  1. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kiley-mcdaniel-prospects-chat-63015/ Ultimately, I would think a system where teams could bid their amateur draft picks for draft slots in the international draft could work, but MLB has a lot of issues to work out even beyond draft order for it to succeed. It'd be hard not improve the current system with whatever comes out of the CBA for ensuring competive balance.
  2. I've seen this advocated, but not sure this actually the case. I was under the impression that a international draft is likely in the new CBA and signing penalties are likely to carry forward. Speculating on draft order, it seems possible the Brewers would be potentially forfeiting high, cost controlled pick(s) in future drafts by blowing through their slot bonuses. I haven't seen much on this recently and I'd expect the Brewers to have a better handle on what the new CBA will include, but I'd be excited if the Brewers found a 7-figure talent within their allotment. Also, did we give some of our slot bonus money for this signing period to Houston in the Gomez trade or was that last years?
  3. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/minor-league-player-development-contracts/ Scroll to the bottom. Maybe Toledo is getting sick of Detroit's mediocre system and interested in its franchises historical past as the old minor league Milwaukee Brewers? Not seeing much for options...
  4. Unfortunately the Brewers aren't very desirable. We've been dumped for the Pirates and A's in our last 2 locations. If this happens, San Antonio would seem like a no brainer to affliate with the Astros (who were left without a partner as well and ended up in Fresno for the last go around).
  5. I like the Fermentation Tank. Still not buying Correa's motive or at least sole motive. He accessed the Astros's database on his busiest and days when it would be most beneficial to access it to validate that they weren't using their proprietary tools?
  6. They project about the same but Lopez seems farther away from a finished project. No sense in using service time to polish his control on a rebuilding squad when he has never been to AAA, and giving away Lopez's potential 2022 season when it is even money to make us better next season. Now Guerra, I'd love to see him get a shot.
  7. I'm still puffing. Opportunity cost is downside. I'd rather give the 500-600 PAs to someone with more potential payback. Carter has been given plenty of chances. He is 29. Its unlikely his profile/value will change much. I guess bad move might be a little strong, but underwhelming.
  8. They aren't the same player. Moss was coming off of multiple seasons with above average OBP prior to last season and has some defensive versatility. WAR has limitations but it is still somewhat telling that Carter has never had a 2 fWAR season, even when he produced 37 HRs
  9. Fail to see the upside here. Even if he does hit 40 bombs, he doesn't get on base and plays awful defense. Is there really teams out there looking to trade good prospects for a .310 OBP, 30% strikeout DH at the deadline? One of the valuable things a rebuilding team has is they can give playing time to unproven players who contending teams don't want to take a chance on. This move seems like a slightly below average fill-in who will now be eating 600 PA at a position that should be the easiest to fill.
  10. Baseball Prospectus had the Brewers playoff odds at 27% prior to the season. Pittsburgh, for reference, was 28%. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/probability.jsp Fangraphs ZIPs had the Brewers @36 WAR, the Cubs @34WAR, and the Pirates @37WAR http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-zips-projections-milwaukee-brewers/ http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-zips-projections-chicago-cubs/ http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-zips-projections-pittsburgh-pirates/ I don't know about .500 team, but it was only a mistake to chase the non-zero playoff probability after the random events happened and realities changed.
  11. I may be misinterpreting the situation, but I believe the Brewers would be unwise to exceed their J2 spending limit in 2016. With international draft seemingly imminent and penalties likely to be carried forward, they could be forfeiting high, cost controlled picks in 2017 and 2018.
  12. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/st-louis-cardinals-sign-mike-leake.html
  13. I wish they'd move Collymore back to 2B even if they don't think he will stick there. I'll be disappointed if they can't find room for Stokes in Wisconsin. Even though he was the youngest, he had a better season than Collymore and Belonis at the plate and has better approach
  14. Procedural question, I know any team can claim him for their 25 roster if we elect to send him back to the Twins, but Iif the Brewers can work out a deal with the Twins to maintain his rights, can they option him (while staying on the 40 man roster) without needing to clear everyone's 25 man roster?
  15. Obviously beyond regime changes, there is a lot of posturing/poker faces going on in these deals, but... would have been nice if the could have gotten the right to Zack Jones so we can option him to AA where he should be if the Twins were not going to protect him. Oh well, what's a roster spot on a projected 65 win team worth?
  16. Were his stats that impressive? His k rate actually went down in the second half. He struck out less than 6 k/9. Basically balls stopped leaving the park which is probably as much a product of a humid Florida summer environment than anything.
  17. To be fair he is only 26. His body type might not age gracefully, and his bat is nothing special but the majority of this contract is his prime. Parra has shown us the volatility of corner outfielder defensive metrics but Heyward has been graded outstanding for awhile now. Best thing to hope for is Cubs tv is a disaster... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/despite-risks-cubs-eyeing-own-tv-network/
  18. Plus he cost a 1st round pick. Granted, the Cubs could sign another QO free agent with less consequence and will get a pick for Fowler. So far father time hasn't slowed Lackey, but as we have seen with Suppan, Wolf, and Lohse; it happens fast.
  19. Peralta was about a 1.5 mph off on his fastball last year and hardly struck anyone out. Even Wily at his best (2014), so far, is a contact manager who is barely above league average. If a team, with a higher playoff odds over the next 3 seasons where Peralta is still under control, is willing to overpay for a league average starter with the velocity for more, I'd jump on it. If a team is just looking for a buy low opportunity, wait and see if the new pitching coach and management can turn him around. I suspect any reported interest is the latter.
  20. Via J.P. Breen at BPMilwaukee -- Milwaukee Brewers Top Prospects: #11-20 Coulter may be raw defensively and slow to adjust at the plate, but his combination of power, age, and plate discipline has to be somewhere in the top 20, doesn't it? Nothing against Rivera, but I cannot see how considering upsides you can put him ahead of Coulter.
  21. Last year was the first year it was published and Diaz was not in the top 200; http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/katohs-top-200-prospect-list/ I'll defend the system somewhat. Obviously, there is a lot of volatility in projecting based off of minor league stats no matter how good your methodology is. That being said, the methodology still has correlation and it isn't completely junk. Everyone (including the projection system) knows Orlando Arcia and Corey Seager are good prospects and they are valued as such. But valuing prospects without eye popping stats, but do things at an age that correlate to big league success seems essential to gaining any kind of advantage from analytics. The fact that Betancourt and Flores graded out in the 98th percentile of all minor leaguers in such an analysis is noteworthy.
  22. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/katohs-top-100-prospect-list-for-2016/ Brewers well represented, including (2) recent additions higher than any scouting or prospect guru list. Might better explain our new more analytical minded front office additions....
  23. Revisit in June/July... Lopez is a good enough prospect, yet with still raw enough (walk rate) to not start his service clock yet. While I don't agree with completely tanking in 2016, the hope is our playoff probability is high in 2022. Therefore, Id rather have Lopez under control for the extra season than whatever gains will happen by entering next season in Milwaukee. However, if Garza can't reinvent himself as a contact manager or rebound his k rate, and is still sitting with an ERA around 5 in the middle of next season; hopefully, Lopez, Hader, Houser and Wagner are knocking down the door and he is the most logical candidate to remove....
  24. Odd timing, would have thought there would be more money waiting for him after someone misses out on Cueto/Grienke/Price. Thought he'd get more as this is about what Bailey got and Zimmermann has been worth about 20 wins over the last 5 seasons. But he is coming off his worst season with a slight velocity/k rate dip so I guess this isn't too far off.
