  1. Myrtle Beach 1, Carolina 0 Mudcats Held To One Hit in 1-0 Loss to Pelicans Keegan Thompson and Tyler Peyton combined on a one-hit shutout of the Mudcats A two out single by Keston Hiura in the 1st inning turned out to be the only base runner for the Mudcats. Conor Harber took the hard luck loss giving up one run in 5 innings. 2. Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach 1 Hiura Hits Walk-Off Blast as Mudcats Defeat Pelicans 4-1 Keston Hiura hit a walk-off home run in the tenth to lead Carolina to its third straight win A walk off 3-run home run with 2 out in the 10th by Keston Hiura gave the Mudcats the win tonight. Naturally it came off a left hander. He is just eating lefties alive. I guess Myrtle Beach didn't want to use up another pitcher. After a poor start, Keston has bumped his batting average all the way over .290 now. Marcos Diplan was the starter. I didn't get any radar readings but it looked like he had maybe his best fastball of the year. He is still struggling with command though. Luke Barker gets the vulture-like win. Marcos Diplan 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K Braulio Ortiz 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K Luke Barker 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K Keston Hiura 2-5, HR Max McDowell 2-4, 2B Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 10th Austin Upshaw remains in the game as the second baseman. Keston Hiura homers (5) on a fly ball to left center field. Max McDowell scores. Dallas Carroll scores.
  3. Carolina 11, Down East 3 Roegner Keeps Rolling as Mudcats Drop Wood Ducks 11-3 Cam Roegner rattled off another scoreless start while leading his club to a series victory Cam Roegner runs his scoreless streak to 28 2/3 innings. He struck out the first two hitters and rolled from there. Mudcats hitters struck early and often highlighted by a Weston Wilson grand slam. Dallas Carroll is a "professional hitter" type. He has good at bats nearly every time. He is probably marginal in the field though. No. I really don't think he can play shortstop. Third and second are probably it. Cam Roegner 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K Dallas Carroll 2-4, BB, 2B Keston Hiura 2-5, 2B Weston Wilson 3-5, 2B, HR Luis Aviles Jr. 2-5, HR Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log
  4. Carolina 2, Down East 1 Neuhaus and Mudcats Walk-Off Wood Ducks 2-1 in Ten Innings The Mudcats came back from a 1-0 deficit in the ninth before winning 2-1 on Wednesday Cooper Hummel, after showing some surprising hitting ability last year (.749 OPS), has had a disappointing season thus far (.542 OPS). Maybe he was working on the outfield play too much? Today, at least, he came up big with a two out bottom of the ninth single to tie the game. The Mudcats then went on to win in the 10th on a Tucker Neuhaus base hit. Tucker showed a lot of promise in 2016 when he OPS'd .957 including .911 at Wisconsin. Since then he fell to .749 last year with injuries and is at .760 this year. He has worked all of the infield positions and is now playing left field. All of them with at least some skill. Braden Webb is a toolsy type pitcher with a hard fastball and big curveball. He just hasn't had much command so far as you can see from his walk numbers. The same can be said for Conor Harber who also pitched today. Luke Barker threw 3 pitches to get the win by retiring his one batter on a double play to end the tenth. Braden Webb 5 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K Conor Harber 2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K Keston Hiura 0-3, 2 BB Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Pretty much the whole game summarized: Carolina Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Jake Lemoine replaces Jacob Shortslef. 5. Down East 4, Carolina 2 Diaz Fans Career High Eight in 4-2 Loss to Wood Ducks The Mudcats snapped a four game winning streak with a 4-2 loss to Down East The Mudcats pushed single runs over in the 8th and 9th innings but it was not enough. Nathan Kirby gave up a home run before hitting his pitch limit. Victor Diaz had the strike out pitch working but also yielded 6 hits and 2 walks in his 5 1/3 innings. Nathan Kirby 2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K Victor Diaz 5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K Keston Hiura 1-4, HBP Ryan Aguilar 2-4 Ronnie Gideon 0-4, 4 K Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log
  6. Carolina 4, Down East 2 Supak Totals Seven Strikeouts as Mudcats Win Fourth Straight Ryan Aguilar hit a game tying homer in the seventh while helping the Mudcats to a 4-2 victory A strong start by Trey Supak and a two inning save by Luke Barker led the way for the Mudcats' 4th win in a row. Ryan Aguilar is quietly having a very nice year for the Mudcats. He plays a good centerfield and made a few plays in this game. This is the first time I have seen Keston Hiura in the field. It's a little hard to tell about the throwing because the second base throw is so awkward, often coming across the body. He did make one throw from short right to 3rd base that looked okay. He also made a heads up play when a grounder came to Ronnie Gideon with a man at first. Gideon looked to 2nd first and then didn't have time to beat the runner to first. It didn't look like Supak was going to get there in time but Keston Hiura covered first and they got the out. Trey Supak 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K Luke Barker 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Save Keston Hiura 2-4, 2B Tucker Neuhaus 2-4, played LF Ryan Aguilar 1-3, BB, HR Luis Aviles Jr. 1-3, BB Cooper Hummel 1-2, BB Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log The 7th inning was the key to this game: Carolina Bottom of the 7th Ryan Aguilar homers (2) on a fly ball to right center field. 8. Carolina 9, Buies Creek 1 Mudcats Sweep Astros with 9-1 Victory at Buies Creek Ryan Aguilar and Tucker Neuhaus had RBI triples in Carolina's sweep clinching victory Buies Creek have really dominated the Mudcats the past two seasons but the Mudcats completed their first sweep of the year today at the expense of the Astros. This despite the fact that the Mudcats got the shortest start of the year out of Marcos Diplan and walked 7 Astros hitters. 9. Carolina 6, Buies Creek 3 Roegner Reels Off Another Scoreless Start as Mudcats win 6-3 Roegner lowered his Carolina League leading ERA to 0.76 with seven scoreless innings Cam Roegner now runs his scoreless innings streak to 22 2/3 innings. He only took 82 pitches to get through 7 innings. Nattino Diplan and Alec Crawford both yielded runs but it was not enough to come back this time. The Mudcats only had 6 hits, two of them by Max McDowell, in scoring their 6 runs. 7 walks helped including two to Tucker Neuhaus. 10. 14. I'll have you know that Kuiper hit 7 home runs in the Minors so Segovia has a ways to go to catch him. Kuiper, by the way, is a Racine guy who went to Case HS.
