  1. My theory is that the rule is the "protector of the island" has to be male. Thus, no Kate on the list and #42 Kwon= Jin, not Sun. I also wonder if the man in black/Locke is the reason behind why no children are born on the island. Something like he can come back or mark through death (Locke, Sayid) and Jacob can come back through new life (Aaron). That would make some sense for why "the others" were so focused on getting the children early on.
  2. To say that Sheets "disappeared" when the club needed him most seems unfair as Sheets attempted to pitch with a torn biceps tendon for us during the run for the playoffs. I'm not saying he's not injury prone, but fans act as if it is a personality fault of Sheets'.
  3. Wow, no good shows from ABC or CBS over the past decade...I disagree ABC: LOST (best show on TV) Modern Family (better than 30 Rock and The Office now) Castle Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Cougar Town (I don't watch but it seems like a lot of others do) Scrubs has had a long run I think it's too early to write off Flashforward and V as well CBS: The Big Bang Theory How I Met Your Mother NCIS CSI The Amazing Race and Survivor are the best of the reality world
  4. Yeah, this was the best thing that could have happened for Conan. He went from a late night host with a core group of die-hard fans but little mainstream momentum to a household name. They say no publicity is bad publicity, and Conan came out of this one looking like a martyr and hero who "stood up to the man". Whether that's accurate or not doesn't really matter as it's the public perception that matters. Conan's people have said themselves that this is his "Hugh Grant interview" that will make him much more marketable in late night TV.
  5. Northwestern's fans just stormed the court after beating a team that had already lost twice in the past week (Purdue). I know there was discussion about when it's appropriate to storm the court earlier in this thread, but I think everyone can agree that this is completely ridiculous.
  6. With the whole McGwire incident bringing the steroid debate back to the forefront of sports, I was wondering if anyone had any links to studies that examine the impact of steroid use. I've heard people argue both that steroids do significantly impact ability and I've also heard a smaller group of people claim that the impact of steroids is overstated. It'd be nice to have some objective data in order to make an informed opinion.
  7. I'm sure many of you have seen the videos but for those that haven't here's what I'm talking about: Some friends and I want to do our part to keep the silver carp out of the Great Lakes, and I was wondering if anyone here has actually done this before. I've read the basics of the sport (certain motor rpms gets the fish to jump), but beyond that we really don't know what all we need to do (equipment, where on the illinois river, best ways to actually hit a fish etc). Anyone have any advice?
  8. I like the move. As others have said, Melvin needed to do something and Wolf seems like the best option that we could realistically get. And Wolf isn't Suppan...Suppan only pitched well for a couple of weeks (postseason) while Wolf has had productive seasons. I think the right move now is to try to hit gold on one of those boom or bust type guys (Harden, Sheets, sorta Mulder) and hopefully the pitching staff should be markedly better than in 2009
  9. Ho hum, another game, another 26 points for Jennings
  10. Brandon Jennings may well end up being the man that saves the NBA in Milwaukee. If the team had another lackluster year like the last few had been the team would have been in major trouble. Between the economy, Kohl thinking about selling, and the terrible Bradley Center, I'm betting there would have been talk of the Bucks leaving Milwaukee.
  11. I recently have gotten addicted to Wallyball, which for those of you who don't know, is basically volleyball in a raquetball court. Does anyone else here play? I've played competitive volleyball for a number of years, and wallyball requires many of the same skills and is a fun change of pace. I highly recommend trying it if you enjoy volleyball
  12. I like Granderson just because he has more of a track record, but in the end it's a wash I bet. I got offered Cole Hamels for Tommie Hanson...good deal or bad deal?
  13. Doesn't Gamel need to spend more time in the minors to ensure Super Two status? If so, it is a no brainer to send him down to save millions and millions of dollars in the future. I think he's the best option at 3rd, but he's not enough of an upgrade to justify the cost.
  14. I don't really like playing doublers on yahoo. The winner ends up being whoever got the lucky cards when the cards go around a few times. The most skilled players don't win as often as when playing leasters.
  15. I also think that sheepshead is an amazing game and play everyday over lunch. My friends and I recently acquired a deck of Bavarian cards and have been learning "Schafkopf" which is the German game from which sheepshead originated. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys sheepshead as it has a few different rules that are interesting. I'm not in Milwaukee so I couldn't do a live game on a regular basis, but I'd be up for playing on yahoo. I've been wanting to play on-line, but I've heard that many people have the same problem as cwolf2012 and get booted if they haven't played a lot before (which I think is completely ridiculous).
  16. Jenna Fischer addressed the issue in her blog and has confirmed that Michael did say "I quit" and he meant it. Should be an interesting episode tonight. http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=27753303&blogId=479035811
  17. My prediction: Due to Jim making a poor first impression, he's passed over for running the Scranton branch. The new boss finds out that Andy was a Cornell grad and assumes that he can handle it. Chaos ensues and David Wallace ends up begging Michael to come back.
  18. http://www.apple.com/trai...ublicenemies/medium.html Trailer is out on the Johnny Depp, Christian Bale movie. I'm excited about it as it is the only major motion picture in recent memory to be shot in Wisconsin.
  19. They should have tried to bring Jon Stewart to Network TV. He could do the same show as the Daily Show and just call it Late Night.
  20. This is exactly why I don't send out the slides, or post them online.Sure, some students are probably more likely to skip if powerpoints are provided, but I think that it would come back to hurt those students in the long run. I think the key is to make the students apply the topics that are being presented. Sure, if the tests are straight facts out of the slides than people are going to zone out or not even come, but if the tests force the students to apply the concepts taught then attendance and attention are necessary. I know that for many of my classes the tests could practically be open note and still be challenging because they require a level of critical thinking and problem solving that goes beyond the powerpoint slides. That said, I do think it matters what type of course it is for whether making powerpoints available is necessary or not. It all depends on the subject matter to me.
  21. I would agree that note-taking is becoming a lost art, but I also believe that powerpoint presentations are a necessary evil in some classes at the university level. Given the shear volume of complex information presented in some classes, I believe that it is much more effective to have the major points provided and to supplement them with your own note-taking. I feel like if powerpoints weren't provided I would spent the whole lecture frantically writing rather than trying to comprehend the material.
  22. Would the island even let Locke commit suicide? In the past, it didn't let Michael and Jack.
  23. I, like many others apparently, think this sense of entitlement is a huge issue that our society is going to have to deal with in the future. The generations that are in school right now are going to get a rude awakening when they hit the working world and figure out that you're accountable for your actions and just showing up isn't good enough. If you never fail, you'll never learn to truly succeed. Also an interesting side note on grades: from my experience at UW-L, what classes you're taking have a very large impact on the distribution of grades. Most classes use a program that allows you to see how the class is performing as a whole, so it is very easy to ascertain the classes that are more difficult than others. It seemed to me that in most liberal arts classes a "B" was considered average or even below average while in most math and science courses the average tended to be more of the traditional "C". The university actually acknowledges this discrepancy to some degree as a 3.75 is required to make the Dean's list for liberal arts majors and a 3.5 is required for math and science majors. I don't really get why grading isn't standardized across all majors.
  24. If we can't afford to pay it, why did we balk at including the 1st rounder in the Portland deal?
