Link Report for Sunday 8/16 -- Helena Has Lost 17 of 20
WV Brew replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Omar Garcia beaned by Nick Travieso in the 3rd inning. He is ambulatory. Umpire called it a strike? I guess they are saying he swang. Coulter was DHing so they will lose that probably as he is the 4th outfielder. Unless Halcomb comes in in the OF. Meanwhile Hellweg has a 3 inning no hitter going but 6 walks so I don't think he will make it through. Halcomb stayed in playing LF, Ratterree moves to CF, Pena in RF. Hellweg has now drilled one of the Tortugas so look out. -

Felix Lopez was hired as a landscaper by Steinbrenner's second husband Joe Molloy. And just like Molloy, Lopez shot up to the executive level within the New York baseball franchise following the marriage. And last month history appeared to repeat itself once again last month as he, just like Molloy before him, lost his Yankees post right along with his wife. Jessica is pictured left with Lopez and right with previous husband Molloy. Is this why the Yankees have a left fielder named Gardner?

Doug Melvin steps down as GM; moves into advisory role
WV Brew replied to torts's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
MLB Trade Rumors: Nationals director of player development Doug Harris could emerge as the frontrunner for the Brewers‘ GM job, Cafardo writes. Doug Melvin, who has stepped down as president/GM to take on an adviser role, was the GM in Texas while Harris was an exec there. Cafardo is a writer with the Boston Globe. -
The call was bull and if MLB is going to make this type of overrule, I'd prefer them to dump replay completely. The umpire says they told him Segura never had possession. How do you tell from the replay? It was an umpire judgement call that was incorrectly (in my view) overruled based on supposition and nothing else.

Gabryszwski, Browning Blank Brevard Loveless Shines in 2-0 Dunedin Victory By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 08/15/2015 12:25 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/2/137927482/cuts/Sneed_2_hrilb634_0y6b75bk.JPG Cy Sneed, seen here from a game earlier this season, pitched six innings and allowed just one run on Friday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, FL - Jeremy Gabryszwski dominated over seven shutout innings as the Dunedin Blue Jays (20-27, 52-65 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (20-26, 49-66 overall) 2-0 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. Gabryszwski (8-6, 3.49 ERA) surrendered just three hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out six. Gabryszwski allowed just one man to reach second in his seven innings of work. Wil Browning recorded the final six outs of the ballgame to earn his 18th save of the season. The Blue Jays took the lead against Brevard County starter Cy Sneed in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Derrick Loveless. For Loveless, it was his ninth homer of the season. The Loveless homer was the only mistake Sneed (3-2, 2.60 ERA) made all night. He gave up one run on four hits over six innings. Sneed did not walk a batter and tied a career high with eight strikeouts. Dunedin added an insurance run in the eighth inning against reliever Tristan Archer. Mike Reeves doubled to left field with no outs. After a J.D. Davis sacrifice bunt, Loveless added an RBI single. Archer allowed a run on five hits in three innings of relief. The Manatees and Blue Jays will conclude the series tomorrow night at Space Coast Stadium. RHP Javi Salas (7-8, 4.38 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. Dunedin will send LHP Shane Dawson (1-1, 3.27 ERA) to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Derrick Loveless, like his namesake the evil genius Miguelito from the TV show Wild, Wild West, comes back periodically to menace the good guys. Loveless has 9 home runs on the season, 4 against the Manatees. Cy Sneed was very good again: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 R (the Loveless HR) Garrett Cooper was 2-4 and Michael Ratterree had a double. The Manatees have now faced Gabryszwski 4 times, you'd think they'd be ready for him by now, he's not a hard thrower. Chris McFarland, one of the who's hot guys from Miller Park Prospects, struck out for the 100th time this year in the first inning (468 at bats). He has 25 walks. Brevard County Game Log

