those Braves prospects already signed with other teams? I'd love to pick up one of those guys, but I've heard nothing yet to suggest we are in on any of them. If not - why not trade the money to one of the Ohtani teams for a prospect? Just not the Cubs.
  15. I see the Twins made a couple of creative trades yesterday giving up some of their international pool (from this year) to the Angels and Mariners, so that those two teams would have more to offer Ohtani. Do we have any money left in our pool? If so, would it make sense for us to do something similar? The Twins picked up two guys that are probably going to fit into their Top 30 prospect list, so seems like a good deal for them.
  16. I think the points about overspending on a F/A or two instead of trading away our prospects for a guy like Duffy are probably all good ones. I agree that I'd rather hold onto as many of our prospects as we can, unless if you can use a few of them to go out and get a TOR type guy that you'd control for 3-4 years. In looking at Duffy's numbers, he clearly is not that type of a TOR guy.
  17. Because it likely is the realistic starting point for what it will take to get a TOR pitcher. Whether it's Archer and TB, Duffy and KC or Stroman and Toronto, if I were a GM of any of those teams, those two are at the top of my interest list and are almost mandatory in any trade discussions. Exactly why I threw their names in there to start the discussion. I guess my feeling is: if we want to try to hold onto Brinson, then we probably have to give up a guy like Harrison instead. And, if we want to trade for a potential TOR starter, then I'm guessing we'll have to throw our best pitching prospect in the deal as well - which is why I included Burnes. Honestly though, I'm not sure if I'm willing to give up two big pieces like this for Duffy? I'd probably do it for Archer or Stroman, but I'm not crazy about what I'm seeing with Duffy's numbers.
  18. Now that it seems official that the Royals are entering a rebuild, what would it take to get Danny Duffy? Would everyone put him a notch below a Archer or Stroman? You'd have four years of control of the guy, but he also hasn't put up ridiculous numbers either thus far in his career. Solid numbers, but not any that jump off the page at you. 2014 and 2016 were good years, but then his numbers fell back a bit in 2015 and 2017. Would you give up a Burnes/Harrison package for someone like Duffy, or is that too much/too little? Anyone else on that Royals team that you'd like to see the Brewers make a run at?
  19. Ummm....I'm pretty sure that Broxton is going to be a ways down the Giants backup plans for their OF if they don't (or should I say, when they don't) get a deal done for Stanton. I think we'd be lucky to get two lottery ticket type prospects for Broxton.
  20. I know I'm probably reaching here, but how about a deal like this with the Marlins: Brewers get Yelich, Straily and Gordon Marlins get: Brinson, Ortiz, Isan Diaz, and Villar Is this not nearly enough for the Marlins to give up three good MLB players still under team control for a few years? Then, go out and get Alex Cobb, Tommy Hunter, Swarzak and Avila in F/A C - Pena, Avila 1B - Thames, Aguilar 2B - Gordon SS - Arcia 3B - Shaw INF - Sogard INF/OF - Perez LF - Braun CF - Yelich RF - Santana OF - Phillips SP - Davies SP - Anderson SP - Woodruff SP - Straily SP - Cobb RP - Knebel, Hader, Hunter, Swarzak, Jeffress, Suter, Barnes I'm guessing this would put our payroll at around 100 mil next year. I know we still wouldn't have a true ACE in the rotation, but I'd have to think that this rotation, lineup and bullpen would have us competing for the top spot in the NL Central for the next few years.
  21. So, what would the package have to be from the Brewers to get this guy? I'm guessing the Rays will be asking for a king's ransom in return - and are we really going to be willing to give them that? I'm guessing multiple teams will get involved as well, so that will only drive up his value even more.
  22. While I doubt this happens (from either side), I actually brought up the idea of trading Knebel to ATL this offseason in another thread a few weeks ago. So, with Houston potentially looking at getting a closer this offseason to replace Giles, I wouldn't be opposed to something like this. We could then go out and try to pick up a closer like Wade Davis to replace Knebel - since we have payroll flexibility - and still make a run at the playoffs next year. With this said though - there's nothing stopping the Astros from going out and getting a guy like Wade Davis, and keeping their prospects. But, Knebel would save them quite a bit of money and a controllable piece for a few years. As much as I love what Knebel did this past year, the volatility of relievers really scares me - and I'm all for capitalizing on their value when it is at its highest.
  23. I agree that relying on Swarzak scares me. I just worry about guys who all of a sudden have career year's when they are 30+ - especially pen guys, since we know how volatile bullpen arms can be anyway. I would not want to give him a 3 year deal, and I'd honestly be a bit worried about a 2 year deal as well - but I'm sure some team will give him 2 years based off of what he did in 2017.
  24. I'd be all for going after a guy like Tyler Chatwood. Here's a guy who is entering his prime years, and has seemingly put up some solid numbers the past two seasons after coming back from TJ surgery - and his road numbers outside of Coors this past season appear to be significantly better than his home numbers. Seems like a guy that could really flourish outside of that hitters environment in Colorado. Man, even if you could get him for 3 years, 27-30 million - I think he might be worth the gamble. And, much less of a gamble then giving Arrieta 100 million for 4 years! I also like Tommy Hunter for that 2 year 12 million deal, but I'm guessing other teams would like that as well - which leads me to believe that he'd get more. But, if we could get Chatwood, Hunter and Swarzak signed this offseason - that would be a pretty solid haul in my opinion. Then, maybe you find another younger SP in a trade - and you'd really be set going into 2018. Even without a trade, you could go with a rotation of: Anderson, Davies, Chatwood, Woodruff, Guerra/Suter/Jungmann - and you just hope you get Nelson back mid-season. Then, you'd have a pen of Knebel, Hunter, Swarzak, Hader (I'd prefer we just turn him into a light's out lefty in the pen), Barnes, Jeffress. That's pretty solid.
  25. I see that Jungmann was brought up in the "2018 Starting Rotation" thread, but I'm wondering if Jungmann couldn't be a possible bullpen piece next year? Is he the type of guy that could find an extra mph or two on his fastball if he went full time to the pen? Is it possible at all that he could become a Wade Davis type, or is that completely out of the realm of possibility? I guess I'm not familiar enough with Jungmann's overall "stuff" compared to Davis's? Just thinking out loud though if Jungmann couldn't become a solid pen guy, since he hasn't quite made it as a starter yet.
