  1. I'd go Miller over Perez, but it's hard to get too upset about Counsell benching a guy who's 4 for his last 29. I'm a Brad Miller fan, but he's looked lost at the plate just like everyone else. I think all of our 5-9 options are uninspiring. Will really help to get Braun/Thames back and hopefully get an addition so we only need to figure out the 7-8 spots in the order.
  2. It will be interesting to see how they approach Chacin's start. With the All-Star break coming up, there's no reason not to empty the bullpen. I'm guessing Hader cares more about winning this game than his availability for the All-Star game. You figure you can soak up 4-5 innings with Hader-Jeffress-Knebel. Williams is likely available as well, so really we only need Chacin to get through 3-4 innings before we can get to our bullpen. Given our offensive struggles, I think Chacin shouldn't get more than one at bat in this game.
  3. According to Jon Heyman's article today Zach Britton was throwing 96-98 mph in a recent appearance with good movement on his sinker. If that's the case he may be more than just a throw-in with Machado.
  4. Looks like he's heating up, Dozier has homered in 3 out of last 4 games. For as bad as SS has been, our numbers out of 2B are almost as bad. Even though they play different positions, you can almost compare Dozier and Machado directly as the same guys (Saladino/Miller/Perez/maybe Villar) who would play SS if we got Dozier would play 2B if we got Machado. Dozier has had a higher OPS than Machado the last two years, so I think the offense is closer than a lot of people think. From everyone's reports, the defense would be similar with Machado or Miller at SS and an upgrade with Saladino (and maybe Perez) as SS. Additionally, the Hiura idea looks less likely than it did a couple weeks ago. He's battled injuries and is 2 for his last 26 in AA. Everyone is allowed to have a slump, but I think it does indicate that he's not ready to jump to the majors and hit major league pitching significantly better than our current options.
  5. I saw something the other day that said the Orioles had scouts at the Brewers game. Can someone explain to me what value there is in having an in-person scout at a major league baseball game? I feel like I could watch the tape of every AB of Jacob Nottingham's (or whoever they were there to see) career in the amount of time it took these scouts to travel to and watch him have 4 AB's at a Brewers game. I get the need for in-person scouting for high school and college games where teams wouldn't have access to high quality video, but I have to imagine teams have access to video for all major and minor league games.
  6. I hope if we do get Machado that he's open to playing 3B if Shaw needs a day off or double switching to 3B if a better SS is coming into the game. I know he's insisting on playing SS, but you have to have some flexibility on a contending team.
  7. I'm loving the timing on Realmuto going on paternity leave. Marlins are going to struggle to score without him.
  8. Britton has terrible numbers this year, but it looks like he had 2 terrible outings and had scoreless appearances in 9 out of 11 outings. More concerning looks like his velocity is down roughly 2 mph. As he's owed roughly $6 million yet this year, I don't know that he really adds positive value to package with Machado.
  9. He's the better of the two offensively. Used to put up 20 ppg regularly
  10. Even if the Orioles aren't specifically targeting a catcher, there were other reports that they want "major league ready" prospects. Outside of our elite prospects, I think that Woodruff and Nottingham are one of our few prospects that fit this description. From what I understand Orioles have some depth at OF, so they may not value Santana/Broxton/Phillips as much as we wish they did.
  11. Some rumors that the Orioles want catchers Keibert Ruiz (Dodgers) and Francisco Mejia (Cleveland). If true, my guess is they probably want Nottingham from us. How would we feel about Nottingham and Woodruff for Machado? My guess is the answer to that question depends on whether you see Pina as a long-term solution at catcher or not.
  12. Looks like Puig has an oblique strain. Hopefully that doesn't make the Dodgers increase their offer
  13. Brook Lopez coming to Milwaukee. Hard to see Parker's salary fitting on the team now unless he signs the qualifying offer. Edit: Actually, looks like we got Lopez for $3.4 million. That seems like a steal. Defense isn't great, but nice to have a center that can score the ball.