Wang, Early Outburst Carry 'Tees in Series Opener By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 08/13/2015 11:20 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/4/143038374/cuts/IMG_0605_vbtpxr0z_o97znow3.JPG Wei-Chung Wang, seen here, tossed six shutout innings in Thursday night's victory. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, FL - The Brevard County Manatees (20-25, 49-65 overall) were the beneficiaries of a strong effort from starting pitching for the second consecutive night in a 4-3 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays (19-27, 51-65 overall) Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees took the initiative right away in the bottom of the first inning against Blue Jays starter Alonzo Gonzalez. The inning started with an Omar Garcia single to center, he then stole second as Chris McFarland struck out. His effort would be rewarded as Clint Coulter ripped a double off of the top of the wall in right center to put the Manatees on top. After Garrett Cooper flew out, Robinzon Diaz slapped a single back through the box to score Coulter and double the lead. Brevard County continued to sizzle at the plate the following inning as Taylor Brennan laced a leadoff triple to center. The Jays would bring the infield in but it backfired as Dustin Houle hit a ball right at Jason Leblebijian at shortstop that went through his legs, allowing Brennan to come home. Insurance would come for the 'Tees in the bottom of the third, which was ignited by a leadoff ground-rule double by Coulter. Cooper got in on the act with a single in to center to score Coulter. Diaz followed with a single and the bases would be loaded with one out when Houle once again reached on an Leblebijian (error). The rally would be short-circuited, however, when Jose Pena hit into a double play to end the inning. That lead would hold until the ninth inning when Dunedin put up a valiant final rally. Stephen Peterson walked Matt Dean to start the inning and would score from first when Mitch Nay followed with a double to right and advanced on the throw. Nay then scored when Derrick Loveless grounded out to first. Peterson would be lifted for Kaleb Earls, who promptly walked Leblebijian. Dickie Joe Thon doubled down the left field line, moving Leblebijian to third. Earls then struck out Jorge Saez and had a full count on Anthony Alford before issuing a wild pitch on ball four that allowed Leblebijian to score and put the tying run at third. However, Earls recovered to strike out J.D. Davis to seal the win and his sixth of the season. Wei-Chung Wang made the 'Tees offensive efforts count by throwing six shutout innings, striking out four and walking one to earn his ninth win of the season. Coulter, Diaz, Garcia and McFarland all recorded multi-hit games for Brevard County. Coulter's two doubles gave him 28 for the season, he also recorded his team-leading 52nd RBI of the season. Cooper drove in his 51st run of the season. The two teams return to action Friday night as RHP Cy Sneed (3-1, 2.77 ERA) will be on the bump against RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (7-6, 3.73 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Kaleb Earls was uncharacteristically wild but got the job done in the end. Brevard County Game Log

Regarding Garrett Cooper--I have never seen him play other than in highlights so that's a proviso. Listening to the games though, I would say he is about average with the glove for 1B. He is 6' 6" though so he has the size. Can he convert some of his doubles power into HR's? I don't think his doubles have generally been on ground balls like Tyrone Taylor had last year. They are mainly gap hits to the wall.

Woodruff's Gem Snaps Losing Streak By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 08/12/2015 10:38 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/6/142829066/cuts/IMG_1873_frq2g4zo_0vne1kfe.JPG Brandon Woodruff, seen here, pitched seven shutout innings on Wednesday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Tampa, FL -The Brevard County Manatees (19-25, 48-65 overall) were able to get back into the win column on Wednesday night thanks to an outstanding effort from their pitching staff to defeat the Tampa Yankees (22-24, 56-60 overall) 1-0 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The game's lone run came in the top of the second inning, which was kick started by a Garrett Cooper base hit. Robinzon Diaz followed with a base hit of his own to move Cooper to second. After Taylor Brennan struck out, Dustin Houle laced a single to left that brought home Cooper with Diaz eventually being tagged out in a run down between second and third. That would be all that was needed as Brandon Woodruff and Preston Gainey combined to keep the Yankees off the board for the night. Tampa would have one runner reach third base, which came with two out in the ninth when Houle's throw to second to throw out Abiatal Avelino went wide. Gainey made sure the error was of little consequence when he got Miguel Andujar to fly out to center to end it. Woodruff turned in his best start of the season throwing seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits, striking out four and walking one on 89 pitches. Gainey give up one hit and struck out three in two innings of work to nail down his sixth save of the season. Offensively, the Manatees got multi-hit games from Cooper and Chris McFarland. The victory ensured that Brevard County won the season series with Tampa, ten games to eight. The Manatees return home on Thursday to begin a three-game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (8-4, 3.91 ERA) will get the start against LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (2-3, 2.86 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Brandon Woodruff the star tonight. He had a 10/4 GO/FO in addition to the stats mentioned in the story. Preston Gainey had his best outing in quite a while also throwing 21 strikes in 25 pitches. Garrett Cooper flirting with .300 continues to have a good year and Dustin Houle hitting .300 as he continues to hit well. Brevard County Game Log

