  1. Buies Creek 2, Carolina 1 Mudcats Washed Away 2-1 in Rain-Shortened Loss Cooper Hummel went 2-for-2 with a RBI double and a walk in the rain-shortened loss Victor Diaz went the distance in this one, albeit that was only 4 innings due to the rain shortened nature of this game. Cooper Hummel doubled with two out in the 5th to get the Mudcats within one run but Dallas Carroll then popped out and the rain ended what was left of the game. Hummel had two hits and a walk in three plate appearances to raise his OBA to .398. When was the last time the Brewers had someone achieve .400 for that stat in A+? That is probably the only subject of interest left in this season. 13. Buies Creek 9, Carolina 1 Mudcats Lose 9-1 in Sweep Clinching Loss to Astros Carolina lost its fifth straight game in front of 6,295 at Five County Stadium The Mudcats magic number for falling out of the playoff race was 3 going into this game so presumably it is now 1. Devin Williams came out after walking the first two hitters in the second inning. He was at 38 pitches. The trainer came out and he, Williams, was visibly limping when he left the field. Wuilder Rodriguez and Nathan Kirby then worked a scoreless 5 innings although Rodriguez allowed an inherited run to score in that second inning. Cody Beckman and Daniel Brown were both hammered in the final three innings. Demi Orimoloye had a triple and not much else happened for Carolina at the plate. Cooper Hummel has caught only 7 games this year versus 44 last year. 14. Devin Williams left the game after walking the first two batters in the second inning. He appeared to be limping so maybe not an arm issue.
  15. Buies Creek 12, Carolina 7 Nine Run Third Dooms Mudcats in 12-7 Loss to Buies Creek Orimoloye and Aguilar both homered for Carolina in the loss The game was going fine until the bottom of the third when Buies Creek exploded for 9 runs including three home runs, one a grand slam. 17. Buies Creek 5, Carolina 4 Mudcats Drop Series Opener 5-4 in Ten at Buies Creek Orimoloye and Morrison homered in the seventh and eighth in Carolina's loss at Buies Creek The Mudcats were eight games behind Buies Creek in the second half standings but still had seven to play with them. Now nine behind with six to play. The Mudcats rallied from four down to tie the game in the eighth inning only to lose in extra innings. Hard to see Jorge Ortega struggling on a level he had mastered before. He gave up all four runs in regulation in his four innings of work. A scoreless five innings from Victor Diaz enabled the Mudcats to get back in the game before Daniel Brown yielded the winning run in the tenth. 18. Potomac 4, Carolina 2 Francis Allows Two Homers in 4-2 Loss to Nationals The Mudcats fell 4-2 in Sunday's series finale and lost two of three in their series versus Potomac Bowden Francis had a no-hitter going through four but it all came undone in the 5th with the headlined gopher balls. Meanwhile, Mudcat hitters could only manage 3 hits. They did get the tying runs on base with Weston Wilson up and two out but he grounded out to short to end the threat. 19. Potomac 3, Carolina 2 Mudcats Lose Late Lead in 3-2 Loss to Nationals The Mudcats lost a one run lead in the eighth and fell 3-2 to the Nationals on Saturday There was a rain delay in the middle of the second inning. Both teams brought back the starter after around a hour delay and neither was the same. Joan Baez walked Weston Wilson and Cooper Hummel who both scored and Baez exited after that inning. Those would be the only Mudcat runs on the night. Alec Bettinger struck out 4 in the first two innings but struggled with command after the rain delay and gave up a run in the fourth, his last inning. Rodrigo Benoit yielded both of the remaining P-Nat runs in the 8th to pick up the loss. Cody Beckman with three scoreless innings had one of his best performances with Carolina. Alec Bettinger: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K Cody Beckman: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K Rodrigo Benoit: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K Joantgel Segovia: 2-5 Weston Wilson: 1-3, BB Cooper Hummel: 0-1, 2 BB Nick Roscetti: 1-2, 2 BB Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log
  20. Carolina 5, Potomac 4 Carolina Collects Another Walk-Off in 5-4 Win Versus Potomac The Mudcats picked up their 11th walk-off victory of the season on Friday night Christian Taugner was staked to a 4-0 lead in the first inning but could not hold it. He yielded 4 runs over 6 innings of work. After scoring the four runs in the bottom half of the first, the Mudcats would not score again until the 10th when they got the walk off sac fly from Dallas Carroll. Tremendous work in this game by Daniel Brown. He came in with the bases loaded and one out and got out of that jam with no runs scored. He then pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Weston Wilson and Cooper Hummel had run scoring doubles in the first. 21. Carolina 2, Down East 1 Carolina Escapes With 2-1 Series Finale Victory In Kinston Weston Wilson hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth in his first game back off the DL With the return of Weston Wilson, the Mudcats fielded probably their most potent offense in some time. However, they only managed three hits in the game. The double by Weston Wilson which drove in both runs after two walks earlier in the inning and a pair of singles by Nick Roscetti. Devin Williams worked into the 4th inning and had much better results than his last two starts. Victor Diaz and Luke Barker finished the game. It was the first win this year at Down East versus eight losses. These games are being played at Campbell University on artificial turf while the Rangers build a permanent stadium. 22. Down East 6, Carolina 2 Mudcats Walloped 6-2 by Taveras and Wood Ducks in Kinston Carolina fell to 0-8 at Grainger Stadium this season with the loss Jorge Ortega gave up a leadoff home run and things went downhill from there. Jorge is now just over two years off of Tommy John surgery and is still not back to where he was before. Nathan Kirby also had a rough night. Robbie Rojas was the catcher in this game. It's disappointing that Cooper Hummel has gotten almost no play behind the plate and Mario Feliciano very little. It is becoming somewhat of a lost year for Mario. You have to wonder if either one of those guys will achieve their goals if they cannot stick behind the plate. Christian Taugner threw a 6 inning shutout in his Mudcats' debut giving the bullpen a much needed rest. Four Mudcats had multi-hit games led by Cooper Hummel and Ryan Aguilar who had three apiece. Cooper Hummel is hitting .301/.411/.496/.908 in the second half and really has hit very well ever since Tucker Neuhaus went down.
