  1. Is this the end of Helena? So what is the elevation difference between CS and Helena? How much longer are the bus rides?
  2. By that logic, more recently, his stuff was also poor enough that 29 other MLB teams have twice passed on taking a flyer on him in the rule 5 draft and the Brewers neglected to invite him to MLB spring training. I’ll grant you he is probably better than Peralta, possibly better than Torres, but every predictive indicator we have that I’ve seen says Drake will be better.
  3. It shows for 32 innings, balls have been hit to defenders about 5% more than you’d expect resulting from random variability and a pretty strong defense behind him. Wang’s career BABIP in the minors is over .300. Please tell me what about Wang’s arsenal would led you to believe he has the skill set to generate consistent weak contact against MLB hitters.
  4. And I still haven't seen any metrics with strong predictive value that show this is the case. So he has maintained a sub 2 era driven by a .250 BABIP, a HR/FB rate 35% below MLB average, and a ridiculous 90% strand rate? None of those things are likely to continue upon a MLB call-up.
  5. I know high school stats aren't going to provide much correlation, but I'm alittle perplexed that a above slot, corner infield, top-5 round pick can only hit .265 with 1 home run against high school competition.
  6. K% Vs LHB Drake 25.3% vs. MLB hitters Wang 12.5% vs. AAA hitters Im going to speculate that David Stearns disagrees with your conclusion. Lefties are also hitting. 257 against Drake with a .705 OPS. Wang's K's are down, but lefties are hitting only .159 against him this year. There's more to getting lefties out than just a higher K rate. Batting average against is a terrible predictive indicator when you are talking about a sample with a .179 BABIP on 37 balls in play and a ground ball rate less than 40%. Do you honestly believe Wang is going to come close to that number against MLB exit velocities and an outfield of Braun, Santana, Thames and Perez versus Brinson, Cordell, Phillips and Wren?
  7. They were 23-23 so my math says 3-19 over their last 22 games. They have the highest ERA and have allowed the most home runs in the league which makes it more peculiar (knowing nothing outside of boxscores) that they changed pitching coaches in the offseason. T-Rats are also dead last in the league in runs scored and OPS so they have consistency down. Unfortunately not very inspiring.
  8. Re-acquire K-Rod?
  9. K% Vs LHB Drake 25.3% vs. MLB hitters Wang 12.5% vs. AAA hitters Im going to speculate that David Stearns disagrees with your conclusion.
  10. No info but a Florida commitment and with Minnesota's bonus pool, I would assume he has floated out some numbers that are scaring off teams.
  11. Can't he just go back to college, have an elite season with no off-field issues all year, and count on top-10 money as a senior? (Easier said than done, but at least he can threaten that) I think he'd have to sit out a year to play D1 so basically NAIA like Erceg ended up.Difficult to raise your stock against that competition.
  12. Id say there is more swing and miss stuff than either of those player. Gallardo was always projected as a starter though most had him behind Hughes and Garza in rankings because of less velocity on his fastball. You could put the Mccullers comparison on him as many closer tags were put on him as a prospect, but Mccullers has 2” on him. Still I think his stuff is good enough he can be a TOR pitcher though a volatile one at least for a few seasons.
  13. And minutes before the selection, there was heavy AJ Puk rumors I don’t put a ton of stock in mock drafts outside of a barometer of where the talent might go. You can’t hide scouting presence but I’d hope Stearns, Arnold and Montgomery have made trips to see all the top players at some point his spring. Teams have heavy incentives to not leak or let players know how their evaluations compare to the peers. If a player/advisor knows he is top on a team’s board, they are going to float a higher bonus number than if they think they are bidding to be the selection amongst comparable peers.