After a Rafael Neda double, Michael Ratterree walked to load the bases. Angel Ortega grounded a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to five. Another Reyes wild pitch plated the sixth run of the inning. Leonora drilled an RBI double to center in the bottom of the sixth to complete the game’s scoring. Stephen Peterson tossed two shutout innings for the Manatees and struck out four. Campos (2-5, 6.21 ERA) earned the win. He allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and fanned six. Angel Rincon threw the final three innings and did not allow a run to notch his eighth save of the season. The Manatees and Yankees will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-5, 4.39 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Tampa will send LHP Chaz Hebert (6-5, 3.39 ERA) to the bump. Brevard County Box Score You really have to wonder why they just keeping running Johnny Hellweg out there. He hasn't been right since about the 2nd game of rehab. Brevard County Game Log

Blue Jays Walk-Off in 7-6 Victory Dunedin Sweeps Brevard County By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 08/09/2015 11:18 PM ET Dunedin, FL - Anthony Alford hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Dunedin Blue Jays (18-24, 50-62 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (18-23, 47-63 overall) 7-6 on Sunday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. With the game tied at six, Jorge Saez led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field against Kaleb Earls. After a sacrifice bunt by Andy Fermin, Alford drilled a game-winning double to center field to complete the sweep for Dunedin. The Manatees originally took the lead in the top of the first. With one out, Chris McFarland singled and came home on a double from Clint Coulter. After Dunedin took a 2-1 lead on a two-run, first-inning homer by J.D. Davis, Brevard County responded immediately in the top of the second. Taylor Brennan singled through the left side to start the frame. After a Michael Ratterree single, Jose Pena singled to left. An error by J.D. Davis allowed Brennan to score, Ratterree to advance to third and Pena to move up to second. Steven Halcomb then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Manatees the lead. The Blue Jays took the lead again in the bottom of the second on consecutive RBI singles from Fermin and Alford. Garrett Cooper drilled a triple to lead off the third and scored on a ground out by Robinzon Diaz. Pena gave the Manatees the lead with a leadoff solo home run in the fourth. It was Pena's second home run of the season. Dunedin took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Derrick Loveless hit a solo homer to deep center off of Brevard County starter Javi Salas. Two batters later, Fermin took Salas deep. After four innings, Dunedin led, 6-5. Salas was lifted after the fourth. He surrendered six runs - five earned - on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five. Salas allowed three solo home runs. Opponents had hit just four homers against Salas entering Sunday's contest. Tyler Spurlin was the first man out of the bullpen for the Manatees. He tossed three shutout frames and allowed just a hit and a walk. With Brevard County trailing 6-5, Dunedin brought in Chris Smith to pitch the top of the eighth inning. On the first pitch of Smith's outing, Pena blasted his second home run of the day to tie the game. Pena finished 4-for-4 with the two long balls. It was the second multi-home run game of the season for the Manatees. Victor Roache had two home runs for Brevard County on May 14 vs. Bradenton. Earls (1-2, 3.24 ERA) took the loss after he allowed the double to Alford in the ninth. Smith (3-1, 0.95 ERA) was credited with the win. Alford finished with four hits, the walk-off double, a triple and two RBI. The Manatees will start a three-game series in Tampa tomorrow. RHP Jorge Ortega (8-7, 2.45 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. The Yankees will send LHP Jordan Montgomery (3-4, 3.39 ERA) to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log

Javi Salas' slide continues. He had given up 4 home runs all year. Today 3 in 4 innings against a very weak hitting team.

