  1. Felt good to root AGAINST Beltran again...but these Yanks coming back. It's never easy. (sigh)
  2. Snow in May was the reason I moved out of GF! What did you do here? Shoot me a PM if you don't want to say it publicly. Sent.
  3. That's certainly true, but you know that there's 9 innings to go, and having a challenge left LATE could loom LARGE by comparison.
  4. What!? No game thread yet? It's the Yankees! BTW, I have a standing bet with a friend vs. Yanks whenever we can both watch the game on TV. So for whatever it's worth I'm betting on you guys today. Yanks 1. Brett Gardner (L) LF 2. Derek Jeter ® SS 3. Jacoby Ellsbury (L) CF 4. Mark Teixeira (S) 1B 5. Kelly Johnson (L) 3B 6. Yangervis Solarte (S) 2B 7. Ichiro Suzuki (L) RF 8. John Ryan Murphy ® C 9. David Phelps ® P Brews 1. Carlos Gomez ® CF 2. Logan Schafer (L) RF 3. Rickie Weeks ® 2B 4. Lyle Overbay (L) 1B 5. Mark Reynolds ® 3B 6. Khris Davis ® LF 7. Jean Segura ® SS 8. Martin Maldonado ® C 9. Matt Garza ® P
  5. I blame this insane practice on Tony La Russa. Since he "invented" the closer in Eckersly and rode the double switch into the ground all the managers have been trying to show that they are smart too. He would use the entire bullpen often. It was maddening.
  6. It was hot for a while Rick, but since Braun went down it's cooled off some. Stay around 1st place and it will return. I noticed last night that the entire Central was 6-4 in their last 10! So the Brews have lost no ground in the last 10 games. Amazin'! I haven't been able to catch many games lately, but I'm guessing that ARam isn't hitting yet. I know SOMEBODY is though. I think the Reds have stared making their move. And Chapman looms.
  7. That business of pitchers winning both prizes is just wrong. (sorry Gibson) How can you compare a pitcher to a position player? It's not apples and oranges, it's night and day.
  8. Close' date=' but it was the Cards that had the most wins in the combined halves. Odd that the Brews and Cards both got retribution the very next year.[/quote] Actually it was the Reds: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1981/Y_1981.htm Reds: 66-42 Cards: 59-43-1 Regardless - They both had the best overall record in their respective divisions and neither went to the playoffs. Good trivia questions. _______________________________________________________________ I knew that the Cardinals had the best record in the East because it was a sore spot for fans for years. The Deckinger blown call in '85 made us forget about it. I had surely forgotten that the Ohio Reds were in the West.
  9. [quote="Patrick425"} The team that really got the shaft in 1981 was the Reds. They finished 2nd in their division in both halves and did not make the playoffs even though I believe they had the best record in baseball (if you combined the two halves). Close, but it was the Cards that had the most wins in the combined halves. Odd that the Brews and Cards both got retribution the very next year.
  10. I'm no fan of it in any situation except to squeeze in the winning run. I'm not a huge fan of bunting either but if you have no outs, a runner on second and a tie game in extras it's a no brainer. I know that's the opinion of baseball purist's. My thinking is that you never surrender an out under any circumstances. I've seen too many disastrous outcomes of failed attempts, and even more where a "successful" bunt yielded nothing.
  11. I'm no fan of it in any situation except to squeeze in the winning run.
  12. BP's blast is making this game a nail biter. I really don't know who I'm supposed to root for in this game, so I'm just going to sit back and enjoy a game that the Cards can't lose!
  13. Just dropped in to see who did the damage in the Brews lead as I just turned on the TV in time to see Davis jerk one out. Congrats to those of you not disgusted with golf yet and have something better to do on a beautiful Sunday afternoon than watch the tube. But I'm here to kibbitz if anybody's around.
  14. LOL, I can assure you that he's far from that these days. As the TV play by play announcer Cards fans cringed for years. He was simply awful. Hardly the bravado figure he enjoyed as a player. I began disliking him when he blurted out, on the air, that Ted may have been a good hitter, "but was far from the sharpest tool in the shed". That comment was the beginning of the end for him. With the owners bending to the fans unrest they gave the word to FSMW that the Mad One had to go. Unfortunately his replacement was Tim Mc Carver. But I suppose he's the lesser of.... (and a vocal proponent for Simmons and Torre for the HOF)
  15. My Brew.net namesake had an interesting game invloving Bill Matlock and Mad Hungarian, Al Hraboski 40 years ago. I have no memory of it, but it is worth a look. A truly bizarre brawl born of pure baseball gamesmanship run amuck. You may have seen the odd image of TWO batters at the plate as the pitch zips in and.....oh, just check it out. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24548529/just-because-the-1974-cubs-cardinals-brawl (Cubs go for the sweep tonite on national TV)
  16. Show boating is frowned upon in all sports. We are taught as children to show humility when you've got the other guy down. Not being raised south of the border I can't speak for them, but I have to think that this principle is not as prevalent...the machismo thing and all. The term "hot blooded Latino" was coined as a libido inference, but has expanded to include exuberance and explosive temper. It's a real thing. Now relocate a Latino to the greatest country in the hemisphere and stuff a million dollars in his pocket. I'm surprised that incidents aren't more prevalent. I like the little outbursts where no one comes to harm. Baseball can be a boring affair at times, and confrontations kicks things up a notch. Just don't over do it.
  17. The Reds were pitiful at the plate. Taking nothing from Peralta, but they showed me nothing that would reflect the significance of this series with the Div. leader. Know what I mean?