  15. Carolina 6, Wilmington 3 Mudcats Complete Series Win with 6-3 Victory Dallas Carroll had three hits and both Ronnie Gideon and Rob Henry homered in Carolina's 6-3 win The good news is this is the second series win over Wilimington. The bad news is that the Mudcats are now done with Wilmington for the season unless they see them in the playoffs. Braden Webb has now only issued one walk over his last two starts. Progress. Conor Harber got the win in relief. He seems to have found a home in the pen this year. Alec Crawford gets his second save. Dallas Carroll chipped in with three hits and Keston Hiura and Rob Henry each had two. 17. Carolina 5, Wilmington 1 Roegner Tosses Seven Shutout Frames in 5-1 Win Weston Wilson went 4-for-4 and Cam Roegner lowered his league leading ERA to just 0.89 A strong start from Cam Roegner led the Mudcats to the win. He had a line that was a little odd with only two hits but also only one strikeout. He had 10/5 ground outs to fly outs. I think they considered sending him out for the eighth but when the Mudcats half of the 7th ran a little long they decided against it. I only started watching in the 6th but his breaking ball looked a little flat to me compared to other times I have seen him and maybe that's why the K's were down today. Not a big strikeout guy anyway though. As mentioned, he leads the Carolina League in ERA (with Trey Supak second). However, with Supak also second in WHIP and Roegner down aroung the 10-15 rank in that stat, maybe there's a little bit of luck involved there. Alec Kenilvort finished the game up. Weston Wilson had a four hit night to lead the offense. Cam Roegner 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K Alec Kenilvort 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K Weston Wilson 4-4, 2B Keston Hiura 1-3, BB, 3B Luis Aviles 2-3, 2B Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 6th Luis Aviles Jr. doubles (6) on a line drive to center fielder Khalil Lee. 18. Yeah, Roegner #1 in ERA in the Carolina League (Trey Supak #2). He is more like 10-15 in WHIP though whereas Supak is second in that stat too.
  19. Wilmington 6, Carolina 4 Late Rally Falls Short in 6-4 Loss to Blue Rocks Max McDowell had a go-ahead triple in the seventh, but the Mudcats fell 6-4 to Wilmington Nathan Kirby went 2 innings and Victor Diaz 5 1/3 in this game. 21. Buies Creek 4, Carolina 3 Mudcats Squander Late Lead in 4-3 Loss Carolina lost a 3-1 lead in the seventh while falling to the Astros 4-3 at Jim Perry Stadium Every so often Marcos Diplan tantalizes you with one of these games but he can't repeat it. Let's hope this is the start of something for Marcos. He did issue four walks in six innings however. Alec Kenilvort gave up 3 runs in his one inning that made the difference. The Mudcats could only manage 5 hits. The only extra base hit was a double by Ronnie Gideon that skipped by the Astros' left fielder on the Jim Perry Field astroturf. 22. Buies Creek 2, Carolina 0 Mudcats Held to Two Hits in 2-0 Loss at Buies Creek The Mudcats struck out 15 times for the second straight night in a 2-0 loss to the Astros A good start by Braden Webb was wasted when the hitting disappeared tonight. I especially liked the fact that he walked nobody. As mentioned, Keston Hiura started at second base but was replaced by Tucker Neuhaus in the 6th inning so maybe the experiment failed? 25. Down East 9, Carolina 3 Mudcats Allow Nine Extra-Base Hits in 9-3 Loss to Wood Ducks Check Leblanc went 4-for-4 while leading Down East to the 9-3 win in Sunday's series finale Not much went right in this game. Start with only 1 inning from Nathan Kirby. Poor control today and those pitches which caught the plate were generally hammered by the Wood Ducks. He seemed to visibly up his tempo when Milacki came out but still he's only getting low 90's even on the fast stadium radar gun. At some point he will have to air it out rehab or no. Daniel Brown went the last 2 1/3 innings without giving up a run. Dallas Carroll and Luis Aviles Jr. each had two hits.
