What to do with J.J. Hardy - he's putting together a great year
paul253 replied to GB12's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
With the emergence of Alcides Escobar in Huntsville, who is on schedule to be our starting shortstop in 2010, I was wondering what people on here hope happens with JJ Hardy. Personally, I'd love to see him resigned to a long term deal and moved to third base. I think he has the power for it, and would vastly improve the defense, along with Escobar at short. I dont think Gamel should be at third, I think he needs to be moved to first base to replace Fielder. Assuming Green is not selected as the PTBNL by Cleveland, he can be moved to his more natural second base and we can dump Weeks onto a team like KC or Baltimore, who could continue to hope he actually learns to hit. I've really started to like Hardy, and think he and Hart need to be signed long term. The only other option I wouldnt mind seeing is keeping Hardy at short and moving Escobar to second. -
How do we get the most from Rickie Weeks?
paul253 replied to futurebrewerfather's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Durham is worse defensively and about the same offensively and Counsell is a good bit behind Weeks offensively and better defensively. There is no way Durham's defense is worse. Weeks' defense cost us game one vs Chicago, which could have completely turned the series around. His throwing "miscue" (cant be called an error because it was on a double play ball) just cost Sabathia a run and got us down early in game 2 vs. Atlanta. His defense has taken a step backward, i think, from last year. Durham may not have as much range as he used to, but at least he can make the routine plays, and throws, something Weeks cannot do. Hitting wise, his approach is horrible. Every time he swings it looks like he's trying to hit the ball out of the stadium. I cant remember the last time i saw him try to take the ball to rightfield. That stupid Gary Sheffield like bat wag doesnt do him any good. He has a good on base percentage, and he can swipe some bases, but offensively that is literally all he has too offer. He has plenty of "potential", but he has done nothing to show me he's ever going to reach it. I hope Green and Lawrie both move to second so we can finally have some prospects to replace him in a few seasons. -
Brett Lawrie -- Latest: SIGNED! (reply #41)
paul253 replied to zzzmanwitz's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Id much rather see him at second. We have no prospects at that position whatsoever. Eric Farris is doing ok in low A ball as what, a 22 year old? Irrabarren is struggling in Nashville. Thats about all we got. -
Jake Odorizzi is my new favorite prospect, and although its only been 12.1 innings, he putting up really good number so far in Arizona...2.94 ERA whip under 1.00 12 k's only 3 walks, but 2 home runs allowed. My questions are....does he have the potential to be a #1 or #2, and is there any chance he sees Helena this summer? Its seems foolish to keep him in Arizona if he keeps up this success. Any chance he starts next year at West Virginia, or whoever our low A affiliate is?

If you put Hall in center and Gamel at third your defense is just horrible. Add Weeks at second, Fielder at first, and Braun, although he hasnt made any errors, his range is limited and he misplays some balls still. Though Hall wasnt bad in center, a year back at third would almost make it a learning process again. Its too bad Brantley wont be ready next season, I think hes exactly what we need in center. He can bat leadoff and move Weeks down to the 6th spot where he can relax a bit and hopefully, finally, start hitting.

So I just started this franchise on MLB the show 09, and have been tinkering with the concession products and such. When looking at the prices and the number of stuff sold, I see this number under the "overhead" category. Can someone tell me what exactly overhead is? Is it supposed to be high or low? How do you get it to change the direction you want it to? EDIT: clarified title - BtA

Sabathia would laugh at 6yrs/$120 m. 7 yrs/$150 million is the ball park. He wants a Santana type contract who got 6yrs/$143m while actually still being under contract for one year. I dont know if "laugh at" would be a good term. Give him the seventh year and the extra $1.4 million. That not that big of a deal. If not, I'm sure Sheets will cost less than Sabathia.
-
On another note...Counsell is due to come off the books too i just noticed....hes also making a little chunk of change..like $3 mil? With all that salary (Sheets, Mota, Cameron, Counsell, Gagne, Turnbow), if they cant resign Sheets and/or Sabathia I will be disappointed. You think 6 years $120 million will get Sabathia? In a year Kendall's 5 million comes off, then in 2 years Suppan's 12 million. Fielder will probably be gone and others will be replaced with guys like Escobar, Brantley, Salome, Gamel, and Gillespie and making low salaries. Hopefully some of our pitching will develop and the Fielder trade will bring in some good young pitchers. I dont think a 6 year deal for Sabathia or Sheets will hold us down too much.

