  1. In the past it was a question of secondary stuff, but that seems to have gone away. Max effort delivery and slight build (he has been listed as low as 160lbs) are what I've seen second hand concerns.
  2. Replacing the 22-year old Globe Life Ballpark with a retractable roof stadium.
  3. Domingo is 23 and now branded as a replacement level or worse outfielder? What would you have called Nelson Cruz after his first 330 ABs at age 26? Unfortunately, Davis has shown the ability to do nothing, nothing at all, besides power well and his plate discipline has significantly fallen. We are a quarter of the way through the season and Davis is on pace for between 1.2(fWAR) and 2 (bWAR) season in his prime. How much more do you think his value is going go up? How much did it take to acquire Mark Reynolds or Chris Carter? Maybe Davis figures the other aspects of hitting better than those guys did, but the odds are against him still.
  4. Great post and list. It's a very telling list. You have a ton of the top pitchers in baseball coming out of high school on that list: Bumgarner, Fernandez, Kershaw, Grienke, Hamels, Giolito, Miller et al. There will always be that Mike Fiers 22nd rounder who makes it in the mid-to back of the rotation, but if you want a dominant ace that can win multiple games in a playoff series, drafting a high school ace is the way to go, as this list shows. Its probably not that simple when you figure Price, Harvey, Strasburg, Scherzer, Nola, Cole, and Sale (Verlander, Lincecum, and Weaver have also been "ace" caliber and drafted in the last 12 or so years) were all high 1st round college selections. Puk certainly has that level of upside as well though far from a certainty or finished product.
  5. Well now we are probably jinxed so I'll pile on. Despite Guerra's pedestrian K rate in his first 2 starts, his 11.5% swinging strike rate is easily the best in our rotation and would be top 20 in baseball if he qualified. The Padres have the third highest K rate, and the third lowest WOBa and WRC+. I like this matchup.
  6. Well I hope you evens the score for the time we gave them Balfour...not that the Seth McClung era wasn't great. I wonder what Knebel, Nolin, and Jones are up to these days? Havent heard much outside of Knebel played catch a week ago or so.
  7. Ok, that will help get the Brewers better ratings which in turn will get us a better TV contract and more revenue. But ultimately its 1 game of 162. Id be willing to bet every team in baseball has a statistical projection system now that Amaro is no longer a GM. Seems reasonable predicting future performance off of past events and similarity comparisons as an input to decision making. Probably why every team in baseball passed on Perez over the winter. You mean like the factual performance of Perez as a career 50 wRC+ hitter? I guess we'll find out. I acknowledged there is a reasonable probability that Perez is a better player than his projections of 68-72 wRC+ going forward. However, sometimes players just get hot. Yuni B once hit 6 home runs in a month. He quickly regressed into the player he always was. Sure, Perez taking 3 walks tonight was an unlikely event. Just like Bartolo Colon hitting a home run. Neither is likely happen the next time at this point.
  8. Perez was raking at AAA. .339 avg. .834 OPS. MLB He's batting .280 and doesn't strike out on a consistent basis like Walsh. It's a no brainer. Unfortunately, Brewers will send down Rivera or Perez when Scooter comes back and keep Walsh. Ok, so with that piece of statistical evidence, find me a projection system that favors Perez offensively the rest of the season over Walsh? Its understandable they'd be skeptical of 64 at bats in an extreme offensive environment of a guy who has struck out 10x more than he's walked in his career. Now there is variability in projection systems and certainly a reasonable probability that Perez outperforms Walsh going forward. Its certainly not a "no brainer" though and the only way to find out is to continue to let them play it out and let one emerge as the better option.
  9. Walsh has at least shown a propensity for getting on base in pinch hitting appearances which has some use. I would still bet against him continuing a .167 BABIP going forward and think his numbers and plate approach will regress into something less of a outlier in so many ways. Rivera is the same guy who had a .266 OBP in AAA at a hitter's paradise last year in over 300 at-bats. His 18:1 K:BB ratio so far this year looks pretty overmatched. I would think he'd benefit from additional seasoning rather than hoping his offense somehow becomes passable sitting on the bench and taking BP everyday.
  10. It's worth seeing, simply for the historical perspective of how baseball came back to Milwaukee. Plus, Uecker narrates the movie. Agreed. I went to it for the first time this year when my 20 month old started getting antsy in the seats and thought it was interesting and worth my time. I think the marketing was poorly done; "Selig Experience: Come see a hologram of Bud Selig and a replica of his office" does sound comical, but really it is a well done tribute to Bud bringing baseball back to Milwaukee with some neat artifacts.