Looks like David Denson is starting in RF today. I must say I didn't expect that. Yerison Pena getting a run out at 3rd.

Dunedin Blue Jays beat Manatees in walk-off fashion http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/d9/f5/d9f52356a5e9eb6a25644deeeadc1323.JPG?itok=PSdbU_S5 Cy Sneed pitched seven strong innings on Saturday, but left with a no decision. Dunedin won the game 3-2 in 10 innings. Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography (used with permission) Matt Dean’s walk off single in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday night, sent the Dunedin Blue Jays to a 3-2 win over the visiting Brevard County Manatees in game two of the weekend series. The Manatees loss wasted a great pitching effort by Cy Sneed, who went seven strong innings, allowing only one earned run. He struck out eight and walked one. He struck out the side in the sixth inning and the first batter in the seventh, before giving way to Preston Gainey in the eighth. Brevard County (18-22, 47-62 overall) started the scoring in the third, getting a run against Dunedin starter Alonzo Gonzalez. Angel Ortega drew a one out walk and Omar Garcia singled. Ortega headed for and was sent home when the ball was bobbled by right fielder Derrick Loveless. Ortega made it safely and gave the Manatees a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez left after five innings of three-hit baseball. He allowed one run, walked three and struck out two. He gave way to Ryan Cook, who started the sixth inning. Sneed had given up a single to Dean in the second and was cruising along until the fifth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Sneed gave up a single to Andy Fermin and a walk to Boomer Collins III. Loveless then made up for the error, when he singled to center. Fermin scored and he was followed by Collins, who scored when Garcia booted the ball. Right fielder Clint Coulter picked the ball up and rifled it in to Taylor Brennan at third, who put the tag on Loveless, to end the inning. With Dunedin (49-62) holding on to that 2-1 lead in the seventh, the Manatees offense mounted a two out rally against Cook. Garcia singled and went to second on a balk. He didn’t stay at second long, swiping third base moments later. For Garcia, it was his 44th stolen base of the season. Chris McFarland’s single plated Garcia and tied the game, 2-2. Tees’ reliever Preston Gainey took over for Sneed in the eighth and did a good job for two innings. It was his third inning of relief that was his undoing. L.B. Dantzler led off the 10th with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner J.D. Davis. That brought Dean to the plate and with the infield in at the corners, expecting a bunt, Dean lined a single to center, giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 walk-off victory. Brad Allen (1-3), who pitched three innings of scoreless relief for Dunedin got the win. He allowed only two hits, struck out two and walked one. Gainey took the loss. He fell to 2-3 on the season. The Manatees hope to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Sunday. They will send Javi Salas (7-8, 4.12 ERA) to the mound against Dunedin’s Jeremy Gabryszwski (7-6, 3.55 ERA). The Brewer Nation @BrewerNation 13m13 minutes ago Gord Ash also informed the media this afternoon that @twillyflash needs Tommy John surgery after all. Bad news for a guy whose stock was up. I guess we were expecting this. Still very disappointing. Personally, I think they were wise to try to avoid TJ if possible but now time has been lost.