Good year? He hit .225, although he had a decent on based percentage. 16 homeruns and 36 RBI with 25 SBs.....i wouldnt classify that as "good"...i'd classify it as average. His career BA is .243 his career OBP is .350 and slugging of .402. Hes not a leadoff hitter by any means, but if he wasnt hitting leadoff, all of his stats minus SB's would be well below average. He strikes out way too much, and he strikes out on 3 pitches more than anyone ive ever seen. I cant remember the last time I saw him try to hit the ball to the opposite field. His approach is horrible, he tries to pull everything and he never lets up on his swing, even when a grounder to second will score a run. His defense is pathetic and probably cost us game one of the Cubs series. Yet somehow he's still getting a pass. I'd rather see Durham play every day. Meanwhile its already been determined thru his 235 career at bats that Gwynn ismt worth a roster spot. Im not saying Gwynn is going to be an allstar by any means. Just saying he deserves a roster spot, possibly in centerfield, because theres no reason to sign an outfielder when we have 3 or 4 prospects who will be ready within 2 years. And one career error in over 400 innings.

Looks like Bay to the BoSox, Manny to the Dodgers, and 4 prospects, including Craig Hanson and Andy LaRoche to Pittsburgh

Jason Bay to Rays, but maybe not

Sorry just to avoid any confusion, are you talking about Gwynn or Weeks?
-
I hear you on Weeks - but his potential is 10 times greater than Gwynn. All things equal, you might as well keep potential. How many chances does this man get? How many times does he have to fail before you start to realize the "potential" is not going to happen. In 2 years, possibly sooner, you'll have at least two players ready for the majors in Gillespie and Brantley. Why not give Gwynn a shot? He's had less than what, 400 career ML at bats, a lot of the coming as a pinch hitter, yet so many people here refuse to even give him a chance. Yet Weeks is going on, what, season 3 of awful, and we are still talking about his potential. I'd rather pay Gwynn major league minimum and use that money to sign someone else, like a pitcher, than to pay Cameron $7.5 million (is that what his option is) to watch him have another miserable year at the plate. If you want to pay that much money for a few extra homeruns, thats your right. I think hes a waste of money.

I don't believe this to be close to accurate. Perhaps I should put it another way.....Defensively, I'd put him ahead of any outfielder on the roster other than Cameron. He's cheap, and another left handed bat in a righthanded dominant lineup. Brad Nelson. Great.....what about him? Do you want Brad Nelson to play center, or are you just listing another cheap lefthanded hitter? Gwynn has a .679 OPS in AAA this year and you think he has nothing left to prove there? Gwynn is not, and never has been a power hitter, so obviously his slugging percentage is going to be lower. Im more concerned about on base percentage for a leadoff hitter than slugging percentage. Weeks has a cool .329 on base percentage this year with a strikeout once every 4.3 at bats. Not exactly what Im looking for with someone who is supposed to set the table. Gwynn may be having a bit of a down year in Nasvhville, but its his third season there, what exactly do you want him to do? Im not saying hes the ideal leadoff hitter, but I'd rather see him then Weeks. Some people just have this complete hatred for him that I dont understand. Is it because he wont hit homeruns? Like I said, I see no reason why you need to go off and spend money on an outfielder when you are going to have Gillespie, Brantley, and, if he moves to outfield, Gamel, in AAA next season.

sure hope its not Gwynn. The only question TG is the answer to is "Who could we put in center that would make our team worse?" I hope it is. He has nothing left to prove in AAA. His defense is at worst a shade less than Cameron. He can bat leadoff and finally get Weeks out of that spot in the batting order. He's cheap, and another left handed bat in a righthanded dominant lineup. With all the holes we are going to have in the rotation and bullpen, and all the prospects in the outfield, the last thing I want to see them spend money on is an outfielder. They need to sign at least 2 bullpen arms, a backup utility guy to replace Counsell, and at least one starter, maybe 2.

Speaking of which, shouldn't Cameron and Gagne be on that list?