  11. I for one, am excited to begin Junior Guerra's 31 year old ROY campaign!
  12. Perez has much more of a track record than Walsh and he's a year and a half younger. Walsh has patience and a great eye. That's his lone skill. It's taken him until his age 26 to make the big leagues where he's 1 for 19. I don't usually agree with Mr.Briggs, but I am here. Perez is better than Walsh and deserves to start over him. Only reason Colin Walsh is even on the MLB roster is because of being a Rule 5 guy. I would rather see what Perez can provide and see if he is worth holding onto at the end of the season. Walsh seems, and probably rightfully so, like he is just being stashed and back to the minors next year. Giving him sporadic at-bats when he looks over matched probably wouldn't do anything useful. Not saying I expect anything out of Perez, but he is better and I would rather watch him. I just don't think the Brewers are all that serious about giving Walsh at-bats, but we shall see. For the record I actually don't even prefer to have Perez there...I would rather give the at-bats to Yadiel Rivera. However if picking between Walsh/Perez I pick Perez. I'm just not seeing it unless you believe Walsh is going to continue to carry a .091 BABIP. Even going 1 for 19, Walsh's career wOBA is .007 less than Perez's. Steamer project Perez at a 68 wRC and Walsh at an 83. Walsh is 26. I doubt the Brewers are simply carrying him to stash away his age 27 season back in AAA. Walsh is here because he is one of the 25 best players in the organization. Now I would agree that Perez is still on the upward trajectory of his career but he hasnt shown in spring training or AAA that he has made any improvements in his patience at the plate.
  13. Looks like the game is archived on ESPN3. I might have to look up my credentials tonight and check it out as his mound opponent as fellow likely first rounder Robert Tyler. Here is the recap. At one point Puk retired 16 in a row before running into trouble in the seventh. Its looking less likely that Puk could fall to us with more starts like that.
  14. I don't know if Jeffress threw it in high school, but he did in rookie ball that summer. Link I don't know if it is fair to compare Pint to Rogers or Jeffress. Certainly shows the volatility of taking high school pitchers, but Pint has a taller frame and seems to have better control. I'm starting to hope for a Kyle Lewis pick. Link That be a pretty nice line for a high school first rounder.
  15. Rogers was an all-state soccer player, and an NHL draft prospect with D1 hockey offers. He was a pretty dynamic athlete.
  16. Interesting, I wonder if his offseason struggles in winter ball were partially attributed to the process on toning down his swing.
  17. I'll continue to push the Woodruff bandwagon...going back to last season, his last 8 starts: 1.16 ERA .96 WHIP 9.06 K/9 1.92 BB/9.
  18. If we are going to take Red Sox albatross contracts, Id consider Castillo and give him regular at-bats in center for 10-15 million of his remaining 56 million over the next 5 years. Doubt the Red Sox are too motivated to pay him to play elsewhere yet though.
  19. Not so much. Not so much what? I'm sure there a places with greater park factors than Helena, but the Pioneer League routinely grades out as the most offensive friendly league.
  20. I don't know if 'meh" is fair for a 25% K rate and sub 4 era in the most hitter friendly league in pro ball at 3.2 years younger than league average.
  21. Garin Cecchini has now started just 2 of 5 games? I don't get it.
  22. I don't think the new rule will take away my enjoyment of the game, and I'd be ticked if someone took out Arcia breaking up a double play so I'm fine with it. Something seems shortsighted and reactionary about Hinch and Keuchel complaining about a 10% loss of win probability due to rule designed to protect middle infielders when they have the most valuable middle infielder in the game. Should have spent more time in spring training make sliding within the rules habitual.
  23. I don't understand why the Brewers claimed and continue to roster Junior Guerra if they aren't going to use him. I cant imagine the need being a whole lot more than right now. The projections showing him with a >15% K-BB yet he is one of the first cuts of spring. I guess maybe they think he is more valuable sitting ready as a 7th or 8th starter. Either you believe the projections and the guy has a chance to be an effective big league pitcher or you don't and move on.
  24. Isn't Ian Anderson close to that range right now? Thoughts on Kyle Lewis? I have some unjustified fear of small school players with the contact problems Roache and to a lesser degree Weeks have had, but he seems to be hitting a ton right now.
  25. 5 walks from our infielders (including catcher) yesterday. Did that happen all of last year? And against a guy with a walk rate less than 5% each of the last 2 seasons. Peralta's fastball velocity was up almost a MPH over last season yesterday.