Blue Jays Staff Dominant in 4-1 Win Reid-Foley, Dragmire Hold 'Tees Hitless For Six Plus By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 08/07/2015 11:25 PM ET Dunedin, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (16-24, 48-62 overall) used an excellent effort from their bullpen to take the series opener 4-1 over the Brevard County Manatees (18-21, 47-61 overall) Friday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. The game's deciding runs came in the bottom of the second, which was ignited by a one-out double from L.B. Dantzler off of Manatees starting pitcher Wei-Chung Wang. After Dickie Joe Thon flew out, Derrick Loveless launched his seventh home run of the season, an opposite-field two run home run blast to put Dunedin on top. The Jays would get some insurance in the fourth with Dantzler starting the rally with a two-out walk. Thon would move him to second on a base hit to left and when Loveless followed with a walk, the bases were loaded for Jorge Saez. Saez slapped a single just past a diving Angel Ortega into left to bring home Dantzler and Thon to double the lead. Wang would avoid further damage when he struck out Anthony Alford to end the inning. The Manatee offense showed signs of life in the top of the seventh when Robinzon Diaz's singled to left with one out for the 'Tees first hit of the game off of Blue Jays reliever Brady Dragmire. Taylor Brennan immediately followed with a double to left that brought Diaz to third base. He would come with the first Manatee when Rafael Neda lifted a sacrifice fly to left. Dragmire would get the final out of the inning and his outing when he got Michael Ratterree to ground out to short. Brevard County put up a valiant last gasp with two out in the top of the ninth against Blue Jays closer Wil Browning. Neda started the charge with an infield single and would move up on a walk to Ratterree. Ortega then reached first to load the bases when Saez was called for catcher's interference. Browning then preserved the victory by inducing an Omar Garcia groundout to short. Dunedin starter Sean Reid-Foley anchored the Blue Jay staff on the night, throwing five and one-third innings of no-hit ball, striking out six and walking four in the process. Browning recorded the four-out save. Offensively, the Jays were led by Saez's three-for-four night at the plate, logging his 10th double of the season in the eighth. Wang gave up four runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out four and walking two. Garcia swiped his 43rd base of the season with a steal of third in the fourth inning. The Manatees will look to bounce back on Saturday night as RHP Cy Sneed (3-1, 3.09 ERA) takes the ball against LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (2-3, 3.23 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. Brevard County Box Score Wei-Chung Wang has been better since the All-Star game but got hit pretty hard in this one. His splits are reversed this year. Right hand hitters are batting .268 with a ground out/air out ratio of 1.25. Left handers are: .308 and 0.51 so he really struggles against lefties. In this game, L.B. Dantzler, a left handed hitter, doubled off Wang in the 2nd. He was then Homered in by Derrick "Miguelito" Loveless, a left handed hitter. In the 4th, both of those hitters walked contributing to the 2 runs they scored there. This is probably why he's been working on his curveball. The changeup is apparently less effective against lefties. Taylor Brennan's double was probably the only hard hit ball for the Manatees in the game. Brevard County Game Log

Manatees getting no-hit through 5 and Wang getting hammered. If you're looking for a game to listen to, you may want to look elsewhere.

Manatees delayed because the umpires failed to show up. (Not making this up). Sounds like they may be going with one umpire (out of the stands?). Now have a second umpire. You got me.

Hellweg, Hirsch Tame Yankees in 2-1 Victory Hellweg Tosses Five No-Hit Innings In Win Brevard County Manatees 08/07/2015 12:12 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/8/6/141668686/cuts/Hellweg_cbolu2o7_qofm563u.JPG Viera, FL - Johnny Hellweg tossed five no-hit innings as the Brevard County Manatees (18-20, 47-60 overall) defeated the Tampa Yankees (18-22, 52-58 overall) 2-1 in front of a crowd of 1779 at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night. Hellweg (1-3, 7.20 ERA) allowed one run over five innings without allowing a hit to earn the victory. He walked four and struck out three. With the Yankees leading 1-0, the Manatees scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Dustin Houle led things off with a single to right field. Jose Pena then reached on an infield single. After a Steven Halcomb sacrifice bunt, Omar Garcia stepped to the plate with two runners in scoring position and one out. Garcia drilled a two-run single up the middle to plate both Houle and Pena. Garcia and Houle both had two hits on the evening. Zach Hirsch tossed the final four frames of the ballgame to earn his first save of the season. He surrendered just three hits and one walk. He fanned four. Vicente Campos (1-5, 6.35 ERA) took the loss. He gave up two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings.
