  1. Carolina 4, Down East 3 (10 innings) Mudcats Walk-Off In Extras to Win Third Straight Keston Hiura scored on a wild pitch in the tenth as the Mudcats walked-off the Wood Ducks A good start from Trey Supak. Both runs he gave up came after he left the game. He was one pitch away from getting out of the 7th inning when he walked a man on a very close pitch. Nattino Diplan then gave up a 3 run home run. This is the first time I have seen Alec Crawford pitch. He was signed out of independent ball. He comes from the U. of Minnesota. He has a bit of zip to his fastball with quite a bit of run to it. Also a big curveball which he struggled to control in this game. He made a miraculous escape in the 10th inning from runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. The Wood Ducks pinch ran for the 2nd base runner in the 10th but he failed to score on a double off the wall by the first hitter. Weston Wilson made a pretty good show of maybe catching that ball and played the carom well to hold the man at 3rd. Crawford then struck out the next two hitters and retired the next man to escape the inning and get the win. Keston Hiura is starting to take right handers to right field a bit more. He had been trying to pull quite a bit when he was going bad. It looks like he has figured that out now and is really taking off. Trey Supak 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K Nattino Diplan 1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K Alec Crawford 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K Keston Hiura 3-5, 2 2B Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Down East Top of the 10th Charles Leblanc starts inning at 2nd base. 2. Carolina 9, Down East 6 Hiura and Carroll Have Career Nights in 9-6 Victory Hiura and Carroll set career highs in hits and RBI in 9-6 win versus Wood Ducks The bullpen performed admirably in the final five innings to back up the hitting. 3. Carolina 7, Myrtle Beach 0 Mudcats End Skid with 7-0 Shutout Victory Conor Harber and the Carolina pen led the Mudcats to a losing streak snapping victory Conor Harber is so frustrating. Here he took 88 pitches to go 4 1/3 innings. He has good stuff but the command is often not there. He started tonight's game with 9 balls in the first 10 pitches. Anyway, the Mudcats still got the win with three relievers finishing the shutout. Mitch Ghelfi at catcher today and managed to get two hits and a stolen base along the way. It's hard to see where he will get at bats with three catchers and Hiura being the steady DH. He should probably go up to Biloxi if they have room. 4. Nice story. The young man involved is the brother of Weston Wilson. He hits a last second shot to win a basketball game with a twist. Link
  5. I thought Sanchez looked good the first time I saw him. Then there was one outing where he gave up three tape measure home runs in something like 4 batters. He needs to keep his pitches down unless they are convinced the hitter will be surprised by a high strike.
  6. Myrtle Beach 3, Carolina 0 Mudcats Blanked by Birds 3-0 in Myrtle Beach The Mudcats suffered their sixth straight loss while losing 3-0 to the Pelicans The Mudcats managed only 4 hits while striking out 12 times. Cam Roegner struggled through 5 innings with poor fastball command giving up 9 hits and 3 walks although only 2 runs. The Mudcats staff has allowed more walks than any other team in the Minor Leagues. Luis Aviles Jr. had two of the hits. Tucker Neuhaus had the night off. 8. As it stands, it looks like Derby game 1, Burnes, then Peralta. After that anybody's guess.
  9. Down East 6, Carolina 3 Mudcats Swept in Three Straight in Kinston Weston Wilson homered for the second straight game, but the Mudcats lost 6-3 in Kinston Trey Supak took a no hitter into the 5th inning but couldn't make it through 6 today. With Nathan Kirby and Braden Webb only able to go 3 innings or less, it really puts some stress on the bullpen. The Mudcats gave up runs in each of the last three innings today. Rob Henry is making a bid (small sample alert) to be the anti-Dubon. Going into today's game, he had an OBP of .455 without the benefit of a hit. He drew 3 more walks today while making one out. Weston Wilson homered today for his 3rd in the last two days. Trey Supak 5 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K Luke Barker 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K (Huh??) 10. Down East 5, Carolina 4 Comeback 'Cats Fall 5-4 Despite Late Heroics Weston Wilson hit a game tying home run in the ninth, but the Wood Ducks walked-off again 5-4 A dramatic two out home run by Weston Wilson in the 9th to tie the game went for naught as the Wood Ducks scored in the bottom of the 9th on a controversial two out hit down the third base line. The Mudcats bitterly contested the fair call but the play stood and Chase Williams took the loss for the second day in a row. 11. Down East 9, Carolina 8 Bullpen Collapse Gives Way to 9-8 Loss in Kinston The Mudcats lost a 8-4 lead in the ninth while losing 9-8 to the Wood Ducks The Wood Duck bullpen blanked the Mudcats over the final 6 innings while the Mudcat bullpen couldn't hold a 4 run lead in the 9th. Chase Williams has had spotty command all year and it cost him here. He gave up 3 walks and 4 hits before giving way to Alec Kenilvort, who gave up the final two hits while retiring nobody. Braden Webb could not get out of the 2nd inning. A grand slam by Ryan Aguilar had seemingly put the game under control in the 2nd inning. 17. Buies Creek 3, Carolina 1 Mudcats Come Up Short in 3-1 Loss to Buies Creek Cody Beckman gave up a go-ahead homer in the eighth as the Mudcats fell 3-1 A late inning home run and failure to cash in on their own opportunities resulted in the Mudcats' loss today. Trey Supak worked 5 innings and lowered his ERA to 0.90 for the year. Something happened in the bottom of the 5th after the first two Mudcats singled. Carlos Belonis came up and attempted to bunt for his first strike. He fouled that off and then hit into a double play. Either he missed a sign or possibly injured himself because Rob Henry replaced him in the field the next inning. In the 7th inning, the Mudcats loaded the bases but a long drive to centerfield by Keston Hiura was caught just short of the warning track to end the inning. 18. Carolina 3, Buies Creek 0 Diplan, Barker and Williams Blank Buies Creek in 3-0 Win Ronnie Gideon hit a two-run home run in Carolina's 3-0 victory versus the Astros A combined 2-hitter by Marcos Diplan, Luke Barker and Chase Williams led the way to a win over the Astros. They did walk 7 between them but spread them out just enough to be effective. A long two run home run by Ronnie Gideon put the game away for the Mudcats. Ryan Aguilar got on base every at bat and made a diving catch in center field and doubled up a runner off first on that play. The Mudcats were just 7-16 against the Astros last year and it could be worse this year. It shows the contrast in the two organizations. Braden Webb threw 83 pitches but couldn't get out of the 3rd inning. Six more stolen bases after six yesterday. Webb didn't even look at the runner a couple of times. 12 more strike outs for the hitters today to increase their league lead. 20. Buies Creek 8, Carolina 4 Mudcats Waste Late Lead in 8-4 Loss Keston Hiura went 2-for-5 with his first home run of the season in the loss Keston Hiura had a good night for Carolina but Cam Roegner couldn't match his first two starts and the Mudcat bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Roegner threw 79 pitches in less than three innings and had to come out of the game. Buies Creek, much like the parent Astros, is a very patient team and were also able to foul off a number of strike two pitches to extend at bats. A home run by Ronnie Dawson in the third was the first run given up by Roegner this year after 15 scoreless innings. The Mudcats struck out 14 times, a statistic in which they lead the league. The Astros stole six bases in the game, four off Roegner.