  14. Brewers select Austin Beck at 1-9.
  15. Phillies select Jeren Kendall at 1-8.
  16. Great, when Thornburg was rehabbing an injury and focusing on mechanics.... Thornburg also has a history of great stuff and command, Cravy not so much. Davies, Guerra, Barnes, Knebel all pitched comfortably below 4.5 FIP. Cravy's ERA last season was the definition of a SSS fluke propped up by a unsustainable strand rate and only used in low leverage situations. He is a swing man, not much else and only if he is carrying a 8+ k/9 rate. If Stearns is making roster decision based off of ERAs in 22 inning sample sizes he has no business being a GM.
  17. So he is useful against lefties? The splits seem like an SSS anomaly based off his minor numbers His career BB% is 8%. That seems fine to me. And if you expand the sample size to include last season's numbers; he has 112 innings of 3.2 ERA and 3.98 FIP. Both of these have to factor in the decision. At a point in time sure, but if the Brewers still feel like they can make adjustments, I'm fine not throwing in the towel without a worthy replacement. How so? Guys with 4.5+FIPs in AAA with 4.5+ ERA projections and fringe stuff don't seem like options at all to me. Drake can strike out guys at a well above average clip and Hughes can get ground balls at on elite level. Blazek cannot do those things.
  18. None of those guys possess a quality MLB arsenal or impressive secondary metrics that would predict they would be better than what we currently have or are any kind of longterm asset. You vastly over estimate how difficult it is to be better than what we currently have. Drake has a 27.5% K rate and a 3.55 FIP, 3.33 xFIP, and 3.58 SIERA. I'd bet on regression over any of those guys. Hughes is a career sub 3 era pitcher with extreme ground ball tendencies. Torres has been an innings eater throughout his career and is coming off a great season. Feliz is still throwing gas and can miss bats. I'd bet on Tunnell straightening him out before any of those guys have sustainable MLB success. Wang has been left unprotected the last 2 seasons, left out of big league camp, and seen all of his peripherals go backwards, regression is coming. Nobody maintains an ERA 2.5 runs less than their FIP over a season. The one good thing about Cravy is he can miss bats at an above average rate. He has stopped doing that.... pass Blazek cannot succeed at the MLB level with a double digit walk rate. I'll grant you Suter could be an upgrade, but Im not throwing the guy with an 84 mph fastball in high leverage situations. ERA is limited in its predictive nature going forward. Stearns isnt going to manage his pen by ignoring BABIP, LOB%, K-BB% and go with who threw a few shutout inning in the last 2 weeks because the balls all went to defenders.
  19. Arizona selects David Peterson a 1-7. Hazen's Red Sox pulled from both college and prep. With an open window, I will go with the PAC12 starter.
  20. Preface: I'm not a scout, I don't pretend to be a scout, I just read a lot and watch some videos. I like your list. I would make it Baz, Bukauskas, Beck. I like the highest ceiling possible. I think I'd take Pavin Smith over everyone else you listed too, although I don't know a lot about the next tier guys. Peterson's ceiling seems low to me. shrug. Sorry to rehash my objections to Pavin Smith, and Im being somewhat hypocritical as I thought the OPS objections to Ray were a bit much last season. BUT Haseley has seen the same pitching, play a more premium position, carries an OPS .150 points higher, and walks more. He has struck out 9 more times so there is that I guess. Pavin Smith just doesn’t possess the power to be a top 10 first basemen to me and doesnt possess the physical attributes to man the corner in the changing MLB. I’d put Carlson somewhere in my top 5 but if the Brewers board matches this, I’d be pretty happy.
  21. Oakland selects Austin Beck at 1-6.
  22. So let Wang, Cravy, Blazek, Suter, sit in the minors while Hughes, Drake, Feliz, Torres keep giving up boatloads of runs in the majors? What purpose does that serve for the now or the future? None of those guys possess a quality MLB arsenal or impressive secondary metrics that would predict they would be better than what we currently have or are any kind of longterm asset.
  23. 3.3 is MLB average. Wily's problem is more his below average swinging strike % and o-swing% despite above average velocity.
  24. Braves select MacKenzie Gore at 1.5