  14. I think relying on Hiura to come in and save the day is taking a big risk. I love him as a prospect, but how many guys come in and destroy major league pitching right away? The bigger concern is his health. He hasn't played in 4-5 days due to an injury and reports are he's still out a few more days. I'm not trying to label him injury prone, but he does have more health concerns right now than most. Brian Anderson said on the broadcast that Dozier looked like a guy that needed a change of scenery. I agree with that completely. I know he's been a .700 OPS guy this year, but he's got a long track record of being better than that, especially in the 2nd half. A trade to a contender could energize him too. Maybe the Twins saw enough of Keon Broxton that they want him on their team?
  15. Even if Hiura would be better than Dozier ROS (which I doubt), it doesn't cost nothing. It accrues service time and if he ends up being the player we think he is we'll have one less year of control with him. I'm ok with this if we don't have a better option at 2B, but a Dozier type move seems like the best of both worlds. I wonder if a Gatewood or Phillips type would get the deal done. I'd rather give up a couple of prospect from that tier than a Zach Brown type.
  16. Yeah, I think Dozier would be a bridge to Hiura. As many have detailed in other threads, the organization might not be ready to go to Hiura yet from a defense, health, and service time perspective. This would give shore up a lineup spot for this year without throwing off the long-term plan.
  17. Nick Franklin officially moved to the 60 day DL to make room for Orf
  18. Dozier seems to have the potential for huge positive regression: 2018: .221/.311/.397/.708 2017: .271/.359/.498/.856 2016: .268/.340/.546/.886 I think the slash lines actually underestimate his value as he fills up all the counting stat categories as well. He clearly hasn't hit as good as Machado this year, but those are Machado type numbers that would likely come at a fraction of the prospect cost.
  19. We seem to be collecting 2B, so how about trading for Brian Dozier? I'm sure the Twins would deal him as they're quickly falling out of the division race and the wild card. He'd be a half year rental, but that's alright with me since Hiura could theoretically be ready next year. Dozier's numbers aren't great this year, but they are still better than what we've gotten out of 2B and if I remember correctly Dozier has a tendency to play better in the 2nd half than early in the year.
  20. Franklin to the 60 day DL definitely makes the most sense. We'll need Sogard as a back-up SS until Saldino returns. I hope 2B in AAA opening up means Hiura will be getting a promotion as well. Either gets him one step closer to the majors or gives him the opportunity to rack up some huge numbers hitting in Colorado and increase his trade value.
  21. In the scenario where Hiura gets called up this year, it would be interesting to see if he gets promoted to AAA first or comes straight to Milwaukee from Biloxi. The Brewers haven't had a problem promoting from AA in the past, but if I remember correctly it has usually been pitchers. To me, a .950 OPS at AA is almost more impressive than whatever he would do in Colorado. Plus, than you continue to let Orf play 2B in AAA. I don't think the organization is going to let Nate Orf get in the way of doing whatever they think is best for Hiura, but it would be nice not to displace a guy if you don't have to.
  22. Looks like MLB recently banned teams from signing players from the LMB, otherwise this clearly would have been a wise option. https://www.sbnation.com/2018/6/22/17492596/major-league-baseball-bans-teams-signing-players-mexican-league
  23. This seems like a good move to improve this year's roster without sacrificing too much of the future. What type of prospect do we think it will take? I'm guessing someone in our top 10-20 range of prospects would probably be the type of offer it takes.
  24. I'd like Khryi Thomas at #17. Seems like a Brogdon type of guy. If Robert Williams or Lonnie Walker drop they'd be good too. I wouldn't be opposed to trading #17 for an early-mid 2nd round pick if a team was willing to take on a Delly/Snell/Henson contract. Guys like Jevon Carter, Moritz Wagner, Brunson, ect could be there and would be interesting. I'd also trade Bledsoe, Henson, and #17 for Whiteside if Miami is looking to make a deal.
  25. Looks like Burnes pitched 2 innings in relief. Do we think there is anything to this? Possibly setting up a spot start (similar to Peralta) or making a switch to help in the majors this year?
